- Growing limes in a pot is an effective way to cultivate these delicious citrus fruits. To grow a lime tree in a container successfully, there a few simple tips which can help. In this video I’ll show you how easy planting limes in pots or containers is, and some helpful methods to get started.
Using pots to grow limes (and many other citrus and fruit trees) also saves on space and makes it possible to cultivate your own mini orchard right on your terrace or balcony! Another advantage of using containers or pots in this way is it allows more control to grow them in environments that they would not normally tolerate, as you can bring them in when it's cold, or grow them in a conservatory or greenhouse.

I have a very nice lime tree from seed and is giving me lots of fruits year round. I just bought a ripe lime fruit in the market and planted it in a small plastic bottle then transfered it in three layers of car tires with soil.

Very helpful video! I just planted a grafted semi-dwarf thornless key lime into what might be a too small container (5-gal: 28cm Dia. X 30cm H nursery pot), after reading somewhere that they don’t like the shock of a too large container. But after watching this, I may move it to a 15-gal right away, while it’s still young (90cm tall). I’m in zone 10a Northern California.
The notion of the shock of too large a container seems to only spread around English speaking community. More pots and bags of growing medium to sell. It does seem to work because the container will lose most of its nutrients after much watering in the pot. Upsizing the container gradually gives the tree a chance to have new soil (more nutrients for the tree) for better growth. If anything, small pots cause root-bound problems. Imagine why is the tree grew faster in the ground? Why is it never an issue since it is bigger than any big pot you can get your hand on.

I'm trying to figure out why my potted lime tree that was giving out tons of limes for years is now dying after the pot broke and I planted it in ground. It dropped 95% of my tiny limes and tons of leaves.
I think I planted too low in our adobe dirt?

Is it possible to grow one of those dwarf lime trees in the west coast of Scotland? Pretty wet but a few good months as well
I live in a dry climate where its about 85-100F during the summer but during the winter months it can stay below freezing pretty consistently. Do you have any tips for the winter months?
I have 8 trees (or seedlings, all under 1 year old, whatever the term), that I got from Key limes bought from Walmart. Each one took about 1 month to sprout. I can’t wait to see if I get any fruit from any of them.
That is awesome! itll take a while for them to fruit, it will be a fun wait. unless you find a productive tree and graft on the the seed grown root stock. thats my plan for the avacardos and mango trees ive grown by seed. then theyl fruit much sooner

Well sometimes it's fun to grow things from seed, but when your wanting fruit pretty soonish then it's an awfully long wait...😅
What if i want that same lime tree but want to put it into the ground? And can you trim them so they dont get too big and into the neighbors property?
Then just dig it right in the ground instead of the pot. Put it somewhere it gets plenty of sunlight and good drainage. Just keep on top of it with a little trim here and there. Just remember the more we prune citrus the less fruit we get as they store all there food within the leafs and stems. So be mindful of that.

My search on growing limes at home brought me to your channel. Questions. How does it take to produce fruit; are there differences in key limes vs limes; can lime trees be grown in 4 season states?
"Grocery store limes, generally speaking, are Persian limes, which are larger and tarter than their Florida cousins. Key limes are smaller and contain more seeds than Persian limes, while Persian limes have a thick, bright green skin, and Key lime skin is thin and tends to be a little on the yellow side" straight from Google...🤣 yes you should be fine to grow in the states, just protect from frost if you are in a area that is prone to it.

hi Clifton, at the moment I do not have any seeds available. maybe once I had my first fruits from the tree I might have some to make available on my website im. currently building. We have Kako fruit here, sounds interesting. Will citrus graft to that though? I would assume it will not 🤔

