So I went through the steps to balance it. It all looks good. I went through the APP and after the balance test - which said all is excellent. the camera now leans to the left about 15degrees. and doesn't come back to level when moving it around. Any suggestions.?
Hi - I can't seem to calibrate it. I am getting the "Calibration failed. Pan axis is locked." error. But I did checked and the pan axis is unlocked. What am I missing?
Juss got my upgrade from RSC to the RS2 and on the test had it always show unbalanced and motors would quickly go to sleep. Been missing the Handle had to also get balanced when you turned the Cam Upwards. Another one, once in use why does it keep panning to the top direction here I mean it turn the camera updlwards slowly. What could that be
Wicked video dude, I can get all the axis great, BUT I cannot get my roll to 'stay' when I move it whilst balancing. The camera is balanced perfectly on the tilt, and the roll it sits completely happily 'flat', but if I move it to one side or the other, it rotates back to that lower position. Any ideas? Is it counterweight time or something?
It's no doubt the most difficult one to balance, with my setup, Sony A73 series cameras and those big GM lenses I have it almost pulled all the way out, right there, I find that's the sweet spot for me. It's a hard nut to crack when balancing sometimes, but when you get it right and it doesn't move it's worth getting a cool beer ready to celebrate! What setup are you using? As you can see at 3:25 I have it at around 0.3 more or less.

That's always a pain, if you set it up right, it should sit somewhere between 0-1. Pick it up, tilt it to the right at an angle and see how you're doing, move it delicately, sooo delicately every time and you should be fine. Find where that magic number is and remember it.
@@PhillipSkraba Ok, I will give it a bit more patience then. Also, I was wondering, have you ever balanced a camera on the RS2 with an external monitor (like a Ninja V) in a fixed position (eg. not rotating with the camera) and HDMI cable attached?
@@PhillipSkraba Oh wow, thank you so much dude! I was following the official DJI video and trying tilting backward and for some reason I just couldn't get it perfectly balance. So much easier when I tilted to the right. Balance test was excellent on all three axis!
Thanks for the video! Would you recommend always doing both the autotune and the test after switching lenses? I‘m using MFT lenses with a GH5 and the 3 lenses I use most are quite similar in weight and size. Would it damage the gimbal if I don‘t have the time to always fully calibrate it?
I always do the autotune and test, it's pretty fast and gives me peace of mind, as well as letting the motors control the payload better. If you don't have time and the gimbal is working fine, then that's okay. If however it goes to sleep that basically means the motors are under strain, nothing bad will happen, the gimbal will just go to sleep.
Hi Phillip, Great video once more! I connect the battery grip to the gimble. There is a click mechanism. it wobbles a bit at that point. with you, too? Thanks Marco
Thanks Marco! Yes, when I put it in the first time I was worried! So click it in as usual, and pull the level nice and tight, it doesn't go all the way, just pull it with your finger until it won't go anymore, then the battery grip shouldn't wobble anymore! Let me know if it's okay.

The one I use is the Manfrotto 055xprob, well, a slightly older version with a better head than the new one, you might be able to still pick it up somewhere. It's a tripod I bought when I lived in LA 10 years ago, and it's still like new today.
DJI Ronin RS2 has violent snaps when all axis become aligned odd movements and vibrates uncontrollably then puts the motors in sleep mode. Ive tried Balancing and motor settings but no matter what i do it all seems out of wack. I also tried resetting all settings but nothing has worked so far. Every time i calibrate it just vibrates and makes popping noises. when i manually control motors of all axis's it all works smooth and fine. Please HELP!!
Hi Phillip, do you set your rs2 in a smooth cinematic mode? Imo the movement of the gimbal is way to fast. If yes, what dou you recommend. Your tip about the wooble works. Thanks a lot.
Well, if you set everything on slow on the actual Ronin screen on the gimbal you instantly slow down the movements. I'm still playing with settings to get everything feeling just right, but as soon as I dial them in, I'll drop a video for you guys.
Smooth cinematic is intended for heavy camera gear as it kicks the motors into overdrive to stabilize. If you’re not pushing weight I think it’s not needed.
I was using zhiyun crane plus for 3 years, I couldn’t use my sigma 18-35 because it is so heavy for camera..my rsc2 just came now and my goodness.. it’s like 10x upgrade.. so easy to use and pack
Hey Phil, thanks for the video very informative, have a question, I noticed that on your Sony you have an arca swiss type cage. I have a sunway foto cage on my rig and it will not mount up to the DJI plate (to shallow). If you dont mind, could you let me know what brand cage you are using? Thanks Rick
Hi Richard, I'm using an 8Sinn cage, I've made a couple of videos about their cages, it's a Polish company. In my opinion they make some of the most beautiful cages in the world.
Thanks so much! Have you found a good solution for mounting/quick release plates? The plates that came with the RS2 don't fit my manfrotto tripods, what would you recommend?
