I can appreciate how eddie points out that James doesn't have a moral high ground since he's also a fairly terrible person, though james wasnt as much of a kill crazy psycho.

At least James Sunderland owned up to what he did near the end of the game, unlike Eddie Dombrowski.

He's not a fairly terrible person, though. Why do people keep saying that? Just because he's complicated and experiences ambivalence doesn't mean that he's an awful excuse for a human being.
His killing of his wife can be argued as a mercy killing, she was a shadow of her former self and was slowly decaying away. What he did wasn't right and he had at least some selfish motives for it but the idea that this alone makes him fundamentally terrible is silly.
Yes I believe that it's true that he to some extent resented his sick wife, but it is also true that he loved her deeply. You can feel happy and sad at the same time, you can love and hate someone at the same time. People are complicated and walking contradictions. Every great piece of fiction establishes this fact.
A telling detail was that he kisses her before smothering her with a pillow. If he didn't love her at that point they wouldn't have added that.
He's not innocent(no one is), but he's anything but a terrible person. If he was so terrible he wouldn't have suffered through such immense guilt that it made him suicidal period.
The dude literally risks life and limb to save Angela from the abstract daddy and he tries to talk her out of committing suicide twice when I guarantee a disturbing percentage of people wouldn't have even stepped in the room when they saw her laying there with the knife.
He even tries to convince Eddie to get help. I actually can't think of a single instance in which he acts selfishly outside of his wife's death. He very clearly cares for people and is definitely more heroic than most.
The mere fact that he experiences such crushing guilt afterwards is proof of his good nature. And that's what draws him to Silent Hill; not his sins themselves but his guilt and yearning to be punished for them. He even says that this was Pyramid Head's sole purpose.
Good people can do bad things.

@@joeking6972 YES. YES. I like this comment. I agree with you 100 percent. People go with the popular narrative as if James is a complete piece of shit which he ISN'T. I look as his wife's death as a mercy killing as well. She was gonna die anyways and do he did it out of some resentment he did love her. I mean the man went through the effort of going to this town with monsters not caring for his well being to see her again and to be punished. Unlike eddie who ran away and enjoyed being a psychotic killer.

Out of all the people in Silent Hill 2, Eddie was someone I was desperately hoping wouldn't go off the deep end. However... like this video points out, the warning signs were always there from the moment you meet him. I wanted to believe Eddie when said he was innocent but he just kept reflecting blame until he eventually admitted it. Ultimately though, the message of Eddie's character just says a lot on how many real life equivalents there are to him. It's just so fucking sad...

Eddie's case is more important than often credited. This example shows Silent Hill doesn't "punish the guilty" as is often claimed. It's not a sapient deity dispensing judgement, it's a mindless supernatural force that projects and amplifies intense psychological and emotional states. Eddie isn't tormented by his visions like Angela and to an extent James are. He's initially afraid, but he eventually revels in the violence and slaughter.
It's evident he was a starting a career as a serial killer before finding Silent Hill, which allowed him to live out his violent fantasies to the fullest. He died not because of the town, but because he made the mistake of shooting at someone who could shoot back.

The characters of Silent Hill are often guilty of something horrible. But the theme is consistently the question of whether or not they can accept their respective truths. Unlike most supporting characters, Eddie didn't die denying the truth or accepting punishment either. He came to terms with his anger, played the game, and lost.

