Sometimes when the gods have overseen peace on earth for over a millennium, you need a little nap. But unfortunately, Brahma has extremely bad bed breath. So bad in fact, that it manifested as the Rakshasa, entities that were fierce and monstrous, who immediately started gnawing on Brahma. For this, they were sent to earth... where they began gnawing on humanity instead. And among them, one got a taste for the power of ruling over man: Ravana. But he also had one enemy in the form of Rama. And one day, decided to kidnap Rama's wife Sita. This is bound to go well.

3:00 Elaborating, Kumbhakarna actually wanted to ask for "Indraasana" (Indra's throne, where Indra is the chief of the deities), and the Gods knew this. So they asked Saraswati (Goddess of learning and speech) to occupy his tongue so he may mispronounce his wish. As a result, Kumbhakarna mispronounced "Indraasana" as "Nidraasana", literally meaning "sleeping couch". Brahma was more than happy to grant that.

I am surprised how close this comes to the original story. But, being an Indian I will like to correct some facts:
    1. Ravana asked for "Amrit" or the elixir of eternal life, but it could be drank only by gods. So Ravana placed the pot of the elixir in his belly button and would be granted invincibility till the pot is intact.
    2. Ravana conquered with Lanka after getting only his first boon and not the sword.
    3. Ravana didn't grow heads like a hydra, he was so knowledgeable that the information could not be stored in 1 head. But when he asked for a boon from Lord Shiva, shiva told him that his heads did not represent his knowledge anymore rather represented his arrogance, on which Ravana chopped all his head and in return god shiva's sword. He proceeded to become shiva's devotee. He also got a "panchshool" or a 5 pronged trident which protected Lanka from any harm from outside.
    4. He once asked shiva to come to his mansion and reside there as staying at a mountain like Kailash was not fit for such a divine being. But Shiva was deep in meditation then Ravana decided to pick the hole mountain and take it with him. But when shiva set his foot down, the mountain crashed on Ravanas hand. When he asked for another chance, he was given the task to take a shivaling (a representation of lord shiva) to Lanka without setting it on the ground once. But was tricked by the gods into doing so.
    5. Ravana got angry and swore vengeance on the gods, he went and captured every god (Not supreme gods aka Brahma Vishnu Shiva) and petrified them like a statue in his palace halls.
    6. Sita was not being protected by guards rather was in exile for 14 years with his husband Ram and hid brother Laxman. The brothers were tricked by Ravana into following a golden deer(which Sita demanded) and took the form of a beggar to capture her.\
    7. Hanuman although strongest was not the king rather a minister in the court of Monkey King Sugreev, and along with an army completely compromised of beasts and vanars(they were not complete monkey-like nowadays, rather were trained monkeys that wielded weapons and armours).
    8. In the battle the arrow was shot in Ravana's belly button(as Vibhishan told them the secret about the elixir pot) and hence died.

Ravana was also an accomplished scholar and musician ..as well as a Veena player. The Ragas he composed are still used to this day, in the south Indian Carnatic musical tradition. He was also considered the most educated person in the world at that time, and the people of his country lived him as he was a very kind and just ruler(what extra credit said about his cruel rule is not found on the Ramayana). In fact after the battle while he lay on his deathbed, Rama sat down by his bed to learn from him the art of statecraft and governance

I'm a Shaivite Hindu and if I had lived at that time, I'd probably be in Ravanas army. 😅
He was not a cruel ruler, and the Tamil Hindus of Lanka venerate him to this day in their oldest Hindu temple (the most Ancient temple in the island 2600+ years old) to this day. This temple was build by Ravana for Shiva, and there is a prominent Ravana statue at the front of the temple
He was also a scholar and a musician (he created Ragas that are popular to this day in south Indian Carnatic music) and while on his deathbed Rama learned the art of statecraft and good governance from Ravan, as he was considered the most learned person at the world at that time.

