It should go without saying this is for stock style transmissions. You can build a TurboGlide(2 speed TH400) with a 1.60 low gear and a 1.0 high gear. The biggest complaint with a PG is the rpm drop.
Totally agree with you on weight - gear - power , and what length track or so on the street your running. Great video thanks for your time and consideration on this subject ! 👍
Power-glides are the best transmissions for people wanting to go fast everyone will say the truck is way to heavy for a power-glide if your converter is spec correctly and gear that truck could fly you could cut a way better 60’ and cutting off in you 1/8 mile and would make your 1/4 drop but never the less can’t go wrong with either transmission
Don't know why anyone would recommend a manual for someone that pretty much does nothing but drag racing. Autos will ALWAYS be faster on the drag strip. Save the manual trans for road courses.
well the reason for that is, both the TH400 and Powerglide are EXTREMLEY durable and they were built for durability. second off, its a whole lot less complex to just run a standard shifter and also its less to break compared to an auto.
I don't blame you on NOT manual swapping Goldie. It comes down to the weight vs power. Most of the LS manual options are more for cars and not our bricks! Would I love to bang gears? Damn right, but not for the cost and possible carnage it causes.
I can answer the ? for everyone why no stick shift in your builds no one can shift as consistently as an automatic trans and before someone says my uncle my cousin or who ever is a bad mother with a stick I understand that but what I am saying is with an automatic it shits at 5,500 every time with a stick you mite think you shift at 5,500 but by the time you shit it it mite be at 5,600 or 5,700 or even fall down on rpms an automatic shifts the same rpm all the time keep up the good work man I love watching your channel
Hi hi all I know is the old man and i go fishing. And I tend to hover over a shift point... He would holler "shift" dummy and the "thump" came... (shift to high)and he was satisfied.
Don't forget power consumption. TH400 consumes considerably more hp vs a Glide. So with a lighter car that obviously you are seeking to be faster with the Glide offers more power to the ground.
im considering getting a powerglid for my 1955 gmc truck mostly just because theres one not far from me for pretty cheap thats freshly rebuilt. but its not a drag or race truck. just an old truck i wanna get driving. maybe something for getting to and from town in thats just getting an older truck back on the road. I've heard tons of stuff both good and bad about them. im still looking around my area though. just looking for some of the cheaper options which at the moment seems to be that power glide. Wonder how it would do in a truck like that haha.
Sloppy Stage 2, BTR Stage 2, really any stage 2 cam. VS Racing billet 7875, 4l80e if you want to street drive the hell out of it, TH400 if you want to be a little more race focused or around town hot rod
Just get that Th400 built correctly and you would be in love with that setup. That 80e just put together right with a shift kit woulda been badass lol. , that’s the perfect combo you have already and will be just fine in the future even with more power.
can someone explain why the majority of fast American drag vehicles with Powerglides and TH400s are not getting destroyed by those with "modern" 8 or 10 speed automatics? Is torque multiplication that much of an advantage?

The weight of the truck with a powerglides 1st gear ratio would make the launch softer l could be wrong and depending on rearend gearing I'm thinking a 3.06 first gear in a 700r4 would be even better for something heavy and a overdrive with a lockup converter for street driving would really save gas and wear and tear on the engine at highway speeds not a big deal at 45 or 50mph but at 65 to 75mph it would make a big difference for cruising using 1,2,3 gears for drag racing using 4 gear and the lockup converter for cruising above 55mph but the powerglide with a high stall converter with 3.73 -4.10 gearing in a car that is 3400 pounds or under should be consistent helping you with launching so you don't have excessive wheel spin off the line of the two cars shown the truck appears to be more streetable the RX7 is more of a drag car weekend cruiser fun car both are nice l really like the truck from my experience heavy vehicles don't have near the traction problems 4000+ pounds that cars that are 2500-3500 pounds have
For my personal preference, its a bad idea. I like manuals in smaller sporty cars that handle well. Or dump trucks. Dump trucks are a lot of fun to drive lol
My coworker ran a small block powerglide in his 69 Chevelle dominated but he ran street light to street light. This was back in 80’s. Time to build a 6.0 L for Goldy turbo 400 is ready for that💪🏼
I just built a powerglide and put that and a customer PTC converter in my s475 5.3 trans am. Best choice I ever made I went from a jegs stall with a th350 to this... from 16 psi to 12 psi.. I went a half a second faster in the 8th and 4mph faster. WITH LESS BOOST! But I agree a glide doesn’t belong in that truck... you need the gear advantage. I’m starting my own channel man!. Build A 4L65E Right with all new bushings and check all the clearance's and you will have a transmission that will work great and last.
Agreed!
Got me good on the intro lol. Nice one
I think I remember something about the powerglide being not that parasitic. On a lighter vehicle.... it may be a little better for building boost.
Who, what, when, where, why, how? Make that truck run right finally
Serious question. So would a turbo 400 work in a heavy car? One thats like 3526lbs. Or just go with a 4l80e?
Yeah, it would work great. I believe ATI recommends a PG in vehicles less than 3300 pounds
