A couple corrections since I've gotten a lot of comments about them: 1. Yes, it turns out the triangle song (titled, no joke, Tra Le La Le La Triangle) is a real song by Patsy Cline! I'm a dummy who didn't even think to look it up before making the video 😭 2. I somehow forgot to include Mo Mashkour and Frankie and Hunter Hollingsworth in my character list. No idea how that happened, they must have just slipped by me. 3. Alexz Johnson's name is pronounced 'Alex' not 'Alexis.' Putting a Z at the end of Alex made my brain short circuit. edit: 4. This isn't really something I'm correcting, but since I've gotten a lot of comments about it, the reason I didn't include Yael when talking about Jewish characters is that I don't recall them being Jewish ever being explicitly mentioned on the show (correct me if I'm wrong!) and I was talking specifically about explicit, canonically Jewish characters. There's nothing wrong with having a solely ethnically/casually Jewish character imo, but given the lack of meaningful Jewish rep on the show it would've been nice to have actual storylines concerning that! Anytime I mention it to anyone, I get weird looks like it’s something people don’t talk about. Definitely makes me sad knowing people don’t have the same love for it. (Also, I didn’t watch it until I was ~20. I know my mom had episodes on our old DVR, but I don’t remember much about what I did watch when I was younger except it was after Jimmy became wheelchair bound.) My partner and me actually binge watched the series together up until the last of the OG cast finished their run. He’s a few years older than me, so that’s the run he grew up with. I was going through high school when the season 10-ish cast was coming in, and retrospectively had more of a link to that era. (Though I fully respect both, and they both hold a special place in my heart.) With all that being said, the series as a whole is absolutely one of my comfort shows now. Which is absolutely absurd with how much chaos it is based around, lol.

I think it might intentional. Degassi tends to do alot of parallel/analog characters that share similar traits and get similar storylines. Like Caitlin/Emma/Ellie/Clare, Rick Munro DJH/Sean/Zig, Manny/Alli, Joey/JT/Craig. Eli and Craig also share similarities. I'm pretty sure it's intentional

You forgot to acknowledge KC’s relationship with his coach. That was a great portrayal of a a teacher taking their power dynamic and forcing him to break up with Claire, hook up with a hooker, drunk, and even wanting to watch him hook up with Jenna.
Ooof that was one that was hard to watch. One thing I liked about it was the different angle it took to the teacher sexually abusing a student situation. Most of them were “student gets crush on teacher, tries to pursue it, gets shut down at first, but then the teacher gives in to their attraction”, which is of course a dangerous situation, but also one that’s really generic and easy to write. The whole thing with KC’s coach was less cut-and-dry. It was all stuff that you know was uncomfortable and wrong without the coach directly trying to hook up with him. Like some combination of vicarious sexual gratification through watching KC do things and likely through the power he had over him, as well as seemingly grooming him to the point of accepting sexual advances. It’s possible that the coach really did just want to get his rocks off by watching (that’s definitely a kink), but I’d also believe he was trying to manipulate KC into eventually accepting sexual advances from him. Like he was testing the waters. “Okay, he’ll let me help him get laid. Let’s try pushing it further and see if he’ll watch porn, drink a beer, spend the night. Okay, he’ll do that, let’s make him afraid by showing him the gun. Now he’s scared, can I push him to have sex with a hot woman? If I can do that, can I get him to agree to a threesome? And after that having sex with me?” I’m glad the coach was arrested and all, but I agree with others that I wish we’d looked at the details and aftermath a little more, instead of just the harrassment. Taking a closer look at the trauma KC experienced from the situation, mostly; while I think explaining what the coach was trying to do and what the red flags were would be good, too, I think the harrassment in itself was pretty clearly all a red flag.
I am so torn on the Craig/Marco thing. On one hand, I was waiting for it!! On the other hand, I liked that it showed that a gay guy and a straight guy can be close affectionate friends without it turning into a romance which I think is a good message. It was just weird that they went as far as having them kiss for no reason.
Marco kissed Craig in a desperate way to show Dylan that he, Marco, was over him, prompting an iconic line from Craig: "So when in doubt, you kiss Craig?!"

