@@drew4317LMAO thats good
And the same Pro Tools rig lol
@@fatuzi to be honest that one was kind of a flop of a joke. album would not be possible if they didnt use pro tools. Even if they played the parts all perfectly, had all the right sound and reverb equipment that was period correct, and wrote everything with perfect timing, they would still need to splice multiple takes over each other. Layering the vocals, the leads, and the bass guitars when you dont have a full band is a death sentence.
If you have two leads and a bass guitarist and a drummer, you can get some auxiliary vocals and all the lead instruments in one take. but things like shakers, lead vocals, harmonic vocals, and double stacked leads (improves clarity) you have to combine all those original recordings on to one master copy. that would take so fucking long it wouldnt even be funny knowing that they only have two people to actually play anything. They'd be stuck there waiting for ever and their pockets would prob run dry from the amount they would have to spend on studio hours. Things like pro tools and ableton are what give us the capability to do things quickly and efficiently both in terms of time and money.
Just wanted to put the album titles we didn't use here for posterity:
Here Comes The Fun

The first tune sounds just like the intro to “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” by The Beatles lol, so that’s the familiarity that you guys are hearing. @4:09 (“Picture yourself in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies”)
Excellent job as usual 🤘
What is rob rob andrew and greg based on?

It's October so ... The fright album
Hey Rob--just wanted to let you know this series of videos inspired me to do this for my bachelor party a couple years back. We had 5 band dudes and 15 other guys that have never played a lick of music in their life. It was an absolute riot. 11 songs in 3 days, most of them composed and tracked shitfaced hammered. One of the most fun things I have ever done. Thank you for making these every year!
How did it turn out? Did you guys manage some coherent songs? Awesome idea
Post it
would love to hear it!!
Wish I had that many friends lol
I want to hear it!
Major props to:
*Rob* for pushing through a full day of writing/recording while jet-lagged and dealing with physical issues.
*Andrew* for absolutely crushing it and bringing the energy.
*Rob Ruccia* for wrangling the chaos into Pro Tools.
*The camera men/women and the rest of the crew* for documenting everything and providing excellent feedback and support.
I love the heart-to-heart honesty from Rob towards the end. You can really tell that his spirits lifted up a bit for the last 30-minute push. Can't beat that final countdown ending either. All around fantastic work, and thanks for sharing!
The best music in history was all written and created either dead drunk, so stoned space looked small or dead tired.
Or all at the same time.
So, they were in the bare minimum mindspace to do this.
I had experience with all 3 with some friends we thought we made the next Dark side of the moon. I sounded like a middle school rock band lmao@@enlightendbel
That part where they're literally playing the same song in different rooms with all the changes is just incredible. It must be the magic of the studio.
It's beautiful in a way
These guys are synced up like twins its so cool
Sometimes I would humorously say that things perfectly aligned for something to happen, but in this case, things literally did perfectly align.
I'm pretty sure the producer mentions that the lounge has a mic, and it seems like they have some monitors up there.
literally brought a tear to my eye
Thanks for being vulnerable in your edit.
I have to imagine it sucks to feel less than your best when you're in a place as legendary as that, but the vulnerability in the songs and the video form a piece of art that is raw, relatable, and sometimes uncomfortable - and that does a place like Abbey Road proud.
I totally agree, I loved the littel quieter moments. Also, selfishly as a fan their exhaustion may have made the best October1 album yet haha
