On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

The systems of the fighter Viggen are still classified, since a lot of it was put into the JAS 39 Gripen. DCS will probably not develop one without full access to its capabilities.
@@LL-vy5bj early JA37 or only the D variant? The JA37D was made in the 90s and had many systems common with gripen, software and hardware, but i doubt the original JA37 share many commonalities with gripen?
Thats why knowing your opponent is so important, That F-18 kill was a clear proof when you said you'd out climb him.

I spoke with Sven the other day, since we are both Swedish. He used to build furniture's for IKEA. But that was not a job with a future, he went over to SAAB as an engine tuner. His role is more like a flight engineer, where he tries to fix stuff on the fly, so to say. In stressful situations he tends to replace his allen key with his trusty pipe wrench. He is not that physical, and that is why he needs to take a brake after a long series of "calibrating" the engine. Sven is 32 years old, he lives in the suburbs of Stockholm with his girlfriend Inga and his dog Gripen.

And just my opinion, but of all the airplanes ever designed for combat, the Viggen has to be one of the most beautiful.

When you mentioned that the Viggen could outrun a bandit from the merge before it could get a missile off, I was curious about how powerful it's engine was given how often it seems to struggle when you're dogfighting with it. Then, in the last round, I saw your impersonate a rocket ship.
Especially down on the deck there’s not much that can keep up with the Viggen.
That's because the thing has a frickin IKEA compressor.
The problem is less with the engine itself and more with the intakes, IIRC. Above a certain angle of attack, the intakes can't pull in enough air and you get compressor stalls. Fly in a straight line where the engine can get plenty of air, and it apparently can haul ass.

@@vicroc4 This is not true the JA-37(Fighter/interceptor variant of the viggen) has the same intakes but an upgraded engine Volvo RM8B instead of Volvo RM8A. The RM8B engine is more powerful and does not have any compressor stalling problems.

It's honestly hard to describe how impressive the viggen is as a "psuedo-multi-role" fighter.
Iirc that’s why the interceptor variant was even made; the Viggen outperformed the Draken and just about anything the Swedish had, so it was bound to happen

A guy in Gävle, Sweden has two complete nose sections each of an AJS37 and a J35 in his living room. Fully functional and original Saab cockpits. The stick shaker on the Viggen, which warns against excessive AoA, is incredibly aggressive. Just wondering how long a pilot could put up with that punishment on his hand for. Obviously not something which can be modelled in DCS…

Round 4... the viggen killed a hornet. I had to watch that again. Genius move with getting him to chase you upstairs and play chicken with whoever stalls first, dies.

I have always liked the Viggen, And even the Drakken and Grippen. I never realized how capable they were as dogfighters more than just interceptors or ground attack aircraft! But mostly i'm a Tomcat person :)
The Gripen is probably my favorite. It may not be the absolute best at anything, but it's such a good rugged all around design. The HiLux of modern aircraft.

@@Lillspratt I'm not interested in jets and not everything has to be a jet. Piston engines are much more facinating and will be for a long time until ramjet engines become a thing on most aircraft.
I thought it was always a shame that we only have the AJ-37 in DCS. The JA-37 would be incredible to play, massively less prone to compressor stalls, internal 30mm KCA with much higher velocity than the Akan's, AMRAAM's and better Radar plus more reliable and powerful engine.
A two ship of JA-37s, flown well, would be a pretty tough challenge for anything.

Most fights would have to be like that climbing fight at the end - let the -104's superior climb rate stall the other guy out and then come back down guns blazing.

The Viggen did well in a classic interceptor configuration. Using the predictable patterns SR-71's used on missions from England to the Murmansk peninsula, Viggen pilots were able to technically get a "lock on" passing SR-71's. Doing so without using the predictable patterns (refuel points, flightpaths, et cetera) and actually being able to hit it with an AAM would have been a different story though.
They were doing it using data-link (second generation, Draken had the first), got all info speed, angle, ...
As they did not need own radar to find and navigation to the SR-71 got no advance warning...
It’s not a dogfight in the Viggen, it’s a controlled fall.
Okay, I'm sticking with my idea that we give Sven some extra wrenches to toss out the back, could get sucked into the intake of your opponent and take them down. [Sven gets credit for the kill in that case.]