The actor who played Declan, Landon Liboiron starred in The Howling Reborn, where he played a Werewolf. With Lindsay Shaw from Ned’s Declassified. Although the Howling Reborn was very much made to cash in on Twilight. There’s also an Episode in Season 9 where the character Clare writes vampire fiction living out her crush on Declan, and I’m sure that was also Twilight inspired on the part of the writers.

I think one thing that absolutely should be talked about is the fact that Degrassi is CANADIAN and didn’t feature a single indigenous character or storyline in its run (to my knowledge). Completely bonkers how they let that happen.
I completely agree! As I said in a different comment, they had a few indigenous actors over the course of the show, but they never made those characters canonically indigenous. I would hope that if there's ever another Degrassi show they would explore that!
Degrassi does really seem like one of those hazy nostalgic shows. Like the whole thing felt like a fever dream in my youth and now I could tell you every single character arc of the show like 15 years later.

My favorite piece of ridiculousness in this show is when the female characters scream out at their male interests that they are pregnant, without so much as taking an at home pregnancy test. Like my girl make sure before you add this extra chaos to your life
I agree - Eli calling Clare a “whore” was one of the nastiest and most shocking moments for me. I understand at this point Eli was in rage over Clare cheating and believing she’s pregnant with Drew’s baby, but Eli as a character is very progressive and would never have referred to any girl as a whore, especially Clare. Later Eli says he wouldn’t have done that if he had known the baby was his, as if that even matters? He called her a whore for cheating with Drew after he cheated on Clare with Lenore because he “missed her so much”. Eli cheating was out of character for him anyway...I don’t know where they were going with that “whore” moment with Eli, but it made me disappointed in the writers and his character.
Did she even cheat? Didn't she break up with him before she slept with Drew? And yeah I agree, Eli would never call any girl, let alone his soul mate, a whore.
THIS like they both cheated?? love them both but whoever wrote this for their characters was probably dealing with something similar and projected it on the Clare and Eli because i would have never ever see this path for them.

Oh! My biggest "Ok, Degrassi" was the way they handled addiction. It was always hooked, destruction, recovery in the span of 3 episodes. As a recovered addict it was almost insulting. Like they didn't even research what certain drugs did. Despite going over opiates, meth, coke, alcohol and shrooms they still managed to make weed seem like the absolute worse

In alot of aspects when it comes to storytelling the fact that the episodes are usually 20+ minutes can hurt the show. It would be much better if the episodes were an hour long cause then they would be able to flesh out the stories more
And also yeah they always seemed to villainize weed and wouldn't go for much more harder drugs that can actually be harmful. If they can cover shit like SA, bigotry and abuse I'm pretty sure they can handle much harder drugs then weed

What’s wild to me is watching from a perspective without socialized medicine, and seeing how much having Canadian healthcare actually impacts the plot, seeing characters be able to realistically stay in hospital while stilll having support from school and the ability to stay in long term full time care is wild to me every time that happened
The "Shark in the Water" hype back in 2010 was unreal. I've been watching Degrassi since 2001 and the passion for the show began dying down around seasons 7-9. But the interest for Degrassi as it was basically revived in front of our own eyes made the music video a mascot in the community. I don't there's ever been a better marketing decision made by tv creators.
As a Canadian teen in the 2010’s the seasons they did the telenovela format were the absolute GOAT. Looking back a lot of those arcs were hot trash piles of filler content but oh boy did I love having a new Degrassi every day.
halfway through - cam was a seriously amazing representation of depression, how mental health is isolating, and the escalation of it all. we see him start, sad, but in the kind of shy teenager way. he starts to make friends and get into relationships, but realistically he’s still depressed. he begins to (tw) self harm, with the milk, ice skate, and his “fall” from the balcony. and finally a little confrontation is what makes him feel as if he can’t live anymore. as someone who’s suffered with that; completely and utterly realistic to the point that it’s uncomfortable to watch. and they did it classily! they never described how he passed. they never showed it directly. wonderful writing and that actor was so damn good.

