- With so many highly drafted quarterbacks relocating this offseason, I wanted to understand how many first round flameouts actually succeed after moving away from their original team. In this video, we dive into what defines a quarterback bust, how they can "find a new home," and highlight the 7 guys who have done it since 1970.

That's not yr only mistake! There are MANY others. J Plunkett was drafted in '71 not 76. Amd he replaced Dan Pastorini in Oakland, not Dan Pastori. Pastorini was drafted in the same year as Plunkett, which would have been an interesting thing to note if you actually knew about football.

Yeah this was painful to watch and bring back the memories of Plunket destroying my Denver Broncos. I also have to say he was a very nice player to the fans. I had season tickets with Denver and he autographed a shirt and later a football I got from an errant pass he threw.

I'm a Raider fan and Plunkett was before my time but I know how much he meant to the Raiders and his contributions to the league. The man overcame a lot. Both of his parents are blind. I've met him on several occasions and he's such a nice man.
Yes!!! Plunkett was also a really good human being. Back in the 1970s he could’ve easily walked away because the pay wasn’t like getting $1M per season or more for 2nd & 3rd string like today. Plunkett still loved the game & knew that if he had another real opportunity that he could win for a team. Humble, quiet & hard working.

Len Dawson - Dawson was the fifth overall selection in the 1957 NFL draft, taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers, traded to the Cleveland Browns, and released after the 1961 season, having completed only 21 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns in his five seasons of NFL play. Dawson signed with the American Football League's Dallas Texans/KC Chiefs on June 30, 1962. Dawson led the league in completion percentage seven times, passer rating six times, and passing touchdowns four times. He was named Most Valuable Player in 1962 and selected to six AFL All-Star games. Dawson also guided the Chiefs to three AFL championships and the franchise's first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl IV, of which he was named MVP. Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Further fun fact: That same organization drafted Johnny Unitas two years earlier, sat him on the taxi squad the entire year, then cut him. The Colts snapped him up in 1956 and the rest was history.
One have to wonder if the real problem at the time were the Steelers themselves. They even cut Unitas while barely even gave him a shot.
Dawson played behind bobby Layne in Pittsburgh and milt plum in Cleveland so he really wasn't a bust
I'm a Colts guy and watched George play. No denying he was a prick, but Indi was hot ass at that time. He was running for his life during his entire time there, and ended up developing terrible habits. A shame, he was crazy talented.

I would still say Alex Smith counts here. Before his career was rescued by Jim Harbaugh, he was looking like the bustiest of busts, ESPECIALLY given that the Niners passed on Aaron Rogers in favor of him.
Sometimes it’s the player learning and getting better, but it’s also the fact that they just ended up going to better teams. Nobody can do it by themselves.
In Vinny Testeverde's defense, the Buccaneers of the 80s would have made Tom Brady look like Ryan Leaf because Hugh Culverhouse is the second worst owner in NFL history.
Hugh is much worse than Dan Snyder imo. Yes Snyder was bad, but starting 0-26, beefing with the commissioner, refusing to pay players who were playing well, sending over 50 players to ir in the team’s first 3 seasons, and not to mention he refused to renovate Tampa Stadium whenever it was needed. Snyder is a close second but Hugh was a much bigger a**hole than Snyder was imo

By the time Steve Young was finally made the starting QB of the 49ers, he was already well into his 30s. I remember when he was finally the starter being amazed and horrified by his play. The 49er fans were still loyal to Joe Montana. Anytime things went wrong the insult of, "That wouldn't have happened if Joe was still there," would emerge. With this going on, Young played like he had a chip on his shoulder. Like he constantly had to prove himself. He was amazing, efficient, but often took too many risks in the early 1990s with his scrambles and runs.
Young had been balling for several years straight yet was still seen as "Joe's backup." The only way he got the unquestioned respect of the 49er fans was literally winning a Super Bowl, to finally shut the last naysayers up.
Steve Young was a good backup QB.