@@space_1073 quite literally their White Album
If I was the producer, I'd be on my knees BEGGING them to leave "Pretty Raw" as just two instruments, no overdubs. They *absolutely* made the right call there. When your song has the crew crying in the studio, you do not change a thing.
Nah let them cook
timestamp ?
No way, I was super excited to hear Rob sing a great sad melody over it.
Around 32:00
@@KingOfTheBeezWhile I understand their thoughts of wanting to add more, the simplicity really adds to the emotion of the song and ultimately it was the best decision to leave it as it is rather than making it too busy
Rob contributed way more on this album than he probably realised at the time. The most emotional songs on this years album were his. He created the melody for pretty raw and usually is one of my favourite FOO songs. Make it through the night has FOO written all over it and again was Rob's song. They both contributed equally on this album and it shows. You two are musical geniuses and your chemistry together is unlike any other band. Hope Rob gets well soon. Another incredible album.
Right?!? And in a way the roles reversed this time. Rob has the saddest song in Usually. And then Andrew goes hard with Dorian! This whole album sounds so much more mature! I hope whatever Rob is going through dissapears into the oblivion and we can go back go him singing about Greg.
Rob, if you're reading this, I just wanna let you know that you and Andrew helped me a lot by making these videos. I really love music but often struggle with coming up with stuff, and your videos help me get rid of thoughts like "it's not good enough" and realize that not everything that I do needs to be profound, and I can just have fun making music. And genuinely, since I've discovered your channel, I started writing more. So thank you!
Yeah, just do it!
"It's so beautiful, I'm afraid you're going to damage it" is maybe the most perfect thing any human could possibly have said about the music that Rob and Andrew created in that specific moment. Y'all are so inspirational.
I love how the whole crew were practically having to beg them not to overwork that song as they often tend to do, they really heard the music and knew that the beauty in the rawness was greater than Andrew and Robs need for a "polished" song
And it should be twice as long...
Had a blast!
I'm really down at the moment, but you guys rock. Gotta pull my instruments out of their boxes and play.
Though it reminds me of her.
Cathartic? Maybe.
Let's see if I can do something with the cajon I built with the kids and a cell phone.
And Abby rode is hi-la-ri-ous! Rock on!
Anyone know what kind of guitarlele that was? I didn't even know that was a thing until this video. Now i want one.
@@AchillesWrath1 Yamaha do one for about £75 - worth every penny.
I'm convinced Rob X Andrew is the best collab to happen to UA-cam. The sheer quantity and quality of the art y'all have been putting out has been a major inspiration to myself and surely thousands of others. Keep doing you, boys!
EDIT: Also, HUGE shoutout to Jake. The storytelling through editing in this is so thoughtful and touching. What a talented team!
Andrew is a rare creative fountain. He has that McCartney ability to write a song about anything that's both sophisticated and catchy. Rob is mostly playing support here
@@johnpeace971 Weird that you would bring negativity to one of the most uplifting recurring collabs on youtube. I don't think Andrew would appreciate you talking shit about his friend when they both work their asses off to make music for everyone to enjoy.
@@stockicide I only know Andrew from watching Rob's channel, and Rob even admit's he's creatively blocked. I said nothing disparaging, just pointed out what Rob himself noticed: he was playing supporting musician for Andrew most of the project
44:40 Andrew nodding and saying "They're harder." felt like such an important thing to say. The fact that he saw Rob struggling, gave him the space to be vulnerable about it and the gave him the validation with just those two words was inspiring. True friend moment.