I went to school with at least a couple of the kids from the first cohort of Degrassi Next Gen, so this show is extra weird for me to see now. They were all pretty chill. I turn 31 tomorrow and I just spent an hour and a half watching this. When I watched this as a teen, I had no idea I still would still have no life by now.

You can always count on Craig to make the worst possible decision in any given situation. You can even play a game where you pause the episode and try to guess what Craig will do, and half the time it will be something even worse that you hadn't even imagined.
Thank god you addressed Crarco because my pals thought I was INSANE for thinking there was something there. Also another missed opportunity was Degrassi's many attempts to have a bisexual male character. While yes, we did finally get Miles (bisexual king), they had planned and scrapped several bisexual guy storylines (Craig, Peter, Drew). It pains me to think about how cool those storylines could've been. Anyways amazing video.
I mean, they were terrible together when Craig was at his worst sniffing coke and performing on stage while high out of his mind. But generally speaking, they had a lot in common and liked the same things. You can tell the kind of bond they had just by Degrassi Goes Hollywood alone. They just never got the timing right. Not only that, but in one of the season five minis, it’s pretty much explained why Ellie never got back with Sean as well (although they had a decent relationship IMO).
@@ellagoreyshorrorstories7524 actually when he was with Ellie he didn't really give two fucks about Emma especially when he started hanging out with Jay and he didn't really pay much attention to her except for the time she accused him of stealing school property. It was his financial situation and his past that got the best of him and he only became hung up on her when he came back in season 6 and Emma was dating Peter at the time yet he still managed to get her (all because I think sean going to jail and Peter getting a slap on the wrist also Emma trying to help Sean while he was in jail created a rift between her relationship with Peter).
I didn’t watch after season 7 until quarantine last year and I was surprised I enjoyed the newer classes but I could believe how they ruined manny Emma and liberty in season 8 lol. I liked the college years for Paige Marco and Ellie even though it was hard to watch sometimes. But they sucked the life out of all those characters in college in season 8
I would give anything to go back to the first time i saw the Degrassi Boiling Point promo. The serotonin that promo gave me can never be matched. Also rewatching it and seeing how genuinely great the actors of Eli, Alli, and Clare were was just wild. What a great show 😭
I actually thought Maya’s development was great. Her trauma follows her and I think it depicted PTSD and trauma realistically bc you never really get over it and saved those later seasons
what i hate about how they treated adam that isn’t talked about much is that he experienced violent transphobia (owen and fitz) and then tried to redeem those characters without really showing how they changed also didn’t face consequences for their actions with made me extremely upset

Agreed! Their relationship was a big deal for me as a viewer when I was 12ish and watching it live. I was figuring out my sexuality while living in a very homophobic and oppressive household (in an equally homophobic small town), and it - along with South of Nowhere, which was such a good show, way ahead of its time - was so refreshing to see them get together, despite Paige's insecurities and the way everyone around her treated her and Alex.
I'm going to disagree. I'm getting tired of the entertainment world acting like homosexuality is like changing shirts.🤔🤔🤔 What do I mean by that? Paige, a girl who has only shown to be attracted to males, is all of a suddenly gets into a relationship with a female. Which by the way, after that relationship ends, Paige shows no signs of being attracted to any other women. Why do people forget that a good portion of us humans get into a relationship with someone because of how physically attractive we are to them.😏if you notice a lot of Hollywood writing from movies or TV shows, especially with women, always write women who have been in relationship with only men but get into a relationship with a woman because they "talk to each other" and have a little bit of a "common understanding" but don't show them actually being sexually physically attracted to each other. That's why to this day Paige getting into a lesbian relationship made no sense in the first place🤨
I hate to say this but I wanted more of it(not the incestuous moments ofc). Siblings that commit incest are usually codependent on the other for all their emotional needs which is why hence they form a romantic bond as well especially when you throw other things like drinking problems into the mix. I think it would have been an interesting topic to delve into that codependency because of the parental neglect aspect and with Fiona's later abuse from her boyfriend. When people lose someone they're dependent on they desperately want to fill the void. With Declan separating from Fiona emotionally that could explain why she got into a relationship with Bobby. I don't like how they just wrote it off as her having a crush on Holly J. I think the only other real codependency moment we see with siblings is Tiny and Vince. And that's mostly just on Tiny's part. I wanted more but that might just be because I'm a big fan of emotionally unstable relationships.

