Is non-oversampled 4k 60p a hardware limitation on the R7 or could be added later software update? For a wildlife/sports camera good slow-mo video is needed, ideally at 4k 120p
R7 is cheaper than Fuji XT-4, really interesting! But the Panasonic S5 is always on sale and just getting cheaper, hard choice, amazing video features, best of the best IBIS versus an okay APS-C camera with the body of a freaking full frame camera and okay video features, damn.
The xt4 is a far superior camera to the R7. The fact that it is back side illuminating is a huge deal and ALONE worth paying a little extra for. Besides that fuji glass especially the 16-55mm f2.8 is so sharp that the xt4 can’t even take full advantage of it. Also 400mb bit rate in 4:2:0 10bit h265 is pretty nuts and all that in 4k60p.
@@adnan_velic Fuji XT4 has a lot of impressive specs but one thing it does not have is good ergonomics. The 16-55mm f2.8 is also interesting lens but its pretty old when compared to Samsung 16-50mm F2-2.8 considering the Fuji one is larger. Sony also has some really small f2.8 zooms for their APS-C's, and with stabilisation, if Fuji made a camera with a regular body with good grip and a F2.8 zoom with built in stab and small size, it be a killer system honestly.
@@Emilioh888 S5 AF is good if you tell it what to do, as long as you got light and contrast it can get the job done well, I agree its not perfect but its like, these days you buy a camera with compromises, its just matter of what compromises you can live with.
@@SMGJohn I got a small rig grip for mine. Fits perfectly and gives me additional benefits besides better grip. The Samsung lens is designed for a camera that is obsolete NX mount…. Sure there are better options in lenses but I’m saying if you’re looking at an R7 specifically this cannot compete with an xt4. Also that IBIS in the xt4 is really good at 5.5 stops. I had an S5 as well and I enjoy and prefer the image coming out of the xt4 much more. The dynamic range out of the x trans sensor is pretty damn impressive. Not as much as the S5 but certainly better than a canon R line camera.
I have a 800D today and are looking to upgrade in the future. The full format cameras in Canons line may be too expensive so one of theese may be more suitable. My biggest problem with my current 800D is the noise. Anything above ISO200 get noisy as hell, and without professional glass its really hard to photograph birds and other wildlife. Especially if you may want to crop some afterwards. It will be really interesting to see what kind of low light / nosie performance theese two cameras have once the full reviews come out.
I really wish companies would cater to the snapshot and street shooter who likes quality. The M6II was great. Compact, flip up screen for waist-level shooting. The X-E4 too, but they seem to be fading out of priority for larger chunky tank bodies. And if they do make something like the A7C it's so hindered by bargain tech it's not really worth it, especially for the price.
@@gtaliano I've never seen a cell phone that could keep up with something like the Ricoh GR even. There's got to be a market for people who still print work.
I LIVE using the main rear dial on my Z's! I have it setup to work in S and A priority modes. This is a great review because that might be a deal breaker for me. Having something important on a dial that doesn't lock is not good as most have experienced on the Z lenses custom dial. I find the front/top dial much less ergonomic than Nikons too. Not having a locking exposure compensation dial on EVERY camera is a bit strike. I wish these had a warm LED flash/fill/model lamp on them. I'm going to try one out anyway! What APS-C's really needs is a pro level 15-75mm f4 or f2-4 lens. That way you get a better size and performance balance. Sigma's 17-70 was very popular for this reason as was Nikon's 17-55f2.8DX.
So what happens to Canon’s M-series cameras? It seems unlikely they would support two lens mounts for APS-C going forward. Are those in the M-mount system SOL for future camera and lens releases?
I‘m not sure if you‘re all right with the buffer. I looked at the spec sheet. With 15 fps it‘s possible to shoot 12 seconds in c-raw before the buffer is filled. No matter if electronic or mechanical. And this time you can change the burst rate with electronic shutter too. This are about 200 pictures in 12 seconds in c-raw. What other camera in this price range can do this? And the 30 fps are great for focus stacking and pre capture. In c-raw you can take 2 or 3 seconds of pictures if i remember right. More than enought to nail the action. Can the Z9 take 30 fps in RAW? Or our three times more expensive R5? Not even for one second if i remember right. Maybe it‘s not that worse like it sounds at the first look 😉
Would love to see EF compatibility with these, especially some classic EF-S lenses such as Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, Canon 10-18 f/4.5-5.6, Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and Sigma 50-100 f/1.8. In fact, if Sigma manages to get those guys over to RF mount natively, that would be a killer combo. The Sigmas + a native Canon lightweight APS-C birding lens, is the dream. Cheerio! And thanks again, Chris and Jordan :)
The thing about Mirrorless is all lenses ever made for both DSLR and Film cameras will fit it. All you need is an adapter with the correct flange distance.
