BMW Manual Transmission Fluid Change - Quick & Easy (E90, E92, E93)

- Today we're here with Gareth Foley to show you how to change the transmission fluid in a 2006 BMW 325xi.
First, remove any plastic skid pans in the way of the plugs. Then, break the fill plug loose to ensure you're able to get fluid back into the trans. Next, drain the transmission of the old fluid and fill with new MTL.
Why would someone do this service? Over time, trans fluid can become dirty and contaminated, much like engine oil and brake fluid. It's important to drain old fluid out and replace it with new fluid every so often; a good rule of thumb is once every 40k miles, or about once every 4 years depending on how much you drive.

01:15 BMW says that transmission oil is "lifetime" and you saw the "mud" that came out from that gearbox! Thank you guys!
We dive into it a bit deeper in this article ... Their "lifetime" is a little different than what we mean with our "lifetime guarantee" lol
blog.fcpeuro.com/bmw-lifetime-transmission-fluid-isnt-lifetime
Bmw considers you being a "lifetime" owner 5 years then you get a new one.... thats lifetime lol
Thanks for the video, man. That tip about making sure you can remove the fill plug first was a great idea. Going to do mine soon! Take care.
My man out here SWEATIN so hard, im breaking a sweat
For who wants to know, torque specs drain and fill plugs:
Petrol
4 cyl 45nm
6 cyl m12 25nm, m18 35nm
Diesel:
4 cyl m47t2 engine m12 25nm, m18 35nm
4 cyl n47 engine 45nm
6 cyl engines 35nm
it's recommended to change both plugs, they have build in gaskets that could start leaking after reuse.
Thank you. Awesome video. Now I know what my mechanic is doing with my car. Thank you :)
You're welcome! Glad you like the video!
Hi buddy how many litres of oil you take out of the gearbox 6 speed transmision??? Thank you
I believe its around 1.7liters but like he said wait till a small stream of oil comes out the fill hole and tighten the fill plug up and I think its 8 Newton pounds of torque
I have a Haynes repair manual here on my lap. 2006 thru 2014 3 series. For the S6X-37BZ and S6-53DZ says to use MTF-LT-2 BMW 83220309031 fluid at 1.6 qts. . S6-17BG trans use MTF-LT-3 BMW 83227533818 at 1.4 qts..
LT-2 fluid? I did not see what fluid you put in with your bottled turned edge-wise in the video. I have a 2011 BMW E90 M/T. Thank you.
How much fluid do we need? I know its fill till it comes out. But how many should I order to get in that region. I see online some larger quantities, yet you only have a single 5QT bottle. And oil viscosity plz
Might want to mention the torque spec for the drain/fill bolts and what type of transmission fluid is recommended.
Torque spec: Snug
Torque setting is "nipped nm". When it stops turning with a little effort, push a little harder to "nip" it.
What about the filter ? Any idea of torque spec and where it should go ?
At 0:39 of the video, when the splash shield is removed, you can see a lot of fluid leak build-up along that crossbar. Is that from a valve cover leak, front differential leak, or something else? Thank you, and great videos!!
Oil pan leak and shifter seal leak.
what was the spray you used after refitting the fill cap? and was it just for cleaning it up? cheers
Hello Tom, that was just brake cleaner to clean up the grease and oil.
Hello, what's the thing he strayed the transmission with 2:53? Is it brake cleaner to clean off the transmission fluid?
Yes, just some brake cleaner!
You mentioned the car has to be warm up before starting this job, why is this recommended? Thanks!
Warming up the fluid will allow it to thin out a bit, making it easier to drain!
Awesome, so simple. Thanks, guys!
Nice video, is there a recommended interval to change the manual trans oil? Also what about rear diff oil change?
For the manual transmission I recommend changing the oil every 30k to 50K miles.
how many liters?
6
1 or 1,5 L
quarts*
Hi, great vid, just windering what did you used?
hello there honestly I checked this video to know the key size of the plugs... is this torx a 40 or 45 ? thx
Question
1 can you re use the plugs or do you have to buy new ones if so what are the part numbers
2 what type of fluid
3 is there a transmission filter
Thank you
1. I do and there was no issue. 2. I used Red Line 75W90 NS GL-5 Gear Oil. 3. Not that I know of, just clean the drain bolt well.
@@luisramos8654 3 there is one part no 17212283111
Great video! Question, what's the trans fluid capacity? 4L?
Thanks!
Hi Fishee, the manual transmission takes aboutt 1.4L/1.5QTs.
Thanks for this video really.
