You can search for Amar Chitra Katha Comic books for this they have alot of Indian myths in form of comics. For Specific normal reading you can go with Devdutt Patnaik's "Sita" and for Some OG feel you can try Ramcharitmanas by G. Tulsidas in english this was written in 17th century. Original text by Valmiki is much older than this all.
Let's not forget that Ravana kidnapped Sita as retribution to Lakshman(Rama's brother) cutting off his sister's nose. Also he did not mistreat Sita while in captivity. I'm a Shaivite Hindu and if I had lived at that time, I'd probably be in Ravanas army. 😅 He was not a cruel ruler, and the Tamil Hindus of Lanka venerate him to this day in their oldest Hindu temple (the most Ancient temple in the island 2600+ years old) to this day. This temple was build by Ravana for Shiva, and there is a prominent Ravana statue at the front of the temple He was also a scholar and a musician (he created Ragas that are popular to this day in south Indian Carnatic music) and while on his deathbed Rama learned the art of statecraft and good governance from Ravan, as he was considered the most learned person at the world at that time. Here is a video of him engaging in a musician competition (from a old movie) ua-cam.com/video/i7VzRz931aU/v-deo.html

I've been to Ravanas temple(The Shiva temple) in Lanka, and standing on that hill, right next to the sea, seeing this amazing historical temple brought chills to me. I will chose Ravana if I have been given the choice. It's not that one is wrong or right..it's like the situation between Karna and the Pandavas Unfortunately the Buddhists in Lanka are trying to take over the temple and it's land. This story has many interpretations where Lankans have their own which is very different from the mainstream story. So I am not worried about the story much. Anyway good to see south Asian mythologies on this channel.
This version is too weird man you left lots of part untouched. Ravan wasn't vulnerable to humans or else anyone would have killed him. Not mentioning shurpnakha and lakshman and not really explaining the Ram's situation makes it even more weird. Nice try though

Which Ramayan or any Of Itihass is this taken from, what's the source?

The Ragas he composed are still used to this day, in the south Indian Carnatic musical tradition. He was also considered the most educated person in the world at that time, and the people of his country lived him as he was a very kind and just ruler(what extra credit said about his cruel rule is not found on the Ramayana). In fact after the battle while he lay on his deathbed, Rama sat down by his bed to learn from him the art of statecraft and governance

My first experience with a Rakshasa in a story was in Critical Role, campaign 1. That was a troublesome devil. Not the same as in the original folklore, but the D&D version was still heavily influenced by it.
Well As far as I have read "The Ramayana" Written by Valmiki around 600 BCE and "The Ramcharitmanas" written by Tulsidas in 16th-century I find many differences in what you told and what was written in the books like When Ravana kidnapped Sita ji she was in exile with Rama ji and Lakshmana ji and they had gone to hunt for a golden deer (Which again was a Rakshasa), Ravana came as a mendicant begging for Food(not as a beggar) and she was not being guarded. Second one was that Rama Ji During the battle Shot at Ravana's navel and not at his chest. But as I see it, a legends only grows stronger and its message becomes more convincing to a variety of people as its different variations grow (well not in the case when the entire message of the legend is altered😅😅 but I see that its not the case in here) Anyway Loved your work.
Amazing video. BUT VERY SHORT. It's impossible to make a series on a major character from the Ramayana. I hope though extra mythology grows and is able to make more thorough videos.
Wait, hold up. What about the part where Ravana was a giant four-armed sword-wielding bug man who rejoiced in the glory of combat? That's my favorite part.
The Tamil Hindus of Lanka have a Shiva temple dedicated by Ravana who is held in the highest esteem and considered the holiest temple for them to this day. It has a history of more than 2600 years and while the original temple was destroyed by the sea, and a later one destroyed by a Buddhist king and later the Portuguese, a rebuilt one still stands to this day on a hill by the sea. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koneswaram_Temple

The most popular telling of the sita kidnapping myth is this, Rama and Sita were in exile(long story) in the forest. Rama told sita not to cross a magical circle he drew for her safety around their hut, when he went to hunt. That's when Ravana shows up. He disguises himself as a beggar and begs her for help. Being the nicest person in the world, she eventually agrees to step outside. And boom. She's gone.
Great video, but There are some things I have heard from a different version of the stories, especially on the morality of the Rakshasa and the classification of Ravana as one. Ravana was not only a Rakshasa, his maternal grandmother was a Rakshasi, his maternal granddad was a Yaksha, another classification, his paternal grandfather was a Brahmin called Pulastya and his paternal grandmother was an Asura. All classifications can be equally good or bad, both Rakshasa and Deva. In some versions Ravana is a good person and the heads that he chopped off were returned by Durga, so he gained ten. As a side note, he was once captured by Sahastrarjuna, who was a king with a thousand hands, that particular story is also extremely funny where Ravana challenges the guy to a battle because he was upstream and stopping the pressure of a river Ravan was bathing in. In the end Pulastya had to bail him out as Ravan was still a Brahmin technically. And Pulastya his grandfather is one of the seven great sages and one of the 10 original songs of Brahma. Ravan himself is considered good sometimes and everyone did sacrifices, even Rama. Edit: one last thing, just a pet peeve of mine, Ram should be dark-skinned not blue, and shiva fair-skinned, only the neck is blue because he drank poison. Yes, this is how they are usually portrayed but colonialism may have something to do with. Overall great video, you did mention a lot of things people miss, so thank you and keep going. Love you guys
Will there one day be the myths of the nagas of Hindu folklore. I’d like to know something about em. Btw I really enjoy these extra mythology videos as well as extra history videos
There are a few inaccuracies that are different from the general tale: Ravana was a great devotee of Shiva and he wanted to bring Shiva with him along with Kailash so he tried to lift mount Kailash. Shiva pressed his big toe on the mountain and crushed Ravana below the massive mountain. Ravana then begged for forgiveness and was then pardoned. 2. Vishnu became Rama just to kill Ravana because no regular human could do so. It wasn't by coincidence that they met. 3. Sita wasn't guarded by a few guards. Rama was exiled from his kingdom because his stepmother wanted her son to become king of instead of Rama, the eldest. So they were exiled for 14 years and when Rama went out one day, Sita was left at home with Lakshmana (Rama's second younger brother). The Rakshasas played a trick to make Lakshmana leave and kidnapped Sita.

