      +gaijin hunter btw you completely forgot to point out that from the bridge in area 4 you can jump onto laos back between his shoulder spines and his hind leg spines, that big open flat spot right in the middle of his back, iirc its a carve location and plant bombs there too iirc. also one of laos weak spots is that part of his belly that kinda hangs down just under his ribcage. you can do A LOT of damage there, also you should have mentioned the wooden gate at the end of area 4 since it impedes his progress and gives you some time to do damage.

      Well, back then, the only super large monsters that we had were the Lao Shun Lung and Shen Gaoren, so there wasn't really any comparing these monster fights to other fights like Ceadeus, Dahren Mohran, or Dalamadur. Even with all these fights, the only part that I found boring was the beginning of the Final Showdown with Jhen/Dahren Mohran when you had to wait for its large ass to walk a bit closer.

    Yes, this monster was a chore, such a tedious fight where nothing happened. However, that is not its fault; it's yours. You're not cool or strong enough to warrant attention from Lao. *He doesn't care about you*. He only wants to get where he's going and *you're in the way*.
    I remember the first time I came across Lao Shan Lung. That eerie silent flag, waving harshly in the wind. The dramatic build-up of music. You were in for an impossible fight. Again, he doesn't care. The only time he even gives you a passing thought is when you're on the bridge. Which, starting out, you weren't up there for giggles. You were a gunner, getting an advantage of high ground. You were *annoying*.
    Then, as he exits 4, you make your mad dash to 5, knowing you only had little time to do *something* to this behemoth. For your first time fighting Lao, you can't tell if you've even done anything at all to him. He's done nothing but give off an aura of invincibility. And you were just 4 shmucks, fighting a *mountain that moves*. You stood ready, wherever you thought you were needed most. You waited that moment for him to arrive. It felt like forever.
    Then he enters... And for the first time, you hear *the song* pick up. I remember that song so vividly, it remains one of my favorite in the game(s). It alone filled you with *determination*. You and your fellow hunters, you would become brothers and sisters that day. With everything you had and more, you fought to stop the rock.
    *"The last and decisive battle"*.

      That's what I've been thinking too. If we took the Shen Gaoren's skull-shell as a remnant of a Lao Shan Lung that died of natural causes, by scaling, the ones we fight are miniscule by comparison.
      In truth, I feel that full-grown Lao Shan Lungs are truly titanic, and the only reason the ones we fight are this size is because if they any larger, their heads and bodies would've been too high for melee weapons to reach.

    Fun Fact: You can actually trip the Lao Shan Lung. It'll fall down on just lay there for some seconds so you can hit it. By doing this it is possible to prevent it from getting to Area 5.
    Me and 2 friends managed to do this in Monster Hunter Freedom 2, abusing the stupidly strong Akantor Bow, aiming for his backlegs all the time. Since he cannot be killed before reaching the final area he will flee from one of the previous areas.
    Since it looks really weird when he does I think it was not ment to ever happen, but it can be done.

    I would love if they could like, take this idea of a fight against an unstoppable mountain of a monster just charging clear through a fortress and make it more than just 'wail on it until he dies'. Like, my image in my head is roughly something like...
    You're dropped in the map like seen here and you're given a fleeting few minutes, the more players the shorter so there's a focus on multitasking if you have the luxury of more hunters, to prepare for the beast's arrival. You're given a huge array of unique equipment that's impractical for standard hunting use but made especially for something like a Lao Shan Lung; Super Pitfall Traps the size of the whole valley horizontally that take an extra long time to deploy but are big enough to actually delay the thing a good deal to let you swing at it's head, Barrel Bomb G+s that are just massive explosions, some kind of maneuverable cannon like in the Battlequarters except way better at moving to specific places that goes around the rafters above. Then when the dragon actually gets there, the fight is completely 'anything goes' as long as it results in the death of this huge monster, so you can do shit like blow up an overpass that is normally a bridge into the city as the guy is passing under it so you can pin him to the ground for a while under the rubble and do some fierce damage at the same time. Just do everything you can to make it feel like a one-monster siege.
    ... Alternatively, for when you're grinding and you've stopped giving a shit about spectacle, there's a huge gong all present players have to ring at once that signals for the guards to open the gate early and let the Lao Shan Lung right on in. He'd be doable without any of the aforementioned nonsense but it'd look a lot less cool since you'd just be wailing on a meatwall, but this is what you'd do when you straight up do not give a shit about looking cool anymore so there you go.