You’re welcome! It’s funny, most of us use Manfrotto plates and they go with Arca Swiss 🤦🏻♂️ I’m about to start dropping more videos on the RS 2 so I’ll be testing out various options 👌🏻
HELP! I am using the RS2 with the Sony A7siii with a cage, an atmos ninja V with a battery, and the sigma 24-70mm. It is a pretty heavy load and I have never been able to balance it well. When I do the balance test, the RS2 says EXCELLENT on all 3 but after a bit of filming and moving around the RS2 will vibrate and then just stop balancing all together. Can you please make a video showing how to balance a heavy payload?
I think if you have a heavy payload it's worth picking up some weights from SmallRig for example to balance it out so it's sitting a little more even on the plate.
Top right button should be calibration, once you've done that you should be able to see all axis and they will show you if you're in the green (at 0) or if you're stressing the motors.
Hey kindly help me out I got it my RS2 weeks ago but my 1 dx mark 2 is not balancing on it with 24-70 2.8 ? My Q is does anyone did balance it on 1 dx mark 2 waiting for your prompt reply thank you
That should be no problem, we've balanced it with cinema cameras, so the Canon should be simple. If you need, you can buy counter balance weights for it if you're having a hard time.
Seriously front heavy? I have the same with this setup, if you pull the camera pretty far back on the rails it should be okay as a start point and then go through my points here.
I have the RS2 with A7S3 and Sony 24-70 GM. No matter how many times I set it up balance it and run test it still Falls forward top heavy when I pick up the gimbal. Is 24/70 Compatible??
That's quite a tall camera and adding a Rode on top will make it super high. So what I would to in if I were in your place and I wanted a Rode mic on my RS2, I'd buy the SmallRig 3025 Nato mount with cold shoe. That would allow you to mount it on the actual gimbal not getting in your way, and it wouldn't make the camera top heavy. That's what I suggest, here is a link - amzn.to/3afrID8
@@PhillipSkraba appreciate the reply, Phillip. This was the direction I was heading, too. I guess it's technically not safe or ideal to have a mic or anything else obstructing the full range of the gimbal anyway. Thanks for providing a direct link to the Nato mount, i've just purchased the mount...Might need a 3.5mm jack extension cable to ensure enough cable movement.
Yes, I think that's your best bet. I have quite a few things for the RS2 from SmallRig and they are surprisingly excellent. For the 3.5mm I'd go to a local electronics shop and find a 20-30cm one, I can't seem to find one on Amazon.
@@PhillipSkraba here's the 3.5mm extension cable from Amazon. I chose a 90 degree angle version. Only need about 12-13cm since my MIC has a coil cable: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DCBJ51I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
im frustrated because i have the exact same setup, sony a7iii, with smallrig, gmaster 24-70, even with the peak design strap holders, but my roll axis WILL NOT stay where i put it for the life of me, like ive taken the cage off, changed the lens to all focal lenghts, it makes no sense. please please please help do i need to just contact dji?
Now that is very odd. The roll axis is no doubt the oddest one, with my setup I had it on around 2 or 3 if I remember correctly, that should work, you then push it forward and to the right so it's at a 45 degree angle from you to check it, in theory it should stay in place like mine does. Have you set the roll exactly like mine?
I just had your same issues. Center balance it the best you can and then fully tighten the lock switch and it’ll stay in place when you move it around 👏
I have a Sony A7Siii on the RS2. I also use a Rode external mic on mounted to the top of the camera. After having it perfectly balance, when I turn on the gimbal the upper right logo turns orange and tells me there is a problem with the tilt access. Do you know anyone who has been able to get the RS2 to work with the Rode on top of the camera? It used to work fine on my Pilot Fly gimbal.
I had it on the Manfrotto 055XPROB with the 808RC4 head. It's a photo setup, and one I'd really recommend, I think I've had it for 10 years and it's good as the day I bought it.

@@PhillipSkraba thanks for doing so good video stuff! Greetings from germany.
@@Marco-zp7nb Thank You, greetings from your neighbour Poland.
Smooth cinematic is intended for heavy camera gear as it kicks the motors into overdrive to stabilize. If you’re not pushing weight I think it’s not needed.
Could you balance a c100 mark ii on the RS2?
I've seen it done, how secure and well that works I'm not sure though. I use the Sony a7 series cameras on it, so much much lighter.
I was using zhiyun crane plus for 3 years, I couldn’t use my sigma 18-35 because it is so heavy for camera..my rsc2 just came now and my goodness.. it’s like 10x upgrade.. so easy to use and pack
I tried the Crane a couple of times, yes, the RS2 and RSC2 are just monsters, love them to bits!
Hey Phil,
thanks for the video very informative, have a question, I noticed that on your Sony you have an arca swiss type cage. I have a sunway foto cage on my rig and it will not mount up to the DJI plate (to shallow). If you dont mind, could you let me know what brand cage you are using?