Honestly, having that moment towards the end where Rob is feeling discouraged actually elevated this video so much. There's so much that goes into the creative process, and it feels so terrible when you feel like you can't or haven't contributed as much as you could have for reasons beyond your control. I've been there so many times in my life - it becomes a part of your work, and including that moment in the video shows insight and truth into what so many people go through - including musicians like Rob. Hang in there guys!!!
"ugh im so sad. I'm a multi millionaire who gets to make my living doing the thing I love and life is so ugh! Im just soo sad for no reason hmmph!"
I don’t think music youtubers are millionaries
@@SuomiHamalainenYou have no clue what Rob could be going through. Sounds to me like some form of anxiety. Doesn't matter what his income is, his mental health is far important. His fame has nothing to do with this, just because he's a well known musician doesn't mean he isn't human and can't have feelings or health issues. He's a person at the end of the day and he has emotions. The fact that he is one of the most humble guys on the platform as well just makes you look even more muggy. Grow up and get some perspective. Also lose the envy.

I like how Andrew and Rob both were on a different energy level, but they work so well together, that the process just clicked like always. It's beautiful.
Rob saying he felt like he didn't do much even though they just recorded an entire album in a day hit me right in the feels.
It’s very relateable, I’ve had the same thoughts when making music with others
You recorded a WHOLE ALBUM in a DAY in ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS. Saying you didn’t do much is an INSANE UNDERSTATEMENT
When Rob started talking about his medical situation and lack of presence the last two months I started tearing up. It’s hard to hear that someone you look up to so much can be going through hell and not even know it, it’s even harder to be that exposed and open for the world to see. Thank you Rob for speaking out and bringing attention to male mental health struggles. I hope you start feeling better soon brother! Much love
it might be an actual sickness. he said he went to the hospital
Men's mental health is important, but he's talking about a physical sickness that he has.
"Actual sickness" Um mental health is defintally a sickness. Mental hospitals are a thing or it can cause you to have issues due to stress etc@@tjcthulhu
This is another great offering from the guys. Whether it was the jet lag or life, this seemed more subdued than the usual chaos energy in October 1st or Sonic Boom recording sessions.
Edit: Rob's transparency at 45:00 explains it. Hope you get well soon, Rob!
Wow, to think they've only been a band for four-five days and they're already being so emotionally supportive and helpful as they create their opus. Inspirational

just wanted to bookmark the part where "pretty raw" started coming together. so glad the crew convinced them to leave that song alone. that tune is pure magic.

16:28 just goes to show how incredibly synched these two are. How similar their wavelengths are. Finding friends like them is a BLESSING!
17:30 the difference between FOO and the Beatles splitting up to worn on different songs is that the Beatles did it because at that point half of the time they couldn't stand to be working on the music together.
Rob and Andrew can do it because they have complete trust in eachother to make something good. Even when Rob doesnt trust himself, Andrew trusts him and Rob trusts Andrew.
Man, I love Rob sharing his feelings. I'm sure I'm not the only one saying this: you are one of my favourite musicians and an inspiration to learn music. Keep the hard work Rob.
All of Rob’s contributions were amazing and I hope that he knows that and doesn’t let it get to him!
51:46 There's something so wholesome and pure about the way Rob says, "I like this song. I like it."
With how much Andrew focuses on synths and production, it's so easy to forget that he's a good guitar player.
His whammy pedal solo on one of the other FOO albums was insane
The way you guys supported each other even when tired, frustrated, and discouraged was a privilege to watch. Thank you for another great album!
The fact that in this high stress, very limited time project, they took the time to just talk about how Rob kinda wasn't feeling it HIT. Rough patches suck, and the fact that he was so open about it and they took the time to listen and prop him up is incredible. Maybe, the video was a little lower energy, but the music is still good and they still put together something really special. That's what I love about this band, it is raw, spontaneous creativity with absolutely zero filter, for better or for worse
I feel bad for him. This is the best album they have released in my opinion though. He should not feel any shame for it. Even when feeling low he still made some amazing songs
@@BobectorGamesBobectorI’m sure in retrospect he’ll be proud of the album and tbh there was a point in the video where he started to see how good the music was
@@dylanburton4955 At the end when he's adding the drums to Usually and he just quietly goes "I really like this song" is the sweetest moment for me. It's a great track and I'm glad he knows it

This is the one. I know y'all joked about this being the "rough album," but this album has felt the most complete of all of them.
Every time they showed Rob playing "Pretty Raw" while up in the lounge, I was desperately hoping that he would bring it forward to record, easily my favorite moment on the album (and great editing on the video to foreshadow it!)
And really really wonderful to see the support you were receiving from your friends, Rob. Our brains betray us sometimes, making it difficult to see the beauty we create. I hope you see just how much of an impact you've had and continue to have for so many people.

By far the most cohesive first of October album. Sorry to see you so down Rob. Commendable tenacity to power through. Much love
To see how far you two have gone is absolutely amazing, I love First Of October
Shame you're feeling unwell/were feeling unwell at the time, Rob. You pulled through like a champ, I think you wrote some amazing songs!
As someone who has recorded twice this year under the cloud of medical difficulties, Andrew just sitting and reaffirming Rob during the listening made me cry. I've been inspired year after year by both of you and you've made a really difficult stretch of time in my life so much better, thank you both.
Although Andrew and Rob were the sole musicians, it should be noted how much the people around them influenced the final product. This was truly a collective effort.
I mean, Rob Ruccia is basically the third member of the band proper, he's so involved and working his ass off in every one of these. Jake, Tamara, and the other technical/film staff are also wonderful and great consultants and cheerleaders

