Really great tutorial. It hadn't occurred to me to setup the director needles using the reference altitude. You just have to make sure the altitude source (HOJD CI SI) switch is set to RHM to use the radar altitude, otherwise it will use barometric (LD). RHM is default unless you exceed a certain altitude, then it automatically moves the switch to LD, so it's important to check.
In the December 2022 patch, Heatblur adjusted the radar antenna elevation in Terrain Avoidance mode so it is now level with the horizon. It used to be slightly down, so you would get ground returns from terrain in front and below you that is not in your flight path. The new elevation setting provides a much more distinct contrast between terrain and clear air *at your altitude*. Therefore, you should not get a big return from that city area at the end of the video anymore, and when flying through a canyon it should be much easier to spot the walls and the flyable "channel" on radar.
One other thing. The radar range setting has no effect when using the B-scope (A2) in Terrain Avoidance Mode, it's always 10 km. In A1 mode with Terrain Avoidance mode the range functions normally.

Thank you for taking the time to make this informative and entertaining Viggen terrain avoidance RADAR tutorial video for us.

I'm pleased you enjoyed it. It was always gonna be a niche kinda a tutorial, most people don't fly the Viggen, and many of the once unique features of the viggen, have now been added into much more popular modules (ie the sea radar / harpoon style missile). So aside from its little engine reverser party trick, as well as the only module that can knife edge all day long, since the winter update has properly fixed the ground avoidance radar, it now has a interesting, all-be-it limited role to play again. I can see various single players missions made specifically around this feature

    Wow, great work.
My hint: there is a Radar scope red filter for night flying (controlled left to the scope) - bright green screen blinds during the night.

Glad you liked it! The Viggen was the first module to have the radar work beyond AA mode - and before ED added the F18 which kinda did it all, hunting ships and launching (harpoon type) missiles was Viggen stuff. There was a bunch of updates over the years that saw the Viggen terrain avoidance radar made almost useless - but now its fully working best I've seen it, and what's more, it doesn't crash the game every 5 mins

Why would you use radar terrain avoidance in B-scope mode (the tight and small radar picture) instead of the A-scope (big and wide)? A2 on the radar instead of A3. Is radar terrain avoidance only possible in B-scope?

It would seem obvious right... I thought this too, and flying with it on A1 during the day / seeing the ground, it seems like it will be obvious, but fly at night, it's somehow far less intuitive than one might expect. I don't really know the ins and outs of it, but having tried both modes, the longer flight through various turns low in a valley (not just 30sec in a straight line) is very much more difficult using the other mode... Guessing now, it might be down to how the radar system interprets distance (to terrain) and relative height info, and how it presents this info to the pilot

You may find the A1 view is more usable since Heatblur changed the antenna elevation in the December 2022 patch. See my other comment above.
