      Eh, we're usually pretty chill about letting people use our organs. They're meant to be played, and good ones are rugged enough to last for hundreds of years under regular use. You're not gonna break them by playing them, and we're more than willing to let you experiment.
      A lot of us got into organ because of the enormous number of possibilities they have, so seeing this stuff as a classical organist is pretty cool. And the added benefit is that videos like this spread the organ to a wider audience, which it definitely deserves. Cheers!

The fact that the church was willing to partake in this adventure is incredible. Thanks also to Rob, his audio/video team, and certainly the sponsors. Oh, absolutely no doubt the stops could be controlled with SysEx commands! If the organ console is that modern and implements MIDI, I'm sure they allowed for external control of the stops. You can essentially do that with the registration pistons under each keyboard already. It's how organists change "patches" so quickly. They set up the stops, then save them as a registration on one of the pistons. These consoles are amazing. They often have couplers between manuals (keyboards) so one manual can play pipe stops from another manual, or the pedals. It's super cool stuff. 😊

    Truthfully - This just helped out that church a HUGE amount. I have run AV at several churches - and the number one thing that goes wrong - the Piano or organ player is sick or can't make it. Now - he can just program his laptop and train someone to run the midi file for him is he is gone... that is huge! Not to mention, I'm sure he could now program duets that are impossible to play with just one person. This opens up huge possibilities for them - so cool!

    Little did they realize that all 9 divisions have their own MIDI channel. The channels weren’t tied to the keyboards or pedalboard. You could have 9 unique parts & sounds running at the same time, not just 6.
    The 3 divisions (portions) that aren’t explicitly tied to a keyboard have a switch (‘coupler’) that connects them to an existing keyboard. These are called floating divisions.

    I think a big problem with Rain also was the (in comparison to the church's length relatively slow) speed of sound, cause it definitely ruined that neatly timed delay.

    • @klabrx
      @klabrx Рік тому +2

      The solution might be to adjust (i.e. time align) the playback within the Midi file or rather the DAW accordingly. A similar thing is done with delay lines in huge venues all the time ... but on the other hand ... you'd have to define where in the building the sweet spot (acoustic point zero) is supposed to be.

    But you might ask, “Why midi out?” Several years ago Richard Elliott wanted a certain sound in a piece of music he was performing on the LDS Conference Center organ for a Christmas concert. They didn't have a rank of pipes for that sound, so he opened a midi stream to a sequencer and the output was played over the speaker system and augmented what he was playing with the regular pipes. The results were incredible, and it was still totally him, just with a sound he would not have otherwise had access to.

    It's soo freaking awesome that John is so willing to share this amazing instrument with you. A lot of people would be hesitant to allow anyone to even touch the organ, let alone play with it in a new creative way. He's so knowledgeable about it and it's history, and it's super cool he is willing to share this amazing creation with the world and allowing you to try this.
    Edit: WOaaahhhhh, even MORE amazing of John!!!! The fact that the midi stuff wasn't connected or ever planned on being used, would have been a roadblock most people wouldn't have worked past. This is soooooo freaking awesome that he had the engineer/mechanic come in and wire things up the right way to make this happen. This is incredible. John is such a great guy. Big Thanks to John for having the passion and creative aspirations to see this through with Rob.
