no grandstanding, no ego, no commercail jive, pure art, restrained, the best speaks for itself, new and creative and historic at same time. 1966 first versions, , amazing they stayed young with the ultimate medicine, love and wisdom, music and taste
Like he thought Miles said, "save the butter for the bread". Apparently Miles said something a bit different, like "don't play the bottom notes' or something. We are still trying to perceive that new direction.
Herbie, this is your song, your world and your heart. THANK YOU for sharing it all us. Your playing is some of your best ever. You provide the glue for all the musicians - laying it down at times - sneaking in golden nuggets based on their solos at other times until...........YOUR SOLO. OMG. The world thanks you for making it such a better place through your music.
It sounds as if everyone is indifferent to those who try to conjure up doom scenarios. Beauty, straightforwardness, and love, all practiced in a gentle way, will always be over the darkness.
yeah, if not the best version, to my memory maybe the fullest and most interesting I've heard- I think it's the addition of the tabla. I've never heard it with that instrument- seems to take it to another dimension.
I have always loved Herbie's music. He is one of the world's greatest, most creative, pianist innovators of our time. Seems like he always manages to keep his sound fresh and exciting and I'm sure there's quite a few people out there scratching their heads, wondering what he is actually doing behind those keys. Some of that is incredibly beautiful but those great sounds are also quite a bit more complicated than meets the eye. The suspense has always been a lot of fun and I'm sure it's keeping some of those other keyboard players on their toes.
This is fantastic old but fresh music by the legend Herbie Hancock. I would have liked to hear more soloing from Ravi Coltrane because of my eternal love for his legendary father, John Coltrane. Otherwise, I appreciate them all, thanks.
Whew! So great. This has been on of my favorite songs for many years, and I love how closely they hew to the original recording...*until Herbie's solo* where he takes it out into mind-bending alternative worlds. Wow, Herbie, forever revolutionary! Thank you so much for your life's work
Herbie is a transcendent human being not least as a musician.... how he suggests ideas to the soloists with his comping... and his solo is still mighty. Plus watching Ravi IS watching 'trane... I love just watching him since his father was gone too quick...
It's like this was composed just yesterday.. still mindblowingly fresh, relevant, evocative, and these guys still make it entirely their own while respecting the classic original. Perfection re-perfected. We are blessed indeed to witness. I never knew until doing some research that this composition was apparently originally meant for a Yardley perfume commercial.
Trumpet feels kind of Hubbard-esque. Short solo, but really nice interplay with Herbie too. Double percussion is nice and light. I'd recognize Brian Blade's drum faces anywhere, lol. Ravi is pretty chill and cool too. And all these years later, Herbie still loves these solos with weird pedals and rhythms that blow up the tension so much, and makes everyone adapt in the rhythm section to tie it all together.
I don’t talk musician talk but I am a dedicated fan.what I do recognize how Herbie ties it altogether with his fury of in -the -moment notes . Ah so lovely !!!
@@MsMuhanji Freddie Hubbard played trumpet on the original record. And "pedal" just means the bottom note is different from the usual root, so it sounds kind of off-balance for a moment. I thought I lost my place a little trying to feel the changes in Herbie's solo, so I figured it was probably that.
I don’t support the UN 🇺🇳 However, this is a special moment we are blessed to have captured. Musical transcends all boarders and institutions of political power. Thank you for sharing.
What à wonderful music and fantastic musiciens !! Thanks !!
Many thanks!
I would like to get this version of Maiden Voyage on CD.

...the improvisational and creative universe of 82 years old Herbie Hancock is something unbelievable...the man is really one of a kind...wow...
100% agree, Luiz! We are so fortunate to have Herbie's leadership!
No words
Zakir Hussain on Tabla , doing Jazz with other maestros is a treat of a life time
Don't Forget Brian Blade on drums !!
Of course!
Stellar drums!
And “ HIS “Spizzichino ride cymbal, the best jazz cymbal in the world …
And clearly enjoying himself!
the greatest of this generation
Herbie playing not a Single butter note even at 82 is incredible!

"Play a butter note, Herbie."
"...I don't think I will."
What's a butter note?

Herbie Hancock is indeed a national treasure.
Randy Brecker has a beautiful tone. So beautifully played!!
This is my favorite Herbie Hancock song ever.

. in his solo, Randy Brecker plays tribute to the late Freddie Hubbard, who played on the original 1965 Blue Note classic album.
A refreshing revisit to one of the immaculate Jazz standards of all time by its composer - the effortlessly agile Herbie Hancock.
It sounds as if everyone is indifferent to those who try to conjure up doom scenarios. Beauty, straightforwardness, and love, all practiced in a gentle way, will always be over the darkness.
In a crazy world, you guys bring a lot of sanity. Jazz with chords, solos, and a great sound..Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This might be the best version I've heard since the original recording. I hope it gets released somehow.
High praise indeed! Thanks for watching, Eric.
@@Jazzday Any chance this will be released to the public? This is exceptional and worthy - not a soul could engage in war while listening to this.

Ravi is true spitting copy of his dad - John and Alice, of course!
I love Ravi's playing. I know you're trying to pay a compliment by comparing with his father but there are clear differences. Ravi has his own voice.
he is spitting
That's some top shelf jazz. Herbie kicks ass as usual , good to see randy brecker. So much talent all around.
Classic tune and what a great band. Herbie Hancock sounding better than even at 82...Wow.
Never has my jaw spent so much time on the floor.
Wow Zakkir and Herbie !!! Both are heavy inspiration for me in 2 seperate realms but in this video they are together! I love it

I bought this album when I was 17 based purely on its cover, one of the wisest moves I’ve ever made. A truly, truly great musician. 20 out of 10
I was introduced to this awesome song by D'angelo on one of his recorded shows during the Voodoo tour . I have been a fan of the song every since.
