Mia Morris - Don't Do Sorry (Live at The Listening Room) Song Suffragettes

  • I released, Don’t Do Sorry in 2021 as a pop/raggae song along with around 10 other songs that year. For many years I’ve written raggae inspired songs along side my more typical rock or alternative releases however in the last year, I’ve been recording and releasing more ska music. As I’ve discovered how much fun it is to play my more recent ska songs live, I’ve been experimenting with reworking some of my earlier songs under the same influence. Don’t Do Sorry happens to be a perfect fit for this sort of adaptation as reggae and ska can be very similar in everything except BPM.
This video is a recording of my solo looping version of this song from a few weeks back. If you follow me, you probably know I’ve been playing for years at a club in Nashville called, The Listening Room with the Song Suffragettes on Monday nights. You may also know that I’m more than happy to experiment with my performances during my weekly appearances knowing quite well there may be mistakes or a complete train wreck while I try new things. After almost 5 years of performing in that venue one of the many gifts that opportunity has provided is the following understanding:
Performances are infinitely more fun for me when I’m playing right at the edge of what I’m capable of. If that wasn’t enough, (and I actually think it is) I also believe there is a much better chance of capturing that magic thing that sometimes happens with an audience during a performance when everyone is feeling that excitement together. I went ahead and uploaded this particular performance because that night was a perfect example of that dynamic turning into something fun for everyone instead of a train wreck :)
I’m 19 years old and I’m a professional musician, songwriter & artist based out of Nashville. I play lots of instruments but the ones that I’m hired to play most often are drums, cajon and bass. I’ve been posting music related videos on UA-cam since I was 9 years old and began playing professionally at 14. I’ve always loved music and I’m grateful that it’s also become how I now make a living. This channel started as a combination of my fascination with drums and UA-camrs and it’s now turned into a much larger music and music business diary. My goals haven’t changed all that much over the years and stay pretty simple. I’d love to keep making music and hope to keep getting better at it.

ha :) well thanks, and every once & awhile they do but I should also say, they brought me on to their show when I was only 14-years old. That's a pretty big leap of faith and I think we have both benefitted so much from it. I've been able to learn things that only playing in front of audiences for years and watching a bunch of other pros do the same can teach. I've also made a ton of Nashville connections & been hired to play for countless other artists directly from the hundreds of shows.

Great performance Mia. The train certainly didn't jump the tracks this time. Although as fun as that is to watch and even more fun to watch you handle that when it happens, I love it when everything works too. I also love watching people react to you. The other musicians are just there with a guitar, but you're there with a bass, guitar, a looping machine, a tambourine on your foot, and two foot pedals. The look of wonder and awe in their faces is priceless. Then when you start playing and looping and changing instruments, they understand why you need everything. Anyway, I love watching you perform and always love it when you post a video.
I believe you're a big Halloween fan (if I'm not mistaken - and I never am 😛), so I hope you have a great time doing your scary whatever you have planned and also enjoy the rest of the holiday's forthcoming.

With as many things happening when I perform these versions, there are definitely some glorious disasters and I'm with you, those can be their own sort of entertainment. I really appreciate your kind comment so, thank you. I would also say starting with drums makes all of the, "limb independence" stuff I do when playing as a solo act much less foreign. It really has felt like a pretty natural progression that was partially inspired by just keeping the shows more exciting and interesting for me. It's an awesome bonus when the arrangements start to connect with the audience the way they have been more & more lately.

I started with a boss RC-300 but my recommendation would be to start out with a DAW based loop module. If you use Ableton as your DAW, I know version 10 & older have loopers that can just be dropped in. I haven't upgraded for awhile so don't know about version 11 but I'd start with software instead of grabbing a standalone box if you're building a home studio anyway - have fun!
