That's true. I have bad executive dysfunction and, in my case, sometimes I need to be in the right mental state. Some actions help activating it, and some will deactivate it. But sometimes, it's necessary to decompress after doing things. So, the secret is timing. Get moving when I have dopamine, relax a bit when I'm tired. It's trickier than it seems. And medication + diet + exercise + good sleep + mental tools are absolutely necessary to enable me to get anything done.
I constantly play mental gymnastics to avoid doing things that i actually really want to do. I wish I could convince myself in the way that you're explaining, but it hasn't worked for me.
Girrrl love that I subscribed cause Almost every vid is so relevant! I’m picking up on my progress for 2024 for real I’ve been wanting to tap into creative projects and it’s not just gonna pop into thin air I have to do it/start ! 😅 let’s go!
I used to be a terrible procrastinator. The thing that helped me the most was kinda similar to the pros and cons method - basically I was a master of making convincing excuses to myself and when I learned to call out my own BS I was better able to get moving on things as I could see I didn’t really have good reason to keep avoiding it. Took many years, many strategies and much shame and unpleasantness to get there, but all the pain I caused myself back in the day is extra incentive to not let myself fall into bad habits again. Gotta learn things the hard way sometimes!
I needed this. It's kind of funny because I know this as a fact. I know that this is how I specifically work but it's so much easier for me to just be lazy or do what I want to do instead of what I need to do. Something I always struggle to do is read a book or listen to audiobooks, mainly because I have dyslexia and the thought of reading/focusing on something for too long is daunting. But one time, I read the first chapter of a book after setting a timer on a whim and it was just insane because I wanted to start the book for ages, I knew I would love it, and all but I just couldn't get myself to start. So, this is a great reminder. I will be taking notes, I was literally starting to make my schedule.
I love this. I follow you and Dr. K and you two both put it videos today approaching the same idea from a slightly different direction. Makes it feel much more fulfilling to me. Thank you for your work!
I'm starting to think I should just make a new journal series named, "Lessons with Dr. Ana" where I do the same thing as I always do with your videos: making bullet points and taking notes of the tips you gave out in your videos.
Hi Ana! I think this is the best advice and way to get something done during a depression as well. Small steps take you to get chores done, and you can improve everyday.
Hi Ana, thank you for this video! Thanks to it, I feel more strength to continue with my today's work, even when I often tend to dread my tasks. Your videos are always very authentic, calm and reassuring. Thank you for your sincerity and great energy!
Really needed this video. I only go to the gym once a week simply because its so hard to get out of my head and get out of a state of rest. I have noticed that micro movements snowball quickly into a sense of autopilot and doing the thing you need to do. The hardest step is the first one
My life has always been like i am in a dark room & all the windows & doors are permanently closed but even after knowing my real condition everyone is giving me ineffective instructions & suggestions about how to make life better & around all this i always feel like i am forced to thank everyone who tried to help me in this way. In every psychopathic society some people are making money by solving problems & some people are making money by creating nonsense artificial problems & amidst such tug-of-war i was not given an easy chance to become anything in both the groups & that is why i am still not able to create anything that can represent my successful healthy lifestyle. I feel lucky to be able to complain about anything because every complaint i have ruined some very strong strategies of my enemies & then they have to start fresh against me after my complaint.
Not even thinking about it is so helpful 😂 I always think, the sooner I start, the sooner I finish and that applies for work, my masters and yes, house chores
Very helpful, Dr. Ana, and you described how to develop motivation in the most succinct and clear manner. I've been struggling with motivation lately, and your video came at the perfect time. I have 6 autoimmune diseases and a terminal form of cancer but my (negative) attitude to get moving and do something has been "why bother". I am eager to do something meaningful, train for a new career (at 58), and get back to work as I am remarkably vital, all things considered.
i feel like part of it is also that the consequence of not doing something isn't this visceral pressing thought in my mind unless it's already almost too late. i think people who are more "motivated" are also better able to bring the future consequence into their present mind, and then act on the feeling they get from that. i can be so absorbed into the present moment that the concrete image of tomorrow completely leaves my mind altogether, and i have to really work to get it back again. this means i'm good at what i do once i start doing it usually, but planning out my actions into realistic and pragmatic timeslots is something i don't do intuitively at all. this means that often times i just forget to start something altogether, and i don't even get to build any momentum because the thought of doing something hasn't entered my mind in the first place. i feel sort of silly for having to use reminders for all these little things, but if i don't have an external source telling me that i should do something, there's no guarantee that i will. so i suppose i should look into akiflow :p
if you read a book for numbers, it explains that we experience dread when thinking about it but when we actually do it, we think it's not that bad. it's the start that matters
Hey Dr. Ana, your videos are so insightful that I have been watching more and more over time. I was wondering if you can or will be doing a video on BPD? I know you did one on having a parent with BPD, but another video focusing on an individual with BPD would be awesome. Thanks for all the useful insight you have been sharing with us!
One thing that helps me is to sign up and pay for something, e.g., a class or a lesson or whatever it is, and that puts me in a "no choice" mind set where all the thought is taken out of the decision and I feel much more inclined to do it. One good example is exercise. The temptation is to do it at home for free using youtube or other guides. But I pay for yoga classes, and I never miss a class. If I was doing it at home for free I'd never actually bother. Of course this advice only works if you can afford it but it's worth making a financial sacrifice somewhere else if you can.
When the thought comes "should I do the dishes(anything) you are ready to do it - then do it! Because that thought is taking lots of energy out of you, and the following thoughts, by then you'd finish the dishes...
I created motion, but it became routine and I started slowing down again. I'm becoming a bit tired of what I do. I find myself being tired and silent around people again.
Can you explain how to take rests and breaks? And don't fall into the mental traps of im just being lazy i need to keep going no matter what, you wont improve if you stop, etc. I feel that most of my problems are not knowing how and when to relax and slow down. Like do i legitimately don't want to do this an i need to relax or am i being lazy and procrastinating?
I'd also ask yourself is it your ego in play or is this thing you've imagined is real, like is it that bad to wash your face with a bit cold water and what's so bad about it, your body will adapt, no need to overthink stuff and make it worh that it really is😅 (speaking in general here)
Hi Ana thanks for your videos. As someone who has been in Psychodynamic therapy approaching a year after hitting a crisis point all your videos are very applicable to my life and I'm sure many others. I don't really comment much but I just wanted to let you know that your work here is appreciated. There are not many people who can creates videos which are relevant, time considered and insight driven like yours. Also as a suggestion, I've been exploring Somatic approaches as I've been disconnected and detached to a substantial degree to my bodily sense. I would like to know what your opinion or thoughts are regarding that Somatic approaches?

I have ADHD and PTSD so.. motivation is a big problem for me. I suspect this video will kick me in the nuts but I probably need to hear it.
Lack of dopamine makes it much harder than for people who at least have a certain amount of dopamine to feel satisfied after accomplishing it.
I constantly play mental gymnastics to avoid doing things that i actually really want to do. I wish I could convince myself in the way that you're explaining, but it hasn't worked for me.
100% relate with the mental gymnastics. I think I could be a contender for a medal in an hypothetical mental gymnastics olympic competition XD
@@PedroCarvalho-lb7qx HAHA I would whoop your ass
I'm applying this mindset in my weight loss/exercising journey. Thank you Ana!
I agree. And it’s very frustrating when my autistic inertia impairs my ability to get that first step.
In my experience that initiation step is always the hardest. Thanks for showing this framework Dr. Ana!

True. I do get the logic of this. Stopping, happens with a stopping force. Beautifully put.
