The RP has a full frame sensor, so if you value or need a full frame sensor, and fps aren't important to you, then yes, it's the better camera. But most people I know who have bought the R7, including myself, have done so specifically because it is a 32 megapixel APS-C camera. A ton of pixels on subject gets you closer. Crop ability is what it's all about. Reach. I have full frame cameras and love them for landscapes and everyday photography, but when I'm shooting a shy songbird, or a wolf at 120 yards, I need reach. I also need fps.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - The RP is weather sealed! I got that wrong in the video, I was told in the comments of a previous video that it was not, and just assumed that was correct given the price point. I think that makes it Canons cheapest full frame camera AND Canons cheapest weather sealed body.

Great video! Yes, some compelling reasons to buy an RP for portrait shooting and general photography with occasional video, if a person does not need it for fast action or high video specs. When we sold our house the professional realty photographer used an RP with ultra-wide lens and I managed to download the images to check them out. Some great stuff. The RP is great for portrait or static images like realty.

I have an RP, never tried the R7. Yes it's true, the RP is absolutely terrible for capturing fast moving subjects. Even just shooting a model who was sort of slowly dancing around in a dress, it just kept whiffing the autofocus. So between the poor autofocus and the 4 frames per second, forget using it on anything faster than a slow walk. But I really like it for fashion and portrait shooting. The images are nice, and of course the colors are good. I prefer the color out of the RP more than my much more expensive Sony's.

Thanks for the candid and detailed presentation/review. I am not a professional and I don’t shoot video, and here are my 2 cents adding to your comments:
I picked up the RP when it first came out in early 2019 and the R7 a month ago. For all intents and purposes they are the same new price when you take into considerations of the added features such as: IBIS, higher resolution, much improved auto focus, improved menu/operating system, dual cards (if you need it), bigger and commonly used battery, etc.
I absolutely agree that RP is the perfect fit for budget minded, general photography, etc. However, the R7 should be considered more suitable for photographers who do wild life photography occasionally. It’s auto focus, higher pixel, and further reach allow you to practise wild life photography without breaking your bank getting the R5 or R6. It’s particularly true if you already owned some of the older lenses such as the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L.
By the way, I love the compact size and light weight of the RP: 17.9oz vs 22.4oz (with battery & SD card, weighted myself). The best camera is the one you can afford without going into financing!

  • @shadyninja1
    @shadyninja1 2 роки тому +4

    The answer is simple.
Get the RP if you do landscape and events and low light performance.
Get the R7 if you want speed and do sports and bird photography

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx 2 роки тому

      You missed something incremental:
"Get the R7 if you want speed and do sports and bird photography" + and if you can afford it
The R7 is just too expensive especially because its just APS-C! And the budget version, the R10 is too crippled by canon.

So my guess is that you are slowly moving away from Canon M system? If that's the case just wanted to say thank you for your thorough coverage of EF-M lenses and systems. It was very informative and enthusiastic and as a M50 MII user I have learned a lot from your videos. But I do understand the move, as Canon R is probably a better system to start building your setup now.

The RP is not "officially" Weather sealed, but still Canon reports it's not particularly vulnerable due to tight assembly fitting and some degree of thought in the dials positioning and design. It HAS some degree of weather sealing.
I wouldn't go to Borneo with ant RP ou won't have any problem in a light rain, especially if your lens is weather sealed.
I really wish Canon had used the 6D sensor rather then the 6Dmkll: noise and render wise the 6Mp you get are not worth compared to quality of high ISO and image rendering.
The 6D is still is among the best sensors canon ever made

Hi Mark interesting comparison and always a little tricky comparing FF with APSC. For a slightly different perspective I paid about US $1500 in 2005 ( $2100 in 2022 values) for the Canon 20D (still working) and US $ 1700 for the R7 last week so it’s worth just stepping back and admiring how far Canons APSC cameras have come and that they are cheaper than ever. The 20D is an 8megapixel camera with AF and a postage sized LCD thats pretty much it, not that I didn’t get some great images on it but the R7 is well, quite spectacularly better 😀 From a personal perspective, for my use case, I would be picking the R7 over the RP regardless of the price difference. Cheers from NZ 😀👍

I wait for new Canon M50 mark iii which as rumours said will come last quarter if 2022. I just need 4k and reliable AF. My Canon M50 shows even with kit lens, very nice 4k video quality. Have the RP with 24-240. Love it. I mainly do travel grab shots. It's limitations are not a problem for what I do. Eg I don't do video at all. And that's the point. Horses for courses. This video provides excellent contrasts of features PLUS what it means in terms of subject matter.
Now also have R50 with 100-400. Haven't done much with it. It has some better features than the RP. Eg Better focus system and more fps. And the lenses are fully interchangeable!
So I've sort of filled some of the RP gaps with the R50 rather than going for an expensive APS-C.

