Ran into an old friend I knew from the rough days growing up who had DID. She grew up and eventually left her parents house who had mentally abused her her whole life. When she dot her diagnosis she brought her family with her to her counseling appt and had the doctor explain that the different “identity or identities” that’s she had most likely were split off to protect her from extremely harmful experiences or trauma. Absolutely broke her mom but that’s also when they got a therapy recommendation for her dad that lead to a diagnosis of psychopathy and some form of narcissistic personality disorder for her dad. He had been manipulating her mom into thinking that the way they raised her was okay. Now they are divorced and she is tentatively building a new relationship with her mom