Does car need to be running when removing or putting back drain plug? I keep seeing that in other videos
He'll nah
Hi Gareth, thanks for your videos once again. I own an 06 BMW 330i AUTO Ia m planning to change my pan/filter and fluid soon I am 116k miles. Hopefully you can do a video on AUTO transmissions soon. Cheers!
Did u manage to do It? 😂😂😂
Thank you 👍🏾
Had my second gear slip today, wondering if I should drain all of it or top off the TF with lucas oil no slip trans fluid ?
I changed my bmw e60 without renewing the drain and fill plug, will this leak now?. the rubber washers looked fine on them.
There is a risk since the seal is part of the filter. Generally, they are one time use only. Many reuse them but it is recommended to replace them to be safe.
hey! i got bmw e53 4.4 2006, automatic transmission GA6HP26, 78k mileage.
i got little kicks when it's shifting and looks a little slow when shifting up , should i change transmission oil and oil filter?
Yes, it would be a good idea to change the transmission oil and trans filter. That should help smooth out the shifts.
do i need a filter replacement. I have a 2011 328i manual transmission and i'm replacing my fluid im at 96k miles on the car.
Hey Gareth! Great video as usual! How old was that gearbox fluid-it was black!!
dont forget, you often have to flush it (especially in automatics the torque converter holds about an additional quart). Run the car around through all the gears. Come back drain/fill, drive the car around again, flush/fill. And maybe one more time for good measure to be sure the whole transmission gets flushed.
@@contacttimbre $30 a liter for this fluid though.
Any gasket/ring/washer in plugs?? Pleasee
I also noticed there is no gasket on mine
Not got any issues with mine but I'm at 85k miles and pretty sure differential and gearbox oil have never been replaced 🤔 bmw don't mention anything about it, that's pretty bad isn't it?
Hi Scot, yeah it would definitely be a good time to replace those fluids!
I have a manual if I’m low on transmission fluid will my car not move even while I’m gear. I think this because I was in 2nd accelerating then I lost all power csr wouldn’t move. Tried moving it in 1st 3rd 4th and reverse nothing
:50 sec….I’m having a bad day. How can I loosen that fill bolt after I already drained the pan?? In my car, there is not enough space to get a ratchet & socket
Can a Drain and Fill be done for the ZF transmission [ auto ] , or must the oil pan and gasket ALWAYS bechanged
It is recommended to do the full service, as the new fluids lifespan would be shortened by running it through a contaminated filter.
Great video
The label on my gearbox is MTF-LT-3 what is the viscosity and specs on the market is it 75W80 API-GL5 ?
Me too. So much mystery over what to use. I have a Haynes repair manual here on my lap. 2006 thru 2014 3 series. For the S6X-37BZ and S6-53DZ says to use MTF-LT-2 BMW 83220309031 fluid at 1.6 qts. . S6-17BG trans use MTF-LT-3 BMW 83227533818 at 1.4 qts. .But when I do searches for MTF LT2 I don’t find any fluids. And don’t want to pay premium retail for BMW fluid.
I have a 2008 328xi 6MT and the BMW fluid is like $30 liter. I think the redline is like $10. So...
1) How much do I need to fill it
2) Should I use only the BMW or OE which is Shell, or can I use another 75W90 gear oil like Liqui Moly for example?
1) 1.8 liters is the fluid capacity.
2) You can absolutely use 75W90 gear oil from LIQUI MOLY.
@@fcpeuro Ok as long as you are sure. If you believe the original BMW formula is better, then I will use that but if you say the Liqui Moly is just as good then I will use that. Is there a difference from the Liqui Moly and the Redline? Is one of those better than the other? Thanks.
Which fluid do you recommend to use on 2007 e92 335i n54 manual? Some say to use D6ATF, some 75W90, but there's like LT-3 and LT-5 or something I'm a bit confused, would be great if you could help me get the right one
The brand would be more personal preference as long as the oil meets BMW specifications. I personally recommend the Pentosin and Redline fluids.
I have the same question as Bobb and the question wasn’t answered. Thanks.
Thanks!
2011 328i e 93 6 speed manual what type of transmission fluid do i use
what if its not warm? my car has stood still with trans out and engine out. wont it start?
do an auto trans for e90/91/92/93?
How do you get the oil from the cooling lines/radiator that is on a M3? How can you run the pump?
What year M3? And is it automatic or DCT?
FCP Euro it is a manual transmission
+FCP Euro year is 2008
Upier0 The pump would normally be turned on by the dealer via the DIS Tester. This usually squeezes out another cup or so of fluid. Most DIYers simply skip this step and perform a basic drain and fill. I believe the pump can also be activated using an aftermarket Autologic scanner. If you can borrow one of those it is the only other way you can turn the pump on.