Steve Young was always talented from the start. Even in his USFL days with the L.A. Express. He was a star in the making.
Funny that's how we remember but his numbers don't bear that out. He only threw 16 touchdowns in 2 seasons with the Express.

And its hard to believe but Drew Brees was on his way to being labelled a bust after the 2003 season. I mean, there's a reason why the Chargers drafted Philip Rivers
Josh Allen never qualified as a bust.
Drew Brees was no a bust. In SD he threw 80 TD's to 53 INT's w/a rating of 84.9. In his last three years he threw 62 TD's to 37 INT's w/a rating of 88.
@@paulmicheldenverco1 To be fair after some promise in 2002, he regressed in 2003 which is why the Chargers looked to get a QB in the 2004 draft. The guy took a bit longer to finally broke out even under normal circumstance.
@@iamhungey12345 Josh Allen's first few years weren't kind. People forget that in 2018 Josh Allen was apart of a Bills offense that was historically awful, even though they avoided going in the history books. It just goes to show how crucial QB development was for him, and how its become a lost art. Just look at how Josh Allen's fellow 2018 QBs Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen have flamed out. The 2021 QB class is an even greater example.
@@RioluLucario1994 Plus the guy progressed in his second year despite all that. Had he regressed in his third year then that would have been a concern but that didn't happen. The problem is nowadays people are expecting players to be instant hits or busts, making one wonder how many of them even follow football before 2010. There were HOF QBs who had even worse starts than that.

I know he didn't meet the criteria but it feels like Drew Brees should be on the list.
At the end of the day, Brees is the penultimate example of redemption. He wasn't bad enough to get the bust label, but only one team offered him a contract on the free market.

It was Dan Pastorini not Pastore! This was a very informative and insightful segment. I found the story of Tommy Maddox to be the most intriguing. My hometown Calgary Stampeders of the CFL signed a QB late in the 1999 season. His name was Mike McCoy and like Tommy Maddox he was also employed as an insurance agent. McCoy later went into coaching and eventually became head couch with the then San Diego Chargers.
Watch Kellen Mond after he goes to the UFL and is successful. Some pro team will pick him up in a pinch & he'll thrive,imo. In fact it would be interesting to see what UFL/XFL players went back to the #NFL. Maybe UFL will be like the training league for the #NFL someday?
Steve Young won the MVP of the Bucs the year before being traded to SF. Small minded people mistake a qb suffering a bad team w/being a bust. Speaking of busts, most of the effigies in Canton are there because the men they represent had the time to learn the hardest position in football. Even Montana wasn't the full time-starter until his third year.
Being the Bucs MVP is like being the tallest midget.
Jim Plunkett was the top pick in the 1971 NFL Draft. He was already in San Francisco by 1976.. 😶

A lot of the time, it's getting the right combination of coach, system, and QB. Flexibility is too often forced onto the quarterback, which is kind of backward. The best GMs look for QBs that seem the best fit for their system. But you use the tools you have in the box to for their intended purpose. To use a carpenter's analogy, you don't use a box of sledge hammers to install crown moulding. And you don't use a dovetail saw to rip down plywood. Some supposedly "Great" quarterbacks rode the coat tails of great running backs. Some had the luxury of a great defense, or an offensive line that gave them time to make it work. NONE would succeed on some teams. Imagine how different NFL history would be if Drew Bledsoe never got injured.
I like Steve Grogan, but the Patriots should have stayed with Plunkett. In his 1st three years in BOSTON, he played with no protection. The was pounded every game, and the defense could not stop anyone. His interceptions were due mainly because the Patriots would get down and resort to Plunkett throwing bombs to the wide outs. Then the Patriots got some talent and shipped Plunkett off to SF, who were as bad as the patriots were. Plunkett had the arm and the skills and probably would have led NE to the playoffs. Grogan was great, but Plunkett was better.
Sorry you didn't mention Doug Williams. Similar story as Jim Plunkett. ✌️
Not sure if he was a bust since he did well for someone playing in Tampa Bay offense whose only other offensive weapon was a running back who would pass away from illness few years later.
@@iamhungey12345 Yeah, he made the All-Rookie team, led the lowly Bucs to an NFC Title in his 2nd (!) year. And, before leading WA to the Super Bowl, he threw for 3,800 yds in the USFL. He had occasional challenges, just as most players do, but he was never close to being a bust.
You should have included guys like Brett Favre, Alex Smith, Rich Gannon, and Fran Tarkenton

Jonny Unitas was drafted by the Steelers and then cut. He played Semi Pro ball until he made the Colts.