      +Cobalt Kirikizan I'd like to see fights where you actually have to break through the monster's armor
      Like you'd have to break off a horn or something to even get to the soft skin underneath
      Such gating of damage in fights would make for some great changes to gameplay, especially with the mounting mechanics that I don't think they've fully explored with the bigger monsters yet

    Also, that final battle, when the Lao enters the fortress area, then the game's main soundtrack starts playing in the background. It'll give chills down to your spine, but in an excitingly good way. Making you believe that, "Okay, this is it. This is where all of those hardwork have led up to."

    I really loved hunting Lao Shan because there's so many things that constantly go through your mind as you fight it the first time. You kind of get this sense of helplessness since it really comes out that you're not sure if you're doing enough damage to kill/repel, even more so if you're doing this hunt solo which I believe was more common when playing the first few iterations of the monster hunter games. Lao Shan was definitely a wall for me in Freedom Unite which was my first monster hunter game.

    I always imagined an elder dragon that is like a kraken. The fight would be similair to Mohran, but on water with multiple circling ships, which you can jump between as they pass one another. The monster has multiple tentacles so it can pop up on multiple spots. Furthermore, the monster can sink your ships, if all are sunk its a game over. You can sever every individual tentacle like you would sever a monsters tail, you can also jump on and attack the head as it emerges from the water. I also imagine a final phase similair to the dire maralis.
    I dunno, just like imagining some possible monsters while I am playing monster hunter.

    Man, really hope they bring back this guy in the next game. Giant monster hunting has gone a LONG way and its not as boring as it used to be. It would be interesting to fight this guy actually actively moving and fighting you the way Dire or George did.
    And who knows, maybe Capcom would confirm the rumor that all the Lao we've hunt so far are babies and make a massive, full grown version of it (cuz lets be honest, Lao's size is not really that impressive now compared to the new giants). Think Shen's skull shell, but with it attached to an actual living Lao. Shit would be like 5x the size of a regular Lao and could swallow a Rathalos whole.

    • @DaUsher
      @DaUsher 8 років тому +5

      You must realise that Lao was only as big as it was because of the limitations of the design.

    10+ years ago, I was on a shopping tour with a friend at downtown. I was young and had 30€ in my pocket. Our objective for the day: Buy something special to eat and go home. Before we went to the next supermarket, we decided to have a short look at the next electronic shop. So many PS2 games... too many... my friend said: "Let's go, I'm hungry." I was standing in front of a bunch of PS2 games and wanted to pickup one of them randomly, while looking at him. We talked about food. I was hungry too, so the random game in my hand, was the last one I wanted to touch.
    "Monster Hunter? Never heard of it..." That's what I thought first. Then I red the text on the backside of the game. "Hmm, sounds interesting..." I didn't expect, that this decision would change my life.
    I bought that game for 20€. My friend did so too, because of the multiplayer part. We didn't expect anything...
    Than, a few weeks later, we met our first Lao. It was an epic moment. A monster, which is unstoppable, walking and walking while it's been attacked by four hunters with massive firepower... and then the MH theme. OMG! IT WAS SO EPIC! Goosbumps!
    At the end, we spend more than 500h with the first Monster Hunter game, bought each other MH game, the Manga and a bunch of franchise and merchandise stuff.
    This game was next to Final Fantasy VII, my most favorite game of all time.
    Thanks for the vids @gaijin_hunter

    I really like the idea of an elder dragon threatening each village. The story would be better for it, or maybe even a faction system where you can side with a village more, idk. It would be cool to have an Arzuros or a similarly challenging monster in the village at the start of the game and you have to fight it, if you lose the game would take an easier route, with npcs treating you as a scrub at the beginning, but if you kill it or drive it away, the townsfolk would respect you as a powerful hunter.

