Ok so Canon now has the bodies. Now all they have to do is support them with proper APSC glass like a 16-55 f2.8 or a 10-24mm f2.8 maybe a 16mm f1.8 and a 35mm f1.8. Instead of making us buy expensive RF lenses.

I expected $1800 for the R7, so that price is a pleasant surprise. That must mean whatever happens with the next EOS R level camera, it will not be changing price much, if at all.

    • @JoshuaMcTackett
      @JoshuaMcTackett 2 роки тому +6

I daresay the Eos R will be a standalone camera. Everyone who bought the R is either better served by an R5 or R6 and can afford it because they work, or would move to an RP 2 type of camera or even buy these crop cameras.
I think another R would cannibalize the other camera segments.
I had an Eos R as a backup. I replaced it with an R6 so I could run twin bodies.
The difference in price is small enough to justify. 5 years or so from now I'll likely upgrade but it would be to an R6 2 type body or R52 type body

Ordered mine this a.m. I've been anxiously awaiting this camera for my wildlife photography (although I really want an R1). Shooting with my long lenses at a 1.6X crop factor sure beats using extenders and losing f-stops. The 30 fps is very attractive vs the 20 fps of my R5. I just wish the buffer was a bit bigger. I guess for birds-in-flight, I'll continue to use my R5. I expect that I will now sell my R6. The quality of the photos will determine that. Although I really prefer the R6 over the R5 for astrophotography. We'll see what the low-light images look like on the R7 once I get it. Thanks for the "preview". As an M50 user that's thinking about upgrading to the R line, this is awesome news. I was thinking of stepping up to a full frame like the RP or even just the R but man these 2 cameras are grabbing my attention more than ever. I was leaning towards the RP more (because I'm a cheap ass) but the fps of 5 mech and 4 elec was insanely low, the M50 is at 10fps for crying out loud, not that I need that much but it helps when I do!
Probably score one of these cameras especially because of the unification of the lens mounts!

Jared, I have a feeling they are coming out with these two models first to see what the market is like for Aps-c cameras these days. From what I have found out the 7dmkii camera was more expensive when it first came out than the new R7. If the market shows strong sales for these two cameras, I think they will develope a higher end version with stronger pro-like features in the future. I used to be an instore rep for Canon and I always have used the Aps-d cameras even for shooting weddings and I started a mobile portrait studion, where I could shoot print and frame using Canon printers and lights and backdrops! I taught
myself this idea while demonstrating Canon cameras and printers in the store setups to demonstrate how well the cameras shoot and the printers print quality photos.
Now I have done everything from wedding shoots to sports, air show. and car shows also. It would be nice to see a comparison shoot with the new R7 vs. the R, or the R6 when doing portraits and weddings as well as animal and bird, or landscapes to compare full frame cameras and the Aps-c cameras. That way customers can really see the difference in using both cameras in pro and personal use. I have gotten comfortable using Aps-c cameras for portraits, pro events like weddings and corporate events as well as landscape and sports photography etc. I have yet to see anyone do a real comparison of shots in the same shooting of events. Since you are one of my favorite "Geek" photographers I would definitely
like to see you do a comparison shooting event with both style of cameras!

When the 7D mkii was released it was a tough , genuine pro-grade aps-c camera with the same build quality and a very similar form factor to the 5D mkiii , the canom general purpose pro body of the day . It was so tough that you could just about hammer nails with it and it made a reasonable melee weapon if the event you were shooting turned pear shaped . Unlike the 5D , it had dual processors giving superior speed to the 5d and a flagship level autofocus system .
      Basically I was hoping for an aps-c R5 .

