- "Sukiyaki" was an international hit in the early 1960s. It sold 13 million copies and was #1 in the USA for three weeks in 1963. I'm playing a Guyatone D-8 steel guitar, E13 tuning (low to high) B, D, E, F#, G#, B, C#, E. Thanks for watching! 😊🙏😎 My website: www.playsteelguitar.com
Doug,
Excellent.
When modern life becomes too consuming, I just pull up you channel & listen to all the great songs you have done from the much simpler past. These are the times & songs I grew up with.
Thanks for a respite from today's culture.
Rick
Thank you for listening, Rick! I appreciate your kind comment.
agree totally
Yes, it's funny how music can transport one to another time.
It is a wonderful way to escape for a little while!
Hi Rick, I loved all the music you made and how can I get in CD format. Can I order it directly from you? Thanks.
Sorry my error. My enquiry is for Doug's music records. Sorry Ric not you.
I love it, don't ever stop playing
Thanks! I still have a few good years left 😁😎
You kill me, Doug! I grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY, above a saloon, and spent many a Sunday in my aunt's bar. I heard Sukiyaki, Stranger on the Shore, Ring of Fire, Walking After Midnight, etc., etc., on the jukebox every day of my young life during the early sixties. Not only do these tunes bring me back, but they fill my heart to the point of bursting, as only music can do. It's that combination of melancholy and joy, and your creative genius, that I just can't get enough of. I can tell you feel the same way. Thank you so much, man, you are a gem!
Thanks Tom, yes, these songs were the soundtrack of my youth too. I learned to play guitar on these tunes, and I was especially drawn to the instrumental hits of the era, The Ventures, Duane Eddy, and all the surf rock stuff. I ended up playing the steel guitar, and now I enjoy playing these tunes on steel. I’m glad you enjoy them as much as I do.
Yeah Doug, how about Duanne Eddy's " Because They're Young" ???
...seems like that's your beat, too....!!!
Do only nerds like this song? I love both the Japanese version and the Disco version. Lol
When this showed up on the hit parade it went to #1. That takes a lot of nerds ... 😂
@@masonsteele1674 well. Or. Our parents. And grandparents. This kind of music reminds me of Lawrence Welk a little bit, and I’m 36. I like him too. My Grandma when I was a kid used to watch Ed Sullivan and Lawrence Welk on PBS.
@@DanielSchmidt94521 .... Don't get me wrong, this is a great song !! It stayed at # 1 for three weeks and was well received by the younger generation at that time. I know ... I was one of them !!
@@masonsteele1674 ok. I wasn't thought of yet. I'll take your word. Lol. Now. Back to ZZTop. Lol
Walter Wanderley has a really good version of this song also.
Funny ..... I remember this song from when I was almost 10 years old, in 1963~!~ I was a little afraid of it, because it was one of the first times that I experienced melancholia from a piece of music,, and so I loved the melody, because it struck me in my heart,,, and now,,, at almost 70 years old,,, I feel exactly the same way,, and as I type this,, my eyes are very watery 😢
Goes to show you how children can, and do understand love loss, even at the tender age of 9 ~!~!~!~ Thanks Doug~!~
Loved this song since I was young and I’m 67 now! Love this steel guitar version! 👍🏻🥰‼️
I'm glad you like it! Thanks for listening 😊😊😁🤠
You’re welcome Doug 😊😊. I love country and country gospel music and steel guitar is prominent both, but this is really beautiful 👏🏻🤠🥰‼️
Man - I love this one, too. I wake up almost every morning and listen to a few of your videos. They actually help me cope with a crazy world. Thanks, Doug.
Wow, so glad you enjoy my videos. 😎
Absolutely beautiful!!
Kyo would have loved it!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Terry! 😊
Fun fact: the original title of the song is 上を向いて歩こう(Let’s Walk Looking Upward)however, the only Japanese words Kenny Ball knew were Sayonara (goodbye) and Sukiyaki (a Japanese dish which uses beef), so he chose his favorite “Sukiyaki” as a title for the English version.
I've heard that story about the name change. The way I heard it, after the song was a hit in Japan and was ready to go worldwide, the record company in London changed the title to Sukiyaki... an easier title for English-speakers to say and remember. It was a wise decision! 😊
In my head I can hear Kyu Sakamoto singing this great song. Another primo rendition by the Dougster. Thanks, dude. Much kudos.