@@davebassP5 Sure better order soon, but as how the delivery situation is at the moment, I doubt that the units will be in the hand of the customer before september ;-) We'll see how long we get an adapter for free.
It looks like, with video-on attached to the on-off switch, the R7 has 3 programmable custom modes for video as well as photo. That function is sorely lacking on the R6. I also presume that's a full-size HDMI port under that door. How did video nerd Jordan not touch on the HDMI since he's always complaining about mini/micro HDMI ports?
Good to see canon AF finally surpass Sonys AF especially animal eye af. If canon starts to make small compact cameras they can take out Sony in the hybrid section to be honest image quality is superb and now video is getting better. My a7iv AF struggles with birds behind cages while the canon r6 grabs the eye right away. Kudos to canon.
Loved the video. What did you mean when you stated at 6:10 minutes that you are on Continuous Auto Focus, use the Subject Detection that jumps from branches to the birds. You find it is easier to use the Subject Detection, get your Autofocusing, then stop Auto-focusing,, and take the shots you want. What are you changing?.
I think no, they are for very different users. The M50 is still a bestseller, I hope they upgrade it as I have many M lenses. If not, i will buy an R10 and make an M mount for it (the lens protocols should be absolutely compatible)
I think they released these cameras because there is some demand for it. Personally I used both FF and crop systems, these 2 bodies are for wildlife/sports shooters, they are not replacing the M system. These are huge compared to the tiny M bodies.
I’m glad he mentioned the size of the lenses being too much for the r10. I was wondering if maybe pairing it with the rf 600mm 7.1 would be a better fit
The rolling shutter effect on football was amazing. It made real life look like the NES game Nintendo World Cup back in the 80's/90's with supershots where the ball would warp to an ellipsoid.
Both seem great cameras. I currently have a canon m6 mkii and the R7 with the IBIS sounds and looks amazing but is it worth the higher price over R10? I don't do much video. Also no way to use any of my EFM lenses is a bummer.
At last an APS-C mirrorless. I have been waiting for long. The R7 seems to to be the spiritual successor of 7D. And i love 7D. I have one. Hope to test and get the R7. Just one berry berry important Question. Does the evf blank out while using continues shoot mode???
.. A good chunk of the video on the (presumably) R7(?) was very shaky.. (around @14:00) The R7 is supposed to have OIS on those lenses and IBIS no? Were those parts shot on the R10? or was it just a very high zoom level? Thanks
Are you kidding they didn't even inquire about if the bodies will be offered in red (like his shirt) or white in addition to black. Some journalist.. ;)
I am a teacher and will be adding a few more cameras for next year. In my opinion, the R10 and R7 don't offer enough for the money for me to change my mind from just getting more cheap T series Canon dslr's given my use. I did just get them an R6 however for night sports. All things considered, the R6 is the real bargain in Canon's line up.
To me, this is to just get the low end, beginner market again, especially with the R10. I can't see them fleshing out the APS-C RF lens line-up, just as they didn't do a lot with the DSLR APS-C lenses. The R7 could be useful for birders and people that need the extra reach of the crop though.. I have a Canon 70D, and will be going to Full frame as soon as I can scrounge enough money to make the transfer with a couple of lenses, but it's most likely going to be Sony Full Frame. I may consider something like a R10 as a replacement for my 70D as a short term upgrade, (if it is an upgrade for me) but here in Australia, The R7 is only $100 less than a Sony A7III, so I wouldn't want to spend that kind of money for a stop gap camera, I would just spend the money on going full frame.
Except the X-S10 is full of dead pixels (after the first shoot), that don't go away... or at least the two brand new ones I got did. So I swopped it out for an X-T3 and I didn't have any issues... Except the on/off switch getting stiff until barely movable when the camera gets hot and it's less than a year old. Trying to figure out if Fuji in South Africa is a joke or if the brand is not as good as I hoped for it to be.
Why did they change the control wheels? Don’t Canon have any contact with actual users? It would have been interesting to see a poll about the control wheels amongst existing Canon users.