I've been to Ravanas temple(The Shiva temple) in Lanka, and standing on that hill, right next to the sea, seeing this amazing historical temple brought chills to me. I will chose Ravana if I have been given the choice. It's not that one is wrong or right..it's like the situation between Karna and the Pandavas

Ravan's weakness (and yeah that how we pronounce it Ravan and not Ravana 😅 but yeah we add an "a" in the end probably because of some complexities with Sanskrit to Hindi to English.) was his navel and that's where he was shot. There was no one with Seta when Ravana came, also he came as a wandering sage and not exactly beggar, asking "Bhiksha" umm kinda different from begging. Well As far as I have read "The Ramayana" Written by Valmiki around 600 BCE and "The Ramcharitmanas" written by Tulsidas in 16th-century I find many differences in what you told and what was written in the books like When Ravana kidnapped Sita ji she was in exile with Rama ji and Lakshmana ji and they had gone to hunt for a golden deer (Which again was a Rakshasa), Ravana came as a mendicant begging for Food(not as a beggar) and she was not being guarded. Second one was that Rama Ji During the battle Shot at Ravana's navel and not at his chest.
But as I see it, a legends only grows stronger and its message becomes more convincing to a variety of people as its different variations grow (well not in the case when the entire message of the legend is altered😅😅 but I see that its not the case in here)
    Anyway Loved your work.

    Great video, but
There are some things I have heard from a different version of the stories, especially on the morality of the Rakshasa and the classification of Ravana as one. Ravana was not only a Rakshasa, his maternal grandmother was a Rakshasi, his maternal granddad was a Yaksha, another classification, his paternal grandfather was a Brahmin called Pulastya and his paternal grandmother was an Asura.
All classifications can be equally good or bad, both Rakshasa and Deva. In some versions Ravana is a good person and the heads that he chopped off were returned by Durga, so he gained ten.
As a side note, he was once captured by Sahastrarjuna, who was a king with a thousand hands, that particular story is also extremely funny where Ravana challenges the guy to a battle because he was upstream and stopping the pressure of a river Ravan was bathing in. In the end Pulastya had to bail him out as Ravan was still a Brahmin technically.
And Pulastya his grandfather is one of the seven great sages and one of the 10 original songs of Brahma.
Ravan himself is considered good sometimes and everyone did sacrifices, even Rama.
Edit: one last thing, just a pet peeve of mine, Ram should be dark-skinned not blue, and shiva fair-skinned, only the neck is blue because he drank poison. Yes, this is how they are usually portrayed but colonialism may have something to do with.
Overall great video, you did mention a lot of things people miss, so thank you and keep going.
    Love you guys

I think this story might be from a more folkloric side, but the Ramayana written by Valmiki (considered standard in India) mentions that Ravana was a just king despite being a demon.
Also Ravana had double advantage of being saved from everyone except from human and also he was given a necter of immortality, which stayed in Ravana's navel (Nabhi in Sanskrit) and not in his heart.
Luckily, Rama was a human incarnation of God and vibhishana (brother of Ravana) told him about Ravana's immortality nector secret.
So when Rama killed him by piercing his Navel by divine arrow, he set free Ravana of the cycle of reincarnation.
Because Ravana in his previous life was an unjust man and was cursed to become a demon. Now that he died at the hands of God Rama, his curse was lifted.

The most popular telling of the sita kidnapping myth is this,
Rama and Sita were in exile(long story) in the forest. Rama told sita not to cross a magical circle he drew for her safety around their hut, when he went to hunt. That's when Ravana shows up. He disguises himself as a beggar and begs her for help. Being the nicest person in the world, she eventually agrees to step outside. And boom. She's gone.

There are a few inaccuracies that are different from the general tale:
Ravana was a great devotee of Shiva and he wanted to bring Shiva with him along with Kailash so he tried to lift mount Kailash. Shiva pressed his big toe on the mountain and crushed Ravana below the massive mountain. Ravana then begged for forgiveness and was then pardoned.
    2. Vishnu became Rama just to kill Ravana because no regular human could do so. It wasn't by coincidence that they met.
    3. Sita wasn't guarded by a few guards. Rama was exiled from his kingdom because his stepmother wanted her son to become king of instead of Rama, the eldest. So they were exiled for 14 years and when Rama went out one day, Sita was left at home with Lakshmana (Rama's second younger brother). The Rakshasas played a trick to make Lakshmana leave and kidnapped Sita.

Cutting off your own head for invulnerability more than once seems excessive
