As an Indian listening to this gentleman, I find it astonishing he identifies the Pak Army Officer Corps, especially the Higher Command, as patriotic and meritorious. What kind of patriotism leads to decisions like land grabbing, plot cutting, looting a nation's resources and moving to foreign lands, en familia, after retirement? What meritocratic patriot buys expensive weapons for generations, torpedoing the economy forever? No Pakistani should be ready to die on this ignominious hill. Is this "economist", who appears to be biased in favor of Pak Armed forces (probably coming from such a background), even well educated??

As per Dr Hasnain, India’s politics is built on vilifying Pakistan.
But even a cursory reading of Pakistani news over time suggests that their Primary focus as a culture and country has been distorted to being anti-India.
Even as a non-BJP supporter, I can appreciate the dilemma of Govt of India: beyond the histrionics of politics, the LoC will end up as a International Border. This is definite. But to move towards mending relationships with Pakistan is to reward the Pak Army which is only talking the rhetoric of Geo-Economics as it needs a better functioning economy to fatten itself.
Finally, till Pakistan does not have civilian supremacy - any mending of relations with India will not have any domestic legitimacy in Pakistan itself. This is the challenge to India-Pakistan relations.

    • @tagore161

Don't be so sure on LoC becoming border. Pakistan may not last till 2047. Pashtuns, balochs, Sindhi all have differing views from the dominant paki Punjabi community.

Narsimha Rao government who started liberalization in India, lost re-election. Vajpayee government who continued major reforms also lost re-election. Both were patriots who put national interest first over re-election. Þhe first 10-12 years of reforms are exceedingly painful. People who have lived much beyond their means will drastically see their standard of living fall.
If you cannot bear the pain associated with 4 months of Miftah, how will you bear 10-12 years of pain? The pain is not theoretical - it IS real.

    1. Today it is the anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai attacks for us. We lost so many innocent lives in this terrorist attack emanating from Pakistan. We are losing precious soldiers in Kashmir on a regular basis.
    2. India witnessed the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits, again due to terrorism.
    3. Bangladesh witnessed the genocide (murders, rapes) in 1971, and it is well documented. The Pak govt has not even said sorry to Bangladesh till date.
The current generation of India will not forget and forgive anyone. Pakistan is moving towards being a completely failed state and mark my words, it will be ruined due to its bad karma. The main reason for downfall of Pakistan will be the silence of its citizens against all atrocities. They have been silent against terrorism. Now, they are witnessing the effects of their silence.

The bulk of people leaving from ISB airport are daily wage workers. The departure gate is packed with people from all over northern areas of Pakistan who mostly leave for Arab countries. Incoming is nonexistent in terms of international travelers and most incoming are those same people coming home. It's not "empty", rather the arrivals are empty where as departures are full.

As a politician i would go to the army and say that in 1991 the ratio Pak defense budget to Indian defense budget was 1:3. Now despite maintaining a high defense expenditure, the ratio is 1:10. This negative direction will continue unless reforms are brought in, which will also affect military adversely. What would they say?
Secondly after 8th finance commission, 58% of revenue goes to provinces which military cannot touch. So to say that politicians have only 10% to play with is not factual.

Mr Shehzad if there are so many intellectuals are there in Pakistan, then why it had not progressed and prospered in 75 years. This may be the last chance for Pakistan to think pragmatically, shed old outdated thinking because now the world has changed. It may not give same type of aid, help to Pakistan. The problem in Pakistan is that their citizenry is so much radicalized by the leaders it has become difficult for themselves to come out of it.

I think your guest is being economical with the truth. Trade was stopped by Pakistan not India. India gave one sided MFN for a long time (before finally losing patience and revoking it) , Pakistan never extended it. So while both sides might have camps on villifying the other, trade was stopped by Pakistan. India could have stopped trade after 26/11 or any other of the numerous terrorist attacks but didn't.

Central Nervous system was mentioned 23 times! Keep this as a trend going. We need it.
Muscle is mightier than Nervous system. So it is tough for the current people to evolve a working nervous system. Also, the future cannot create a nervous system as they are all out of school.
Finally, it looks like only a TTP-TJP and it offsprings can overpower the current muscle power. So, this looks like the most evident future. Congrats to everyone 👏

Pak is living in a cocoon if they think only they can decide how to behave with neighbors. Pak govt sponsors terrorism in India and they expect India to still do GeoEconomics. Pak started wars with India and now they want peace and people to people contact. Buddy we don't want anything to do with Pak. You live your own life and we are living ours. We don't hate common Pak citizens but we don't like them either. Simple reason: The citizens are not doing anything to prevent terrorism industry in Pak. They can't even dare to protest and ask for intelligent people to come to power who can promote peace and education.