I am an enthusiast photographer with my main focus documenting family, namely my 3 kids as they grow up. I'm mainly shooting portraits and capturing video. I have been shooting with a Canon 40D for years, and it has served me well, but its time to upgrade. I wanted to upgrade to mirrorless but was not impressed in the reviews for the R and RP. I was hoping that the R7 or R10 would be a full frame sensor. It seems that everyone is stating that the R7 is ideal for sports and wildlife, which are not my focus. I want to take photos and videos of my family, and be able to capture good video. Should I go with the R7 or with the R or RP?
Already preordered an R7, it should pair nicely with my 100-500 for wildlife and BIF photography. Along with my R6, I should be good to go for some time! Until the next great thing comes along. 😳
Could you guys do a comparison between the R7 and the R6? Though they seem very different, a lot of people could genuinely be looking to choose between these models? The new "RF-S" lenses will fit on the same RF lens mount & just be smaller (& lighter) to form a smaller image circle? Will R7 & R10 work with existing RF lenses?
Canon is seriously catching up Fuji and Sony in the mirrorless game, although their mirrorless lenses is still lacking. I think Fuji XS10 is a better purchase compared with the R10 (due to ibis). Anyway, can't wait for what Fuji has in store this 31st.
Long term investment and Value,. Canon is much better,. if you invest to fuji and you buy XT4 your kinda dead end already,. no more growth or Upgrade,. unlike in Canon R7,. you can stepup your game,. your RF lenses can be usedfull in fullframe like R3 or upcoming R1,. then if your video quality begining to step up,. there's Canon Cinema Line,. Real talk,. Fuji is kind of a trash investment,. that camera is for person who does't wanted to grow interms of photography and videography Productions
Nice, very nice that Canon included 10bit capabilities with these! Now I wondering if the recording time limitation can be removed from my R6 via firmware! Canon proved with the R7 & R10 we can record time unlimited! Thanks!
First, thank you for great review. And to Fuji for investing in better sensor and chip technology ! As far as portraits and landscape shots I really, really enjoy my Fuji X--T4 and older gear's results. Comments: 1. If we can screw on a fan why can't we screw on a modular screen? (i.e. have a flippy screen version and a X-T3 style screen which we can buy separately), So neither photographers nor videographers need to compromise for latest tech? 2. Instead of eliminating SS, ISO, and exposure dials, Why not have 3 tactile (clicky) dials each with LED on top (LED would display SS, ISO, Exposure) By making dials with displays, the quick settings C1-C7 would have maximum positive effect, and people who like dials (many people who buy Fuji for similarly to film cameras) I suppose something like that could be done on aperture ring as well: have infinite turn, with an LED F# on the lens: thus aperture settings can be set by camera or manually with. i.e. apparent trend to eliminate aperture ring is worrying. 3. While it is tactile, making the S,C,M switch a button gives the setting C1-C7 modes max positive effect, so I support this new design decision. Also S,C,M switch has always looked a little weak. 4. Having the back dial on the X-H2S not be clickable is fine with me: I find on my X-t4 it is hard to tell if the force I'm applying is going to click it or rotate dial. The larger focus nub looks good on the X-H2S. Standardize it! The suggestions above would reduce some of the parts needed between various X-T cameras. In a supply-chain constrained world, with a lot of camera competition, having fewer Fuji models would help Fuji's R&D efforts stay better focused. Where possible standardize on what makes fanbase passionate. 5. Even if my X-T4 doesn't have processing power of X-H2S, please backport improved AF algorithms. Adding even an additional slower mode (but much more accurate focus!!) would help those of us who want to do light sport shooting, or just take pics of graduations where there are a lot of people in picture. Promises were made about AF improvements in X-T4 that are merely incremental compared to Sony and Canon's order of magnitude improvements. Backport improvements where possible to maintain the brand PASSION that got you where you are. Keep at it Fuji on the R&D side: keep innovating and pushing what is possible on your cameras & lenses. -Ben

I switched from a Canon 100D to a Sony A7 III and I'm thinking about switching back to get more lightweight lenses and Canon colors.
I would love to get a 24mm pancake
Thanks.
Wondering how Canadian photographers will handle the new Wheel & Joystick combo with winter gloves.
