I've driven a lot of GM cars from the 70's and my favorite transmission is the turbo 350. I would only use the turbo 400 on an extreme build, like a drag car. Even though they might seem similar from the names, they drive totally different, turbo 400's can feel kind of heavy and clunky, 350's are smooth. Also, just for amusement, if you happen to knock your car into reverse while driving down the street, the 400 and 350 react totally differently. The 400 will lock your wheels up and kill the engine immediately, the 350 will kill the engine if you don't give it any gas, but if you give it some gas it will start spinning the wheels in reverse.
Actually we had a 400 turbo my friend had in a 72 cutlass 455 engine hit reverse hammering it and we went sideways and the tires were spinning backwards.didnt tear the trans up either

Man these cars are pigs so I'm curious to see how well the glide works for you. It probably would have been easier to just say that by the time you configured the th400 to work well for your setup then you would have ended up with a turboglide. Way more practical to just go with the powerglide so I'm glad to see this.
What power range do you think necessitates a swap to a glide from a 400? I'm building a turbo ls foxbody, somewhere around 900hp for track use. I haven't picked a trans yet but was debating on 400 or glide.
John you've definitely gotten more knowledgeable about Drag racing stuff since your early Drag radial video !! Keep up the good work.. I'm planning on running a 4L80E cause I daily my F-body so I like having OD ! 🇺🇸🦅🏁
when running the 1/4 mile in the cow what differences will you see going from the TH400 to the glide? Like does the glide hit your max rpm sooner, because I am thinking you will hit high gear or 1:1 sooner in the glide than in the TH400. Just curious. By the 1/4 mile the TH400 is stretched pretty far in the cow I would imagine so just seeing if the glide is more suited for 1/8 mile passes for you.
Also Powerglide take about half the power to turn compared to a TH400. But I have the TH400 in my 12’ Camaro with a centrifugal supercharger. I do not have as much power off the hit as a proper turbo setup.
Small tire nitrous and on no prep, glide all the way. Small tire on prepped/glued track I’d go th400. Anything bigtire I’d go th400. But for street strip, glide with a gear vendor overdrive. But I could never see making a 2 speed out of a th400 or “turbo-Glide”. Just not worth the extra weight to me. Unless you have big power and big tire on shitty surface. Even then though.
At what power level do you feel either changing 1st gear in the 400 or going with a glide is necessary? Excited to see how much better the COW leaves, suspension dialed in & Glide should be quite a big improvement since she likes to Hit those tires hard!
I have a single turbo coyote and want to do a TH400 swap, I only plan to be 1000hp at most and drive it pretty regularly. What would you recommend I do TH400 or get a stage 3 of my factory trans?
I have several questions, if anyone responds please like my comment otherwise I won't see your response. Why choose a 2 speed transmission over a 6 speed? What makes the 2 speed transmission more ideal? Why is he able to shift the automatic transmission by hand? Isn't having more gear sets, or in this case, transmission speeds more ideal so you can stay at peak horsepower longer before shifting?
The stall speed of the converter is what keeps you in the power band... A built powerglide is more for racing then the street... You can shift all automatic transmission if you want to.
Since you said make a comment if you have any questions I guess i'll drop one in here because i'm just curious what you think. I'm a young car enthusiast that's trying to make his dreams a reality and trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I'm building a pro touring setup 1970 Chevelle that's going to be setup for autocross, but i'm going to be putting a twin turbo 6.0ls in it so it should be at least 1k hp, I also plan on driving it a lot and maybe taking it down the strip once or twice. I'm leaning towards powerglide but am just curious what your opinion is since you're much more knowledgeable than me
I have a 1967 impala with 327 and a powerglide and i can tell u the powerglide is great cus u can launch and wind 1st gear waaaaaay out then 1 shift n ur in 2cnd and thats it n it just keeps going in 2cnd!
Most GM cars in the 60s had powerglides.. I had a few of them... just because you can wind it out in 1st gear doesn't make it fast.. it feels like it but it's not... I am running a powerglide in a BBF foxbody nitrous car with a 5000 stall... have to hit second gear 200ft out.
I heard one advantage of a non-lockup converter is that they can handle more horsepower and torque than lockup ones 🤔. Nothing necessarily wrong with a non-lockup converter.