Would you happen to know what the part number for the under tray is that you remove to get to the transmission?
I imagine it depends on model of car, Real OEM will tell you
I have a leak in the transmission fluid for a 120i, what could cause this? I would appreciate any feedback :)
Is your 120i automatic? If so, it could be the transmission pan seal leaking. The best way to diagnose is to get the car up on a lift or jack stands and look underneath with a light to see where the leak is coming from.
Hallo i have an e46 and i want to change the transmission fluid but i would like to tell me approximately how much did you get in your car?Around 2 liters? Thanks in advance.
+spoudes bg As long as your E46 is a manual transmission the process is basically going to be identical. Fill capacity on most manuals is between 1 and 1.5 liters of fluid.
+FCP Euro. Yeah it has manual transmission and its a 320d.
In that case the process will be identical. Crack open the fill plug first, open the drain plug and let the transmission drain, install a new drain plug and then refill the transmission on level ground until a thin stream of fluid is pouring out.
Why should i install a new drain plug?and not replace the same?
Drain plugs are exposed to the elements and can become corroded with age. Also, there is always the potential for the fastener to round off when removing. For the sake of making life easier later on it's worth it to simply replace it along with the fill plug. Also, depending on the transmission the gasket which seals the plug to the transmission is not replaceable. This is the case if you have the 6 speed manual on your 320d.
What about the AWD, or rear differentials?
how many quarts i need? fluid transmission manual bmw 335i 2007
shouldnt you go threw the gears and recheck fluid
Yup.
That's for an auto. This is a manual.
thanks!
Hi I own a Bmw 316i e90 and I never changed the transmission oil, car has 201k do you think that I should leave it or change it thanks
+Mehdi BEN KHALIFA If your BMW is a manual transmission I would recommend doing the service as soon as possible. If it's an automatic transmission it is probably too late to service and I would leave it be.
FCP Euro thanks for your quick response i'll do the service asap.

Why in indonesia always flushing with 12 litres of zf 6. Its expensive. And change the filter and gasket. Every 40.000 thousand km
Hi! This process is the same on a 2011 E91 LCI XDrive with N47 2.0 engine?
Hi TBogdan E, Yes it would be the process.
@@fcpeuro thanks a lot for the reply
what oil did you use for the manual? I have an 07 n51 328xi manual and redline is recommending i use D4 ATF. also how much oil was used?
No reply? I'm in the same boat!
Me too. So much mystery over what to use. I have a Haynes repair manual here on my lap. 2006 thru 2014 3 series. For the S6X-37BZ and S6-53DZ says to use MTF-LT-2 BMW 83220309031 fluid at 1.6 qts. . I also have a 2006 BMW E90 325XI and was wondering if you have any advise for degreasing the engine bay? I have had some oil leaks in the past and now its all fixed. Can I spray both the engine bay from the top and bottom? Also what parts should I cover up? Thank you
+Eric Brodsky I personally do not recommend degreasing and power washing engines for the most part mostly due to the amount of electronics in the engine bay. If you were to do it I recommend covering the alternator, the starter, mass air flow sensor, headlights, etc. I would degrease as close to the bottom as you can and either hand clean or steam clean the rest. Avoid areas where there is the most electronic sensors or harnesses.
Hey guys could someone tell me what oil I need for an E92 320i Msport manual thanks
thank you
You're welcome, Eric.
Is this process the same for E82 2009 BMW 128i 6 speed?
It is probably a similar process, yes.
@@fcpeuro thanks for responding! Also do I have to bleed the system after this ? I ask because reading thru other forums people mention something about bleeding as well, what is the relation between this and brake fluid reservoir?
@@josearroyo4575 You have to bleed your clutch (brake fluid is used for your clutch), you don't need to bleed the transmission fluid.
Is it the same process for an automatic transmission?
whats the recommended interval for changing this fluid?
Around every 50k miles.
How many quarts?
Hello Carlos, it should be a little over 1 1/2 quarts of fluid. You'll need to purchase 2 quarts.
Please how many litres you fill in ?
Fill capacity on most manuals is between 1 and 1.5 liters of fluid.
FCP Euro thanks a lot
1,5 litre when service says Bentley BMW manual.
How many L?
should I use 75w90 or 75w140? oil
+Shabir Ali For this particular transmission you should only be using 75W90.

Hi
My car is at 84k miles and has never had
The transmission oil changed
It is too late to do it
Some say that after a certain amount of miles without changing it
It's better to leave it alone
MrNitrojoqui It's fine to change the transmission oil on a car with that mileage, I wouldn't worry about changing it unless the mileage is much higher.
