A very healthy discussion indeed. The takeaway of this discussion in my view is:
    1. Invest in humans.
    2. Ask the world to train your youth rather than just begging for money.
    3. Tax the landowners who escape taxes but not contributing to the economy of the country.
    4. Think over the question of why productive people are leaving this county?
    5. Put systems and institutions in place so that foreign investors can invest their money without fear of losing their capital.
    6. We need courageous leaders who can think of national interest rather than just clinging to power.
    7. Always rely on competent people who can make the best use of national assets.
As for the example of frog, it is only the salaried class who are actually bearing the brunt of taxes which is the hot water that is getting hotter and hotter every day.

Instead of sugar cane we can harvest palm trees & get jaggery from it better than sugar consisting of 12 chemical & after cooking oil (Our cooking oil is derivative of Diesel & Petrol by-product i.e., white oil, supplied to cooking oils companies) main reasons of sick population. Palm jaggery do'nt need any pesticides, fertilizer or 75% of the total water required for harvesting our crops! Needed to researched who & when, with criminal motives changed & replaced the policy of cotton crop from sugar cane? Similarly Five kind of positive Millets (5 اقسام کا مثبت باجرا) instead of GMO Wheat, with negligible water, no pesticides & no fertilizer. Can keep healthy whole Pakistan & with reduction in hospitals!! 2023 is going to be Millets year according to be UNO!

Not just Atif but the other two economic advisers declined after seeing the Abdus Salam treatment meted out to Atif. The mullahs draw their power from the public which is itself highly religiously fanatic, so blaming mullahs is just shifting the blame. There are fundamental issues with increasing focus on religion in education, media programming, religious schools and so on. This is making the average Pakistani receptive to religious fanaticism

Why Pakistan can not develop? It's because of Mullahs or extremist ideology of a group of people. First we went after Prof Abdul Salam and made him leave Pakistan and lately Atif. I don't know how many scholars we lost since inception of Pakistan.

What Atif Mian said is very well known to every Pakistani interested in Economics. Pakistan being an example of developing economy in era of Ayub Khan has come so low in all economic indicators. There are two main reasons for these issues; one Pakistan forcefully inducted in Afghan war and secondly, rise of corrupt political mafia who drained Pakistan richness. What we need is benovalent & selfless political leadership who keep Pakistan Interest on the forefront.

Somebody asked the writer V.S. Naipaul what is the future of Africa. He replied: "There is no future." The same writer showed his pessimism towards Pakistan that if the general view of Pakistan remains that a perfection in religion leads to a perfection of man, the future of Pakistan wouldn't be that different from the future of Africa. Is there a wonder why people leave a 7th century theological nightmare? Human capital? Good Luck.

Fantastic!! Prof Atif brilliant as always. My suggestion is for Pakistan to stop comparing with others and just compare with themselves, month on month, quarter on quarter, year on year. That itself would be amazing benchmarks for progress. Prof Mian mentioned this towards the end.

Some much needed reminders from Atif Mian and Shahid Yousuf. Poor moderation by Shuja Nawaz though. He should have let Atif explain first the two fundamental questions that Atif posed 1.Why Pak economy failed? 2. How change course? Understanding on those itself would have resolved the "snapshot news based type questions" that Shuja and the lady asked and on which valuable time was spent. Always remember the concept of Opportunity Cost Mr Nawaz.

Talking about fruition - "WHAT THEY HECK R YALL GROWING SUGARCANE 4" THAT IS CRAZY. Another thing that is crazy - almost 40% of Pakastan is arable land. i thought it would be 10% or something close to those numbers!!! With the right leadership and investments Pakastan could easily feed its whole populations. All countries which are export oriented have cheap energy production a must. India , china, and germany use coal to produce cheap energy for long time . Pakistan has lot of coal why it never used it . Not building Tarbela dam another example.
Pollution might be a problem using coal but still it will be less pollution than china and india poluting the enviroment.
Only cheap energy will make a country like pakistan increase its percapita income.

Unlike India and Bangladesh, Pakistan had to put up with a hostile superpower (USSR) waging a terrible, decade-long war on our doorstep. During that time our entire technological and economic strength was focused on surviving that situation while keeping the country stable. Economic analysists often tend to miss/ignore the psychological and sociological ramifications of that period (and the resulting refugee crisis and terrorism, causing political instability, increased crime rate and reduction of any foreign investment) on the nation and consequently on the country.