S5 AF isn’t on par with competition but image quality is superb
The xt4 is a far superior camera to the R7. The fact that it is back side illuminating is a huge deal and ALONE worth paying a little extra for. Besides that fuji glass especially the 16-55mm f2.8 is so sharp that the xt4 can’t even take full advantage of it. Also 400mb bit rate in 4:2:0 10bit h265 is pretty nuts and all that in 4k60p.
@@adnan_velic
Fuji XT4 has a lot of impressive specs but one thing it does not have is good ergonomics.
@@Emilioh888
S5 AF is good if you tell it what to do, as long as you got light and contrast it can get the job done well, I agree its not perfect but its like, these days you buy a camera with compromises, its just matter of what compromises you can live with.
Street photography is moving fast towards Cell Phones.... sadly.
@@gtaliano I've never seen a cell phone that could keep up with something like the Ricoh GR even. There's got to be a market for people who still print work.
@@-grey i said sadly. Because of safety and convenience. Not Quality. I agree with you.
@@gtaliano fair enough, my mistake. What do you mean by Saftey.
@@-grey Safety,
I LIVE using the main rear dial on my Z's!
Any news on the ibis wobble at 18mm?
Test shots looked great guys!
Really strange there’s no battery grip option. Why did Canon do this?
Please compare these cameras to the EOS Mark 6 II.
I'm a filmmaker using a 90D and man the R7 video specs make it look like a cinecam compared to the 90D. Wow!
I think the R7 should have been named the R8 and left open the R7 for a stacked BSI sensor, a CF Express card and controls of the R5 🤔
Yes, but I think either the RP or the R well be called R8 in the future
They could have done all those things, but the body would cost $3,000 dollars. Not the market they were going for.
So what happens to Canon’s M-series cameras? It seems unlikely they would support two lens mounts for APS-C going forward. Are those in the M-mount system SOL for future camera and lens releases?
Any idea if a battery grip will be available for the R7?
Best reviews on these new cameras
It would have been nice to see how an adapted EF-S lens like the 17-55mm f2.8 do on these
Would love to see EF compatibility with these, especially some classic EF-S lenses such as Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, Canon 10-18 f/4.5-5.6, Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and Sigma 50-100 f/1.8. In fact, if Sigma manages to get those guys over to RF mount natively, that would be a killer combo. The Sigmas + a native Canon lightweight APS-C birding lens, is the dream. Cheerio! And thanks again, Chris and Jordan :)
In short term, need to buy the EF-RF adapter, and then can use all the EF-S glass. For people looking at the R10 price range, that is a great option.
The thing about Mirrorless is all lenses ever made for both DSLR and Film cameras will fit it.
All you need is an adapter with the correct flange distance.
I understood that these will be sold WITH an EF-RF adapter
@@michaelstoeckel2954 only the initial supply until Sept 2022. Then you will need to buy it as an add on.
@@davebassP5 Sure better order soon, but as how the delivery situation is at the moment, I doubt that the units will be in the hand of the customer before september ;-)
We'll see how long we get an adapter for free.
Micro HDMI port. Jordan is annoyed.
Winter is the best time to visit Orlando, although it is a pity sunset is so early.
What are you changing?.
so many new cameras lately, but so little glass, cameras are already really good, i'd love to see more compact lenses
Is there a batterygrip available for the r7 camera?
Something about the way Jordan said “They’re so handsome!” made me burst out laughing as I was quietly watching this at my desk haha
Thanks for the overview! I’ve been waiting for an R7. Totally agree on the dials though.
so Canon m mount is effectively dead?
I like how Chris his eyes spell murder and mayhem during the Leaf-blower noise. It adds some realism
So now they're gonna ditch EOS M system?
yup...
I think no, they are for very different users. The M50 is still a bestseller, I hope they upgrade it as I have many M lenses. If not, i will buy an R10 and make an M mount for it (the lens protocols should be absolutely compatible)
Well, 8 EF-M lenses since 2012-2022, vs 24 RF lenses since 2018-2022, I think it is pretty clear. The last EF-M lens was back in 2018.
I think they released these cameras because there is some demand for it. Personally I used both FF and crop systems, these 2 bodies are for wildlife/sports shooters, they are not replacing the M system. These are huge compared to the tiny M bodies.
@@jasontaycs7195 the lineup is complete, it has everything what a traveler needs. I do not expect or want chunky 2.8 zooms.