Thank you very much for the response. Liked the video
Is this the same process for automatic trans too? i have an 07 328xi E90. looking to do the same.
what about filter? no change?
The manual transmission doesn't have a filter
Believe it or not, some BMW's with manual transmissions have an inline filter where an external cooler is used. The E9X M3 with the ZF 6 speed is a good example of this. In this application with the Getrag box it does not apply.
what kind of oil did you guys use?
Me too. So much mystery over what to use. I have a Haynes repair manual here on my lap. 2006 thru 2014 3 series. For the S6X-37BZ and S6-53DZ says to use MTF-LT-2 BMW 83220309031 fluid at 1.6 qts. . did you replace the full plug this time too?
+Infinite Universe Yes, you need to replace both the drain and fill plug as they have an integrated viton seal which cannot be replaced separately.
Does the same steps apply on an automatic transmission with the same year?
Did you use new screws?
Hello, we were able to reuse the same bolts in this video.
thanks
Nice videos. You'd be smart to wear safety glasses - good for you and also example for us DIYers.
From my experience, you must fill with the car running, otherwise you'll be low as I heard a whining noise coming from the transmission the first time I did it. Once I filled it while It was running the whining went away and it shifted smoother.
However I had auto not manual so this might not apply to manual transmissions
From what I"ve heard you should both check and fill the fluid when the engine is running so the torque converter is full, if not when you open the fill plug it will pour out and your fill will not give you the proper measurement.
That is correct. Run through gears with engine running. But do this quickly ... you don't want the trany oil to get too hot otherwise the oil expands and oil level is low when engine cold. I believe the oil temp should not be more than 140F.
Torque Converter on a Manual transmission?
Don't you need to replace the drain plug gasket as well!?!?! I'm guessing you just assumed DIY-ers already knew this!?
For this application it's actually a part of the plug, it's not separated like on an oil pan drain plug. Hope that helps.
FCP Euro thanks. good vid by the way.
hey , what kind of transmission fluid do i need to use for the car?
i also have a bme e90 manual
+Matjusz Popjusz There is likely a label on the transmission specifying what fluid to use. In general, E9X manual transmissions use Pentosin MTF-LT-2 or equivalent.
I also have a E90 and I used Redline at 45K, and now will do same with change at 88k. No problems with the trany for over 40k miles.
what was used to spray and clean off the excess fluid?
+samchoochiu Brake parts cleaner.
+FCP Euro I'm looking to switch from the OEM transmission fluid to redline MTL. Since it's a new fluid entirely, is it necessary to flush the system with an entire bottle of MTL? Or will draining the existing fluid take all of the old fluid out?
+samchoochiu Draining your manual transmission via the drain plug will empty the transmission of all oil with the exception of some oil film inside the casing and on the gear set.
FCP Euro Is the small amount of oil film nothing to worry about?
song name?
bsw35 It's a Gareth Foley original
What tranny fluid did you use
is it the same process for the automatic 06 325i..thank you
+palkelbajo The process of changing transmission fluid on an automatic involves several more steps depending on the service you are looking to do. A drain and fill service similar to what we did on this manual will involve draining the oil pan and refilling with the oil at operating temperature. However, the preferred service involves dropping the oil pan/filter for replacement.
Your transmission is a ZF 6HP19. ZF has some service information pertaining to this transmission on their website as a pdf here:
www.zf.com/na/content/media/united_states/corporate_replacement_parts_1/service_portfolio/passenger_cars/Transmission_Fluid_Level_Procedures.pdf
Additionally, ZF also has a service video for this transmission as well which is very useful:
ua-cam.com/video/ZRrgmfM8VlQ/v-deo.html
Let me know if you have any other questions.
+FCP Euro thank you so much for taking the time and writing this detailed response. your videos and the effort you take to making them is always appreciated.
No problem. Glad that they are of use. Hopefully we'll eventually get to do an automatic transmission service on these newer ZF transmissions soon.
The oil on that manual transmision is dirty, that gearbox in inside is fucked man!!
You're stupid, you shouldn't comment on stuff that you have no clue about.
car has 130k e90 and idk if the car fluid has ever been changed
+VinceAlmen I would recommend changing the oil if it's a manual transmission. If it's an automatic transmission I would be cautious with the service you do. If it's an automatic transmission you will only be able to, and should only do, a drain and fill service.
VinceAlmen
How often should you change the filter?
Lol can they make any more goddam noise while your making a video
They're just hard at work getting all the packages out quickly! We have a dedicated space for videos now that is much quieter!
