I'm a college student made the same spark gap Tesla coil in my 3rd sem. Even though it seems like a simple circuit it's difficult to attain that perfect resonance because of the capacitance value of the toroid on the secondary side can vary significantly due to the surrounding environment. In my project, I used a 230V AC to 24V AC step down transformer (120 W) which it's output is rectified to 24V DC and given to ZVS circuit (It produce high frequency AC using the same LC oscillation with some high current MOSFETs on the output to handle 500W max). It's output is around 30k Hz square wave AC which is again given to another transformer (here I used a high frequency flyback step up transformer) to generate 50,000V AC and rectified to 50KV DC. Then this high voltage is connected to primary side of the Tesla coil and the secondary produced about 320,000V at very high frequency AC (at constant power as the voltage increases, current decreases) and less than 1 milliAmp of current. The primary coil of a Tesla coil has some tappings to change the no of turns which results in change in its inductance and coil parasitic capacitance value so the final LC oscillation frequency is changed in primary side. These tappings are used to match the resonance frequency of primary with the resonance frequency of secondary. If they matched correctly, both the coils will resonate together as much as they can at maximum amplitude and maximum energy is transferred to secondary. Here as we use air core in the Tesla coil the magnetic flux density or coupling coefficient is extremely low between the primary and secondary. So the total efficiency drops insanely. I used another Tesla coil as a receiver (NOTE: both the Tesla coils are supposed to work in the same resonance frequency and they are grounded independently) to get the power wirelessly at 3 feet distance and I got between 1 to 1.5 Watt BUT I WAS SUPPLYING 120 WATT FOR TRANSMITTER TESLA COIL!!!... This is where the Tesla coil fails!!.😔😔😔😔 I like your contents anna!!.. ❤️
Hi, I would say it is a successful one. We can not expect 120W from receiver. bcz we radiating energy for small village kind , we can not expect all energy to be received in single home itself. assuming omni-direction-360* radiating nature. 120/360= 0.34W per degree, we can assume ur receiver occupied 10* 3W it supposed to generate , bcz of losses it might have generated 1.5W
