2023 Panthers: why you shouldn’t lose 15 games in a season with your first round pick traded
The worst outcome of the 15 win teams is probably Carolina:
- Their last playoff win was the 2015 NFC Championship.
- They went 6-10 in 2016.
- Their last playoff appearance was in 2017 as is their last winning season.
- David Pepper became the owner.
- Several coaches hired and fired since Ron Rivera.
- Bryce Young was drafted and Carolina traded the farm to get him and he’s been awful.

EDIT: There was a scenario that had Carolina starting week 17 with a need to get the 15th win. If they'd lost to the Bucs in Week 17 _and_ Arizona had beaten Seattle to finish 14-2, they would've lost the conference-record tiebreaker to the Cardinals and been #2 in the NFC. As it turned out, neither of those things happened.

It was a close game for a bit. A pass caught Jerricho Cotchery was incorrectly ruled incomplete which would have got the Panthers a first down in the red zone. The call was challenged, but upheld. 2 plays later , Cam gets sacked, fumbles, Broncos recover and get the TD making it 10-0 Denver instead of 7-3 Panthers, had they scored

@@gcgcgcgthis is embarrassing. The ball was jumbling around throughout the process of a catch, first of all. Secondly, it wouldn’t have been in the red zone if the call had gone their way. Thirdly, it’s an awfully bold assumption to say that if the call had gone their way, the panthers would’ve definitely scored. Especially considering, as you said, the Panthers would get strip sacked just a few plays later anyways. Instead of blaming the refs because there was one fairly large play that went against them, you should be blaming Cam Newton for *turning the ball over 3 times, two of which occurred in his own red zone, one of which resulted in a defensive touchdown, all while being held to just 10 points all game*

After watching this video, I was certain this phenomenon could be explained by looking at the % of X win teams that won the super bowl. After all, there should be more 14, 13, 12, etc win teams than 15 win teams, so maybe the % of those teams that won would still be less than the % of 15 win teams that won? Turns out, nobody has won with under 8 wins. 0.53% of teams with 8 wins won the superbowl (it was a strike shortened year). 1.04% of teams with 9 wins won the superbowl. 2.67% of 10 win teams. 8.03% of 11 win teams. 15.18% of 12 win teams. 16.13% of 13 win teams. 40% of 14 win teams. And finally 33.33% of 15 win teams (Also 0% of 16 win teams). Turns out, the 15 team phenomenon still shows up!!! But it definitely looks a little less prominent when looking at the percentages...
That Vikings loss led to the greatest Super Bowl never played Denver vs Minnesota would have been great.

I think they're the only team of those that had beaten every team they played that year. Yeah they may have had two losses but they also beat them at one point as well.
The Steelers also beat the eagles after beating the Patriots.
But you are right they were redeemed the next year so clearly the team had not peaked yet.
Ending the Patriots 21 game win streak was probably my favorite point of that season.

Watching teams start off 13-0 and playing my share of Madden rattling off wins, here is my opinion. The longer you go without losing, it seems you start dreading losing more and more waiting for the other shoe to fall. Starting to get overcautious and second guessing yourself. Getting punched in the mouth a few times and losing gets you to focus up and face your deficiences.

Packers fan here. That Packers team really lived on the edge. They went 15-1 with a pretty bad defense. I think a lot of fans knew a good defensive team like the Giants could be trouble, if the offense had a bad day. The defense could give up 30 to just about anyone.

The decline of these teams is truly stunning. It started out with literally the 2 greatest teams of all time (possibly 1989 49ers also). I find 13 is ironically the lucky number. 13 wins seems to be the best path through, enough to be 1 seed, usually only clinched late to keep you motivated, but enough to learn from after losing 3 or 4 games.

8:25 -- The Titans didn't win the AFC South in 2007. They did make the playoffs as the #6 seed, but finished 3rd in their division, behind the Colts and Jaguars.
Dang it! You are correct. I probably saw while adding up points that the Titans' playoff game took place in 2008 and just looked up the 2008 record (that did win the division). That's what I get for fact-checking at 2am.

A critique to pushing it further toward Jon Bois is maybe find a niche flimsy reason why teams are cursed now and doubling down on it. i.e. Something that only the niners and bears did, a rule change or major event that happened between ‘85 and ‘98, or a quote from a bears guy about winning the Super Bowl that lets you claim he cursed all future 15 win teams.
As an not so superstitious guy I've always thought 13-3 was the sweet spot. Even 14 wins seems like too many to me.

There’s not a lot of 15 win teams (7) so the odds of having none of them win it all isn’t that slim. I think the better argument is teams don’t like to win 15 games cause after 13/14 their bye chances are pretty set in stone and they tend to ease up on the gas.

