Seriously though many corporate buildings are fully automated and maintenance personnel routinely controls the entire thing with a laptop to test stuff. a/c, heating, blinds, door access, closing fire doors, lights, sometimes even certain windows can open and close electronically. And if it's a mall, you can blast your tunes through the PA system :D

On the contrary, this is exactly what the engineers had in mind when they put a midi-in port on the instrument.

lol someone took weeks to optimize this thing perfectly then they just throw a midi device into the mix that probably doesn't understand the limits of the device and they push it out.
The guy running the organ is a legend. He completely trusted you with his baby.
Eh, we're usually pretty chill about letting people use our organs. They're meant to be played, and good ones are rugged enough to last for hundreds of years under regular use. You're not gonna break them by playing them, and we're more than willing to let you experiment.
A lot of us got into organ because of the enormous number of possibilities they have, so seeing this stuff as a classical organist is pretty cool. And the added benefit is that videos like this spread the organ to a wider audience, which it definitely deserves. Cheers!

I have a tiny organ in my basement, but yk its not this and it only has one octave of pedals. But the organ is an entire orchestra and the only thing coming close to that I own is the accordion which pales in comparison to this beast

Organs are one of the first forms of synth! Essentially you're just playing with different harmonics and waveforms depending on the design of the pipes!

As an organist, that is a necessary step in playing a piece. The instructions will say stuff like Swell: 8’ Reed, 4’ Flute and you have to find what fits best and put it on a piston for later.
The organist is a blast. He pulled all the stops (lol) to get this working. And he's having a great time, I hope he uses/used the hell out of this after Rob left.

The phrase "pulling all the stops" actually originally referred to an organist playing with them all pulled out.

@@austinmartin6918 Yes Usually we use midi to control other instruments or to expand the amount of stops that are accessible to the instrument.

I find oddly endearing how John called all his professional colleagues, and didn't try to hide the fact that they were shooting a music video. I feel that many people would've omitted that, as UA-cam still appears as a childish job to the eyes of many. That showed how much faith he had in Rob.

It might be MIDI SysEx that is used to control the stops rather than CC, either way, it would be fascinating to see the MIDI output that is produced when changing stops.

Oh, absolutely no doubt the stops could be controlled with SysEx commands! If the organ console is that modern and implements MIDI, I'm sure they allowed for external control of the stops. You can essentially do that with the registration pistons under each keyboard already. It's how organists change "patches" so quickly. They set up the stops, then save them as a registration on one of the pistons. These consoles are amazing. They often have couplers between manuals (keyboards) so one manual can play pipe stops from another manual, or the pedals. It's super cool stuff. 😊
The best part is that it did! Look at the stops at 11:00!

I'm getting married next month and while at the church I noticed the organ had a midi input. Obviously I recalled this video and thought, well we've got to have a go. It was, to be honest, about as hard as you found it. Thankfully the reverend and Organist were game, and many weeks later we now have a fully midi programmable church organ for our wedding. Unexpected benefit is also the church can now freely program their organ too which is fantastic for them. So thanks for this video and inspiring me

Yes. Especially if they can use signals to represent the division controllers.
For solo pieces, yes. When accompanying singers, the organist needs to adjust the tempo in real time in order to stay together.

This was all worth it for the Mario theme played on an instrument the size of a building.
I grew up around pipe organs. My grandmother was a master pianist, and organist. She unfortunately passed away several years ago The organ in this video is the best sounding organ I've ever heard. If you've ever been to a cathedral and heard The organ there you have an idea how powerful and rich sounding the organ in this video is. To hear toccata in D heard on this gave me goosebumps. It is and always will be my favorite piece of music by Bach.

This absolutely monumental engineering challenge of an instrument was created because we, as humans, collectively acknowledge the incredible importance of music to connect us, to bring us joy. By extending the capabilities of this instrument beyond what a single person, or even the most synchronized orchestra, can play (which was the original thesis of the organ), we are not only respecting it, but going that one step further in honoring it's spirit.
John discovered a new way to do things on that massive machine! I've never seen someone so open to something so crazy as midi-controlling the organ. This opens new avenues and possibilities. Crazy!
My church has a much smaller (2 manuals) electronic organ. Record and playback is built into it, no need to plug in a computer. The MIDI out is permanently (more or less) connected to a midi sound generator box that adds more sounds than just the organ stops you can see.
John at the church is so darn cool. I love this guy. Please convince him to go do this again with other epic songs that would impress over such a magical instrument.
I love how open minded and even exited John is about using modern tricks on a very traditional instrument. I can see how some purists might object but he seems all for it and I really like that
I guess this is partially thanks to a super-humble attitude of Rob. Which is totally OK and seemingly opens new opportunities for the music world (as a musicologist, this makes me extremely excited).