    • @simonmaduxx6777

@@mcmoose64 the body for the 7D and the 7d2 was amazing. Unfortunately my 7D lost focus and Canon wasn't able to fix it so I had to dump it. I tested the 7D2 as soon as it came out and the color from that sensor was disgusting and flat. The body felt amazing, however one session was all it took with some landscapes to end that rental. Yes it was supposed to replace a beloved camera but it was old Tech when it came out and quickly faded away.
From my experience with the old rebels to the latest Ms - and this is backed up by some data on other sites, the colors have definitely suffered in their latest iterations of sensors. At least for crop. We all got mad at Canon repurposing the 18 megapixel sensors, but once they got past that, thing started getting funny style with the sensors.
I'm taking pictures with the m62 that have such a low color range it makes me wonder is it the sensor, is it camera raw I don't know what it is. But I never had these issues before.. I can pop open images from the old 7D that are absolutely bursting with color. Same thing for the original M mirrorless. I absolutely cannot say the same for the M50 or the m62 that I own as supposed upgrades. The M50 sensor is so noisy that I would never use it for portraits. And the m6 2 suffers from shutter slap even more so because of the high density sensor and no IS. Even with big lenses attached.. the problem is the body mechanism.
So now we have these crop bodies much larger than a mirrorless m. Some FF lenses will make sense like a 35 or 70-200, others are not that usable like a 50 because it's just too long on crop. There's no 1.4 lenses that you can use for them either unless you're going to stick on a monstrous FF/RF lens.
I feel like it's just in a very weird spot unless you're sitting on EF glass you've been dying to use. And not having stabilization man it is the worst for small cameras especially if they're lightweight. I've been suffering this dilemma for the last 3 years. It sucks.

Canon has a number of ready-made RF-S lens designs in the EF-M and EF-S line-up. The EF-M would be particularly easy to adapt.
In fact, I was surprised they didn't and wish they had made an RF-S 15-45mm like exists for the M-system. Why they launched with two lenses both 18mm at the wide end baffles me. At least there is an inexpensive RF 16mm if someone needs wider... Or the can adapt an EF-S 10-22mm or EF-S 10-18mm. Both of those are very good ultrawides.

Being a NIkon shooter myself, $1499 is not bad at all for an IBIS-enabled APS-C camera. I mean it's in the ballpark of the Sony a6600, and also Sony and Nikon's entry level FF mirrorless (which have IBIS, the Z5 and a7c). If they got rid of the EVF, that would put them a step behind (instead of a step ahead) of Nikon. It will be interesting to see Nikon's response to the R7 though (they already have a competitor for the R10, which is basically the Zfc and Z50) but this may be the kick in the pants Nikon needs to come out with a replacement for the Nikon D500 DSLR (maybe a Z500 or a "Z90").

Two days ago when I heard that R7 and R10 are coming out I got super excited as I didn't expect Canon to release cameras in this range so soon. I thought it'd take a year or two. Currently, I'm using a DSLR EOS 250D and I am not a professional photographer so I was waiting for something in a budget range to come out so I can switch to Mirror-less and RF system, so at that time R10 looked like a pretty good option. However, I was expecting R10 to have a price range of around $600-$700 so that's a bit higher than expectations and it's coming out pretty late - in July, so I will wait and see. As another option for me then is to go for a used Sony mirror-less camera with less price range something like a6400.

The R7 has the dual card slots so it's a viable option for second shooters at weddings. In a pinch it could be a primary camera but it's not ideal because you lose the stop of light but for a second shooter that's in better lighting it's completely usable, and higher ISOs aren't really going to be a problem with the newer processor. The R10 is pretty impressive too, especially at that price! Sports shooters could use either one and do just fine. These are a couple of winners. The thing also weighed a ton with RF glass. I found I never used it because it was simply too cumbersome to take anywhere unless I was shooting from the car. I do most of my shooting hiking and camping. So I reverted back to APS-C. (Got the EOS M6ii). Honestly, I think i get better night scape shots with the M6ii. The RP never did it for me at night but during the day - it is good.
I suppose if I shot portraits I would have a full frame, but for wildlife and landscape it didn't make sense for me. I don't care about how the camera "feels" in my hands. I just care about portability and image quality. And the slightest image improvement in daylight with full frame just wasn't enough for me to give up portability. Everyone is different though.

The original M has been with me through multiple countries, paid jobs, you name it. The Colors are WONDERFUL..the af is slow but accurate. The performance of the m50 and m62 has been so bad I have used them both on a total of 2 shoots in three years! No IS really really hurts, especially as they both suffer from shutter slap with their high density crop sensors.

Just like these cameras, the AF system shares operation with the a9, but Sony didn't even say it was the "same" system. Both use a 24mp BSI sensor, and both used the same technology for AF, but as with the R3 vs the R5, because they have similar programming, they don't have the same performance. Sony didn't even mention the a9 in their press release.
And, since I was at the press launch for the a7 III as a journalist, I heard Sony say that the a7 III shared the AF system with the a9, but wasn't as powerful as the a9 due to differences in processor and pipeline.