despite how rob was feeling this time around, i think that "usually" is genuinely my favorite song you guys have ever put out. there's something just so gut punching about how honest it is. rob's lyrics aren't usually all that poetic or flowery but he's so incredibly effective at writing lines that just cut straight through you. as someone who basically finds meaning and purpose in creating art and music, and who's felt that horrible sense of just feeling like you're off and not getting fulfillment out of your art anymore, that song just tore me up. i appreciate his honesty and vulnerability in writing and sharing it, and i really hope his medical troubles clear up. get well soon rob, we love you.
This is so similar to the "Get Back" documentary and it's so interesting to see how such a place can produce so much art and inspiration, regardless of the time period.
Honestly, writing music when you’re not feeling it and dealing with health issues but still getting something of quality finished is a sign of a great musician in my opinion. Get better soon Rob! 💜
The amount of talent in that room is insane. You and Andrew and engineer Rob are on just a whole different level of excellence, year-after-year.
100% agree - just in awe of the range of skills, fluidity, crazy creativity and synchronicity between these 3.
This will be drowned out in the thousands of comments on this but as someone who has been following you specifically for a crazy long amount of time now...This was amazing. I hope you didn't force yourself too much Rob, because the final album is honest, beautiful, fun, touching and just amazing. Hope you get better soon. This was a fantastic FOO album.

Every man needs an Andrew in their life.
I’ve been waiting so long for this. I love it. Thank you sir Rob and Sir Andrew for yet another record.
It's a little-known fact that playing an awesome set at Abbey Road Studios makes you officially knighted.

That aside, the sound of this album is amazing, you guys knocked it out of the park on this one.
Hope you enjoyed London, too!
First, it is hard to watch you so low Rob. It's been a few weeks, but if you still need time take it! Us loyal Foo freaks will be here when you feel ready to be back.
Second, Such a wonderful expansion of the First of October sound. I LOVE this album. Rob might have felt it was subpar, but I am wowed with how much unique and different sounds you created in 12 hours. Also, I was worried when halfway through the video Rob hadn't mentioned the Monster Mash once.
Notes for next year:
• Get lots of sleep the night before
• Buy more than one pick
About the 45 minute mark, I’ve had my chronic fatigue syndrome got worse over the last couple years and I really relate. “I’m sorry, I feel like I’m not energetic enough, I hoped I’d be excited more” kind of vibe is my life a lot when I’ve made plans. I know you’ve personally been vague so I’m not going to speculate, but I hope you know we support you taking the time you need for whatever’s going on.
This comment spoke to me. I've only recently faced head-on an ongoing and very long undiagnosed - now diagnosed - chronic fatigue syndrome and brain fog and I resonate with this, the way it challenges my everyday plans and it even makes me question my identity at times due to expectations both my own and other's of me. It feels impossible to get anything done at times. I wish anyone else going through it nothing but the best, your health always comes first. Do what you love, listen to the songs that charge you up, don't forget to feel the sunlight on your skin and look at the colors. You have got this, don't not give up ❤️
To me Dorian has a double meaning. I get it’s about Andrew’s kid, but musician Ben Kweller just lost his 16 year old son also named Dorian in a car accident this year. The lyric Andrew screams, to be without you sent chills through my body cause his son who passed was the first thing I thought of.
Oh man, that really puts the song in a whole different context. That is so tragic.
When Tamara looks up at Rob while they listen to usually at the end of the day, I straight up cried. The love and caring in her eyes just hits me like a truck.
As a big fan of genre jumping bands like Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Ween, and Frank Zappa, First Of October had unironically become one of my favourite bands. Please do this every year until one of you dies.
You’ve gotta be kidding me! Rob, Andrew, you’ve outdone yourselves!!!
Man, I really hope Rob and Andrew are okay. Both are dealing with a lot and still gave us these songs. Really incredible.
Thank you for the honest depiction of your experience Rob. This years Album in a Day wasn't fun to watch, it was raw and emotional and had a lasting effect that lead to a really creative afternoon of song writing for me. I watched it on a day when I had every reason to feel happy, but didn't, and this video had a really strong positive impact.
The 2023 Album in a Day was creatively inspiring and helped me write a song I'm really proud of! Thank you!
Despite the headspace you guys were in when making this album, this is easily the best one you two have made
Rob, Andrew, thank you guys for being YOU. Doing this project every year is such a treat for us, you guys are the best!
Best album yet. And "Usually" is my favorite First of October song AND it has the deepest line ever, "Usually this would be setting me free." What a gut punch! It goes to show that music sprouts even in pain.
Rob I don’t know if you’ll read this but thank you for doing what you do. I’m a 14yr kid who’s recently picked up guitar and been going through an insanely hard time recently. But your videos just have this certain vibe to them that calms me down and really helps me. Thank you.
The vulnerability Rob lets out is captivating. Also Tamara's frank response to the instrumental piece, which I admit resonates with me similarly, is just a joy. It's wonderful to witness people being honest.
Rob, it's ok not to be over-excited all the time, you brought an unexpected approach this year and it was very good!
*WE LOVE YOU.*
This may sound strange, but I think this album is the most beautiful, brutally honest and perfectly imperfect album you two have written. It really hits me on an emotional level. Thanks Andrew and Rob for keeping it real. ❤
my friend Tom bought this Mellotron and it was being restored at Streetly Electronics when he died. His wife donated it to Abbey Road. Happy to see it being used.
I've been going through a lot of stuff in 2023 and I gotta say, "Usually" is my favourite song from this album. You killed it Rob, thank you for writing that, and please remember that we all love you. I wish you all the best.

