I am about to re-pot (for the first time) my little lemon tree and two blood orange trees I grew from seed. I have watched this video a few times and it has great information. I am now ready to re-pot. Thank you, Laura, for your help with citrus and all the other plants, and trees, you love so much. Please send good healthy vibes to my little trees.

You can do either or, depending on how warm your house is, how much sun you get and it is always good for them to go outside in the summer, but you don't have to, if you have good lighting and warmth (especially with citrus trees). Really depends on where you live too.

One more thing: The fruit will get quite large and stay very dark green. You must be patient! It takes months for the green fruit to turn yellow! I usually harvest mine just as cold weather is beginning to come- late October, early November. The skins of the lemon will turn bright yellow and soften a bit. Give a little tug and it should release from the tree. Enjoy! Nothing like a Meyer Lemon.

Love your videos. Here goes nothing. Just picked up a Meyer lemon tree. A house warming gift. I’m new to the Bay Area so the climate is new to me. It’s been extremely dry here. I think it has rained a handful of times within a year. However, I do get fog and more wind than I expected. The plan is to have it in a pot until my landscaping is completed. Once done I will plant it in the ground. It will be at least a year wait. I have almost everything I need and hopefully I won’t kill it beforehand.
This is super helpful! I want to buy a lemon tree for my apartment to keep in the balcony but I was wondering about pruning, mites, and sufficient sun exposure. This clarified a lot.
Thanks you for this video very helpful. I have a Meyer lemon tree also. I learned a lot more on the care. Watch your videos all the time. Love 💐 like you and plants. I have to stop myself from going anywhere that has plants, because I end up bringing home more plants.

Yes!!!! You guys are in tune with our, "the viewers" needs! Thank you! Great information. My Meyer lemon tree is behaving as you described, so now I know what to do! And... I am going to pot my next citrus trees!!
Oh my word! This makes me so happy. I've been devouring "all" the potted citrus"videos and web pages I can get my hands on lately... and then my favourite garden vlogger comes out with a video days later! :-D :-D My many poor potted citrus have had a hard life 6 years of moving around rental houses waiting for me to move into one of my own in order to plant them. This year they've got lots of deficiencies, because I've been too busy renovating and having surgeries - and this past Summer (it is Winter now) and all my fruit trees were hit with so many the boring and sap sucking bugs... possums and wallabies too. :-( They're very unhappy plants. Anyway, my story aside: YAY! a Garden Answer video! :-D :-D Thank you guys!
blarghies Greetings from California - having “problems with wallabies” caught my eye as one of the cutest phrases ever, but then, I am not familiar with what actual damage they may do! Wishing you and your citrus trees the very best.
@@OxfordComma47 hehehe! They are wonderful creatures. I absolutely love having macropods on my property. :) wallabies, padamelons, (bettongs), potoroos and possums (different to yours) are like deer, where I live. They will eat every plant they can get their tiny grabby hands on. I'm trying in vein to grow two purple flowering hebes as lollipops and a hedge of variegated pittosporum as a hedge, but they keep getting stripped... The bark is scraped off or stripped, branches broken or rendered useless causingdie back, and the leaves are all gone. :( I used to think olive trees, lavenders and citrus were not eaten by possums (cute little banes of my existence), but they have been eating everything. Sighhhh. People in my area shoot or run over native and escaped animals (Australians aren't great people as a whole) and I refuse to harm them no matter what. I just wish there was something I could spray on the plants that would work! I have electronic animal repellers (emit sounds and leaving lights that they don't like) but they don't seem to help. And brush tail possums will climb over any any fences or through tiny gaps like Toombs from the X Files and wallabies will bound over our cattle fencing. Can't keep them out. 😭😂 Making things grow here is like banging your head on a brick wall. Add to that my destructive geese, ducks, chooks and goat and I realise it is a labour of love with a large helping of frustration and pushing a bike up a steep hill. 😂 :) I ❤️animals and plants.
blarghies Absolutely fascinating. I could spend a month looking all those animals up! Thanks for telling me we have different possums, too, I never would have pictured deer. All the best to you.
@@blarghies Hi there - loved your comment!! I’m not an Aussie but I’ve vacationed there and have friends there!! They built a ‘sun porch’ on the north side of their house - floor to ceiling windows, half of them open, glass ceiling/roof. Or maybe high impact plastic. They put their garden in there. It’s like a lean-to added to the side of the existing room. Now the windows on that side of the house open into the sunroom - concrete unfinished floor. It’s like putting windows around a side porch. Anyway - lush garden they have!! They have lemon trees and those Aussie limes. Beautiful! And bearing fruit. One is getting so big they’re going to have to do something with it - prune or move somewhere else. And shelving covered with veggies in pots and wooden beds. Maybe you could do that at your place? Good luck with the animals!
I've been growing a mandarin orange tree for several years and this is the first year that I'll be able to harvest ripe fruit. At my previous house the squirrels would start eating the oranges when they reached about 1" in diameter.