    • @paulman34340
      @paulman34340 20 днів тому

I always believed that too! It wasn't the Entity that is Silent Hill DISHING OUT the punishments. The Punishments are "self inflicted! Say what you will about Downpour, but the one thing I do like is the fact Murphy doesn't go unscaved for his bad decisions! His son's murderer still lives, even though the man is imprisoned, he goes out of his way to get locked up and makes ALOT of bad decisions and deals with "a devil" (you know who I'm talking about) just to get a chance at killing the man! And frankly nothing GOOD for him came out of it! It got WORSE, he put into a COMA a good man who did good by him to "pay back that deal with the devil mentioned" and essentially any bad end HE or the man's daughter face in Silent Hill is of their OWN making! She especially as she was doing the SAME things Murphy did, even ASSURING she was on the detail of the transport, most likely hoping for a chance to be alone with Murphy to kill him for what happened to her father and make it look like he was making a run for it. Which she DOES try to do MANY times during Downpour story. One of the Bad Ends was basically an INVERSE with HER in Murphy position as a Prisoner ready to be transported, as though saying in her OWN mind as she just like Murphy KNEW what they were doing was wrong, "Deserved to be in prison for their action" even though up to that point, she was seeing Murphy as the Boogieman showing
There are many endings and the game starts showing the results of your actions as James depending on factors you do, from combat, to movements, to even talking to Maria or going into rooms she's in a good many times! It's reflecting what you just described, I mean Pyramid head only "DIES" because James FINALLY realizes that PH is just his inner wish to be punished by SOMEONE for what he did, and once he comes to terms with that! PH has no reason to exist and kills himself. It can also be FORESHADOWING . When Eddie and Angela fail you can see how they lose themselves to their delusions completely, also foreshadowing James fate if he doesn't strive for the BETTER endings, As Killing himself (succumbing) to instead REPLACING Mary with Maria (suffering in delusion) don't come off as ANYTHING but following the two's mentioned faiths! Even SEEING THEM play out says otherwise! In the Suicide Ending, James isn't killed by the town, but instead HIMSELF, it also shows that despite what happened in the final PH fight, that can still come up to James not wanting to leave his END to "someone else" because PH existence can come up to him wanting someone to KILL HIM so he can "avoid punishing HIMSELF" by doing EXACTLY that! Just makes you remember Laura was with this guy (eddie) for a pretty good amount of time and it was LUCKY he was STILL at the point when he was with and AROUND her that he never targeted her as his FIRST victim. But the time Eddie's fight begins as you said, he succumbed and finally embraced being "The monster he let himself believe he always was" and his only true mistake, was making JAMES someone who can and WILL fight back, defend himself AND has the willingness to KILL (as he has already as you know, killed someone, the ENTIRE point of his story after all) his victim! A Usual fate for killers who "pick their target's and how they engage them POORLY" I can relate to Eddie to an EXTENT that I've dealt with MUCH of what he bring up and being made a Victim. I'm also pretty fat LOL! But I feel like that Old Cop at the end of "Falling Down" who called the Protagonist of that movie OUT on his rampage and tantrum by pointing out that "he's not UNIQUE" the whole "They lied to us" victimization applies to ALOT of people, including him! The point was him calling the Protagonist AND the audience that was likely CHEERING his rampage out for thinking ANY of that was okay or the right thing to DO (Reminder he almost got VIOLENT with a family in a mansion before he realized they were HOUSE SITTERS and "not the rich who own it" which many FORGET that part of what he was about to do BEFORE finding that out, the fact he felt they reminded him of himself and his ex wife and daughter made it VERY scare and hint at WHAT he likely would have DONE had the Old Cop NOT guessed CORRECTLY he was heading to his Ex Home) It's like LOOKING IN A MIRROR to what I would have become had I NOT made the choices and actions in my life! Kind of the point of the game. And why I don't feel bad KILLING Eddie! He had a chance and he BLEW IT succumbing to his worse nature.....and then ATTACKING me/James. We can all agree had we been in James shoes by the boss fight after ALL previous and the FINAL conversations with Eddie we'd have ALL "put him down" the moment he pointed that gun at us, FIRED....and MISSED! He only gets ONE SHOT, don't kill, and NO ONE is stupid to let him get off a SECOND EVER
Silent Hill can give two flying FUCKS if you learn ANYTHING or not! After all LAURA is able to move around just fine, because she has NOTHING like the others to really pull her IN! As far as she's concern and knows, she only knows EDDIE, And James are around. And safely goes around Eddie in his "calmer" moments! Hence why "he's not a DANGER to her then" (but a REAL time bomb that could go off at ANYTIME)

The interesting parallel I find between Eddie and James is that Eddie committed an act of violence out of emotional pain. The pain he carried made him violent. Initially like James he had this guilt/denial of what he did but unlike James, who has a dissociative amnesia, Eddie recognizes the reality of the violence of what he did. But rather than feeling guilt or shame, Eddie feels a justified rage in what he's done. The way he calls out James for also having blood on his hands, shows you Eddie recognizes a reality James doesnt. A fascinating character with an interesting perspective on the violence theyve committed.

The most frustrating thing is when you do work out and still end up obese. People like to think exercise has the biggest impact, but it really doesn't. The vast majority of what makes the difference is diet. And the main thing that makes a difference to diet, unlike the common assumption of having the information, is actually habit - which in turn is affected by mental health and personal situation. Only way to solve a weight problem is the combination of mental health and personal situation. Doesn't matter how many weights you lift - I love lifting weights and do it often. I know this all too well from current personal experience.
People tend to think they are being straightforward and unridiculous when they say something in a "just get on with it" tone. But they miss that this is their own version of comfort food, in a way. It feels good, and lets you imagine yourself as someone solving a problem. But what it actually is, is lazy. It's a stopping point, a quit. It's deciding that anything more complicated than that is too much bother to be worth attempting. Makes it a very ironic call to action.
Working out is great and will work, if you don't already have an eating disorder. It can help someone with an eating disorder stay more healthy than they otherwise would be, but will make surprisingly little difference by itself to their weight.