You should do the US vs Russia thing again but with the rule that you can't choose the same jet twice so it's more interesting.
Do like 5 or 6 rounds so you can have different engagements.
Also make it bandit unknown so you have to choose your jet carefully.
This is a cool idea. If u bring a raptor the 1st round and they bring a mig-21 then you wont have anything to use against the felon. Could make for some cool matchups
I am once again asking for Battle of the Canards II: A 4-way fight between the JAS39 Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, and SU33 Flanker-D. May the best 'nard win.

Sven is an absolute mad lad. He only stops banging that engine when it either works correctly or he's looking for a bigger wrench to keep banging it back to life. He never quits on you. Never ejects. And when the dust settles - he doesn't blame you for losing the dogfight; he stands up, puts the fire he's on down, silently pats you on the back, gives you thumbs up, and starts walking towards the nearest viggen. Again, and again, and again.
And when you finally win... He's there. Probably banging the engine, in silence. But smiling. He always believed in you.
Always.
He's a much better backseater than Jester, that's for sure.

I feel like the Viggen always does better than one could possibly expect until the stalls. Imagine a Viggen without the stalls, would be interesting to see it's performance.
If i remember right the fighter version of the viggen was meant to pop out of a hole in the ground and yes i mean that literally take off in a short distance, intercept the issue, and then land again, its a freaking capaple boi. Plus it looks so good trashing on other fighters

As we can see in this video's demonstration a lot depends on the pilot's skill at piloting the aircraft properly and also the ability to read and know your enemy's weakness and work alongside that and GS made a spectacular demonstration in this video.
I don't know how many of you are aware of this, but the thumping sound being heard from the engine is actually the compressor/s stalling and the flame front from the combustion room shooting out through the intake. Obviously this is an extremely destructive process. LE: You don't need to lower the AOA much, just a bit , to allow the engine to breathe. The plane will perform better. Also, exceding the the maximum coefficient of lift will result in a worse turning plane, not better.

You can't dogfight without an engine. You kill your engine, you lose.

I find it both strange and amusing. I haven't even played DCS yet, and I've watched enough of your videos that I'm starting to be able to read what will happen next. For example, when its really starting to look like you might take a shot to the face, and sure enough.

The engine problem seems EXTREMELY exaggerated...
And i'm saying that as someone who has had friends who flew this plane. And the airforce here, pilots do a lot of very serious practise, enough so that a Viggen was lost in accidents occasionally, because it's considered worth it to train realistically. But while "not a great dogfighter plane" is common knowledge, they DO train for it and they absolutely did not have such common engine issues.
Out of the crashes due to training i can recall, i think only one or possibly two were due to engine problems, and that's like 2-5% of the total(40? IIRC) or something.
Have you ever seen the series "Dogfights", which details actual combat situations// This reminds me of that show.

@@Anarchy_420 That would be pretty cool. The Sabre would have at least one of the same problems it had with the MiG-15: a tough hide. The pilot would have to stay on target even longer to bring it down. Also like the MiG, the A-10 has a huge gun, so if he does manage to get one hit, you're dead.
Of course the Saber is a lot more maneuverable and the A-10 can't climb as hard as the MiG.
Now, consider the Saber going against the Skyhawk. Both are single engine non-afterburning planes, from times close enough for one to easily remember the other, maybe even close enough to meet. The Skyhawk would be like a MiG on steroids, able to climb like mad as long as it isn't carrying bombs. It will have a more powerful engine than the Saber, more powerful guns, and is probably even more nimble (and that's saying a lot!) This would be a real challenge for the Saber.

They're probably pretty damn close which would make it a close and good matchup however I mentioned The SU-25 bc it is not maneuverable like The A-10 and F-86, SU-25 would have to rely on speed and so it could be an offset matchup lol which I always find interesting to watch! There is actually a button you can press to restart the engine. It's a small black one next to the throttle
Would be nice if they could do the Viggen B, the actual dogfighter Viggen, but I know that's never gonna happen so we'll always be stuck with the A, the compressor stall variant with ole Sven in the back trying to keep it going with constant percussion maintenance.
I have not "flown" Since the original MCFS but watching your Video's is always a joy.