Why is it that a stock transmision. U drive it 5 10 years. Then u rebuild no how much u pay. A month to 3 month its broke what ingeneers are smarter or. Trans shops out to make $
Well the glide is a perfectly streetable trans gm ran many versions of it up till 64-65 whn the norm turbo hydro came out chevy had the power glide till 65-66 and for some cars even after tht due to da turbo hydro being a option altho some companies like pontiac buick caddy ran either a 3 speed or some even a 4 speed roto hydro trans till early mid 60s...some even had a "dual range" roto hydro trans which changes the shift points in the trans due to usein diff fliud passages.....honestly its about one gear/tires and how many times you wanna shift....a turbo hydro either the th350 th375 th400 ll have to be shifted twice where as a glide just once.....and as you said has a longer first gear allowin you to pull further i the power curve before shifts.....
Subscribed. :) What I am curious about is the difference between a PG and launching a TH400 in 2nd gear. Having a 1.51:1 2nd gear in the TH400 brings you down into PG territory. Are there any cons to launching a TH400 in 2nd?
I want to put one on my my 280zx with my 350. My rear ended is 3.9 so I need less reduction on first so I feel like the powerglide would be a better option.
John thanks for all the great vids. What stall size r u running and what are you launching at generally? Also - if you use a 2 step which is part of the question above are you WOT on launch and letting the 2 step hold you.
I have a OBS short, wide regular cab truck. I got it down to 3200lbs. The interior is stripped with one aluminum plate for gauges and two aluminum seats. Truck is back halfed with a 9in ford with ladder bars. Rear adjustable shocks. The roll cage runs from the rear frame over the axle through the cab and runs out to the front frame horns. No inter fenders. The frame has holes drilled for weight. Still running stock front suspension. That’s about to change. I’m installing light weight A-arm and I plan to remove the front and side glass and go with Optic Armor. This should get me close to 3050-3100lbs. Running a big cubic inch SBC with a Built Power Glide. Truck best time is in the 6:50’s in the 1/8th mile. It has a 4:56 gear, so the power glide really helps me get off the line before having to shift and upset the truck. I’m hoping going with lighter front suspension and using Optic Armor I can get in the 6:30’s. That’s pretty good for a full size truck that’s all steel but the hood. I’m a big fan of the Power Glide even for street driving. My truck makes enough power that I don’t need a low first gear to get moving. Plus I have the 4:56 rear gear.. I had several people tell me you can’t run a Power Glide on something over 3000lbs. It’s all about setup and gearing. My truck was setup to race 1/8 mile. I can’t run down the interstate at 80mph for long distances. But at drag and drives I hope to cruise at 55-60mph. I’m excited to try anyway. Great video, sometimes I feel the Power Glides get a bad wrap, but it’s because guys don’t have them setup right. 🇺🇸🦅🏁🛻
I have an FTI TH400 and matching FTI 3600 stall converter (to keep it somewhat streetable) and love it. Highly, highly recommend FTI! Though with my new combo I’m likely to run into a somewhat similar situation you’re in and may have to switch to a glide. But if I do, I’m putting a gear vendors unit (has been plan for the 400, but haven’t done it yet) behind it and turn that 2 speed into 4speed, sorta;)

I owned a 71 Vega with a 283 4B and a 2 speed Powerglide and LOVED IT. It's a great street tranny. I am not sure of these new versions but the originals like I had could also be pushed started. 👍
I’m building a 3200lb road car with a tubular rear chassis. 1200 rwhp and a BTE glide. Hope it’s good. The NZ champ prefers a th400 because he loads it up in top.
I have a Honda s2000 with a tranzilla right now and I drive on the street a good amount. I've been thinking about th400 or power glide swapping. I have 800-900 horse, 9000rpm Redline and 2600 pounds of rice. What do you guys think would be "best"?
So powerglide is same on street as th400??? Same final drive? And its better at the strip? = less shifts easier to drive? And its lighter than th400??? So powerglide is the way to go........ And it's cheaper.............
The only Powerglide I owned was in a '65 Bel Air with a 230 6. All I could say was WTF. My understanding of Powerglides at the time was that they had a 1.76 first gear. Was that wrong?
I have run T400s for years with zero breakaqge..I am building 2 new cars and plan to use nitrous at the launch...every trans co that I talk to has a different opinion..1 car will be about 3000#, the other..2600#...suggestions?

Not rocket science that power glide has less mechanical parts less to move = more power to the road 🤯 really wouldn’t recommend for a daily but let’s face it how many of these street cars aka almost might as well be a pro mod are daily driven.🤭I think it’s a smart move in the right direction to put all that moo power to the road I mean track or road that is a track....merica 🇱🇷🇵🇷

John you've definitely gotten more knowledgeable about Drag racing stuff since your early Drag radial video !! Keep up the good work..