FUN FACT: I accidentally watched next class first, realised that there were characters from next generation and then went back and watched EVERYTHING (DJH, DH, DNG) and then rewatched next class and everything finally made sense. this all started during my freshman year of high school and now that Degrassi just got put on HBO Max, I started rewatching it again, and I just finished my freshman year of college. to say that I have very different thoughts from when I first started watching it to now rewatching for like the millionth time is an understatement.

my sister loved degrassi growing up and eventually got me into it too. we shared a room and I still have such VIVID memories of the shark in the water promo
as someone who was around for the Shark in the Water live when it happened, it was definitely peak Degrassi. The whole boiling point was handled so well and the daily premiere format was very exciting to keep up with. It's lost a little bit with streaming these days, but season 10 was the most hype I ever was about this show.

Degrassi started as something called an "after school special" which was a very popular thing in the 80s. It was basically short dramatization that would play after school every day to teach kids life lessons. You can really tell that thats what degrassi junior high was. They were super common at the time and degrassi was most popular by far.

I think the point is that the show made it seem like that was the fault of weed, like, the message was "you shouldn't smoke weed because if you do, you may forget to take your insulin and have a medical emergency", which is a bad argument.

Anytime I mention it to anyone, I get weird looks like it’s something people don’t talk about. Definitely makes me sad knowing people don’t have the same love for it. (Also, I didn’t watch it until I was ~20. I know my mom had episodes on our old DVR, but I don’t remember much about what I did watch when I was younger except it was after Jimmy became wheelchair bound.)
My partner and me actually binge watched the series together up until the last of the OG cast finished their run. He’s a few years older than me, so that’s the run he grew up with. I was going through high school when the season 10-ish cast was coming in, and retrospectively had more of a link to that era. (Though I fully respect both, and they both hold a special place in my heart.) With all that being said, the series as a whole is absolutely one of my comfort shows now. Which is absolutely absurd with how much chaos it is based around, lol.

I think it might intentional. Degassi tends to do alot of parallel/analog characters that share similar traits and get similar storylines. Like Caitlin/Emma/Ellie/Clare, Rick Munro DJH/Sean/Zig, Manny/Alli, Joey/JT/Craig. Eli and Craig also share similarities. I'm pretty sure it's intentional

Ooof that was one that was hard to watch. One thing I liked about it was the different angle it took to the teacher sexually abusing a student situation. Most of them were “student gets crush on teacher, tries to pursue it, gets shut down at first, but then the teacher gives in to their attraction”, which is of course a dangerous situation, but also one that’s really generic and easy to write.
The whole thing with KC’s coach was less cut-and-dry. It was all stuff that you know was uncomfortable and wrong without the coach directly trying to hook up with him. Like some combination of vicarious sexual gratification through watching KC do things and likely through the power he had over him, as well as seemingly grooming him to the point of accepting sexual advances. It’s possible that the coach really did just want to get his rocks off by watching (that’s definitely a kink), but I’d also believe he was trying to manipulate KC into eventually accepting sexual advances from him. Like he was testing the waters. “Okay, he’ll let me help him get laid. Let’s try pushing it further and see if he’ll watch porn, drink a beer, spend the night. Okay, he’ll do that, let’s make him afraid by showing him the gun. Now he’s scared, can I push him to have sex with a hot woman? If I can do that, can I get him to agree to a threesome? And after that having sex with me?”
I’m glad the coach was arrested and all, but I agree with others that I wish we’d looked at the details and aftermath a little more, instead of just the harrassment. Taking a closer look at the trauma KC experienced from the situation, mostly; while I think explaining what the coach was trying to do and what the red flags were would be good, too, I think the harrassment in itself was pretty clearly all a red flag.

