Final ChouChou video: • How to Make Chocolate-...
See how I added a cute animated character, ChouChou, into real footage using Blender, After Effects, and Davinci Resolve. Also featured is special guest, Kyle Balda, who directed and animated the final ChouChou piece. Kyle has a long, successful career in animation at Pixar, ILM, and Illumination. He was kind enough to share some tips on character design and animation. Enjoy!

I’ve seen countless VFX tutorials over the years, but I think this is the first time really seeing what a professional workflow looks like. Thanks so much! And amazing results, of course :)
Thanks so much, Ronald! I'm glad this helped you understand the workflow.
@@InLightVFX are you going to make series of this like other parts will also come to make all those shots u show in start?? I really love this ❤❤❤❤
Working directly with a big-time animation director? Finding out he also chose blender for this? you providing clear instructions for this great animation?
That's awesome!
I agree, it's so cool to see more and more industry professionals like Kyle using and loving Blender! Glad you liked the tutorial!
This has the most convincing patron plugs
This seriously makes me so happy. Everything in this tutorial is gold.
Damn, best real Blender production video I've ever seen. In three minutes I can find you 20 videos on how to sculpt a girl with ridiculous proportions, but very few on getting real work done. Great stuff. It's also great to see Blender holding up to real production.
Thank you, Andy! That's very encouraging to hear.
these are the most professional and high quality 3D tutorials I have ever seen, hats off Jacob
This is one of those videos that when you find them, you can't help but think "I can't belive I'm watching this video for free". The amount of knowledge I've gotten from just watching your workflow really makes me want to subscribe to your patreon, and I probably will in a couple weeks.
the indepth explanation and complexity of workflow shows much you put effort in these videos, this is truly class
I've learnt more from this video than many many so-called tutorials over the years. Finally a breakdown of blender passes and workflow in AE, thank you so much. subscribed!
Your tutorials are always top tier!
This is not one of the best animation tutorials I've seen, it is simply the best animation tutorial. Period, it's just No. 1 in layout and production value. Amazing
Thank you, Pixxo. That's very kind of you :)
3 ppl are jealous they don't know VFX. This is BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you Leslie!
thank you so much for videos like this. It is very valuable for us people who are interested in animation. It's challenging and fascinating at the same time.
This is so cool! Very professional looking result and it's very fun to see all this behind the scenes!
Mario! Always means a lot coming from you, thank you!
This is really, really good. Just stumbled on these and they're just so well done. Props sir!
The only person for whose patron I'm willing to pay! Very useful infa bro, you are super cool!
I am amazed...I wonder if I would ever be able to acquire these special skills...hats off!
Wanted to say thank you for creating and sharing these videos. They are honestly on another level. There is a lot of great info in your videos that I'll be applying to my own projects.
So happy to hear that - thanks for watching!
Bro your content is GOLD
This is the most underrated video tutorial!!!
Absolutely top tier work! Loved the presentation in this
Hey James, really appreciate it man!
This is WAY over my head in terms of what I know about 3D, but HOLY Sh*T , this is someone who knows their stuff. Can't imagine how long this has taken you to make. Well done! Very insightful!! :D
I can't find another word to qualify your work showing on this video, it's a masterpiece .
This is so useful, thank you. There’s a lot of good blender animation tutorials but it’s so hard to find tutorials on how to organize assets and more complex projects.
I'm glad this helped, Doda! Thanks for watching.
Bro I love you. Not only you are great artist... Your teaching methos are so clean and easy to follow. And you share one of the bests workflows I've ever seen. For guys like me, just starting in VFX this means alot. I'll hop to your Patreon. Thanks!
Now the shadow catcher works great!
This is the advanced level. Mesmerizing. 😀
This is going to be fun.
Amazing!! This has inspired me to go further into making Animated things!! Thanks soo much
I don't even use blender and I loved every second of this!! Great Work man
Yo Collin! Haha thank you! Your kind words made my day :)
You make incredible contents. From your videos to printouts. All very well throughout.
Even tho the color picker from AE is useless, this is the first time ive seen an AE user actually trying to match blacks by value instead of that god awful amateur way of just adjusting curves by eye. Good job.
What an amazing video! Really deserves much more views, great job man!
I use High Pass filter in Syntheyes for tracking a lot of shots and it was interesting that you did that in After Effects, btw have you ever used Syntheyes?
And again thanks for high quality trainings, really top notch.
Earned yourself a new subscriber! Excellent content! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Met Kyle in Visby 2003, where he gave a great lecture.

My god its so really cute
Awesome! Thank you!
This is soo lovable! Did you use ACES for the rendering?
great in-depth process! thank you for sharing. Sorry if this has been answered before, but how long was each process?
Thanks! I'd say each shot took about 2-3 hours from tracking, scene setup, rendering and compositing.
Great video thank you
Sure thing!
Sir please PLZZ bring more tutorials on fussion plzzzzzzz
Hi. I was considering signing up for patreon, only it seems that the contents are no longer being updated. You will continue with the project? I found your work amazing and I ask you continue to share. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hi there and thank you for considering the Patreon. I do plan to release more tutorials but some other work/life has been distracting me from youtube. If you are subscribed you will see when the next one is out :)
I like this video
Thanks for this. Revisiting it it I have a question. You mention during lighting, that you added a 360 photo that is not an HDRi for the reflections. Is this added in as an environment texture still as if it was an HDRi or was a skybox texture created somehow?
Hello there! Yes, it was added as an environment texture just like a regular HDRi.
Very nice ! :)
one day i want to archieve something like this LOL
thank you for this
Did you use to make tutorials or videos before your oldest upload? I feel like I’ve seen you years ago when I was obsessed with film riot
Play envy you. I've always wanted to, and still do, do animation.
Wow....cool
Will MacBooks be enough for the specifications needed for the above work?
Nice ❤️
Cool👍
Can you do a tutorial on how to make Simon on blender
can u tell me plz about ur pc specifications
i also build a pc....
for blender and aftereffect
I don't understand how you got a desaturated composit of chuchu as if it was shot on raw format, I mean you did some color adjustment to match it to the graded (view lut) version of the background footage. or is it that ae gives you numbers for the original video when you hover the mouse on a certain color? does it ignore the adjustement layer?
so now you feel better using AE than fusion for compositing?
Why did you use after effects over something like fusion? Was it ease of knowledge and workflow, or was there a technical reason? Thanks!
Good question, Abhu! I wanted to go more into the choice but the explanation was too long for the video. But it was mostly my familiarity with After Effects over Fusion. I've also found Fusion to be a bit buggy for me and hard to create a real time preview for my comps. All things that are probably a lack of understanding on my part though. Also, given how straightforward the composits were, I didn't mind sacrificing the benefits of node-based compositing for After Effects' layer-based approach.
@@InLightVFX Makes sense, thanks for the reply!
So lots of work with the fake AO-shadows and reflections could have been avoided if Blender had a decent Shadow catcher. I've seen they're working on a really nice one for Cycles X that works with HDRis and reflections.
Oh wow, I didn't know about this! That's very exciting and would certainly make things easier. Thanks for sharing.
did u go to college? if yes what is the name of the college course?
I'm really enjoying your tutorials
after effects and ACES pls
Can I also make VFX like you
Please make a Playlist on UA-cam for VFX. Please 🥺🥺
cool, but the compositionis better in to Fusion!!, why AE_?

I hope you can help me on this matter. Thanks.
excellent but it would have been great if you had tried to teach us instead of explaining what is really going on...
