    Just read a story about a tree surgeon in London who lost his life due to chainsaw kickback and came to find out what kickback was so I could grasp the true nature of the incident. Very sad story.

    • @jimmywatsup1
      @jimmywatsup1 4 роки тому

      yeap kickback is definitely up there on an arborist's fear list alongside tree risks. especially when it goes back and up. Sounds like the tree surgeon didn't have an engine brake on his?? or couldn't react in time?

    • @Whoopdewhoo
      @Whoopdewhoo 4 роки тому +2

      @@jimmywatsup1 I'm not sure why it happened to him or what the fault was but I remember he was quite young and it was just such a tragic event. I really felt for his family. I hope there's ways to decrease that kind of risk cos I don't doubt it would be a huge fear for anyone in the job.

    I'm doubting the idea of standing to the side of a cut because if kickback occurs, your hand will likely pull the saw towards your neck. At that point you'll want to hope to God that chain brake engages via inertia.. even then it's probably going to hurt

    No joke! I was cutting a tree and had checked for ANY nails and missed one! It grabbed the nail and sent the flying chain right into my face! It cut not only through the protective gear but gave a pretty good nick to my nose! If the chainbreak hadn't done it's job this could have ended...well...cosmetically worse lol

    I always like to make two precise cuts right next to each other about a blades width apart to prevent pinching. Feel like this should be a SOP for cutting branches and logs that have the potential to pinch.

    • @redclayfarm6490
      @redclayfarm6490 4 роки тому +3

      that's not going to prevent the kind of pinching that causes kickback, when the weight of the log shifts closing the cut, extra kerf isn't going to stop the pinch, proper cutting technique just needs to be used.

    2:30 I’m pretty sure that chainsaws are banned for use in construction in the U.K. Why on earth is he using a chainsaw to cut a thin piece of board? There are jigsaws, circular saws etc. for this sort of thing. Chainsaws on anything smaller than a 2 or 3 inch limb is likely to flick the chain off which is a nuisance and potentially very dangerous.

  • @charlessmith263
    @charlessmith263 5 років тому +2

    Kickback is when the chainsaw, caused by the high speed of the saw blades, is, for whatever reason or reasons, unacceptably is forced back by undue forces right into the path of the chainsaw operator, usually towards the hands, chest, neck, hip, or even the face of the operator, and if the blades touch any of these areas during kickback, serious injuries can result.
    A typical kickback injury risk happens when, say, you use the saw on the bottom of the tree trunk to take the tree down, and after you cut, you pull the saw back of the tree too fast and suddenly, some extra force kicks the saw backward (hence the "kickback"), which forces the whole saw even more backwards towards you and the blades - in just seconds - are in the direct path of you and BOOM! - you are badly cut or lacerated as a result of this.

    He kind of Implys that you someones gona operate chainsaw with one hand lol, Like obviously your not gona go gangster style and use one hand to cut the wood. Its commons sense, and yes you should always have your hand tilted so that if there is a kickback, the top of your hand will hit the engine brake.

    That was not OSB it was AC plywood and in my 40 years of residential construction I have also used a chainsaw it has its uses. cutting a large beam is one, also demo is done faster with a chainsaw. I use what make the job go faster if it gets covered up who cares what cutts it. I see hacks use worm drive saws all the time. its not the saw its the operator that matters...

      Gotta guess you don't use a chainsaw much. Back in the day, Homelite bundled their "Safe-T-Tip" POS with smaller saws that might be used by homeowners. Got one with my 150AO. Never used it. Rotational kickback generally occurs with contact at upper bar tip. See the tips in the vid about preventing injury from kickback. Procedure is much more important than hardware dependancy.