    I remember when both me and my older brother used to hunt this beast. Both our weapons were longswords and we use the dragon element ones... and another fun fact is that it takes 2-5 hunts to successfuly kill a lao shun lung, what we do is at the beggining of the game we stock up on ballista ammo up to max and then I go to the 1st area and wait for lao, my brother goes to the area going to the fortress and kill all the iopreys until they don't spawn anymore. I set up large bomb+ to the face of lao to easily destroy the horns and repeat, make sure to always stand on top of bridge to make lao take longer time to get to the final area. If you keep doing this mission again and again chances are you can kill lao in area 4 without him reaching area 5. When he finally appears on area 5 I have already carried my cannon ammo to the cannon and my brother is attacking the lao. once his body is Next to the mountain (not the fortress) you can start firing. I have the Artillery stat so it takes 2 shot from the cannon to stagger him. Also use all the ballista ammo first before going to the cannon since you can hit lao at long range with it leaving you with more time to get more ballista ammo and then go to the cannon ammo next. Just wanna share my experience with my brother since this was our 1st monster hunter. :3

    The first MH game I played was MHFU and this quest was the most memorable one. I bought a PS4 two weeks ago just to play MHW and I'm really suprised about how my 8 year old self reached this level after remembering how hard it is to grind items and hit your combos back in the day. I'm just really happy that my uncle introduced me to this wonderful game and hopefully, I can hunt Lao Shan Lung with him again but in MHW soon.

    In MHFU, NPC's tell that this gigantic dragon it's actually a BABY, running away from a Fatalis.
    I've always thought to myself...
    Can you possibly imagine how insanely powerfull and colossal a ADULT, Lao Shan Lung would be?
    In my opinion, I think a adult would be able to:
    • In MHFU, Lao Shan was strangely weak to Fire. Maybe because it couldn't control his FIRE BREATH YET? Yeah, that's right.
    Fire Breath;
    • How about Lao's skin? Blue Sharpness would do the trick... What if a adult skin it's so tough, that you needed PURPLE Sharpness just to scratch it?
    Oh my... GOG. °_° ;
    •Remember Lao's roar? Imagine if a adult could scream SO LOUD, that would, quite literally, create a SCREAM SHIELD of Dragon Energy that would send hunters flying sky high, and SHATTER the very ground?;
    That would be awesome.
    And incredibly TERRYFIYNG.
    :v

    I just want to add and comment on a few things:
    Lao Shan appeared in low high and g rank in MHFU(2ndG). Whats interesting is, that on your current rank it is a pain in the ass to kill. The reason is, that in MHFU the best weapons were simply the longsword and the hammer (for really good players also the greatsword). A problem was, that the Longsword is actually the best weapon for him (imo) because you can permaspam your attacks, and the weakpoint for cutting weapons is the head, which is also the savest spot, because theres no wind pressure and you cant get hit easily. But at the points in the game where you have to fight him (exepct g rank) you not always had that good longswords. Now you can also kill him with the hammer. But its a lot harder. Because his weakpoint for impact weapons was the belly. And theres a lot of wind pressure, and you can easily get hit. Also getting away from him to sharpen your weapon is a lot harder.
    Whats funny now is, that you for example go on the low rank hunt with g rank equip, you needed to be really really careful. The reason being, that his health cannot drop under a specific amount before area 5 (you cant kill him before that exept with cheats), but you dont know when the point is reached, and he will still stagger. So it is possible that you lose the quest, because the time runs out, before lao shan reached area 5 because you staggered him to often. And it really wasnt a hard thing to do. (Maybe this was also a problem when playing with 4 people. Dunno for sure tho)
    Also got a little thing to add: You were able to jump onto him from the bridge after he attacked you and get 2 carves and place anti-dragon bombs.
    Gaijin mentioned that it was possible to attack him with the balista and cannons, and that in multiplayer you maybe want to split the roles. Sadly the cannonballs were really, really far away in the base. Remember: You have to gather one, walk all the way to the cannon through area 6 while avoiding the iopreys, and then run back. Nobody did that. With the ballista i normally handled it like I took the ones out of the supply box and shot those at him, but ignored the rest.
    The idea of lao shan lung and shen gaoren was cool. But in reality it sometimes was really annoying. Because you spend 35 minutes and in most cases only got a repel. And if you had to farm him for a gem, it took ages was just boring, because the first 25 minutes nothing happend.
    So i would look forward to see him again. Because the idea was cool. But only if they changed the hunt, so that hunting and farming him wouldnt be boring for 25 minutes, then 10 minutes immense time pressure and then disappointment if you didnt get your carves. =)

    Who do you guys think is the worst of the elder dragons?
    My personal pick goes to Alatreon, mostly because his fight didnt feel like one based on skill but more on patience and luck. That and that there is always that one player who gets killed five times, at least with Mohran and this guy most people dont die.