I have such a hard time with my lime tree. The leaves keep shriveling and falling. The water seems fine on it. I’m wondering if I need to add some amendments or what you recommend for fertilizing routines?
how is your watering routine? do you water alot often or wait for the soil to partly dry then give it a good drink? It could be overwatering. you can buy good organic fertiliser made for cirrus i highly recommed. Im using goat poop manure and a sprinkle of wood Ash on the surface every other moth as citrus suffer from mineral deficiencys which could also be a cause. what kind of place do you have the tree? how much sun does it receive, is it exposed to high winds and so on?
@@GreenthumbsGarden I have it in a container inside under a grow light since I live in the cold half the year. I read that you should let it dry between watering so that’s what I do, a deep watering a couple times a week. I used the citrus tone fertilizer when I transplanted it to a bigger pot recently. Light 12 hr on 12 off. Soil is part espoma organic potting soil, part volcanic rock, compost, and mulch. Maybe the transplanting caused it stress? But it has good drainage. I don’t have a watering schedule I just check it every day to see if it’s dry. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. I have several other types of trees that are doing great but I can’t grow citrus for some reason. I tried lemon last year and got it to the flowering stage then it died. I feel like there’s a trick to it I’m just not getting. ❤️
@@audiotinker a deep water a couple of times a week under grow lights might be too much if its not drying enough. funny thing I did just the same thing with my cherry seedlings... i got them under growlights and they don't dry as fast as they want uld outside exposed to wind and so on. leafs shrivelled and fell off and I think I've lost two plants from it. I would cut the water down and before watering stick your finger in to the soil and see if it is still moist a couple of inches down. or get one of those testers that tell you if it's dry or wet. I would only water if it's dry a few inches down in the soil. I cant think what else. citrus should not be too hard. I read they don't like to be kept always moist. maybe you not letting it dry as much as you think. not that I want to assume anything. also, when you do water deeply, do you let the excess water drain away? we never want them sitting in water. If i can ask also, what zone you live in as citrus will do well outside, just bring them in in winter if it's getting very cold, cold winds and such.
You could use egg shells as a fertilizer also.
My lime leafs are greenish yellow, has blossoms, but the small buds of fruit fall off, suggestions?
It happens, fruit drop is normal especially in younger trees, they more they get established the more fruit it will bear. Yellow leaf's, could be a sign of missing trace elements, citrus often suffer from, get a feed with iron, magnesium and trace elements, also it could be a lack of nitrogen.
Will the one 2” hole in a clay pot work or should I drill more holes?
I think so, but 2" sounds big, make sure to put some gauze over it so your earth don't fall out.

you can but you will need to take steps to protect it from cold winters, mulching the base heavly will help insulate the roots. also a grafted lime on to a citrus root stock more hardy to colder temps will help. Place the tree in a location protected from cold winds, maybe flanked by a stone wall that will retain some heat during the night and shelter it from cold weather.
My only question is what kind of accent is that? Part of England?
the only question? 😅 its a Yorkshire accent. Lived in Spain many years so the accent is not so strong.

Help! I inherited some of my mom's plants and the lime tree is one of them. The bark of the lime tree is peeling off and no new leaves are growing. Is it sick or dormant? It's 3 yrs old and it's only 2 feet tall. I live in a tropical country. I kind of forgot to move it in the shade last rainy season during October and November. What can I do?
sounds like root rot, try digging away a little of the soil and see the roots. Too much water and not enough drainage will cause this. Where is the bark peeling off? at the base or higher up? for now stop watering the plant and allow it to dry in-between watering. Don't mulch the soil around. Will be difficult for the tree to recover 😬

Oh, it sounds like Phytophthora root rot from what I read. In time the tree will decline, drop leaf's and de. Hopefully it is in the early stages and it can recover.

HELP HELP! I have a lime tree this year have some fruits but never grow bigher.. they about 1 to 2 centemeter.. i have them like yours in a big black pot inside my greenhouse here in Texas..
they just fall off? this is fruit drop, there are many reasons for it, a young tree, under stress, un well, a heat wave. A tree will only hold the fruit it can sustain and grow while remaining healthy. Check your soil PH, make sure the soil has good drainage.

Hey, just got a key lime tree and it came in a pot and said it could be grown in this pot but it's much smaller than the one you use, will this work or no? If it does work, will it produce any limes? Can I just keep it pruned like you would a bonsai tree? I heard you could bonsai any tree, but would it produce tiny limes then or none at all? I have v little space in my apartment so I'm hoping it will work in this smaller pot, but please let me know if you know it won't! Great video btw, you got some sexxxy soil 🤤
You should be ok, I just used the biggest pot I can. They say you want a minimum of 15 gallons or 57 liters for key limes. You can check your pot size easily on my website greenthumbsgarden.net/calculate-your-flower-pot/ just input your measurements and it will give you the volume. you can bonsai a tree but it takes a lot of skill and knowledge knowing how to trim the roots. I think you will be fine with a smaller pot and get some nice fruit!
