As an avid disc golfer & a Machinist, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this feat of designing, engineering & execution of this machine. Pretty dope guys. Way to go!
This is exactly what the industry needs to standardize disc flight numbers. Every approved disc should have to be thrown by a machine like this (of course at normal disc golf speeds) and get actual, correct flight numbers for every disc. I would try to get with companies or just throw every disc many many times with that thing and make your own unofficial (official) numbers. Idk, this thing has to have a productive use right?
I started on a journey to see about a machine like this a couple of years ago for that very reason... one of the problems is the lack of Quality Control and plastics that make the flight numbers vary widely among the same disc. I love the idea of standardizing, but there are so many variables that come into play that it will take someone way smarter than me to figure out. These guys look way smarter, so hopefully they can do it! :D
@ogdiscgolfer correct. A DX wraith wouldn't have the same numbers as a champ wraith. Intelligence has some to do with it but at some point it just becomes patients, number crunching, and elbow grease.
@@ericjepson3765 I agree... I was speaking a little tongue in cheek about intelligence. Because of the fickleness of plastics, even in the same run you can have a wide variety of flight characteristics so you would need to do a very large sample size of each run to get an average flight number, but even that wouldn't allow us to nail down specific flight numbers so that you and I could just grab any disc with a certain set of flight numbers and be sure that it would fly the same. We could get closer/better than the system we have now, but there is always going to be a lot of variance due to the process. That said, they created the perfect machine to get us as close as possible. :D
so like, i like the idea but: I have some discs with -2 turn that start to turn less than 100ft from my hand, and some discs with -2 turn that turn 200+ft down the fairway. but each of those turn 2x what a -1 turn disc of the same speed would do with the same release. so, basically, both discs have an accurate flight number, but the flight paths are never going to be the same. this is primarily because the rating system only goes from -5 to +1. there is no possible way anyone could ever describe the flight of every disc with only 7 turn ratings, even taking speed and glide into account.
MVP would like a word with you! If we can standardize flights, with a repeatable robot, we can standardize flight numbers, which would significantly improve our sport!

It is so crazy that it took building an insanely high powered machine like this just to beat David's record by ~200ft. Yeah that is a pretty good margin, but for that amount of power I would have expected to easy double the distance a human could achieve. Just shows how absolutely insane David's throw was for a human to break 1000ft. This is so awesome, and theres so many more possibilities with this machine. You could do so much for the community. From a testing stand point. Different arm speeds and flights numbers. To seeing what the farthest possible distance is for a human. So cool!
You should focus on making a machine that can produce very repeatable results between the 20-70 mph range. Something like this is needed to test/standardize flight numbers, it could also serve as a quality assurance process.
Now that you got the record done could we jump to the important stuff. Consistency and accuracy. indoors maybe..? who makes the glidiest mids..? i need answers in the form of fpv follow shots.
Fantastic video! Excellence demonstrated all the way through from the story, cinematography, to Maple Hill number 7... all of it. Instant sub and will definitely be cheering you guys on!
Centripetal would be the bending inwards. What you did bending that was centrifugal. The block weight was being forced outward causing the arm to bend. I never heard centripetal until now so I guess I learned something new today lol
I was looking for someone else who caught that before I made my own comment. Centrifugal force is also what drains the waters from your clothes... centripetal force would be the force keeping it pressed to the inside of the drumwall.
The beautiful art of engineering at work here, complete with trials and tribulations, as well as successes and utter failures. The process is absolute beauty. The result is a machine that is an absolute work of art. Awesome job guys!
Doesn't the radius of the throwing arm affect the spin rate? If i build a machine that moves straight at 200mph, the disc has no spin. In discgolf usually the goal is to move your arm across in a straight line aswell (i know the wrist still rolls). Does it really simulate a throw with such a small radius?
Exactly, the straight line is a misconception. The effective radius of a human throw, i.e. the hip, torso, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and finger rotation all averaged out is equivalent to the effective radius of our machine. So the human and machine are doing the same thing, rotating around a radius, the human just has way more radii linked together with joints. Our rpm to speed slope ends up roughly equivalent to a pro disc golfer, and this is also adjustable.
I really like the simple design. You choose the length of the arm based on the desired angular velocity, that's brilliant. I'd have simplified the design even further by releasing both the disc and the counter weight, though.