I think what Angela & Eddie signify in silent hill is the effect of guilt can have on a person. On one side you have Angela who was completely in her right to kill her father & brother since she actually left her home where she was being abused and her father forcibly dragged her back, so feeling like there was no other option for her killed them but completely consumed by that guilt and feeling though she deserved all of it and doesn’t deserve to even live. And on the other side you have Eddie, where yes he was bullied but not in the same situation where there were no other options, and at this point killing because he feels it’s justified for being bullied and is giddy to do it. Then there’s James that toes a very similar line both in his guilt and the actions that led up to it, he killed his wife, his wife had a terrible illness that disfigured her and made her feel like she wasn’t even a person anymore and even asked for death but also begged to not be alone. So James is a very definition of grey area and depending on the ending he either lets the guilt consume him or he acknowledges his wrong doings and moves on. I love this game.

The sad thing is that I thought Eddie had the most likely chance to recover. Yes, he killed a dog, but he was constantly being targeted by a bully who terrorized him well after graduating. We don't know if the dog was there for the ride, but it's still tragic.
James killed his wife and likely offed himself in Toluca. Angela's broken from an entire lifetime of abuse and sexual violence.
The entire thing is just soulcrushing.
Edit: Eddie's pizza was probably a manifestation from the town. He's clearly embarrassed about how he looks, so him indulging in a self destructive behavior by chomping down pizza while not running for Laura reinforces his insecurities on being useless while also making him more delusional later on.

Eddie was really weird in that Laura is the only one who outright unapologetically insults him yet he doesn't ever get defensive or react violently towards her(or even hold a grudge). Yet he killed a dog and twisted James' words around when James asked if he'd "gone nuts". I always wondered if Laura ran into him again when he went full blown Jack Nicholson would he have been so lenient with her insults or if there was some other reason he didn't take anything personal from her. As it stands, Laura and Eddie's relationship is one of the strangest elements of the game's story. The way she roasts him casually and he just takes it feels almost like a sibling rivalry.

I like the video, but I am fairly sure that Eddie didn't actually manage to kill any people, and the first time he genuinely attempted it was against James. "From now on" is a big clue there. But also, I think he was drawn there after killing the dog, because he was getting notions of escalating to killing people. The town attempts to show all three 'guilty' characters that they're wrong (tries to cure Eddie's escalation, Angela's self-blame, and James's denial) and very sadly, James is the only one it succeeds with. With Eddie, it keeps showing him dead bullies. Trying to say to him "see what it actually looks like, see the reality of what your edgy mind is imagining choosing to become". In a normal human way, he is naturally resistant to committing murder, but due to his trauma he has the seed of faulty logic to justify it. Each time it gets worse, he could go either way - be scared off the path, or double down in resolve. Unfortunately for him, he keeps doubling down. The town tries funnelling the denier toward him again and again to maybe get him to imagine another possible perspective, but unfortunately it just doesn't work (I think it knows not to have him and Angela cross paths - she would probably welcome death and thus accelerate Eddie's descent, bad for both of them).
I think he's being entirely honest when he says he didn't kill any of those bodies. Those are his tormenting apparitions just the same as Maria and PH are James's. Where he's being dishonest is when he imagines himself forward, as a more confident self-assured killer... he's not quite there yet, but getting perilously close. Then when he says "from now on" that's him having finally snapped. And "I'll kill you, James!" soon follows. He barely grazes a surprised James's shoulder, who didn't really even react quickly enough to properly dodge, at very close range. That's the other thing to think about. The guy at the table could've been sitting down and in no position to defend himself, but all the others were out in the open and surely if he'd killed them he'd have better skill with a firearm at this point than that. It's because this is the first time he actually attempted it, rather than those other times when he only went so far as daring to imagine doing it, and taking pleasure from the thought.
He's still completely nuts, regardless. Murdering a dog's very far from nothing. Shooting a guy in the kneecaps is also very far from nothing. He was quite an unlikely turnaround from the getgo. But he wasn't quite a lost cause yet, not until the meat room fight. You could still be absolutely right about him seeing all those victims as bags of meat to be processed. It's just he was a bit too hesitant to actually do it until this point.
None of this is verified information in the games (aside from the "from now on" line which, you could interpret as just a figure of speech). It's just what makes sense in my mind. But it does make sense, right? If I'm right then it's quite ironic. Eddie, the most at-first-glance violent, wouldn't have killed anyone. James, the one in the middle, would've killed one person. And Angela, looking for her entire family in a graveyard when you meet her ("I thought my father and brother were here too"), but being the most apparently gentle of the three otherwise, someone you would assume much more prone to self-harm than harming anyone else... most likely killed three, and as she disappears into the flames she always sees, may yet make it four by taking her own.

