Important side note: While the Gita can be treated as an intro to Advaitha philosophy, the context of the Gita i.e the Mahabharata is very important to understand why Krishna was almost pro-war at this point. Krishna (and the Pandavas plus Draupadi ) were consistently anti-war for much of the epic as they were pushed closer and closer to total annihilation. Without the Mahabharata, the Gita is incomplete. The later volumes post war are a sobering reminder of the cost of war, which people often neglect to understand. Plus, it’s important to view Hinduism from a pre-Abrahamic lens where Gods are not absolute and flawless and belief in supreme power is not a requirement. It’s a tradition based in philosophy rather than belief.

@@pyrrhusofepirus8491 I'm pretty sure the "asshole" is Ganesha's father, Lord Shiva and the "consort or wife" is Ganesha's mother, Goddess Parvati. Stop spewing misinformation if you don't know. Parvati, longing for a child, creates Ganesha out of clay one day when Shiva is away from their home in the Kailasha Mountain. Ganesha comes out to be the perfect child and Parvati loves him to no end for the brief part of the day they spend together. Later noon, Parvati, who wants to bathe in peace, asks her new son to stand guard in front of their home to stop anybody from entering. This is exactly when Shiva decides to return and not knowing his father, Ganesha doesn't allow him to enter. Shiva, being the god of wrath and annihilation, is aggravated by this child's challenge. In a fit of rage, he beheads Ganesha. Parvati, hearing the commotion, comes out to see her husband just kill her only son and threatens to curse Shiva unless he returns her son to her. Shiva sends for his minions to look for a replacement head at the earliest before sunset to fix Ganesha but forgets to mention to them to find a fitting neck only from a human. And so they return with a baby elephant's head that fits his neck exactly. Shiva, not seeing any other way to find a neck before dusk, just reattaches the elephant head to Ganesha's body and brings the latter back from dead. And that is how Ganesha got an elephant's head.
@@pyrrhusofepirus8491 The version that I read was a long time ago so I dont remember it entirely not sure if its any closer to the accurate versions, although as someone said above, there are many contradictory sources. It goes like this: Ganesha's mother went to the bathhouse, instructing him to not allow anyone in. Shortly afterwards, other deities started arriving, demanding to meet her, to which he refused. Whether from not knowing Ganesha or just being arrogant, their arguments escalated into a full blown fight. Soon, more Gods joined in against him, using even their superior weapons. Ganesha fought valiantly, but then either was overwhelmed or got taken by an underhanded tactics, and got decapitated. By then his mother came out from her bath, shocked and heartbroken to find his sons fate. Realizing that boy was right and not wanting to get into her bad side, the other deities decided to find the first thing that can replace his head. So they searched, found an elephant, took its head, and brought Ganesha back to life with the elephant head attached to him. Like I said, not sure if its one of the popular versions, but definitely feels like something that could fit with Extra Myth's narrative.

*The reason why Oppenheimer took Bhagavad Gita quite personally was also because it was a sort of rational consolation to himself. He was born with immense intellect and gift of quantum physics, he was a scientist and he belonged to theoretical physics, it was his true nature in universe and naturally his duty(dharma) to show mankind something so destructive, Even though he quoted Vishnu, I believe he really saw himself as Arjun, who was only fulfilling his duty by carrying out the will of god as if the god had already planned it out for nuclear bombs to be the demise of humankind and Oppenheimer was only one of the starting medium to reach that end-result.* Also, if we draw the parallels, many manyyy soldiers died in Mahabharat but prior to that Arjun already saw them rushing towards their physical death(as the soul is immortal just like the supreme spirit) , Oppenheimer and other scientists also knew how deadly the bomb is going to be and how many are going to die, yet Oppenheimer did not try his best to stop that and let all those people die, later to be viewed in US as the "cost of victory" just like Pandavas who had to kill millions just to ensure victory of Dharma over Adharma (But they lost their own sons and relatives in it too).
Well that depends on the true nature of them. Here, the pure essence of Krishna is a calm collected attitude. The beauty in observing the universe and just how it works is completely neutral and does not involve any wordly feeling. That's why he is rather calm and composed. But since he is a manifestation who came to preserve the world's righteousness, he also holds great compassion for his friends and fighting for dharma. The version he showed Arjuna (his true form) was proven to be dangerous and frightening to observe because the truest cosmic order of the universe can be the most beautiful thing and the most ruthless occurence at the same time. Because he is time and space, and time can destroy everything. He is birth and he is death.
Krishna is one of the complete Avatars of Mahavishnu (one of the Trinities) so basically God in mortal Human form. Avatars are Gods that are decent to the mortal realms (earth is in the 7th realm) to maintain the balance of Good and evil. Whenever the cosmic equilibrium of good vs evil tilt towards evil Mahavishnu take Avatars.

