I have installed beadboard on a numerous porch ceilings. I have never run it perpendicular to the front of the house. I always go lengthwise to the porch for aesthetics.
How would they have made adjustments if the 2 sides didn't match up midway through install? How would they cut in light fixtures? These are the helpful things that are missing in this video.
If the ceiling starts going at an angle then you'd put a tiny shim between the beadboard on one side. That would help make the ceiling square again. It would also create a gradually widening gap, but you wouldn't notice it from the porch, especially after it's painted.
King OfSunnyvale haha I saw that right away also. But... gosh I hate tradesmen are always playing Mr. expert and nitpicking as if they make no mistakes! Haha
You have to provide nailing surface all four sides around the light box so maybe some additional framing. Then you can nail off the cut pieces with no problem.
I like how that first nail through the tongue moved the whole board. Next time expect that and pull it farther out so it corrects itself! Or just face nail it!
I don't suppose someone could tell me what they used to nail up the bead board. Brad? Finish? Would staples be the better way to go for an application like this?
I can do that!! What I want to see is how you fit the final pieces incase they're not parallel to existing porch trim board. Also, what about the details fitting the overhead light fixture?? C'MON!!!
Definently would have painted the boards before installing them. I also would have checked to make sure they were square to the house with a 3,4,5 triangle. Also I would have left visable marks as to each joist location.
Lack of information. How did he square the center line if the room itself is not square? How is he keeping the boards stray if the ceiling is high on one side compare to the rest?
Why oh why are all the Ask This Old videos cut short nowadays? Never do they show the finished job anymore. The bodged first nail should not have been shown. Bring back Norm please.
would like to have seen the finished product....and how they put up the support straps....these vids are too short and leave out important info If you're really trying to do this yourself.......they are more like an AD for them selves
What about the finished product, why would you do that. I'm not watching this channel anymore, you just want us to view the UA-cam adds to make money for you. Don't really care about complete content. Bye bye for good.
really would have liked to see the finished product and how the areas around the lights were tackled.
Sorry, but on this channel they don't do that.
There's a link in the description to the whole episode on their website.
This thing I ordered is not bad www.amazon.com/gp/mpc/A3MGZHBCGI80GD
*Yup we all saw it slide off the line*

Question: what to do if you need to replace a couple bad boards in the MIDDLE without redoing the whole ceiling?
It depends on the ceiling joists. The bead board has to be installed perpendicular to the ceiling joists.

Carefully take out bad board. Rip the back side of groove off new board and face nail.
Thank you Old house for getting me through these tough times!

His first slid at least 3/16ths off his mark when he nailed it...

What happens when Tom is not there.
Saw that too. He should have used something thin as a shim while he nailed that first one.
Glad someone else caught it too.
You didn't cover what to do at the light fixture. I would have loved to see how that was tackled.

These videos are only ever one-tenth of the actual content
What size nails did you use? I have a similar project to do.
Dang! We are starting this project right now! Great timing!
Good luck. Try not to move your first board when driving the nail!
Can bead board be placed directly over a plywood based exterior ceiling? If so, how would it be done? Thank you for any advice you may offer.
Should have showed the finish project. Would love to see how they cut around the octagon box
T.O.H IS CHANGING AND WE DONT LIKE IT
Very informative thanks 🙏 also what about cutting out the ceiling fan box
Putting in the first nail probably set it back 1/16 of an inch. A lot when going a long distance.
How did you squared it off the house that center mark of the casing?
What type of nail? Are there non rust types for exterior nail gun use?
I use stainless steel. If you are trim nailing use some liquid nails or other adhesive
Removed vinyl ceiling do I need to remove plywood before installing tongue and groove to the ceiling patio or can I install over plywood
I like how that first nail through the tongue moved the whole board. Next time expect that and pull it farther out so it corrects itself! Or just face nail it!
Joshua Smith yeah, they should have face nailed the back of the board first
“I’m just going to mail through the tongue”
*board moves a whole half inch*
what size nail gun? what type of nails?
Just the boards that touch the wall need room for expansion?
What are the purpose for the furry strips
I don't suppose someone could tell me what they used to nail up the bead board. Brad? Finish? Would staples be the better way to go for an application like this?
18 gauge brad nails 1 1/2 inch.
You'll need a nail gun that fits that as well.
@@josiahamaze ....should be stainless steel as well......expensive tho!
Beautiful
Is it possible to connect two Tongue and grove boards that do not meet at the center of a stud?
Don't do that. Instead revise the lengths so they meet at the center of a stud.
I can do that!! What I want to see is how you fit the final pieces incase they're not parallel to existing porch trim board. Also, what about the details fitting the overhead light fixture?? C'MON!!!
Ceiling battens should be no greater than 450mm apart and boards should be glued when secret nailing.
Have this on my 1920s porch ceiling still in good shape.
Laser level or string line every 5th board...
What size and type of nails/brads did you use?
16 or 18 ga ?
Where can you buy the beadboard ?
Definently would have painted the boards before installing them. I also would have checked to make sure they were square to the house with a 3,4,5 triangle. Also I would have left visable marks as to each joist location.
No one cares what you think!
@@PE9A3p4hUfwv That is only because you are an amateur that knows nothing about carpentry.
would be nice to see the whole video and not a commercial
What is the reason for never showing us the finished project?

When job is noce to see
The time is short
Hi. Does anybody have any photos of a lean to they have built please? Need some ideas. Thanks
Isn’t this tongue and groove boards ?
Hi to the reflection of the audio person.
uh what's beadboard??? tandg???
You know a person has to be petty to down vote a video that's been posted for less than a minute.
@Joe Kinchicken You're welcome sonny. You need all the wisdom you can get youngin.
😃👍🏻👊🏻
Now this is so weird. Where is the finish??
Pointless if you don't show the finished project

cc cc bye!
Time consuming and a neck breaker. I say that because I have a worn C5 & C6.
People always here crying because they didn't get to see it finished. Boo Hoo.😭
Isn't that the point of a project? It does me no benefit to see someone cut and nail up a few boards.
The point of the video is to show how to do it. If you want to see a completed project a quick Google search will help.
Thumbs down, not showing the finished product yet again
This profile gauge can be used .......omg go away
Would be nice to see the whole project rather then just the start. Seriously considering unfollowing TOH. :-(
These are not worth watching anymore.
Where Tommy
looks like crap...
