    Practice standing up. By that, I don't mean practice getting up off the couch. I mean practice playing guitar while standing. I wish I had realized this earlier. When it came time to play my first shows, I realized I had no idea how different it would feel to play while standing, how long or short my strap needed to be, or even how to use a strap. There was also a fatigue factor I hadn't gotten used to. My shoulders would get tired. So, practice while standing.

      I saw a Steve Vai interview where he talked about practicing in front of a mirror, to practice your moves so as to not look boring or disengaged while playing
      My band director from high school would say you perform how you practice. And then he’d also say practice at home; rehearsal is not your practice time

      We all learned the embarrassing way. Don't worry I practice while walking people look at me like a lunatic. I don't care I'm 41 years old. I go on a walk and I walk with my acoustic strap to my chest, learning new cords and learning how to sing and play at the same time, which is almost impossible for me, but I'm getting better at it.
      I get my Fitness in, and I learn new chords
      Whoever says, that's an adult that has no time to learn a guitar is making up excuses if they work out, they could always strap a guitar to their trust
      It's like the AAhow far you're willing to go for sobriety
      Man playing the guitar teachers me way more than just playing the guitar. It's all metaphor to my life.

    Play the chord progression through once and hit the loop on the second time round as you start again. Hitting it and starting to play almost invariably leads to a really obvious jump every time it cycles.

    • @johnmaher5887
      @johnmaher5887 8 місяців тому

      Good advice. I also find it helpful to stomp your foot to the beat (next to the pedal) for a few beats before, so you get it in time, and then just move your foot over and stomp the pedal on the beat you want. Trying to time a single stomp just right can sometimes be awkward and end up slightly off beat.

    Probably my favorite single pedal that I ever owned was a Boss RC-3. I paired it with a Boss FS-6 switch pedal to make it simpler to use. I sold it a few years ago and I still miss it. I literally recorded entire album's worth of material on it. I'd load drum parts onto it from my PC and then go nuts...adding bass, more guitar parts and sometimes even keyboard parts. They're an incredible tool for practicing as well.

    So I’ve been asking for this for years…maybe you have the influence to get pedal fabricator to consider it.
    A basic loop pedal, with a basic LED “screen” to show the length of the loop, plus two EDIT knobs, One on the left of the display to shorten or tweak the start of the loop and the other on the right to shorten or tweak the ”end” of the loop.
    That simple. No drum
    Machines or click tracks, just a user friendly loop pedal that allows the user to easily “close the loop.” Seems so obvious, but no one makes one. Please help.

    Seems like looping pedals are useful only for genres that have short repeating chord progressions and no refrain. How many times do you go through the progression? More than one? How do you get the quantization right at the end of the loop so the beat isn't thrown off? I bet these are questions your niece would want to ask.
