      LOL. I am happy to report that it is doing well. As I mentioned in a some of my videos just about all it’s leaves were stripped off following some high winds in our area. It has since developed a good amount of leaves and has even produced some fruit. Thank you for visiting!!!

    Great find for Costco. I too am in zone 10a SoCal. I saw Rogers Gardens had these lime 10 years ago. I wish i had bought one because i haven’t found any since then.

      It was a great find. I was a bit concerned buying a tree from Costco, but it’s done well. You might try and see if a local nursery in your area can order one for you. Best of luck and thank you for watching!

      @@jehan9283 most trees especially citrus need oxygen to their root flair!!! you can also plant them a bit elevated sot the flair is exposed to air

      That is a good mix, especially for a container grown tree. I use a similar mix, but I also add in some organic soil and cactus soil mix. I also line the bottom of the container with lava rock. My mix resulted in a PH at about 6.0 and my tree is doing great. Pumice absorbs moisture so it will help keep excess moisture off the root ball and trunk. It also helps with aeration so that the mycorrhiza and beneficial bacteria can breathe better and thrive. I also like to use woodchips. By placing pumice around the base it keeps the woodchips away from the root ball and trunk as they break down, which helps reduce possibly of damage from insects/disease. Hope this helps and best of luck with your trees.

      I can imagine gardening in the UAE with all that heat might be a bit challenging. Another alternative to pumice is volcanic rock. I’ve been using it lately because I haven’t been able to find a good source for pumice. I’ve used it on several trees and all are doing well.

    Nice video, the tree looks great.. how do you find using the grow bags?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  3 роки тому +1

      I prefer grow bags or wooden containers as opposed to the traditional round plastic/ceramic containers. I have not had a single tree become root bound with the grow bags. I’ve had several with plastic, but the grow bags do a good job of keeping the roots healthy. The only issue is that if you are using grow bags, be sure to keep them off the soil. The roots will penetrate the fabric on the bottom (not a problem on the sides). I usually put mine on the patio or if on top of soil bed I will place a piece of board or plastic to keep any roots from working their way into the bottom soil.

    Is November the normal time of the year for finger lime to bloom? Did you harvest the fruits? I just got one tree in North Florida and can’t wait for it to bloom

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  4 роки тому

      In my zone it started to develop flower buds in early November, but none of the flowers set any fruit. It put out a second set of buds in late February. Flowers off the 2nd set of buds were the ones that set fruit. I haven’t harvested the fruit, but I will be doing that soon. I’ll be sure to upload a video when I harvest them. Good luck with yours!

    can this tree survive the intense summer heat of zone 10a/b?? I don't know why, but I feel the peak heat of 110 degree will burn the plant

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  3 роки тому

      A mature tree should do well in your growing zone. I’ve never had any issues with mine during the summer heat, but we don’t get temps as high as you do in your area (90’s). If you are growing it in a container you will likely have to move it to a shaded area. BTW, although they do best in full sun, they will do well in partial shade. If it’s planted in the ground you may need to use a shade cloth for sun protection until established. Also, whitewashing the trunk of the tree should provide some protection from the sun. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.

    How big are your fruits now on your plant? I have an Australian Finger Lime as well that I has purchased from Four Winds Growers that has had so many flowers and has set fruit but the fruit doesn't seem to be growing.

      Some of the finger limes are about 2 inches in length. They are still not ready for picking. I was also worried about the growth on mine. After flowering it seemed as if it took a long time for the fruit to grow. It flowered in late March and started to set fruit in mid April. It’s now late June and they are still not ready, but they are growing and doing well. I’ll be sure to post a video when I start to harvest. Thanks for watching.

    I’ve heard that in Australia they are grown under shade trees. Should that be considered? What about feeding finger-limes in Zone 10? What and when for maximum fruit size and flavor?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  4 роки тому +1

      One of the advantages of growing in a container is that you can move it around your yard and monitor its progress in order to find the best planting area. I’ve moved mine around different locations in my yard that get various amounts of sunlight. It’s done well in partial shade, but It’s done best for me getting at least 6 + hrs of direct sunlight. As for feeding, I use an organic citrus fertilizer 3 times a year (pre-bloom, after bloom and then again in June). If you haven’t already, please take a look at my video titled “June 2020 update tour of previously posted videos” I’ll be posting another video on this tree soon as I harvest the fruit. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.

    Are Australian finger limes ideal for pie making, just like Key limes?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  4 роки тому

      I’m not sure. I’ve never tried that. The taste is slightly less tart than a regular lime. If you like the key limes, I’m guessing you would like these as well. I’ve been using them with beverages. I’m waiting for my Meyer lemons to ripen so I can try them with some lemonade.

    when you state the soil you use first off, what do you mean when you say PART?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  3 роки тому

      When I use the term Parts, I am referring to the instrument I am using for measurement. It doesn’t matter what size it is as long as you use the same measuring instrument for all of the amendments you are adding, you will get the same ratio. On this particular transplant I believe I was using a 2 quart container. Hope this helps.

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard

      @@SS-ry5yv No real issues with the grow bags. The one’s in the video are going on 3 yrs. I have a few others that are going on 4 yrs and no issues so far. About the only problem you might encounter is if you place them on the ground (roots will grow through fabric and into the ground). I place most mine on the patio so no problem there. Any others that are on the ground I’ll place a piece of plastic under them or place them on top of a thick layer of wood chips in order to keep the roots from going into the ground.

      The fruit set from its 1st bloom is still on the tree, however; it does not appear to be developing well. The fruit very small, not much bigger than a grain of rice. I’m not sure if they are going to hold on and reach maturity. The good thing is that it recently started to flower again. I’m hoping this 2nd bloom will produce a better crop. I intend to post a follow-up video soon as the 2nd bloom begins to start setting fruit, which should be in a few weeks. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for watching.