Thanks
Rick
Yes i tried it out like in your video but it doesn’t work in the tiltmode horizontilly. All the other axes it’s ok. Thank you very much .
Keep on balancing until it's perfect and it should work in both orientations. You're welcome!
@@PhillipSkraba Oh gotcha! I'll have to look into that.
how do you do the test without the phone app? I can't find it in the onboard menu?
Top right button should be calibration, once you've done that you should be able to see all axis and they will show you if you're in the green (at 0) or if you're stressing the motors.
Im still confused , after you balance do you lock all the locks back? before using?
The motor locks are the ones I m talking about also
After you've balanced everything unlock all the motors to use it.
Yes, all of them, unlock them when finished balancing.
I have a canon eos r with the control ring adapter with a sigma 18-35 lens. I have a difficult time trying to balance it, do you have any advice?
Seriously front heavy? I have the same with this setup, if you pull the camera pretty far back on the rails it should be okay as a start point and then go through my points here.
dude my tilt axis will not move. how is yours moving so smoothly?
I have the RS2 with A7S3 and Sony 24-70 GM. No matter how many times I set it up balance it and run test it still Falls forward top heavy when I pick up the gimbal. Is 24/70 Compatible??
Same probleme .. with alpha 7 IV and sigma 24-70 .. do find a solution ?
That 24-70 gm is a pain in the butt heavy lens.
YOUR THE BEST THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!! FINALLY EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT AFTER 5 HOURS LOL
You’re welcome haha!
excellent tutorial, easy and much better than many others. thanks!
Thank You!
please also make a video on different modes and tips
I’ll have a think about it, sure!
Really helpful quick video thanks
You're welcome!
My rsc2 doesn't look like that. Are you using a rs2 model?
This is the RS2, yes. The process is the same though.
What do I do if the roll keeps wobbling left and right? I moved the slider to the right and then it leans too far right, same goes with the left 🤷♂️
I would auto-calibrate.
Super help full I appreciate it!
You're welcome!
how did you balance it off at 15 degrees did you use your legs to support it?
I had it on a tripod with a ballhead, easiest way. However, when I don't have that I just use books or whatever I have to get it done.
how do you balance the RS2 when my Canon 1DX Mark II camera with RODE Hotshoe MIC? The mic hits the RS2 arm and wont balance...
That looks like a good one! Yes, you're right, that should be fine!
im frustrated because i have the exact same setup, sony a7iii, with smallrig, gmaster 24-70, even with the peak design strap holders, but my roll axis WILL NOT stay where i put it for the life of me, like ive taken the cage off, changed the lens to all focal lenghts, it makes no sense. please please please help do i need to just contact dji?
every other axis is fine no problem balancing but the roll wont stay put how it should for the perfect balance
Yes, I usually start off with the rail, getting that in the middle nice and balanced.
I can't get this balance for the life of me.. you know if you put a different plate like the vertical shooting plate it would be different to balance?
I have a Sony A7Siii on the RS2. I also use a Rode external mic on mounted to the top of the camera. After having it perfectly balance, when I turn on the gimbal the upper right logo turns orange and tells me there is a problem with the tilt access.
Do you know anyone who has been able to get the RS2 to work with the Rode on top of the camera? It used to work fine on my Pilot Fly gimbal.
Thank you. Worked perfectly.
Fantastic, have fun with it!
please explain app parameters settings
to the point and efficient :) THANK YOU
Thank You!
Very awesome video! Thank you
Thanks! Glad you likes it Doyan.
What tripod did you have the gimbal on?
I had it on the Manfrotto 055XPROB with the 808RC4 head. It's a photo setup, and one I'd really recommend, I think I've had it for 10 years and it's good as the day I bought it.
Thank you. And awesome video. Very helpful
@@DameFitness Thank You, you’re most welcome!
great tutorial my friend!!
Thank You!
I balanced it perfectly and calibrated it auto-tuned it and it's still vibrates sometimes
It shouldn’t, unless you’re being mean to it.
Best explanation.. saw lot of videos but this was most helpful.. can you make some more videos on how to use rs2 and focus videos using rs2 without using focus motor 😃
Thank You! Yes, I'm preparing to get a lot more of these out, and I have a load of accessories from SmallRig so I'll get a video about those too.
@@PhillipSkraba I am facing a lot of issues in managing focus in videos while panning using gimbal .. can you also prepare a tutorial on how to manage focus in videos shooting using gimbals … and what are the best auto focus settings in video
Sure! That's a video I have in mind too, focus. I'll be working on that one soon.
I've been struggling for two days now and my gimbal always makes a 180 and turns the camera to the wrong direction.
Seems you’re triple tapping the trigger.
Appreciate the video. I'm using Canon R6 with the RF 24-70 lense and am having a bear of a time getting it to balance appropriately. Anyone else experiencing the same?
I have a similar set up with my Sony a7s3 and 24-70, it'll handle it no problem, just need a big of patience to balance it.
Thank you for this guide
You’re welcome!