According to my books, citrus don't really like being pruned. The books say only to remove the essential 3Ds (dead, diseased & dying branches) & any branch that starts to grow below the graft. Shame I didn't read before I cut. lol.
So glad I found you! Love your honesty...."it's a pain".....!! Just pulled my Myer Lemon inside. I read you should remove fruit in the first couple of years. My little guy is covered in them and I want them!!
Thanks! I have 2 lemon trees in pots i grew from seed here in s. Michigan that go in and out. Last year a tree frog came in with them so no bug problems
Great video! Two things I've found out in my years of growing them: In some parts of the country, it's hard to find citrus fertilizer. If you use another fertilizer, be sure to add some blood meal as well. Citrus have very high nitrogen requirements compared to other fruit trees. Also, don't be surprised if some of your young fruits fall off. Citrus are self-thinning, and will only keep the amount of fruit it can support.
Essa Boselin thanks for the info! My Key lime tree keeps losing it’s young fruits but it is also in the same pot as a Meyer lemon tree (purchased them that way this spring from a big box store). I’m thinking I should separate them into their own pot.
I love citrus trees, I'm always considering planting one in a container (unfortunately I don't have a garden), but I'm a bit scared, I think they are a bit finicky... thankfully it's a native mediterranean plant, we export lemons, too, so I could grow it outdoors, with maybe some coverage on the few cold days we get, so I might attempt it some day. Thank you once again for the tips, have a great day!! 😊

Fabulous. I am ready to grow mine in a pot now. Exited!
🤣😂🥰
I use smartpots/fabric pots for all my plants. My Lemon tree loves it! Plus it's great because of the way roots grow. I put my avocado trees and aloes in those smartpots too. All seem to love them
An year later haha how big are the pots u use ?
@@Ivan-od7bp They are awesome, thanks for asking. Alll of the plants/trees do better in them. No root-bound issues and you can't overwater because it all runs out of the pot. Highly recommend. If you try them, let me know in the thread.
Thank you - you just taught me “smartpots!” I see them now online, and I’ll check my local nursery.
What a piece! That must have cost a small fortune new. Beautiful work restoring it.
I'm in central Texas. I double pot.
Take a HUGE pot, place another inside. Put felt or dirt between the pots.
They grow very well in our dry, hot summers. And stay warmer in winter.
I'd recommend wearing rubber or nitrile gloves when working in soil. There's things in soil you really don't want in/on your skin
What do you use for the soil mix because double potting plastic pots might hold on to excess moisture?
Thank you Mrs.!
I too live in Oregon so this is great for me :) wish I would have found it before I repotted my lemon tree. The people at the nursery was not helpful! But it’s still blooming and starting to grow fruit which makes me happy.

YOU ARE PHENOMINAL. THANK YOU.
Would love to see what your lemon tree looks like now!! Great video. Thank you.
I love your videos! Packed with easy-to-understand information and properly sequenced, get to the point quickly without waffling, everything! Well done. I always enjoy them.

Thank you so much for this video! I have a 10 yr old blood orange & Meyer lemon in 20” pots and was curious as to whether or not I needed to put them in bigger pots. They seem happy and have produced well, so i didn’t really want to upset them. You’ve validated my choice to leave them alone and I’m appreciative for all the great info you gave today because I have 3 more oranges now to put in pots. 💚🍊🍋
Ah great trees and success you have. Pass it on to others.
I love how much you love your plants. As you talk about them, you seem to pet them and it's so sweet.
It's mostly about money today. Sad. 😮😐😇😩
I got addicted to your channel! Thanks for great tips.