Dr Hasanain's point about the mindset in India after the Bombay attacks is perceptive. But there is a different dimension. We all know that all countries have their own share of whackos but civilized nations isolate and penalize them to serve as a deterrent. If such a follow-up had happened after the Bombay attacks, most Indians would have reconciled to the horror more readily and accepted the Pakistani state meant well. Instead the Pakistani authorities denied all knowledge and when your National Security Advisor (Gen Durrani) admitted it was the handiwork of Pakistanis, he was summarily sacked. The journalists who tracked down Kasab's parents were reviled as traitors. That is when Pakistan lost the plot because it looked that the government itself was part of the plan. So it was not the Bombay terror alone that created a deep revulsion in Indian minds but the reluctance of the Pakistani state to make the right noises and take steps that would have been reassuring to common Indians. Once established, a distrustful constituency is very difficult to fix.

1:49:09 I had high expectations on this question, but how can econ professor say this? how can any Govt tax unrealized gains? If Jeff Bezos is a billionaire, he is a billionaire on paper, if he decided to sell all his shares in the market today, the value given by investors to that share will fall. Unrealized gains can’t be taxed, the same as unrealized losses can’t be adjusted.
Access to capital for billionaires can mean made harder, like taxing the loans / debt they take, or have regulations in place that not one person can own more than, let’s say a billion dollar worth of stock on a company, i one does, he will gradually have to sell. So they can be taxed on it.

Huge sums are borrowed as short term 3 month bonds to keep white elephants like PIa, steel mill alive & to pay govt salaries. This same thing happened when Shehbaz became PM. He said there shoukd be talks with India and Bilawal said no talks until article 370 is reinstated. This waa the same condition by Imran and why as commerce minister he approved importing sugar and cotton from India and as PM he declined it. All these offers of talks with a non-starter preconditions are insincere.

Thank you Mr Ali. Glad to hear, it's not the FM, it's a political will (as you mentioned, the big boss, in India it's the PM and Pakistan, it's PM and/or combination of PM and Army) which could make the reforms work. In India, it's Mr Rao, the then PM (also, a minority govt (Congress party did not have the full majority in the house), who captained these reforms. He gave Mr. Singh, the then FM, freedom to do what's necessary.

If we look at Saudi Arabia and the UAE for example, even India, the dollar rate has remained almost the same for the past 20 Years

Saudi Arabia and UAE both have large dollar reserves and current account surplus. Pakistan has neither. Indian currency 20 year back was 1$= 48 rupees and today it us 1$=83 rupees. Indian rupee does not have a dollar peg even though it has high reserves, because like Pakistsn it has a current account deficit.
It's level of depreciation has been less than Pakistsn because it does much better in exports and much better in attracting foreign investment in industries as well as stock markets.

Ali Hasnain is thinking style seems to be of a typical privileged Punjabi who apparently subscribes to a narrow version of National identity for Pakistan. In India there is a tremendous amount of subregional cultural pride that varies from State to State and even within a state. Yet, there is no dearth of pride for being Indian or of India. Hasnain, with all due respect, needs to talk to non-Punjabi intellectuals to identify the problems with forced/manufactured identities and a loss of healthy ethnic pride. That said, he is a fine intellectual and a fine economist and a credit to LUMS.

Haha he gave a very clear view of why relations between India and Pakistan will not normalise and trade will not happen. Post 26/11 there is a grass roots level negative view of Pakistan, so Indian politicians will have to spend tremendous political capital to overcome that. It is not worth it for them. And Pakistan has much more to gain from trade than India. For India the gains are negligible. So again it is not worth it to go against the popular sentiments for Indian poliitcians. Finally he says, in his own way, there is no way to normalise without Pakistan eating humble pie and abandoning long held positions. That is all there is to it.
The only way this will change is if both countries have a lot to gain from normalisation, and not just Pakistan. India's threshold to come to negotiations will also come down if the perception of Pakistani society and people changes in India. You can have 100s of level headed conversations and videos showcasing friendship. All it takes is 1 news of some Hindu girl being abducted, some "blasphemer" being lynched etc for it to reinforce the negative view. Even in Pakistan it works the same way, but it doesn't matter because we Indians don't need any trade with Pakistan.
Most Indian and Paki commenters are pretty stupid and tend to miss the forest for the trees.

If you go back and watch the Taimur Rahman podcast, you'll see me pushing back making the points Ali Hasnain is making here. Pushbacks help the guest articulate their point even further and add depth to it, warna toh monologue hojaye, conversation kee yehi toh beauty hay - please don't think of these things as "pushing your belief" - matlab bhi kya hay iska boss? Mai nay kaunsa danda le kar unko bola meri baat mano :D
