    This DIY (Do It Yourself) How-To video shows how to change the fluid in a typical BMW manual transmission. See our other “Under Car Fluid Changes” videos for; front differential, rear differential, automatic transmission, transfer case, MINI trans-axle and standard under-car oil change.
    NOTE:
    We are performing these fluid changes on a vehicle lift. All of these fluid changes cane be done "at home" using a common floor jack and jack stands or even drive-on ramps).
    On a manual transmission case, there are both a fill plug and a drain plug. The fill plug is normally on the passenger side of the transmission case, near the middle of the side of the case. The drain plug is on the bottom of the transmission, typically at the rear or middle of the case.
    Most manual transmissions will need 1.5 to 2 quarts, or liters, for a fluid change. Check the applicable Bentley repair manual for model specific fluid quantities.

    The reason for removing the fill plug first is, if for some reason you couldn't remove the fill plug, then you can stop the process and your oil is still as it was.

    Thanks for a great video! The only difference in my case is that the plugs were 8mm Allen. I have an E46 with 6-speed manual, but the transmission looks more like an E90... Also, I don't have a lift, so I did the following with a 2-ton jack: 1) Lift from right-rear. 2) Fill until it overflows (since the car is leaning forward, this will overfill it) 3) With the plug still out, lower the car level. This will drain a bit more fluid. 4) Raise the car again and put in the fill plug.

      Yes, the washers (when used) should be shown in the online store at www.bavauto.com. If you don't see them, just call our advisors at 800-535-2002. Note that most manual transmissions do not have washers on the plugs as the plugs use a tapered thread ... like e common pipe-thread.

    Hi, good video, thanks.
    Just wondering, would I need a new sealing washer for the drain and fill plugs that came on the car as standard? BMW E87 116i N45 engine. I need to renew the oil soon. I've looked at an exploded diagram of the GS6-17BG/DG gearbox and I can't see a sealing washer fitted but my Haynes manual mentions possibly renewing the sealing washer.

      @WhippperSnaperater 3 роки тому

      Hey friend, I'd recommend you determine the thread of your plug, probably an M24x1.5, and buy a generic crush washer that fits the bolt. As long as the washer is the right size it should seal, no need to pay BMW prices for that.

    Drive-on ramps, or any method that lifts the front end only, will not give an accurate indication that the correct level of fluid has been achieved when using 'overflow' as an indication to stop pumping. Vehicle needs to be as level as possible.

      @@WarningSign1000 the E36 takes 1.1 or 1.2 L depending on model. Also, no one is going to destroy their gearbox. It doesn’t matter how much fluid it takes. You don’t need to know. Simply fill from the fill plug until fluid is dripping out. Once the stream is done, install fill plug.