The funny thing about this is that Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus did the same thing together, but with lyrics.
They were both told to go write a sheet of lyrics in seperate rooms, but when they came back and compared their lyrics they matched up perfectly. The two were just that great of friends.
Incredible album as always. Seeing the story behind these albums is always such a treat. You're all so skilled, it's really inspirational!
i always go back to these 2
I really like the insistence you tried that one song as an instrumental. I feel that a lot of truly great art isnt adding everything to the Thing, but more knowing everything you can take away and not need anything more. Like Ringo's drumming allowing for the space of the other guys. At risk of sounding too pothead, it's what he's *not* playing, maaaan.
Can’t imagine the overbearing weight of trying to throw together an album or even to document this.. jet lagged! Anyone who’s travelled by a good number of zones is aware just how much worse it is going east than going west. Props guys!
Yes, flying east means having to wake up much earlier than you would want to, vs. having to wait a long time before sleeping when you fly west. It feels so much worse.
Love the album! Been on repeat listening to it multiple times! Fun how it became like Lennon/McCartney thing with them writing and playing on each others songs! And it was also cool to see how the studio and equipment really inspired them! Would’ve been fun for them to double track vocals like the Beatles did… but that would’ve taken double the time 🙃
that was so good, i think i have to watch the video again
I really love that you guys left in that lengthy discussion of what Rob's going through. You could have just cut it out, but giving us a place in that room is really special (and super Peter Jackson "Get Back" vibes as well).

Only part way into it, but the vibe is so different this year. The nervous ‘can they even do it’ energy basically gone considering they’ve done this several times, and are basically doing similar stuff all the time in Sonic Boom.
Got a feeling there’s still going to be a compelling story though, we’ll see in 40mins.
EDIT: holy shit rob. Love the stuff both of you are doing on this album. Less of a goofy vibe this year for obvious reasons, but I honestly like that.
Holy crap, imagine playing on the actual instruments the Beatles recorded some of their greatest hit on....doesn't get more legendary than that!
This is one of the main pieces of content from any medium that I look forward to every year, I'm so grateful you guys are still doing this, even when you're rundown and tired.
The first tune Andrew played on the mellotrone reminded me a lot of Lenny Kravitz "Fields Of Joy" from the 1991 My Mama Said" album, which is a cover of the 1971 song of the same name by the band New York Rock and Roll Ensemble. That was 32 and 52 years ago, which is a mighty long time ....
These great videos makes me really miss the good ol' times when it was ok to spending entire days in studios coming up with spontaneous songs to record and then play live later...
Even if you dont feel it in the moment, the music you guys put out means a lot. You bring a great gift here for a lot of people
That moment where Rob and Andrew unknowingly sync up is special.
The harmony between the two of you is mesmerizing and wonderful. Thank you for the great video.
Always the highlight of the year on UA-cam - and thank you for leaving that moment in the edit where Rob opens up about his recent struggles. I've also been feeling cut off from writing for quite a while now and while it sucks it's good to know I'm not alone in that, and that there's still space for real, sincere creativity when you're feeling low.