Who else thinks that Laura should make a series of cooking videos as an addition to her gardening channel
where she would use all her fresh produce to make delicious food?!😋
🌱It would be great to see how Laura uses her fresh fruits and vegetables in her kitchen!🌱
🍋Your lemon tree is so beautiful, I wish I had one!🍋
🍋🍓🍏🍎🥕🥒I love your videos!🌿🍃💐🌷🌸🌺
Perfect timing as usual! I have a Meyer lemon and Key lime tree both in the same pot (FL zone 8b)...the Meyer is loaded with fruit but the key lime is struggling...it blooms then fruits but they fall off after several weeks. I’m thinking I should separate them into separate pots before I lose the key lime altogether. Super informative and inspirational as always! Thanks for all you do!! 💚🍋
Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! I can grow most plants well but I manage to kill off citrus. Now I have a little bit better of an idea of how to take care of them. I might expand and add a lime and orange tree next year 😁
Great video!
Very well done!
Looking forward to watching my lemon tree and lime tree grow thru the seasons!
I'm in zone 9, central FL, so the climate it perfect for citrus trees, thanks for all the helpful information Laura!
So jealous. If I lived in FL, I'd have a whole grove!
@@DianeCee0 Yes, that is the goal Diane! However, the downside is not many of my favorite plants can grow here and I'm not into the tropical style of garden, go figure, lol!

Thank you very much for such a detailed video, in this time of quarantine I've gotten into gardening and citrus trees are my number one choice. This helps me a looooooooooooot

Great tips. You make gardening look effortless.
Comprehensive, highly educational and to the point. Brilliant. Thanks

I just bought a Meiwa kumquat and wasn’t sure what kind of pot, but your tips helped me tremendously… thanks!
Oh my word! This makes me so happy. I've been devouring "all" the potted citrus"videos and web pages I can get my hands on lately... and then my favourite garden vlogger comes out with a video days later! :-D :-D
My many poor potted citrus have had a hard life 6 years of moving around rental houses waiting for me to move into one of my own in order to plant them.
@@OxfordComma47 You too :-D
Thank you Laura I just received a kumquat from my son. It's growing very well . My first fruit tree. So this video is just what I needed.
I've been growing a mandarin orange tree for several years and this is the first year that I'll be able to harvest ripe fruit. At my previous house the squirrels would start eating the oranges when they reached about 1" in diameter.
Little bassturds 😄
My citrus trees are the only edible items in my yard that the birds, squirrels and raccoons leave alone. Your past squirrels would drive me nuts.
Thanks for the VERY informative and helpful video. I'm all excited! Going shopping today for lemon trees!
Thank you! Very helpful! I have to move my lemon tree in full sun. Great info 👍 Laura and great video Aaron 👍🤗😘💜🥀

Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been trying to grow a lemon and lime inside for a year and they have produced. I’m struggling with pruning them so that they form into a tree shape. Please oh please do a video on pruning citrus!!!! 🙏
According to my books, citrus don't really like being pruned. The books say only to remove the essential 3Ds (dead, diseased & dying branches) & any branch that starts to grow below the graft. Shame I didn't read before I cut. lol.
How is your tree doing now? Any advice after a year has gone by?
So glad I found you! Love your honesty...."it's a pain".....!! Just pulled my Myer Lemon inside. I read you should remove fruit in the first couple of years. My little guy is covered in them and I want them!!
Thanks! I have 2 lemon trees in pots i grew from seed here in s. Michigan that go in and out. Last year a tree frog came in with them so no bug problems
How are they going?
Fantastic video! I have a handful of lemon seeds germinating right now. I’ll have to come back to this in a few years.
Aaron-We love your graphics
This is a full time job!!! No wonder I’m not growing any lemons yet!!!
Oh, I would definitely try to separate them. My Meyer lemon is much more vigorous than my lime - it's probably taking most of the nutrients.
Essa Boselin thanks so much. I’m going to try it.
I haven’t tried growing citrus but I would like to try. I will watch my garden center
Its like you could read my mind!!! I needed this video Laura, thank you so much!1

I have always wanted to try a citrus tree in a container. This was very helpful.
Very informative! Do you suggest pruning immediately after transferring a new plant to a larger pit?
I have a lime tree in a terracotta pot (for making cosmopolitan cocktails)😎 where I live the plant was getting sunburned so I had to move it to a place that had afternoon shade. When I transplanted it I made a pyramid out of the soil then opened up the roots and then draped the roots over the pyramid and then back filled it .this makes it really stable in the pot ..thanks for your vid... I've learnt some more🇦🇺