Little did they realize that all 9 divisions have their own MIDI channel. The channels weren’t tied to the keyboards or pedalboard. You could have 9 unique parts & sounds running at the same time, not just 6.
The 3 divisions (portions) that aren’t explicitly tied to a keyboard have a switch (‘coupler’) that connects them to an existing keyboard. These are called floating divisions.
This video, having come back for like the 8th time in the past 18 months, is one of those rare cases of being a video that manages to draw you in completely and entirely. The technical curiosity to chase this idea of feeding midi into the organ, the problem solving and desire to push on despite it not functioning, the absolute awe when it first works and the majesty of hearing your own (Rob's) music in a fresh and interesting environment. Playing with this new and fun idea, getting Necrophagous and testing a pipe (hehe) dream about it sounding like Bach, giggling at Super Mario and then the utterly awe inspiring, triumphant but sombre Bohemian Rhapsody. A very poignant and present reminder of just how significant the impact Queen had universally in the reactions of everyone there.
Thank you Rob, thank you John, thank you everyone who made this happen, thank you Freddie, you're dearly missed, this was truly magical

The organ is an instrument of all superlatives. Its size, complexity, versatily, history... I can imagine someone who's learnt to play such an incredible instrument could easily overlook Rob's interest, like "who's that guy anyway ? Some random musician making videos on the internet ?"... On the opposite, John has always been keen on sharing is knowledge and passion. And he is seen here sharing the joy and excitement of Rob, experimenting something no one has tried before. This is what real musicians are about. They are so dedicated to music, they love it so deep in their heart, that they're not making it a matter of ego. And that's what made this video even more enjoyable to watch for me.
Love John Sherer, the organist, having so much fun with these UA-cam kids, while continuously showing his skill and his intimate knowledge of the instrument to enrich the sound even more.

I feel as if that one who plays one of those messed up Midis that had all the sounds of a song uploaded to the point where you could hear the lyrics being recreated would certainly mess up the whole building.

I'm a church regular. The organ is my favorite part of the service. I bet this was so cool to hear.
I think a big problem with Rain also was the (in comparison to the church's length relatively slow) speed of sound, cause it definitely ruined that neatly timed delay.
The solution might be to adjust (i.e. time align) the playback within the Midi file or rather the DAW accordingly. A similar thing is done with delay lines in huge venues all the time ... but on the other hand ... you'd have to define where in the building the sweet spot (acoustic point zero) is supposed to be.
Time to play some black midi in the best way possible.

@Matthew Ridgeway The church is basically the resonating body of the organ. The pipes themselves wouldn't sound nearly as loud, if they weren't amplified by the massive walls of the church.

This may be an odd question, but could the MIDI system be used to complement the organist’s playing, allowing them to play pieces too complex to do without the computer (or a second organist)?

@@primethread That must have been an issue with that program. If I am only sending output from my playback program and have no MIDI input selected, there’s no way for notes played on the organ to impact the program. Naturally, you would want to avoid playing the same manual (keyboard) as the computer, if possible. If not, avoid playing the same notes.
Or he can do what they're doing - play it like a synth, play the knobs, while the sequencer plays the notes, at church

Literally would empty my wallet to sit in the middle of this and listen to them play all kinds of music! Amazing instrument, I have no doubt in my mind. I can only hope and wish to hear an organ of this size in person let alone even play it. One of the only downsides to having such cool, expensive and hard to reach instruments.
You can record the true sound of this place using a binaural audio microphone. The video titled "Hear New York City in 3D audio" does an incredible job at explaining this and I'm dying to hear the true power of this instrument. Please like so he can see.

Those microphones aren't particularly great for dynamics though. The more ideal setup in this scenario would be to have 2 decent mono mics with a few feet of separation. Then you still get the stereo field similar to binaural and better dynamics.
Wouldn't reach anywhere near the same feeling. Neither those microphones nor youtube would capture the full range made by a pipe organ. A big part of their "power" comes from sub sonic frequencies with some of the largest organs (quite possibly including this one) going into deep into single digit frequencies.
They would still do this organ no justice. Yes, it would be better but Organs create a music you feel in your chest. Not your head

If you got one of those stereo ear style microphones they use for ASMR you could probably capture the effect you had in the room, at least for headphone users.
you might get some of the space and direction, but it would be nothing compared to the real thing, especially considering they didn't have recording equipment optimized for the room. Maybe you can get pretty damn close to the real thing with professional recording equipment and headphones, but it would never really match the live sound. Not whith the distance involved in such a large, live room and how it echoes about so much. You can feel the low notes of the organ through the pews you sit in, through your feet.
I think these pipe organs are some of the greatest sounds people can possibly make. The cathedral is the body of the instrument just as much as a violins body.
@@AshBarkPerson At minimum you'd need full surround sound to really capture the way the sound travels (since you're dealing with an instrument that rings out from all around the room, not just in front of you), and I can only imagine the difficulty in capturing the various quiet overtones and reverberation without the louder pipes completely blowing out the recording. Being able to feel the sound is more down to your speaker system, as anyone with a subwoofer can attest to, but trying to capture that powerful sound without losing detail? An engineer's ultimate test, or perhaps their worst nightmare.