😊👍 I too remember Kyu’s version way back in the day! Love that recording.
Remember that as an 11 year old kid. It just stay with you and this is great. Sorry future generations won’t be able to look back and say “Wow” I remember how that RAP song made me cry or laugh.
I'm glad the song brings back memories for you! It does that for me too. 😊
Nice to have you back with this Doug👍🏻😊
Thanks 👍
Oh I love this. Introduced my kids to it. They laughed but I was happy they d listened to it. You play it so well. Thank you.
Awesome. Thanks for checking out.
I just needed to relax for a few minute so I pulled up your channel. I am a long time guitar player and just wanted to hear some beautiful and fulfilling. I am now 71 years old and I think it might be a little late for me to learn how to play a pedal steel. I would try if there anyone around that would give me starter lessons but, alas there is not. I'll just sit back and listen, dream and wonder.....what if. Thank you for these sounds and memories.
I’m glad you enjoy the music, Karl. Thanks for visiting my channel!
Love this song since I was a kid. Even have the Japanese mono record. You just made my day.
Me too! I loved this tune when I was 13 years old and learning to play the guitar. Great memories. Thanks for watching! 😎
Me as well 😄🙂
Please if you give me the swaralipi of this song and tune of string,
I had the sheet music with transliteration of the Japanese. I can still her some of the Japanese words as I listen.
@@dougsteel I loved this song also and used to play it on a plastic fan driven reed organ that came out about the same time. I'm 78.
Born in 1962, I heard these songs when I was very very young, they are like a ghost in my memory!!
That’s great! These tunes were the soundtrack of my youth too! Thanks for listening 😎👍
I remember when this song was on the radio on the top 40 station. Thank you for bringing back some great memories when I was a teenager.
So glad you like it! It's a teenage memory for me too. 😊
I was stationed on a ship homeported in Yokosuka, Japan when this song came out.
I some find a slow moving peace come over me as I listen to your playing of all those oldies as I’m now 70 yrs young
It was truly a greater time and place . Thank u again sir .
Thanks Mike! I'm one year older than you, and these songs were the soundtrack of my youth too. I learned to play guitar on these songs and they bring back a lot of great memories. Thanks for watching my videos! 😊
@@dougsteel I've commented on so many of your songs and try to have an original comment because I don't know how to express the joy but I'm gonna try a new one....your songs are like visiting a warm sunny peaceful island and feeling the balmy breezes pass over me when I listen to your beautiful music.. BTW I'm also 70, old enough to know what I miss from days of old..
I learned that song in Japanese. It's a lost love song and has nothing to do with sukiyaki. Loved it as a kid. A perfectly crafted pop song. Nice version you got there, Doug.
Thank you! Glad you like it. You're right about the song title. The song was a hit in Japan, and then the record company decided to release the song in the UK and the USA... but they knew that the Japanese title would be difficult for DJs and the public to pronounce. So they re-named it Sukiyaki (a Japanese dish). 😆 That would be like re-naming a popular USA song "beef stew" (in Japanese) to release it in Japan. 😕
Anyway Doug, whether be it Beefy-Stew or Sukiya-Kiss,
I love 'em! ❤😊
I learned the Japanese version also - I was in Japan when this song was a huge hit there- I bought the album in Tokyo, all in Japanese, and learned the song by listening to it over and over. A Japanese/American shipmate translated it into English for me - at 80 , I am still singing along with it tonight as Doug plays the melody.
This sound it's make me sad
I'm deeply....so like time machine get me to retro!!!!! Ohh my god!! It's so beautiful
😊😊🙏👍
Thank you for bringing back one of my favorite songs from my childhood.
I'm glad you like it. The song was one of my favorites too when I was a youngster. 😎
There's something about a steel guitar that is beautiful sound . THANK you .
Thanks for listening! 😊👍
You play well… it is so sad that a lot of so talented artist have passed in such tragic ways … They have left a beautiful Legacy 🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶
When I was in the 3d grade I whistled this tune to the class and they, including the Nuns, went nuts. My Dad whistled and so naturally so did I, I had it down pat.....still do !! LOL At around that time in the 60's Poor People of Paris came out and I nailed it also!!
