    (4:39) Always nail at an angle! It's called a toenail and it is actually used to draw in the materials tight

    You say you hadn't planned for the variation in color, but that's what caught my attention. Now I want to vary the color when I do my t&g ceiling in my cabin. Thank you!

    I always wondered when I looked up at beautiful wooden slat soffits I could never see any nails. No nail heads how the heck are those things staying up haha now I know thank you for revealing the secret of putting the nails in the tongue side so they don't interfere with the groove side attachments thanks again one of life's mysteries for me has been solved can't thank you enough really good video appreciate your teaching technique

      The T&G attaches to the rafters so they run the whole length of the porch roof.

    So. Good! The stain variations really bring out the beauty of the wood. Can you give a rough number on the budget for this project?

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you! For the T&G, trim, caulk and stain I think it was about $500. My porch isn’t very big so it kept the materials cost down. The light added about $200 to the total cost.

    The stain actually isn’t anything you did wrong, it’s just a step missed. Pine absorbs stain very patchy just like yours, unless you use a pre-stain primer. You can usually find them in the same section at Home Depot where you get your stain. If you use it first, your pine will take on a more uniform color. All in all though, I agree with you. In this instance, the natural variations in color absorption are attractive!

    Pine needs to have pre stain conditioner applied before staining.

    I love the different coloring. How did you get that? Did you do different color stains or paints? What kind and size of wood did you get? Thanks for answers,

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому

      Thanks! The color variation was a mistake that I ended up really liking. I didn’t mix the stain enough and the batches came out different shades. You could replicate this with two different colors.
      The tongue and groove boards are 12 foot 1x4s. I have all the specifics on my blog post here theunprofessional.com/how-to-install-a-tongue-and-groove-ceiling/

      Why not try WATCHING THE VIDEO, she mentioned more than once that she stained the wood herself and that the color variation was unintentional. Lazy people, I tell you!

    Really beautiful project! ... and so FAST!
    I couldn't see in time lapse -
    in addition to applying adhesive and toenailing the end pieces of each board, did you also toenail the tongue and groove to the 2 rafters down the middle of the porch or just use adhesive only on the middle sections of each tongue and groove board?

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому

      Thank you!! Yes, I nailed into each rafter. There is a small section right above the door that I wasn’t able to reach, but otherwise I hit all four rafters on each T&G board.

    Wow you did a great job! Can this Tongue N Groove board be used under the eaves too? 👍🏼

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  3 роки тому

      Thanks! Yes, it would work for eaves. I might look a little harder for fir boards though if there’s a lot of rain exposure. Or do a few coats of waterproof sealer on both sides. I don’t get a lot of moisture under my porch so the pine has held up great. No warping whatsoever.

    In a new construction project, I have ceiling joists in two directions (90 degrees from each other on the "wings" of a six sided shop). (6 sided because a previous owner had a fancy slab poured behind the pool and never installed whatever they had in mind so it was an available slab I wasn't going to use for anything. So I can install a bead board ceiling in one of two orientations. Any rule of thumb that you might be aware of, on what orientation would be best from the perspective of someone entering the project by the front door? From the front door the building is wider left to right than it is deep. My wife suggested a ceiling just like the one in your video, so thank you!

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  3 роки тому

      Hmmm good question and hard to say with out seeing it. My first thought is to go in the direction that works best your lumber. Both to maximize your material and because I prefer one board across rather than piecing multiple together. Otherwise, I don’t know of a rule that says one way is better than another. Good luck!

    Could you do this inside without sheetrock for a living room ceiling?

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  3 роки тому

      Yes definitely! Tongue and groove looks great inside and the process is pretty much the same. Just make sure you are attaching to the joists and you’ll be fine. Good luck!

    Hello, just want to ask how has the wood been holding up? Saw a bunch of these vids and most use cedar but it’s so expensive. I want to do this to my porch ceiling and want to use pine since it’s less expensive.

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому +2

      It’s held up great so far. This is the second winter. The ceiling is pretty protected though so it doesn’t get a lot of exposure to rain or snow. I wanted to use for originally but couldn’t find it locally. I used a weatherproof stain and made sure to coat each piece well on both sides and the cut ends. Good luck!

    For the lights just measure to the edges and put the boards together on your saw horse and find the center you can cut them all at the same time

    How did the last piece of tongue and groove work for install? I'm always worried about a gap at the end.

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому +1

      I had a small gap that was covered up by trim. I think that is always the case, in fact, there should be a very small gap for expansion. All this is hidden by trim typically. You may need to use a table saw on the first and last pieces so the distribution is even. Good luck!
