  • Hey guys! Today, I'll be showing off a few niche features of SAAB's AJS-37 Viggen. Today's video covers the basics of Time on Target, the radar's Terrain Avoidance Mode, and setting up an instrument approach to a road. We'll be using these features to intercept a trespassing Whiskey-class submarine! Below are a few links that I found extremely helpful in flying the Viggen. Thanks for watching!

Great video! Actually had the pleasure to sit in a real Viggen simulator at our former military airbase outside my town (F13) back in the late 80s. I went along on a demo flight in it. The straps around my shoulders squeezed tightly to simulate G forces. You can guess how excited I was as a teen back then :)

Take off speed is around 280-300km/h. Don’t know if it shows as a horizontal line at the bottom of the HUD when taking off from road bases. Need to check 🙂. 550km/h is the speed the AFK holds with gear up and is also the speed they used in controlled airspace. Love to do a Viggen mission with ya 👌

My terrain textures are just about max'd out. My cloud quality is max'd out. I have anti-aliasing off in-game, but enabled in my graphics card driver. (this helps me spot objects at a distance.) You will have to do some fiddling to find settings that work with your setup, but setting your clouds to max quality has nearly no impact on performance, and that's probably what you're noticing the most here. Nope! The Viggen was actually specifically designed to take off and land on roads! That's why it has a thrust reverser, and beefy landing gear. The Swedes were worried that the Soviets would attack airfields. So they designed their entire air combat doctrine around their road network. The Viggen, and the Gripen that followed both have short takeoff and landing capability to facilitate this kind of operation!

Don't wanna sound negative, because I did enjoy the video, but if you gonna play with disbelief with a stand in map. Why would Norwegians fly in the Baltics?
Scandinavia is not a country you know. 😊

I intended this mission to replicate a submarine entering the Baltics via the North Sea, an area that Swedes, Norwegians, and Danes would be interested in defending. So a submarine in that position would be fair game. It’s pretty much the only time you’d see a Swedish plane flying west to get over water. And if you squint, with a healthy dose of imagination, Georgia map kind of looks like the southern tip of Sweden/Norway. As Norway rejected a union between Scandinavian forces in favor of a stronger NATO alliance, Sweden trying to flex their power in front of Norway is believable in my opinion. But I figured that explanation was outside the scope of the video.
My main goal of course was to demonstrate that, by using a moving submarine and a moving aircraft, time on target works. I wanted a variety of planes, and an excuse to show off the P-3 Orion mod 😉
      Glad you enjoyed!

@@desertsaker196 Thank you for answering. 😊 Okay, I kind of get it. But that's quite a stretch having a sub entering the Baltics from the North Sea, through Skagerak and Kattegat. Pretty tight. The Swedes couldn't really be trusted with their version of neutrality, so we didn't reject anything. We are a founding member of NATO.
On a more interesting note, I remember the sub hunting on the news in my childhood in the 80s. The Swedes would definitely drop bombs. But mostly from helicopters IIRC. Why don't you beat the GRs in a re-enactments with the "beached whale"? 😉

@@MAXsenna00 I'd rather avoid re-enacting anything specific, as I'm not thrilled at the prospect of defending the legitimacy of the re-enactment from hordes of critics😉
I'd rather demonstrate what an aircraft can do in a fun, realistic way. I want to encourage conversations about the aircraft, which may help everyone (myself included) learn more about the plane within the scope of DCS.

More Swedish: Röv means pussy in Sweden! :P
Btw: Road is väg not röäd! Or not even röåd or råäd.
Also your pronounciation of Viggen sounded more like ”vegan”!? I would say it rather with small pause in the middle: Vig’gen.
AlsoAlso: I wouldn’t say ”Mach point eight” until I go 1,8 mach, as I’m pretty sure you were going 0,8 mach?
More Swedish: Submarine is Val in Swedish!