I am so torn on the Craig/Marco thing. On one hand, I was waiting for it!! On the other hand, I liked that it showed that a gay guy and a straight guy can be close affectionate friends without it turning into a romance which I think is a good message. It was just weird that they went as far as having them kiss for no reason.
Marco kissed Craig in a desperate way to show Dylan that he, Marco, was over him, prompting an iconic line from Craig: "So when in doubt, you kiss Craig?!"

I think one thing that absolutely should be talked about is the fact that Degrassi is CANADIAN and didn’t feature a single indigenous character or storyline in its run (to my knowledge). Completely bonkers how they let that happen.
I completely agree! As I said in a different comment, they had a few indigenous actors over the course of the show, but they never made those characters canonically indigenous. I would hope that if there's ever another Degrassi show they would explore that!

I agree - Eli calling Clare a “whore” was one of the nastiest and most shocking moments for me. I understand at this point Eli was in rage over Clare cheating and believing she’s pregnant with Drew’s baby, but Eli as a character is very progressive and would never have referred to any girl as a whore, especially Clare. Later Eli says he wouldn’t have done that if he had known the baby was his, as if that even matters? He called her a whore for cheating with Drew after he cheated on Clare with Lenore because he “missed her so much”. Eli cheating was out of character for him anyway...I don’t know where they were going with that “whore” moment with Eli, but it made me disappointed in the writers and his character.
But they were also a dramatic couple..... Degrassi, it goes there! Ha ha ha

Oh! My biggest "Ok, Degrassi" was the way they handled addiction. It was always hooked, destruction, recovery in the span of 3 episodes. As a recovered addict it was almost insulting. Like they didn't even research what certain drugs did. Despite going over opiates, meth, coke, alcohol and shrooms they still managed to make weed seem like the absolute worse

The "Shark in the Water" hype back in 2010 was unreal. I've been watching Degrassi since 2001 and the passion for the show began dying down around seasons 7-9. But the interest for Degrassi as it was basically revived in front of our own eyes made the music video a mascot in the community. I don't there's ever been a better marketing decision made by tv creators.
As a Canadian teen in the 2010’s the seasons they did the telenovela format were the absolute GOAT. Looking back a lot of those arcs were hot trash piles of filler content but oh boy did I love having a new Degrassi every day.
halfway through - cam was a seriously amazing representation of depression, how mental health is isolating, and the escalation of it all. we see him start, sad, but in the kind of shy teenager way. he starts to make friends and get into relationships, but realistically he’s still depressed. he begins to (tw) self harm, with the milk, ice skate, and his “fall” from the balcony. and finally a little confrontation is what makes him feel as if he can’t live anymore. as someone who’s suffered with that; completely and utterly realistic to the point that it’s uncomfortable to watch. and they did it classily! they never described how he passed. they never showed it directly. wonderful writing and that actor was so damn good.
And they don’t even create a plot hole when they didn’t say how he passed, like one episode you hear maya say “they never told me how he passed”

You can always count on Craig to make the worst possible decision in any given situation. You can even play a game where you pause the episode and try to guess what Craig will do, and half the time it will be something even worse that you hadn't even imagined.
Thank god you addressed Crarco because my pals thought I was INSANE for thinking there was something there. Also another missed opportunity was Degrassi's many attempts to have a bisexual male character. While yes, we did finally get Miles (bisexual king), they had planned and scrapped several bisexual guy storylines (Craig, Peter, Drew). It pains me to think about how cool those storylines could've been. Anyways amazing video.