  • @ladyethyme

    Um.
    RP is full frame.
    R7 is crop.
How is this not the first thing you mention? You actually intimate that the RP is a crop "if you're used to a crop with a bigger grip".......that was a bit confusing at the beginning.
R7 has serious jumping AF issue. Canon has even addressed this. In continuous shooting, 99% will be jumping focus. You CAN'T use the full fps, despite what it says.

IMHO, the RP does not hold a candle next to the R7. Much lower continuous shutter speed, no IBIS, shorter reach) make it unsuitable for use as an action or sport camera. There is no excuse for the RP to use a smaller battery than the EOS R or R7, basically its battery is used across the EOS M line.

    • @HawkyLee
      @HawkyLee 2 роки тому +2

@@myfavoritecrew7920 well I've managed to test the RP (lucky me the 2nd photographer at a paid gig i was in was using it with a adapted sigma 70-200 and canon 24-70 f4) a few days after commenting to Mark.
So during the gig We swap gears halfway along the shoot and we both agree and noticed the m6mkii is way better at overall focusing peformance. The RP focusing is nothing bad, its as accurate as it gets with mirrorless no front and back focusing issues unlike dslr. But laggs behind the m6mkii. We use the slow burst 3fps mode on both bodies 56mm(90mm) on the m6mkii and 90mm on his 70-200 sigma both at f2.8, same subject dancing back and fourth left and right about 25-26 continues shots about 5 times.
Reviewing back the pics,(over 120 shots) the m6mkii have 95%-90% accurate focus vs 65%-70% on the RP. The RP is good, but not on par with the m6mkii.
For iso, RP at 6400 even 12800 is cleaner. Safe to say you can get away with most of the shoots even as high as 12800. With the m6mkii, 12800 is unusable for me, some shots maybe but mostly no. And the bokeh is way apparent vs the apcs m6mkii. Gotta hand it to the fullframe sensor 😂
Dynamic range is just a tad better with the RP, its better but not enough wow factor to justify the peformance vs m6mkii.
All i can say is due to the fullframe-ness of RP, the pic it self will turn out better. But for focus speed and performance, the m6mkii owns the RP. I dont mind the slow 3fps speed as long as it can nail every shots but my test proven otherwise. So for me, RP is not a good enough upgrade. Still praying to meet up with a R user so i can test out the focusing peformance though 😬

Regarding the dial thing, I've seen a lot of people talking about the R7's changes, with only two wheels (top and thumb wheel). As a long-time 7DII user, this is exactly what I've been shooting with for years. No third control like more expensive cameras. The thumb wheel did move from the 7DII, but it seems to be in a better ergonomic position so you only have to move your thumb to the side, not over and down.
My principal control when I'm shooting fast in changing light conditions (I shoot concerts) is the shutter speed. I have that mapped to the thumb wheel on the 7DII, and the top dial controlling the aperture. ISO is done through the top dial with a single button-press to change it.
I can't imagine much will change with my operations with the R7..........if I ever get the one I ordered.

I have decided to bite a bullet and actually ordered an RF camera as well. Will keep my M50 for a bit longer as I love the small compact size of it but I was wondering. Now that you have RP and R7 would you be willing to do some tests with older but cheaper EF lenses from L-line? Lenses like 24-105 f/4 are still a great deal and I wonder if they perform better than a kit lens 24-105 f/4-7.1

@@markwiemels I owned the RP for 3 years. I wanted to have better lenses but ff is just to much for my wife to stomach, lol. So I got an M6 mkii and some 1.4 primes on the way. I'm hoping for comparable image quality and better 4k video than the RP could offer. I'd use EF-S glass with the rp 4k since i could at least resolve the full image on that portion of the sensor with the comparable crop not being additive and it worked ok but the lack of auto focus was terrible. I miss the better iso performance of the RP tho. ISO 10,000 was kinda my limit. Images would turn to mush around there. Maybe the RF 35mm was the only lens I owned that could bump up that high and still be usable. The ef100mm f2.8 macro was too dark and the EF 50mm 1.8 was good on the camera but not great. I don't care about bokeh tbh and I can buy a whole kit for the M6 mkii for the price of one RF lens. I'm trying to not buy too many EF-M lenses though since they won't carry over. : ( anyways thanks for your insights on the EF-M system.