One thing that makes Hinduism different from any other religion is we believe God is in everything. Because if God created this universe then where did God get all the materials to create this universe? Was there someone else who gave those materials? Then how come there is one god? It gets in a loop. The simple answer is he never created any universe he himself is the universe. And within this supreme universe there are infinte universes born and die. We are just in one of those universes. We can't see that because there is a curtain called "Maya" which means a layer of lie which prevents us from seeing the true form of the universe. This is why Krishna gave Arjuna special eyes to see his true form during Gita.
We Balinese Hindu pretty much believe that Krishna is a manifestation (not reincarnation) of Visnu and in the past there was nine other manifestation of Visnu that came to save the world when it needed (Budha is also included in the gang) they called Avatara. No matter who you're fighting, the only thing that matters is your right dharma - Krishna
Your right karma (action) should always be your Dharma.

Wherein Ganesh comes back to life, and forgives the dude.
Edit: since this is from my early days in primary school, don’t take it reliably whatsoever
@@pyrrhusofepirus8491 ok first of don't use the word ( you know which one ) while telling a mythological anecdote its disrespectful. 2 it was his father shiva and the replacement was once he realised what horrer he had committed . The gods search for the nearest head to replace only to find it belongs to a baby elephant and hence ganesh has the head of an elephant
It goes like this:
Ganesha's mother went to the bathhouse, instructing him to not allow anyone in.

He was born with immense intellect and gift of quantum physics, he was a scientist and he belonged to theoretical physics, it was his true nature in universe and naturally his duty(dharma) to show mankind something so destructive, Even though he quoted Vishnu, I believe he really saw himself as Arjun, who was only fulfilling his duty by carrying out the will of god as if the god had already planned it out for nuclear bombs to be the demise of humankind and Oppenheimer was only one of the starting medium to reach that end-result.*
Also, if we draw the parallels, many manyyy soldiers died in Mahabharat but prior to that Arjun already saw them rushing towards their physical death(as the soul is immortal just like the supreme spirit) , Oppenheimer and other scientists also knew how deadly the bomb is going to be and how many are going to die, yet Oppenheimer did not try his best to stop that and let all those people die, later to be viewed in US as the "cost of victory" just like Pandavas who had to kill millions just to ensure victory of Dharma over Adharma (But they lost their own sons and relatives in it too).
Well-researched and balanced. Using this as an intro for my first-year humanities students reading the Gita!
I never knew that Hindu gods were so chill
This explanation is very rushed, please read the whole bhagvad gita to understand to true essence

Just as teacher gave out an assignment to read Mahabharata, you dropped this video! Thank you so much!
0:22 I wonder where Bhishma is? Maybe he just might be the giant of a man with a flowing white beard and blazing white eyes...
The telling features!
Thats Dhritarasthra the blind father of 100 princes Kauravas. In 0:22 The pandavas are just five because their father died when they were little.
6:09 , Arjuna is an archer , not a swords man
Pls continue series of Indian mythology
don't like it... as much since alot of endless mean zero sense just to confusing people...

How is the Mahabharata Indian "Mythology"?
It's Indian History.
I really didn't expect him to summarise gita that well, sure that wasn't the all of it, he possibly couldn't have summarised whole of gita, but he did very well summarise the essence of it, well done!!!
We also believe there will be the 11th avatara to come and save the world someday.
The real one is more like there will be 10th avatara 'kali' who will be the destroyer of everything!