I mean, they were terrible together when Craig was at his worst sniffing coke and performing on stage while high out of his mind.
But generally speaking, they had a lot in common and liked the same things. You can tell the kind of bond they had just by Degrassi Goes Hollywood alone. They just never got the timing right.
Not only that, but in one of the season five minis, it’s pretty much explained why Ellie never got back with Sean as well (although they had a decent relationship IMO).
@@ellagoreyshorrorstories7524 actually when he was with Ellie he didn't really give two fucks about Emma especially when he started hanging out with Jay and he didn't really pay much attention to her except for the time she accused him of stealing school property. It was his financial situation and his past that got the best of him and he only became hung up on her when he came back in season 6 and Emma was dating Peter at the time yet he still managed to get her (all because I think sean going to jail and Peter getting a slap on the wrist also Emma trying to help Sean while he was in jail created a rift between her relationship with Peter).
Emma’s weed brownie storyline was literally when I stopped watching the show

I actually thought Maya’s development was great. Her trauma follows her and I think it depicted PTSD and trauma realistically bc you never really get over it and saved those later seasons

Bianca said she was stupid for not wanting to continue dancing with Adam because they both are good at it and enjoy it a lot. That was her redemption

Agreed! Their relationship was a big deal for me as a viewer when I was 12ish and watching it live. I was figuring out my sexuality while living in a very homophobic and oppressive household (in an equally homophobic small town), and it - along with South of Nowhere, which was such a good show, way ahead of its time - was so refreshing to see them get together, despite Paige's insecurities and the way everyone around her treated her and Alex.

What do I mean by that?
Paige, a girl who has only shown to be attracted to males, is all of a suddenly gets into a relationship with a female. Which by the way, after that relationship ends, Paige shows no signs of being attracted to any other women. Why do people forget that a good portion of us humans get into a relationship with someone because of how physically attractive we are to them.😏if you notice a lot of Hollywood writing from movies or TV shows, especially with women, always write women who have been in relationship with only men but get into a relationship with a woman because they "talk to each other" and have a little bit of a "common understanding" but don't show them actually being sexually physically attracted to each other.
That's why to this day Paige getting into a lesbian relationship made no sense in the first place🤨

I hate to say this but I wanted more of it(not the incestuous moments ofc). Siblings that commit incest are usually codependent on the other for all their emotional needs which is why hence they form a romantic bond as well especially when you throw other things like drinking problems into the mix. I think it would have been an interesting topic to delve into that codependency because of the parental neglect aspect and with Fiona's later abuse from her boyfriend. When people lose someone they're dependent on they desperately want to fill the void. With Declan separating from Fiona emotionally that could explain why she got into a relationship with Bobby. I don't like how they just wrote it off as her having a crush on Holly J. I think the only other real codependency moment we see with siblings is Tiny and Vince. And that's mostly just on Tiny's part. I wanted more but that might just be because I'm a big fan of emotionally unstable relationships.

Just a note: a student teacher relationship that did have long term consequences was snake and Darcy's relationship, who didn't actually do anything, but did get weird and got snake a really bad reputation even when he was aquitted

I think I know the point you're trying to make, but still, calling that a "relationship" is a bit of a stretch. And it's not like Darcy was the only student he tried to help with that level of closeness.

I think only having the same sex teacher/student relationship condemn implies worst: the harmful stereotype that gay people are inherently predatory. Like "a gay teacher existing is a threat to kids".
FUN FACT: I accidentally watched next class first, realised that there were characters from next generation and then went back and watched EVERYTHING (DJH, DH, DNG) and then rewatched next class and everything finally made sense. this all started during my freshman year of high school and now that Degrassi just got put on HBO Max, I started rewatching it again, and I just finished my freshman year of college. to say that I have very different thoughts from when I first started watching it to now rewatching for like the millionth time is an understatement.

my sister loved degrassi growing up and eventually got me into it too. we shared a room and I still have such VIVID memories of the shark in the water promo
as someone who was around for the Shark in the Water live when it happened, it was definitely peak Degrassi. The whole boiling point was handled so well and the daily premiere format was very exciting to keep up with. It's lost a little bit with streaming these days, but season 10 was the most hype I ever was about this show.
Those were their peak days for sure.

Degrassi started as something called an "after school special" which was a very popular thing in the 80s. It was basically short dramatization that would play after school every day to teach kids life lessons. You can really tell that thats what degrassi junior high was. They were super common at the time and degrassi was most popular by far.

I think the point is that the show made it seem like that was the fault of weed, like, the message was "you shouldn't smoke weed because if you do, you may forget to take your insulin and have a medical emergency", which is a bad argument.