I have been playing Disc Golf since 1977, and I would have never thought back then that I would ever see a machine like this, although we often talked about it while playing on the courses.
This machine should be tested in regular pro speed with each disc to improve the sport and disc manufacturing. By determining the exact launch angle and speed you could test the actual numbers of a disc and the actual physics of the sport. Of course you have to have the perfect conditions such as almost no wind what so ever . Or you could just find an equation to bypass the effects of the wind and tell you the number needed... BTW: You could actually be able to create a disc golf simulator or launch monitor using your machine's data just like golf. It could even be just a phone app because no such speeds are necessary like real golf. A good phone camera would be sufficient even for a pro ;) . But anyways this is the only successfully working prototype that I could see on the internet for disc golf so far . Kudos to you guys !!!

So glad youtube recommended this, I've always enjoyed channels like Stuff Made Here, mark rober, and smarter everyday, where they dive into the physics and engineering. But to see this for disc golf is something I didn't know I needed in my life. 😊❤
Everyone be making disc golf throwing machines out here
This is so awesome, and theres so many more possibilities with this machine.
Keep this up and you’ll have a million subs in no time
I need to get in touch with your real estate guy in the metaverse, the new shop looks amazing
We actually represent ourselves. Turns out getting an RE license in the metaverse is a breeze...
This was the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. I’m glad someone finally made something like this that is actually good.
Well, you'll be competing with Stuff Made Here, probably in accuracy, not the speed.
This is amazing thank you for the countless hours spent to answer the question all disc golfers ask. Can’t someone make a machine that throws discs?
I hope this video gets a lot of views. That 10hp motor isnt cheap.
That's one heck of a Simon Line.
Bravo guys. That's insane
Log-Tech: the future of holding stuff
BRO, I love it. Lets collaborate and make it throw one of my boomerangs.
Stuff Made Here just posted his version. Time to do a battle.
This channel is so underrated, keep up the work guys and youll be big one day
Now that you got the record done could we jump to the important stuff. Consistency and accuracy. indoors maybe..? who makes the glidiest mids..? i need answers in the form of fpv follow shots.
Nice job guys. Love the ridiculous over kill build videos. So cool
10:30 Shoutouts to the sponsors
Extremely well done for only their second video. I can see this channel getting a million subs
Isn't it centrifugal force at play here and not centripetal force?
@@stevencatone exactly lol. I’m surprised nobody else said anything lol
I'm here for the same reason I was starting to question myself haha
Easiest subscribe in a long time. Fantastic content. Keep it up. Awesome project and engineering.
Glad you enjoyed it!
stuff made here just released a new disc golf vid right now, crazy timing
The beautiful art of engineering at work here, complete with trials and tribulations, as well as successes and utter failures. The process is absolute beauty.
The result is a machine that is an absolute work of art. Awesome job guys!
Okay so this is faster than the one from Stuff Made Here, sorry for my wrong previous comment!
All good, thanks for watching!
disc launch battle with @stuffmadehere
beat me to it
He beat me to it also.
Need another video of trying to break the record again. Yo definitely could on the right day conditions
This Just In: Garage engineers eliminate power grid with frisbee. News at 11.
2:40 Perfect way to pay homage lol
Just 2 days later, Stuff Made Here also made a frisbee launcher 😅
I was only a few minutes in and knew this channel is 100% on my permanent radar. The machine work is just pure insanity
Welcome aboard!
@@We.Make.Machines Thanks for explaining. Good job guys!
Troy is literally watching Stuff Made Here's channel at 2:39
Campgaw!
I thought I recognized that storage container 😂
I really like the simple design. You choose the length of the arm based on the desired angular velocity, that's brilliant. I'd have simplified the design even further by releasing both the disc and the counter weight, though.
Wld be awesome to see real flight numbers!
Also wld love to see how plastic type and weather effects flight!
As a former ultimate player and current disc golfer, this is amazing! Well done! Subbed.
I really want to se a version where you and Stuff made here build the ultimate disc launcher
I have been playing Disc Golf since 1977, and I would have never thought back then that I would ever see a machine like this, although we often talked about it while playing on the courses.
Absolutely insane content for such a small channel. Subscribed for life!
That is terrifying...in the most amazing way
wow. now that's some good disc golf form
Please keep it up ive been dying for content exactly like this.
That motor world make a great desk fan
What an absolute launch!!
Looks like you guys are just getting started. This content is amazing!
