I remember when this song came out. My reaction was like yours. I heard of this dude, but his music was followed by a niche audience until he blew up with this song that led to a string of hits. His run and growing popularity led to a role in the Hunger Games movies. There are some songs that exude attitude and cool from the opening bars, like some Prince songs, and this is one of them.

The problem with live DEAD (not the album... the concept) is that you can have a hundred opinions on what's the best shakedown, or terrapin, or.... you get it. . I'd go with my first shakedown (first show) MSG, but that's not the point. Give him ( Mr Video ) the album version of shakedown.... and we can go from there.

Some of their live performances aren't good, and some are fantastic.
But with the Dead, I think most of their studio stuff is lame.
Again, some of their live stuff isn't good, some is great, and some is mind-boggling... although the mind-boggling stuff is hard to find.
So I gave an example of something that is "really good". I don't care which performance someone considers "the best they ever saw" blah blah blah... just simply start with something really good, and go from there.
As far as I'm concerned, Dead studio albums are only good for the lyrics, so you can understand what the F they're saying at live shows.
Not enough ppl mention how foxy that drummer was/is.