I don't know how the tiebreakers (and their order) were that season, but something like that can happen this season (and previous past seasons) too.
When comparing teams with the same record, the first aspects to get considered are head-to-head results against tied teams, divisional record if applicable, (i. e. games against the same opponent) and then the conference record. All of that is conference-only, but here's the catch: Sometimes that's not enough and the tie-breakers need to go deeper.
The next one is the "Strength of Schedule". That one essentially adds up all the records from all the opponents the tied teams played against: The idea is that the team with tougher schedule goes through, whereas the team with weaker schedule does not. I assume that in this case, Seattle Seahawks (the #6 seed which Atlanta Falcons needed to jump in the standings) played San Diego at some point during the season while Atlanta Falcons played the Denver Broncos at some point during the season, but not the other way around. If Denver won that game, that's +1 in the Strength of Schedule tie-breaker for Atlanta, whereas if San Diego won that game, it's +1 in the Strength of Schedule for San Diego.
It's very rare for the standings to come down to the Strength of Schedule, but when you're calculating the path to playoffs for a pretty-much-already-eliminated-although-not-mathematically team to go through with 2-3 weeks left, these edge cases actually come up.
@@liborkundrat185in the 2015 season, it would've been impossible for Atlanta and Seattle to both have played AFC West teams, since inter conference play had whole divisions paired up on a 4 year rotation at that point.
But it is probably a strength of record tiebreaker instead of a strength of schedule one, which I'm not entirely sure exactly how SoR works.
Most likely the "Strength of Victory" tiebreaker, i.e. the cumulative record of all teams that a given team defeated in a season. The Vikings beat the Chargers earlier in the season, so the Chargers beating Denver might've improved the Vikings' SOV to the point where the Falcons couldn't overcome it. (If anyone's wondering why the playoff-bound Seahawks were relevant, ATL needed SEA to finish 9-7 in order to set up a 3-way ATL/SEA/MIN tiebreaker, because otherwise MIN would've beaten ATL on head-to-head victory.)
That same season, there was a scenario where the Colts could've won the AFC South with a win + Texans loss + ~8 other results going their way, including a couple of NFC games. The next year, the Bucs had a .0016% chance of making the postseason on SOV with 9 favorable results in other games, including 3 AFC matchups and a Giants-Redskins tie.
The Steelers kept the 10-6 Packers out of the playoffs by winning their last game. I think it affected some other team’s strength of schedule which gave them the edge.

I have a theory that team’s decline in the regular season after blowing out opponents. In several instances, teams such as the Saints in 2018 against the Eagles, the Dolphins last year after blowing out Denver just to name a couple off the top of my head. It’s lead me to a similar hypothetical question to your title: could teams running up the score on their opponents ultimately lead to their downfall later on?
Uses up more energy, plus if you have a rematch against a team you squashed, the opponent won't forget about it! Seems like a good theory. Too bad it doesn't happen with college.

I haven't even watched this video (yet). The title is misleading to me... especially if you're talking about 15 wins in the Regular Season. In the 1984 Season (which was exactly 40 years ago btw), the San Francisco 49ers went 15-1 and won Super Bowl XIX that year (the very first team to ever go 18-1 in a season). The very next year, in the 1985 Season, the Chicago Bears went 15-1 and won Super Bowl XX that year. How is that a bad thing?

I think the real curse comes with the aftermath of the 15 win season, regardless if you finish the job or not in the postseason. The 49ers and Patriots added to their respective dynasties after their big years, though it would take time. Even if Super Bowl 40 was "rigged" I certainly don't think that was the case when the Steelers won Super Bowl 43. The Bears, Vikings, Panthers, and even Packers remain "cursed" in regards to no further Super Bowl titles with only the Bears even reaching the big game since (Super Bowl 41) while the Vikings and Panthers have yet to reach the pro football summit. The Colts resting their starters did get them to Super Bowl 44, though they lost the game. Finally, I still think 15-2 or 16-1 is a worthy comparison in the current era, though I can't wait for 18 game seasons to balance home and road games over the regular season, with appropriate rest for the teams.
If they do 18 game seasons, then they need to get rid of the neutral site games once and for all this time unless division rivals are willing to sacrifice BOTH of their games against each other in the interest of fairness.
PS - CFL has played an 18 game season for DECADES.
PPS - The NFL is really screwing up the 17-game season by not making all 16 extra games a neutral site game (they all don't need to be outside of the country as a Hawaii or Wyoming etc. could host some games), while having teams sacrifice the home game against the wrong team. Only the Vikings this season has their home game against the extra opponent (the Jets) sacrificed.