I’m glad he mentioned the size of the lenses being too much for the r10. I was wondering if maybe pairing it with the rf 600mm 7.1 would be a better fit
I love the way one of the men widen his eyes when showing auto focus function. :)
Great and detailed first impression! One question: why did you test the buffers using C-RAW and not regular RAW?
Spambots only for dpreview... 🤦
Because it writes faster to the card
I believe it’s buffer is about 100 for c-raw.
Are they 10 bit video ?
The HDR PQ on the R10 is 10-bit, the C-Log and HRD PQ on the R7 are 10-bit.

What about rolling shutter?
A very balanced review. Excellent job
Thank you for the review.
How does R10 with ibis hold against R7 for handheld photography?
R10 doesnt have IBIS, it'll rely on Lens IS.
OMG you guys are right down the street from me. I live in Celebration. I wish I new you were here. I would love to meet you.
Both seem great cameras. I currently have a canon m6 mkii and the R7 with the IBIS sounds and looks amazing but is it worth the higher price over R10? I don't do much video. Also no way to use any of my EFM lenses is a bummer.
Sorry if I missed it. Can you describe the EVF experience? Was there bothersome black-out with mechanical shutter? Compare with other R series please.
before I consider getting the R7, I'll have to check out the lists of compatable EF lenses that can shoot FULL fps in mechanical..if there is one.
Jordan, do the r10 and r7 have zebras?
At last an APS-C mirrorless. I have been waiting for long. The R7 seems to to be the spiritual successor of 7D. And i love 7D. I have one. Hope to test and get the R7.
Just one berry berry important Question. Does the evf blank out while using continues shoot mode???
What’re your thoughts on the “Auto Level”/“Auto Leveling” setting for both photo + video???
.. A good chunk of the video on the (presumably) R7(?) was very shaky.. (around @14:00) The R7 is supposed to have OIS on those lenses and IBIS no? Were those parts shot on the R10? or was it just a very high zoom level? Thanks
The R line is getting confusing
What does this mean for the EOS M?
Buried
Was there anything releases for the M platform since the M50 II?
Nothing yet. These are no match on EOS M considering price or lens selection.
Did I miss the prices being mentioned ?
I would stick with full frame RP over the R7. Just my opinion.

Buffer speed? New hot shoe? Old lenses?
Why did they change the control wheels? Don’t Canon have any contact with actual users? It would have been interesting to see a poll about the control wheels amongst existing Canon users.
Learn something new
I am an enthusiast photographer with my main focus documenting family, namely my 3 kids as they grow up.
I was watching the EOS R6 Review last night from 2020. Jordan's Amadeus shirt has seen much better days.
Already preordered an R7, it should pair nicely with my 100-500 for wildlife and BIF photography. Along with my R6, I should be good to go for some time!
Until the next great thing comes along. 😳
I am buying it for wildlife 🥰 thanks Canon.
Did you color grade footages from R7? Skin tone looks strange sometimes, a bit yellow-ish.
What about a comparison with the Fuji XT4?
Assume its still limited FPS on mechanical shutter for older lenses
any word on a vertical grip for the R7?
Canon is seriously catching up Fuji and Sony in the mirrorless game, although their mirrorless lenses is still lacking. I think Fuji XS10 is a better purchase compared with the R10 (due to ibis). Anyway, can't wait for what Fuji has in store this 31st.
Fuji is way better, the image quality are top notch in fuji maybe the video is the weak point in fuji cameras in my opinion

@text me on Instagram@Official_dpreview Hi. Hope you are doing fine. Is this the way to get in contact?
First, thank you for great review. And to Fuji for investing in better sensor and chip technology ! As far as portraits and landscape shots I really, really enjoy my Fuji X--T4 and older gear's results.
Comments:
1. If we can screw on a fan why can't we screw on a modular screen? (i.e. have a flippy screen version and a X-T3 style screen which we can buy separately),
So neither photographers nor videographers need to compromise for latest tech?
2. Instead of eliminating SS, ISO, and exposure dials, Why not have 3 tactile (clicky) dials each with LED on top (LED would display SS, ISO, Exposure)
By making dials with displays, the quick settings C1-C7 would have maximum positive effect, and people who like dials (many people who buy Fuji for similarly to film cameras)
I suppose something like that could be done on aperture ring as well: have infinite turn, with an LED F# on the lens: thus aperture settings can be set by camera or manually with.
i.e. apparent trend to eliminate aperture ring is worrying.
