That landing on a road just as wide as the landing gear, in complete rain and fog, while avoiding moutains, was the most terrifying thing i think i've seen in DCS or any other sim lol. Great video, and no one died, what a peaceful thing for a DCS video ahaha

Great video! Actually had the pleasure to sit in a real Viggen simulator at our former military airbase outside my town (F13) back in the late 80s. I went along on a demo flight in it. The straps around my shoulders squeezed tightly to simulate G forces. You can guess how excited I was as a teen back then :)
You know, when I flew the JF-17, I flew it like a Viggen lol. On the deck, with those GB-6SFW glide cluster bombs! Plus an SD-10 and LD-10 for self defense against anything I might come across. Very mean jet.

Please do more of these, there isn't enough Viggen content. Perhaps some TILS tutorials or a discussion on some of the CK37 modes... I recall there's a moving target mode or something which you can disable but am unsure how it really works.
Moving target used to be the default mode, but now it is not. So you need to enable it, and it’s really finicky so I rarely use it. More tutorials will come soon!

Only comment is to dial the brightness on the radar and play with the contrast to make things a little easier but otherwise, I actually learnt a few things I didn't already know!
Take off speed is around 280-300km/h. Don’t know if it shows as a horizontal line at the bottom of the HUD when taking off from road bases. Need to check 🙂. 550km/h is the speed the AFK holds with gear up and is also the speed they used in controlled airspace. Love to do a Viggen mission with ya 👌

Still a super sketchy place to land the Viggen. A very good hiding place though. Back when I was playing with TAW I asked if I could place a hidden roadbase for the upcoming mission. And that was more or less the best place I could find without getting too close to the enemy or out in the open.

My terrain textures are just about max'd out. My cloud quality is max'd out. I have anti-aliasing off in-game, but enabled in my graphics card driver. (this helps me spot objects at a distance.) You will have to do some fiddling to find settings that work with your setup, but setting your clouds to max quality has nearly no impact on performance, and that's probably what you're noticing the most here. I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)

@@Error-33 Well in that case, it was probably just the extreme weather that made it look good. Try setting clouds to one of the broken or overcast options, and changing the time of day to sunrise or sunset.
Please state, what are the settings for such weather condtitions? After introduction of the new cloud system I don't even have rain at all in DCS. Also fog and sand storm are very buggy too.

It does however use a part of the Military Aircraft Mod for the P-3, as well as the WW2 Assets Pack for the U-Boat that stood in for the Whiskey-class.

Not knowing anything about DCS, I'll just keep my comments about the real road bases of Sweden. They're nothing like what you took off from. They are random, but extremely straight stretches of road and pretty wide to boot. As a local you'd know.
Yeah unfortunately, the roads in this game don't make great runways. A lot of them are overgrown with trees or have powerlines, which would keep me from taking off. I needed a road that had neither trees nor powerlines, and was in the mountains so I could demonstrate the ground radar. That left me with basically this road as my only option. My search for a good road base continues :)
Nope! The Viggen was actually specifically designed to take off and land on roads! That's why it has a thrust reverser, and beefy landing gear. The Swedes were worried that the Soviets would attack airfields. So they designed their entire air combat doctrine around their road network. The Viggen, and the Gripen that followed both have short takeoff and landing capability to facilitate this kind of operation!

I intended this mission to replicate a submarine entering the Baltics via the North Sea, an area that Swedes, Norwegians, and Danes would be interested in defending. So a submarine in that position would be fair game. It’s pretty much the only time you’d see a Swedish plane flying west to get over water. And if you squint, with a healthy dose of imagination, Georgia map kind of looks like the southern tip of Sweden/Norway. As Norway rejected a union between Scandinavian forces in favor of a stronger NATO alliance, Sweden trying to flex their power in front of Norway is believable in my opinion. But I figured that explanation was outside the scope of the video. My main goal of course was to demonstrate that, by using a moving submarine and a moving aircraft, time on target works. I wanted a variety of planes, and an excuse to show off the P-3 Orion mod 😉 Glad you enjoyed!

Why don't you beat the GRs in a re-enactments with the "beached whale"? 😉