A bit bold to be leading off with Cutler, who really challenges the criteria for both "bust" and "redeemed."
I know you acknowledge some of that, but I'd say we should add in a stipulation that a player isn't a bust if the player is the main reason an extension didn't happen. Because quite technically by the rules as outlined: Eli Manning is a bust and redemption QB now too, lol. Busted with San Diego, redeemed in New York.
But I wouldn't say Cutler 'redeemed' himself on the Bears either. If anything, he more or less proved that Denver was right to move on from him. Cutler's peak was in Denver. He was relatively average in CHI, never improving upon what he established in Denver.
And Kyle Orton even out-performed Cutler in the following two seasons if we go by Passer Rating. And looking at chain reactions: I look at how the Bears clung to Cutler because "maybe this time it will work" where Denver had free reign to find a real QB eventually via Peyton Manning. Does Denver still go after Peyton if they never rifted with Cutler? Does Chicago instead get involved in the Peyton sweepstakes and make a bid for him?
I'm obviously reaching a bit at that point, but Cutler felt more like an 8 year curse in Chicago because Chicago was convinced year after failed year that the upcoming season was going to be the one where he made all the doubters finally look foolish. But that never came. He might hold some franchise records, but when you look at his competition, you realize how less impressive of a feat any of those are.
It is worth noting that, statistically, Cutler is the best quarterback the Bears have ever had.

System, system, system. If you're a top pick on a poorly coached team with a horrible system that doesn't play to your strengths, you'll be a bust.
Big difference for Young with a terrible team between Tampa's Roster of 2nd and 3rd, or 4th rated backs and WRs and even worse offensive line(and no, that's not a misspelled mistake). And we won't even go to the defense. Then end up in Frisco with the chance to watch and learn from one of the best ever in Joe Montana. And then throwing to possibly one of the best groups of backs and WR ever. From bust to HoF isn't hard when you play with the worst to the 4 time group of Superbowl winning Coaches and players.
*Suggestion: Can you move your stats charts down so we can see the highlights as well at the same time? Other than that, great job, fun and interesting. Especially when you go back to bring up memories from the 70s & 80s games. Yeah I know that gives away my age.

Living in Tampa Bay for 61 years and grew up a Miami Dolphins fan I used to laugh and laugh at the buccaneers quarterback situation they drafted three quarterbacks that went on to win super bowls but with other teams lmfao. Doug Williams Steve Young Trent dilfer. Many more have left in that great success with other teams like Testaverde I think he played like 22 years and I think he went to the AFC championship game I do believe but lost

I would modify the “resigning” criteria. Signing a 1 year extension just to be cut/waived the following year is still a bust.
Rich Gannon bounced around before leading the Raiders to a Super Bowl...he may meet your criteria.

Steve Young is the perfect example of football being a team sport. He was as good with Tampa and he was with the 49ers. But he was on a better team. There are quarterbacks who are great because of the team they are on and “busts” for the same reason.
Im convinced its a mistake to draft a QB in the 1st round. As a rule, it takes qbs a year or 2 to acclimate to the NFL, but when taken in 1st round (and getting 1st round money), players are forced to play right away instead or "red shirting" a year or 2. Combine this with the other inexplicably bizarre rule that the qb MUST play every play, and you see that most 1st round qbs are set up for failure

Alex Smith was a unique case. Dude was called a bust nearly his entire career and played well before Mahomes took over for him
The fact that Manning won with that insane shit show Irsay Sr & Jr ran in Baltimore & Indianapolis is crazy and shows how AMAZING Peyton was, especially his leadership. You can give them a pass on George and Harbaugh, but they ruined Luck and Bert Jones.....no small feat.
Imagine having a QB history of Unitas, B.Jones, Manning, and Luck and having only 2 SB since 1967. 1 of which ( 1971) was so unwatchable a defensive player for the other team won game MVP. The Irsays have had more press conferences while openly drunk then titles and somehow lucked into the best QBs for generations after generation.
They ruined Jones magical arm, Peyton's legacy, and Luck's actual will to play.