Umm, some pieces where... Ah misinterpreted to say the least, but that's understandable. I'll just mention a few... Ravan's weakness (and yeah that how we pronounce it Ravan and not Ravana 😅 but yeah we add an "a" in the end probably because of some complexities with Sanskrit to Hindi to English.) was his navel and that's where he was shot. There was no one with Seta when Ravana came, also he came as a wandering sage and not exactly beggar, asking "Bhiksha" umm kinda different from begging. And there are others but that would make this long. But in all honesty it was interesting :)

How amazing is it to have such an ancient story to be told to us today? Anyone know a good (fun) book to read old Indian myths for a total dummy on the topic?
You can search for Amar Chitra Katha Comic books for this they have alot of Indian myths in form of comics. For Specific normal reading you can go with Devdutt Patnaik's "Sita" and for Some OG feel you can try Ramcharitmanas by G. Tulsidas in english this was written in 17th century. Original text by Valmiki is much older than this all.
Wikipedia, tbh. 😂
He was not a cruel ruler, and the Tamil Hindus of Lanka venerate him to this day in their oldest Hindu temple (the most Ancient temple in the island 2600+ years old) to this day. This temple was build by Ravana for Shiva, and there is a prominent Ravana statue at the front of the temple
He was also a scholar and a musician (he created Ragas that are popular to this day in south Indian Carnatic music) and while on his deathbed Rama learned the art of statecraft and good governance from Ravan, as he was considered the most learned person at the world at that time.
Here is a video of him engaging in a musician competition (from a old movie)

So you are side of a person whom Shiva didn't forgive even though he was his devotee and Shiva is easily forgive full..... Even Ram was also devotee of Shiva.....
@@heyquitstealingmymoves6538 bro, Hinduism is vast, and many traditions make it what it is now. A lot of Puranas and other stories connect gods and others later in various ways, esp the story of Shiva forgiving etc.
Also I'm pretty sure that Shiva was cool with what Ravana was doing. I've been to Ravanas temple(The Shiva temple) in Lanka, and standing on that hill, right next to the sea, seeing this amazing historical temple brought chills to me. I will chose Ravana if I have been given the choice. It's not that one is wrong or right..it's like the situation between Karna and the Pandavas
Unfortunately the Buddhists in Lanka are trying to take over the temple and it's land. They want to hide the pre-buddhist history of this island, and claim Ravana was a Buddhist.lol

Yes, Indian mythology. Thank you very much Extra Credits!
This story has many interpretations where Lankans have their own which is very different from the mainstream story. So I am not worried about the story much. Anyway good to see south Asian mythologies on this channel.
Forget about the video, the intro is fire
This version is too weird man you left lots of part untouched. Ravan wasn't vulnerable to humans or else anyone would have killed him. Not mentioning shurpnakha and lakshman and not really explaining the Ram's situation makes it even more weird. Nice try though

Wait! their are many interpretations of Ramayan and Ravan's story but I'm pretty sure Ram and Sita's vanwas(forrest dwelling) is common in them all, so Sita can not "underguard by soldiers" 😶 is he talking about Lakhsaman Rekha that kept her safe?

Video of Ravana playing the Veena in a competition
ua-cam.com/video/i7VzRz931aU/v-deo.html
Ravana was also an accomplished scholar and musician ..as well as a Veena player.

Looking at the Monkey King like, "Oh, you know what's up."
My first experience with a Rakshasa in a story was in Critical Role, campaign 1. That was a troublesome devil. Not the same as in the original folklore, but the D&D version was still heavily influenced by it.
I remember last year I watched this channel every day, but now im just really busy
But as I see it, a legends only grows stronger and its message becomes more convincing to a variety of people as its different variations grow (well not in the case when the entire message of the legend is altered😅😅 but I see that its not the case in here)
Anyway Loved your work.
Actually, Sita was taken away when Rama was banished from his kingdom with no guards in the jungle

The most popular telling of the sita kidnapping myth is this,
Rama and Sita were in exile(long story) in the forest. Rama told sita not to cross a magical circle he drew for her safety around their hut, when he went to hunt. That's when Ravana shows up. He disguises himself as a beggar and begs her for help. Being the nicest person in the world, she eventually agrees to step outside. And boom. She's gone.
It was not Ram, it was Laxman, and that's why we call it Laxman Rekha.
Out of the those three supreme gods vishnu is my favorite 😍
Really enjoy the episode. Rakshasa seem like a great warning.
Great video, but
There are some things I have heard from a different version of the stories, especially on the morality of the Rakshasa and the classification of Ravana as one.

There are a few inaccuracies that are different from the general tale:
Ravana was a great devotee of Shiva and he wanted to bring Shiva with him along with Kailash so he tried to lift mount Kailash.