I'm planning on running a 4L80E cause I daily my F-body so I like having OD ! 🇺🇸🦅🏁
Th350 here. Freakshow converters. About to build this trans to hold 1000+hp
RBMODS - what’s it in?
@@aliksykes4521 right now stock gear set. With green clutches, and kevlar band. Dont know if I am going to go glide or not man.
Could you have launched the 400 in second gear and got similar results as the powerglide?
Yes you can they make a valve body that will let you leave off the brake in every gear its like 400 buck at jegs.
You could but then the ratio is way off so it won't launch or pull as hard !
when running the 1/4 mile in the cow what differences will you see going from the TH400 to the glide? Like does the glide hit your max rpm sooner, because I am thinking you will hit high gear or 1:1 sooner in the glide than in the TH400. Just curious. By the 1/4 mile the TH400 is stretched pretty far in the cow I would imagine so just seeing if the glide is more suited for 1/8 mile passes for you.
Manual, no converter issues. Run an over under and you can do a 1st into over with a switch, then go to third and then 3rd over again with the switch.
The answer is "it depends" because its a loaded question. You cant answer it without being more specific about the application
General rule of thumb is not to go with pg until you have at least 550 hp in a big block.
Toby Bielat u dont need a big block u idiot if u have a turbo or nitrous or supercharger
Gsfbffx Pdhhdf chill bud
@Gsfbffx Pdhhdf why you gotta bash the guy You 🤡
Why not just launch in 2nd on the th400
Wouldnt that be the same as changing to a glide??
I have a single turbo coyote and want to do a TH400 swap, I only plan to be 1000hp at most and drive it pretty regularly. What would you recommend I do TH400 or get a stage 3 of my factory trans?
Out of all the big transmission companies who’s best? Chasing a 1500-2000hp powerglide 💪🏼
I'm a young car enthusiast that's trying to make
his dreams a reality and trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I'm building a pro touring setup 1970 Chevelle that's going to be setup for autocross, but i'm going to be putting a twin turbo 6.0ls in it so it should be at least 1k hp, I also plan on driving it a lot and maybe taking it down the strip once or twice. I'm leaning towards powerglide but am just curious what your opinion is since you're much more knowledgeable than me
When you are driving it on the street a lot the th400 with a lock up torque converter is the way you want to go.
Both are good aslong as thier not automatic....kickdown cable on a carb is just asking for meltdowns and 400 A/T is asking for a hot cabin
Trans shops out to make $
I have a 91 camaro running a 2 speed power glide I am having a hard time finding a driveshaft for it any suggestions?
I running a th400 in my 3300lb, will it be cheaper to just shortening my first gear or just do a powerglide?
Which is better? Whichever one will help you Stay Toned. That's the real answer.
7:00 close your legs who’re 😂
Do you have to swap a engine frame on a 90 Camaro rs that has a v6 to install a 454 big block
You can go faster longer with the 400 with 308 gear the 2 speed is allready tapped out
So which transmission made the car run faster ,quicker ?? At the track ??
Yeap, a old buddy of mine had a 64 Malibu with a straight 6 and a glide from the factory. Definitely Street able
The powerglide was never good for anything....!
Manual valve body recommendations for the glide? P/t quick release?
So I scored an older PG, I have a 02 trans am. Can I use my stock ecu, pcm ?
How about the rear end gear ratio with the power glide, will you need to change the ratio now?
can't wait to take my son out to lunch and dinner next week....
And that has what to do with this video? I'm now hungry.
@@PNW_Car_Mods I believe Steve is saying he's John's daddy!! LMAO
Jon, you got a 5.3 and a powerglide for sale? I'm looking for one for a skyline build.
Depends on the HP and the gears in the rearend
Subscribed. :) What I am curious about is the difference between a PG and launching a TH400 in 2nd gear. Having a 1.51:1 2nd gear in the TH400 brings you down into PG territory. Are there any cons to launching a TH400 in 2nd?
Yes the converter is wrong or at least not ideal and likely rear gearing is wrong.
1.48 first gear ratio, what’s your rear end ratio ? Would love the help ! Thanks man, keep up the great content #LSNasty
I have a 1.58 first for my race car and it’s a 3.50 rear gear
I want to put one on my my 280zx with my 350. My rear ended is 3.9 so I need less reduction on first so I feel like the powerglide would be a better option.