If you're going from ASP-C to full frame, then you need to get full frame lenses, otherwise, the R6 will automatically go to crop mode and you'll get about an 8 mp image. If you can only afford an R6 and wouldn't be able to get any lenses with it, stick with APS-C body. Getting good lenses will always be a better investment over a body because you can use a lens for a long time and put it on different cameras as you upgrade, and the lens will long outlast the body as long as you take care of it. I would say go for the R7 and also get one of the EF-RF adapters so you can use almost any canon lens, full frame or APS-C(not M mount though), going back to the 80s. Just remember the 1.6 crop when looking at full frame lenses.

I do agree with the get good glass before getting a higher end body. The one issue I do see is that using an APS-C body for indoor work is that you loose the wide angle, because of the crop, the 16-35 would be a 25-56 equivalent. You should find some experienced wedding/event photographers you can talk to and see what gear they would recommend you could start with. I primarily shoot surfing and have been waiting a long time for this release as an upgrade for my 7DmII. 15 frames per second will be ideal for shooting sequences of surfers and the articulating display and EVF is a huge upgrade for shooting video versus the display on the 7D which is virtually impossible to use outdoors on a sunny day. I also expect that the used market will soon be flooded with 7D, 7DmII and 90D bodies.

Finally the only difference between the high end and entry level are full frame and shutter speed. (Why its still gated to 1/4000 idk)
Everything else is unified. You can get the same images from an R3 and an R10 without having to invest a house into photography just to get decent results. That changes everything. FINALLY cameras are smart and the only difference is resolution.

Going forward, all Canon interchangeable lens cameras will eventually be the R-series mirrorless. This is just one of the steps toward that goal.
Canon is phasing out their APS-C M-series, which uses it's own unique EF-M mount lenses that can't be adapted for use on the R-series. The M-series cameras are sort of like PowerShot G-series point n shoots, but with interchangeable lenses (except they have never made a lot if lenses for them).
Canon is also phasing out their EF-mount DSLRs (both APS-C and full frame), though the EF and EF-S lenses they use adapt very well for use on the R-series.
You have it backwards...if you have a full frame camera, it basically only makes sense to use full frame lenses. But if you have a crop sensor camera you can use both full frame lenses and crop design lenses. There aren't many of the latter for the R-series yet, but in time there will be more. Besides, did you notice Jared shooting with that full frame RF 100-400mm lens, that's not a whole lot bigger that the crop only EF-S 55-250mm, but is a whole lot more powerful!

If you think about it, they didn't really have a choice. The level of AF that's expected now outstrips the old processors they used to pass off in the old bodies.
Canon treats the non-professional lines as a kind of beating stick, whipping out useful features here and there for the sake of market segmentation. Us Cannon diehards know this practice well, and it most often results in peculiar missing features for No object reason. For instance, the lack of is or the sensor cover mechanism in the r10. These bodies are more similar or not, and high density old style CMOS sensors are still going to have issues with pixel smearing resulting in files that are just not as sharp. At this point I'm looking at my old 18 megapixel canons like they are now gold because I know that the colors and the sharpness done I expect is going to be there. From now on whenever Canon drops a really good model that does what I need to do, I'm buying too. Because waiting to see what Canon does in the future is purely an exercise and frustration.
I'm looking at the r7 and that's not even a camera that I want. Only because I need those features. But it's a crop camera. The R6 only has 20megapixel..aggrggrg. Really grinds my gears

And that old L series EF glass is pretty damn top notch. Stop spouting nonsense and lies.

@@davepastern That’s not how it works, you don’t include adapted glass, Sony E can also use EF glass with adapter but you probably would not count that with it. When you look at system you only look at glass actually made for the system especially as hardly anyone would actually consider adapted glass when buying into a new system, so adapted glass is pretty irrelevant, and then Z mount would actually win because it can use it all.
So yes E mount has most glass, but the biggest advantage is not as much in variety as it’s in third part support. I really hope Canon and Nikon allow licensing as Sony do because it means you get cheap glass as well as lenses like the 35-150/2-2.8 Tamron something your otherwise is unlikely to have in your line up.