however, an audiophile surround sound setup, with idealy a 7.2.4 speaker setup, will be able to recreate it pretty well theoretically
i swear, not the person who invented the organ or the person who invented midi would've imagined this.
They gotta open this as a service: email them your midi files and how you want it to sound, they record it with good mics and send back the wav files. Could charge some good money for it, I think there'd be a market

If there is a market for such a service, why can't you just have an organ player play your song and have the sound recorded?
Soundrecorder won't cut it though, you'll need a ton of mics all over the room. But yes you could hire a player as well I guess. Would take more time though as they have to learn the parts.

I was thinking the same thing… He just picked up the phone and said… “We want to wire A to B… Can we do that?” That was just so cool because you have to put his query into context… This is a multi-million dollar $$$ instrument that he wants to “tinker“ with… Many kudos to this organ master!
When you have a multi million dollar organ you tend to get 24/7 365 service calls....

Guaranteed this guy was so juiced to let Rob try it out because he had this in mind... wonderful way to take a venue like that and monetize it. It’d have to be such a cool experience to hear your music or music you love played there. Surely worth tickets IMHO

Classical is very different from metal. Not to say one is better but they are so very very different, even on a organ.
Different, yes. Admittedly so. However, some schools of metal are more directly descended from Classical/Baroque music.

bromie - is it awesome: “yes”, is it Bach: “no”. Everything Bach did was so full of structure, form, and voice leading (the dude could IMPROVISE a 7 part fugue!!). Metal is awesome, but is built with entirely different goals and cohesion. Not that there isn’t some great counterpoint going on in some metal, just different (and Bach was a genius at the highest .01%, very seldom seen in history, so there’s that...). Listen to some Bach, he’s pretty awesome (I might recommend the Glen Gould ‘82 Goldberg Variations recording - freaking awesome!)
Nothing like Bach. Bach has finesse and counterpoint. This chap's noise is noise.

Well, this is freakin' awesome. I mean a human is great an all, but now you've given this guy the equivalent of infinite hands, with the ability to push infinite keys for any and all divisions of time. I am 1000% enthralled...
I want to thank the organist, church, and organ builder for making this possible. I will assume that it cost some money and time to fix the MIDI connection. The fact that the church was willing to partake in this adventure is incredible. Thanks also to Rob, his audio/video team, and certainly the sponsors. I teach audio engineering will be using this video as a tool when we explore MIDI in the future. I think it's really cool that the organ designers thought enough to create separate channels for each keyboard rank. The possibilities are now endless!
I’m betting when they spend that kind of money they get a pretty good warranty, then again they might get phone calls from India saying we have been trying to reach you about your organs warranty.

More than likely they saw a use for the functionality in the future as well, and thought it might be a good investment to be able to use the functionality

Honestly I still come back and watch this video because it's just so cool. Really struck gold here. So cool of him to let you fiddle around with the organ like that, he was so interested in what was actually possible and I feel like the majority of people in his position wouldn't have let a youtuber with a laptop anywhere near an organ like that, but he actually went out of his way to make this work. Super cool dude, and I love that his efforts made this video possible

well its not just a connector, if there is a midi port it means that the organ is prepared to play midi.
so yeah its funny play a huge organ with the pc but its nothing special on this one....

What a great guy John is. He was so willing to just do whatever to help. The man was ready to take apart his organ for you. I am not religious but he is the type of man I would want to encounter at a church.
Why did this make me teary eyed? I guess it gave me hope that good people do exist? I don't know this is weird. its late im rambling.

yeah I said the same thing, John is such an amazing guy. Most people wouldn't let anyone play with the organ, let alone try interact with it in this way. But John was totally willing to share the instrument and his knowledge to help make this happen. And then especially when he started calling the engineer and stuff, like most people would have just stopped at that point and said welp, we can't do it. It wasn't hooked up and I can't go through all that to make this work. But he was more than willing to work through that hurdle and make this happen. It shows John's creative passion for this instrument and his willingness to share it with the world, and that's such an amazing gift.
My guess is that the kids making the video are the sons of someone very important, someone the church is happy to be in good relations with

Ok, if someone was able to learn the limits of what you can do with this stuff, I'd imagine that you could throw some insane, super powerful sounding concerts.
Because I saw at some points those buttons can move on their own so you could go insane with charting.