@PF Music good choice with the M6. I Bought an M50 mk iiand have even used it to shoot an engagement part with 150+ guests. They're very capable with a good quality lens (the 1.4 primes are superb).
I wouldn't worry too much about the EF-M being discontinued. I've got 7 EF-M lenses and 3 EF lenses. I love the EF-M lenses, the whole package looks so sexy being so small and pretty much all the EF-M glass is very sharp (even the kit lens is great if you get a good copy).
Also 10 fps is brilliant - I got mine mainly to shoot my kids sports and it's been superb.
I like the specs on some of the new R series cameras but the priced are eye watering and don't really see an RP as a proper upgrade

  • @oscdelagarza

To be honest the RP is not a good choice. R7 is way better but if you are on a budget then get a m50. You can get a viltrox speed booster and ef-m to ef-s/ef adapter, then you will have 3 lens choices to choose from(ef, ef-s and ef-m). The speed booster gets you close to a full frame image with a f-stop faster(the 50mm f1.8 becomes a true 50mm at f1.2). M50 has the same digic 8 processor and shoots at 10fps versus 4fps from RP with tracking. The video specs on m50 is the same as RP. 1080p 24, 30, and 60fps. 4k is cropped with no dual pixel autofocus. Get a zhiyun crane m3 and sigma 16mm f1.4 and you will have an awesome video rig. Sorry but RP is not a good choice.

I feel much hate on the RP in your comment.
I love the RP... it has its weak points which are also annoying sometimes, especially in wildlife or astrophotography usage, but i still love it.
As good the R7 is... its MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE....like this i would go for the R6 before i even think about the R7 or R5 if i could and wanted to afford.
And when we come to the R10... the "budget R7", i tried it and WOW.... yeah its fast, in overall i enjoyed it a lot more than my RP in wildlife... but the weaknesses are:
      - SUPER SMALL Buffer
      - slow SD card write speed (hindering at bursts even more)
      - ISO handling... its just incredible how fast modern and expensive APS-C sensors are still getting noisy at ISO 3200+.... meanwhile the RP easily handles 6400, just 12800 and above gets "too" noisy already.
      - APS-C.... i was using APS-C for nearly 15 years. The RP was my first "expensive" and first full frame camera ever. Never ever would i go back to APS-C unless full frame dies out.... just the 50 and 85 or 100mm primes are SO NICE usable, meanwhile on APS-C you have to stick to more expensive bigger aperture 35 or 50mm lenses.
The switch from APS-C to full frame made most of my lenses much more usable (except for a luckily cheap and old telezoom i used for wildlife and sold with the upgrade to FF)
There is one reason i would love a R7 or even R10....wildlife. thats just one single reason, and considering its price and its just a hobby... nope, too expensive sry.
I tried also the R10 and well... its "ok", but its small buffer and slow write speed to card make it barely usable in maximum burst speed when shooting flying birds.
Also, im using the RF 800 F11... the RP is already "not good enough" for not as good light conditions, but the R10... wow, but its just APS-C so expected.

I loved the RP and here and then i wished i still have it with small, fast primes, but in general with some "special" glass like the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM the R7 is so much more capable than the RP (speed, video, slowmo, resolution, features...) and i have also a wildlife camera.

Im looking at moving up from a Canon SL1. The Sl3 was my next choice but with the market moving to mirrorless it seem like I might be better moving to the R series. I use my SL1 casually and a majority of my photographs are taken on my phone. The Sl1 is for vacations and specific outing for taking photographs. So I think the R7 is over kill but the RP is a consideration. Video is important since I make the occasional UA-cam video. I was looing at the M50 and M200. the rolling shutter issue on the R7 sounds serious and I am not sure if Clog is an important item on my list. The two available R7 Lense don't inspire me. For me the reason to go for the RP was mainly the price and that i dont use(d... fk it^^) video.
Well... things changed, i realized wildlife is more interesting after i got the RP (and RF 800 F11) and its very limiting if you want/need more than 1080p60 or 4k 25 fps or 4-5fps in burst.
None the less, i dont regret my decision for the RP - The R7 is MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE and the R10 is too limited, especially in buffer and SD card write speed. The Price of the R10 is another thing considering its by far one of the worst APS-C sensors for modern DSLMs.
The RP is ok for video (even better for vlogging than R5, R6, R7 etc), but NOT for anything beyond 60 fps. But i have to say... 1080p60 is very good and 4k in manual focus also nice, any other setting is very low bitrate and noticable worse.

Using FV mode I can control every main setting on the R7 with just the front dial and rear wheel while looking through the viewfinder.

If you're into moments, go for R7, RP is good for portraits and script poses.