That was just fantastic. I was in high school when it was a hit.
Thanks for listening! 😊
It doesn't matter the song or the style, "our" Doug Beaumier can do it; and make it sound original. What a great steel guitar player. Thanks Doug for sharing your talents with us kind Sir. Love it!
Thanks Pat! Much appreciated 😊🙏🤠
Pleasure n joy is ours only Doug Brainier it's beauty n your talent is transcendental. Love it. We used to think steal guitar of bygone era, you proved us wrong. Way to go.
What a truly wonderful rendition of a very special song, It's worth remembering the original singer Kyu Sakamoto died along with 519 others when the 747 he was flying crashed in Japan when the botched repair of the rear end of the plane failed and blew off the the tail fin and it crashed into a mountain. Thank you.
Thank you, Glen. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. This song is a childhood memory for me. It was a hit on the radio just a couple of months before the Beatles broke out big in the USA. I’m always reminded of that era when I hear the song.
That had such a clear rich tone, it sounded great.
😁😁👍👍
the octave shift (1:40 and 2:53) is just magical..uplifting. Thanks for a great performance.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊👍
You make that look so smooth and effortless. Awesome! Thank you.
Thank you! Cheers! 😊🙏🤠

This was a perfectly crafted pop song and one of my faves from when I was a wee lad. Most expertly played.
One of my favorites too back in the day. This was a #1 pop hit in the USA just a couple of months before the Beatles came into view and changed the world!
Awesome Doug , I haven’t heard that song in years and absolutely loved the sound of the steel😍
Thanks Lyle, glad you like it! 😊

Beautiful Doug. Very pretty song. Fantastically done
Glad you enjoyed it!
I look up when I walk so the tears won’t fall
Remembering those happy spring days
But tonight I’m all alone
I look up when I walk
Counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those happy summer days
But tonight I’m all alone
Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies above the sky
I look up when I walk so the tears won’t fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I’m all alone
Remembering those happy autumn days
But tonight I’m all alone
Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
I look up when I walk so the tears won’t fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I’m all alone
Thanks for the nice translation of Kyu’s lyrics! As a Japanese, I can’t help listening to this song without tears thinking of the tragic way Kyu died. But along with this song, he’ll always be remembered with his ever so smiling face. He had the most biggest smile anyone could have .
I love the way that you can play tunes which I can only vaguely remember and make them sound wonderful. Thank you so much.

Thanks, I appreciate that. 🙂
Still a great sound in 2024. Thank you
Welcome back! Glad you dig it. 😎
Beautiful!!
Thank you! 😊
Cool performance!
Ei Rokuske wrote the lyrics on the death of his mother. The first line is “Let’s walk with eyes up, not to shed a tear…”
I don’t have any idea why this song is titled “sukiyaki” in English, and this title doesn’t seem appropriate to me.
In spite of the event, cheerful major version of this melody was accepted from the very beginning of its life. Apparently Ei also liked this version, don’t have any idea why. The melody was composed by Nakamura Hachidai (d.1992).
Ei Rokuske did a lot for afterwar Japanese culture. He passed away several years ago.
Thanks! Glad you like it. The title “Sukiyaki” was a marketing decision made by the record company. After the song was a hit in Japan, the record company decided to release the record in English speaking countries. But the song’s Japanese title was too difficult for English speakers to pronounce and remember. So they called the song Sukiyaki because it was easy to say and remember in English. Of course, Sukiyaki is a Japanese hot pot dish and has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song! Anyway, it worked! Sold millions of copies. 😊🤗
I was 16 years old and heard this song for the first time as I walked into the kitchen. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I remember it well too! I was 13 when it was a hit. Love the melody. 😊😊👍
WONDERFUL, YOU NEVER FAIL TO PLEASE. I WAS 12 WHEN THAT SONG CAME OUT. I REMEMBER THAT SINGER HAVING A FAST VIBRATO. LOVE YOUR STEEL!
Thanks for checking it out, Woody. I was 13 when the song came out and I memorized the Japanese lyrics, although I had no idea what they meant! 😆
Wow! Great work friend.
Thank you! Much appreciated 😎😊
I enjoyed that so much, I wish i had leaned to play the steel guitar, would love to hear more from you Thank you