What trans do you think will fit best in a twin turbo around 1000 HP setup ??
Both can be built for 1kHP that's the problem....
John thanks for all the great vids. What stall size r u running and what are you launching at generally?
Also - if you use a 2 step which is part of the question above are you WOT on launch and letting the 2 step hold you.
So is a th400 good for a daily driver
Who in TF did your subtitles???
What about a 400 glide.best of both worlds
Good choice on the glide! I’m running a 1.80 Reid Cased Glide with a Pro Mod Gear Vendors I It. Best of both worlds!
John, keep doing your thing Bro 👊🏽
Man I emailed you. 2 days ago!
If you want a powerglide but have a th400, just take off in 2nd lol.
👍 great content lots of good information here keep it up good luck on the track.
I have. 68. Camaro w a. Powerglide. It. Had. 6. Cyl. Now. It. Has. ,350. I. Was. Going. To .change. To. A. 400. Turbo. But. Now. I'm. Thinking. Change. The. Converter. What. Conv.

I’m trying to build a Chevy Colorado with a turbo LS and I want to go with a powerglide…. My question is the rear end ratio….. what’s a good ratio with a glide? 3.73? 3.55? I’ll be running probably a 28-29” tire. Maybe a 30” 🤔🤷♂️ Thanks
I owned a 71 Vega with a 283 4B and a 2 speed Powerglide and LOVED IT. It's a great street tranny. I am not sure of these new versions but the originals like I had could also be pushed started. 👍
😎🇺🇸Hey Buddy 👍 Great stuff as always! very informative ✌️🤙
Will your car be at SGMP Lights Out this week?
We will not be at lights out
I’m building a 3200lb road car with a tubular rear chassis.
Running a PG behind my Big Block 9.Oh Ford engine. using 1.76 Straight cut gears. I'm building my own trans :-)
The only Powerglide I owned was in a '65 Bel Air with a 230 6. All I could say was WTF. My understanding of Powerglides at the time was that they had a 1.76 first gear. Was that wrong?
Power Glide all day long.
I have run T400s for years with zero breakaqge..I am building 2 new cars and plan to use nitrous at the launch...every trans co that I talk to has a different opinion..1 car will be about 3000#, the other..2600#...suggestions?
I usually use a late model cd009 pr tr6060 in my builds because I am either drifting or coarse racing. I was just curious what a powerglide was.
I loved my Powerglide in my 68 Chevelle in high school, neutral lock out, Hurst shifter ,trans cooler...man 76mph pop that bad boy into second and them 295 50 series Bf's would squak .Drove it daily for almost 4 years and it took everything a teenager could throw at it and I was destroying 5speed cobras and 400s all day. This was late 90s early 00s here in Vegas with extreme heat no issues, its amazing how much more they have improved the parts for it nowadays back in the day you just made sure you had neutral lockout and pray Lol im 41 now and still swear by powerglide to this day.great video great explanation 👍
1.76 first gear
Not rocket science that power glide has less mechanical parts less to move = more power to the road 🤯 really wouldn’t recommend for a daily but let’s face it how many of these street cars aka almost might as well be a pro mod are daily driven.🤭I think it’s a smart move in the right direction to put all that moo power to the road I mean track or road that is a track....merica 🇱🇷🇵🇷
short answer. th400
I have a original power glide in my 71 c10 can I mount my 5.3 to it??? If so I have a torque converter from a ls3 6 speed combo can I use it???
I wanna build a gasser
I’m rolling with a th350 in my foxbody. Honestly love it. Making 550hp in a sbc and with 4.10 gears and 3 speed reverse manual valve body. It’s very streetable.
Brendan McCarthy th350 is a 4 speed u idiot

Ok so is there a way to use a powerglide with stock computer on a 4.8l ls? I have been told I have to have the trans deleted and the computer reburnt?.
Can we get an updated video of this? Now that you seem to run a 2 speed 400 more frequently
I know most people have their own opinions of how to do it. But how did you do go about burnouts with the th400 at the track? Burnout started in 2nd then shift to 1st once at the line? Or start in first and quick bump to 2nd to finish. then back to 1st at the line?
Most of the big high hp big name guys that I know of run a th400. A lot use the turbo glide style which makes the th400 basically the same ratio as the powerglide but in general the TH400 is a stronger unit.