I knew eddie killed and dog and shot a guy in the leg, but did that really merit the punishment eddie got when he was in the town? The point of driving someone insane.
Silent hill portrays a personal hell for the guilty right? So the corpses could have been a figment of ones past, and if thats the case then Eddie was more pathetically tragic than evil.

I feel like i can sympathize with eddie cuz i was also bullied by family members and schoolmates and alot of people really. U kinda reach a point where u feel people staring and judging u and u feel disgusted that u look this way and ashamed to exist. For most my childhood and teenage hood i didn’t love myself or take care of me i also never got out of the house to meet other people and only bought pjs and never something nice. I wasn’t ugly infact i had really beautiful features but no one would comment on them cuz well they were beautiful. I always felt the gaze of people outside and it hurt to know that people were disgusted of me, at least thats how i saw it. It doesn’t have to be true it happened way too many times that it’s engraved in ur brain that thats how people see u even if in reality they didn’t care. Thats why i feel bad for him because he knows people notice one thing only about him and thats his weight/looks. It’s unfortunately true.
When u think about it everyone is a ticking bomb. If u treat someone bad enough they will break.

Eddie was a victm of the human nature, EVERYTHING in our lifes will be determined by two things: Genes and luck.
Genes is your starting point, your jawline your face your height, everything that people will look, and 89% of people only see what they look, most of us cannot look any further.
Luck was then his last hope, he could be born rich, he could maybe had a somewhat functional family wich CLEARLY was not the case, but that also did not went well for him.
As such, he was forced to live a life full of pain and judment, no one stand a single finger to help him or to at least be whit him, people dont give a f* ucking shit cause we are animal, vicious cruesome animals, you can live your life in hell by the act of other, but as soon as YOU do the same sudenly the world crashes.
"Dirty. Disgusting. He didn’t mind that girls wouldn’t give him the time of day. Fat. Stupid. Scum. It was the constant bullying that he couldn’t stand. Especially him…that bastard from school. All through high school he got his kicks by torturing me any chance he got. Even after graduation, he still wouldn’t leave me alone. So I…"
    - Eddie in the official novel.
Now thats not to say that Eddie is a saint or that it was fair for him to kill a dog and (possibly) the Chad who bullied him, he could use that pain he felt since the beggining, and go to a gym, he would gain an aspiration, he would improve himself, he would no longer eat whatever he feels like eating and just as much as he want, he would not scape reality trough medication, drugs, food or whatever, he had a functional body and could´ve been much more productive whit his time, but that was not his CHOICE.
Having said that, my previous point still stands even so, he was NOT the one who beggan his insanity, it was not silent hill who killed him it was not James, it certainly was not himself, the people he knew maybe even loved, they killed him, just like the mama that Angela loved killed her by letting her husband rape her, just like the man Mary loved killed her by also loving her Eddy is no diferent, but then we look at ourself and think: Well then, but who is to say that the people who killed Eddy also where not acting like that due to their own hells? Projection, violence, and mockery are not signals of a mentally health individual, it all comes down to our very nature, we are corruption, we are looks, we are selfish we are guilty and not guilty and what is Silent Hill? Thats what i think, Silent Hill has only ONE power, it can see further than our looks, and thats the only thing it needs, to reveal to us just how ugly and discusting piece of shit, we really are.
"What a shitty life his was. All he ever wanted was to eat something delicious, or watch something funny on TV. That’s all. But no one would ever just leave him alone."
    - Novel description.
The world already treat you like a monster regardless, so... Why not act like one? I like to think that this is basically Eddy mentality.

It's like, sure, we live in a materialistic, instagram culture, etc. But that's not new, and it is only really on the surface anyway- people stuck in the shallows become convinced that being beautiful is all that matters and that it will determine one's life; meanwhile, anybody who you would ACTUALLY want to hang out with, or date, has gone deeper than that layer of culture, virtually by definition.

I find it interesting how Eddie doesn't seem scared of Silent Hill or the monsters. Of course, this is obviously due to the fact that he has lost it and reason and common sense don't matter to him during the game's events. Otherwise, a more stable and logical person would've been focused on trying to survive and escape Silent Hill.

Something always bugging me about one dialog. The statement 'forget you!' At first I think it's a translation problem, and the actor just went with it. But I never heard any English-speaker use that, but also I never heard them annoyed by that. Is 'forget you' an outdated slang or something? English is not my first language, so I am confused with the weirdness of statement and the nonchalant-ness of English speaker in hearing that.