    • @TeamMosswine
      @TeamMosswine 9 років тому +3

      Fatalis trio before they were redone in mh4u in my opinion weres the worst. Having to fight them multiple times was just tedious and using the guts skill to not get one shotted by everything was crazy. Beating them for the first time felt rewarding as fuck but trying to farm for the equipment felt mostly just tedious. Also there was no reliable online play so you were fighting them pretty much all alone.

    • @eishikibahamut
      @eishikibahamut 9 років тому

      +The Will of G
      I really dont like Jhen Mohran. He's just a huge time sink and you basically are required to use a great sword if you're fighting solo and then he becomes a joke. Its those kinda fights that cause me to eventually quit every monster hunter I play

    • @somniloguy12
      @somniloguy12 9 років тому

      Otsisossi Hmm, I havent done them in mh4u yet, are they better there?
      Because this sounds pretty ridiculous.
      But I feel that's the thing with most elder dragons, I always find that they are very awesome on your first fight, but farming is for most elder dragons pretty awful. They often fall in one of two categories:
      1: They become boring long fights (Ceaudeus, Mohran, Dalamadur etc)
      2: Their difficulty makes them frustrating (alatreon, Ukanlos and prob fatalis)

    • @levobertus
      @levobertus 9 років тому +3

      Chameleos. This thing is cancer. All the ones mentioned above are imo not bad. Most disappointing one goes to Gogmazios, because its just so boring and the atmosphere is just bland and I really wanted that thing to become an awesome monster.

    • @TeamMosswine
      @TeamMosswine 9 років тому +1

      +The Will of G The fatalis trio is pretty nice in mh4u. They have a lot less hp so they die pretty fast but their moves are a bit faster so its not too boring either. They can be a bit too easy online tho because with ig you can just get as many mounts as you like and then have 4 ppl go ham on the head at the same time and that kills the strongest of the elder dragons in under 5 mins ._.

      Amfibios Lao ignoring you is the point. He doesn't care about you, you're not scaring him. The only time he attacks you is when you're on the bridge. An opportunity to remove an annoyance, similar to how we smack a mosquito. He doesn't give a fuck about the hunters. *He doesn't care about you, the town, the Fort, or anything.* He just wants to get the fuck away from the Fatalis, and you just happen to be in the goddamn way of him.

    Honestly, I remember when I first got into MH was around gen 2. I remember looking up some of the monsters to get an idea as to what I could fight and what looked cool. Their weapons, armors, ,etc. And I saw the Lao. My first thought was "I want to fight that." I couldn't wait. When I got MHF2, I was busting my ass trying to see when I could fight it, and then I did. I loved the fight. It was intense. Figuring out what to do at first, getting knocked around all the time. The boulders, its legs, being smacked around. It was awesome. Then when you finally solo it and kill it with your own two hands, you accomplished something great. You didn't just climb a wall blocking your way, you tore down the mountain stopping you. It still remains as one of my fav elder dragons, I'd say top 5 tbh. It's such a simple, but destructive creature.

    This guy looks awesome. I love the idea of a monster as more of this "Embodiment of Nature" deal where it doesn't care about the hunters at all and is set single-mindedly on destruction. I can imagine it makes the fight feel pretty damn imposing the first time you enter it: spending 30 minutes trying to take down a monster where it doesn't even acknowledge your existence and where you don't even know if you're attacks are doing any damage, just praying you can save the fortress in time.

  • @AliTheNerdKing
    @AliTheNerdKing 8 років тому

    Honestly to this day,this is the only monster that still instills fear in me. You fight this thing, hurting it as much as you can, fighting it to the best of you abilities. The monster smacks the fortress hard, time is low and all throughout the fight your wondering if you can do this. And then when 5 minutes are left, your heart pounds, and the fear begins to set it. "What if i cant kill it, is it within my power?" The timer counts down and you either repel it, kill, fail. And at the end you either left with a big smile and the adrenaline still running or the anger and disappointment of losing. Its a great monster.