Good video, even if I'm not too high on this definition. Dan Marino was an excellent QB: he played for a team that lost games despite this. If they'd never won a playoff game he'd technically be a bust? There's a point where you have to distinguish between individual play & team record.
Here's a perfect example: Tom Brady's playoff winning % in games he threw 3 or more _INTs_ in is higher than Aaron Rodgers' winning % in playoff games *he threw* 3 or more TDs in. So the _team_ busted, not the QB. With all the power of stats, the internet etc. at our fingertips, eventually, over-simplifying things to this extent is gonna annoy people. However, not _most_ people.
Despite what I said, the vast majority of football fans prefer their narratives over facts & Brady _is_ the GOAT to them despite most of his wins being due to defense. 27 teams scored 13 points or fewer in the super-bowl. 25 of those teams lost it.
Brady won both times. 100% due to defense.
This just goes to show where your drafted matters someone "busts" then wins with the 85 Bears or 94 Niners or 80s Raiders. Go figure
Only modern example that was a redemption at QB was Baker Mayfield but he wasn't a bust cause he won a playoff game and had a lot of success in Cleveland before they moved on but after he went to Carolina, got cut, went to the Rams and then Tampa his career looked to be over if he didn't succeed and he did but he was never a bust.
2:02 m personal opinion if the QB takes your team to the playoff's once, twice, or more their not a bust. Especially if by doing so has made the team better then what they were before drafting them. A bust should be what this channel has said here, plus that.
Playing as the QB for Tampa Bay during the Culverhouse era can ruin any QB.

I don't understand why Tannehill is considered better than Mariota. Mariota lead the team to a 9-7 record three years in a row, without Derrick Henry. Tannehill lead them to 9-7 and two playoffs wins. And it was almost completely because of Derrick Henry.
Derrick Henry was drafted in 2017, so Mariota had 2.5 seasons with Henry. Also in the 2019 season, Tannehill didn’t start every game. Mariota went 2-3 and was benched for Tannehill, who went 7-4. Also if Derrick Henry was the reason for Tannehill’s success that season, why couldn’t Mariota win games like Tannehill did? At the end of the day, Tannehill was a solid starter for a decade while Mariota became a backup in 4 years. I’m not the biggest Tannehill fan, but it’s obvious he’s a better QB than Mariota.
Drew Brees Bust at San Diego Chargers??? He was given a franchise tag but that is not really an extension per say. And he is a top 10 QB of all time.

I remember seeing Maddox's highlights or lowlights depending on who you talk to and he was involved with a 2QB system that Dan Reeves installed after Elway got hurt and Maddox was the worst QB out of the 2. Also you mean SB XXIX not 39. 39 was in 2004.

so much for the "the team failed them" narrative. no, the qb fails because they aren't godd enough. coaches do a very good job of evaluating their draft pick (once on the team).
I believe that a team/coach can fail or cause a qb to fail. A good example of this is Jared Goff. If the Rams had stayed with Jeff Fisher instead of switching to Sean Mcvay there is no doubt that Goff would have been a complete bust. Besides Fisher I would put Rex Ryan as well as a few other defensive minded coaches as quarterback career killers.
Mariotta is a bust because he didn't resign with Tennessee, and yes, he did play horribly. He had a losing record overall with Tennessee. You said a player is a bust if they didn't resign with their original team OR never won a playoff game. You don't draft a franchise QB with the #2 pick overall to not play like a franchise QB at some point during their original contract run.

Geno is a great example of this, but he was a 2nd round pick and I only looked at 1st rounders for this, so the criteria could be more rigid.
