These are 5 effective habits I use every single day to do more in less time, and focus on being productive, instead of busy.

You explained perfectly why I also love public transport. Driving feels like a massive waste of time where you can't do anything else except focus on the driving. Riding a train or a metro is getting into places whilst having a moment to chill, read, organise or even work semi-comfortably. it's also great to reset after a long day, unlike with driving where you may get caught in traffic and then it's just more stress pilled on.
I’m the opposite, driving’s a cherished time where I don’t have to focus on anything but the road. Super protective of my drive time. Hey- some of us like to air guitar a solo in traffic😂
But I’m a terrible passenger, either totally bored or anxious that I should be optimising the journey with something productive!! I think we all have our form of ‘active rest’, it should really be talked about more :)
This is why I feel sooo lucky that we have both options, and can choose how to spend our time in a way that makes us feel our best. It’s the small things that make the most difference 🙌🏼🤍
I suffer immensely in the noisy environment of public transport. This can rob me of all my energy for the rest of the day. To use the advantages of public transport, I would have to have my own, uninterrupted compartment. Which I have been able to find approximately 1 time each 10 years ^^
@@spunk88888totally recommend investing in noise-canceling headphones. Even without any music playing, they neutralize super loud noise and make any environment more comfortable
@@spunk88888 I get that so much, I hate the stress and the polluting from driving, but I hate screaming children and people playing their music out loud :( Have you tried noise cancelling headphones ?

It’s really amazing what you listed Id just add that not all of your free time needs to be productive. In psychology they actually encourage you to use time to just be by yourself and explore your thoughts as they are. It helps with mental stability.
luckily when she talks about the portable to do list, she talks about relaxing or using social media, but using it intentionally at this time instead of for mindless scrolling, and how resting is important :)
you just have to make sure that when you're taking time for yourself, you are doing so conciously, and not because you are wasting time
This is true. However, a lot of people equate being unproductive with "rest" and being productive with "work". So, they end up "resting" with activities which aren't actually restful. I also do this a lot.
For example, mindless scrolling on social media is unproductive. But is it actually restful? I'd argue not. Especially when you're chronically online to the point you're getting involved in online politics and putting yourself in constant anxiety, anger, hatred, etc.
Gaming is also unproductive. But just like mindlessly scrolling, it's often not really restful. If you're into online multiplayer stuff, that's especially draining. If you're an introvert, you're drained by socialising in general. If you're an extrovert, you're drained by the toxicity (extroverts have been shown to take in external environments and internalise them much more than introverts, meaning negative environments affect them more).
On the other hand, there are many productive tasks which are also proper rest.
Playing an instrument, for example, is a good way to have a fun rest if you're just messing about. _Learning_ instruments is more of a typical productive work sort of thing --- but just playing them using the knowledge you already have or experimenting with different things is a form of rest.
Reading is also productive and restful. Again though, it depends on whether you're learning (e.g. studying non-fiction, making flashcards of new words you find) or just reading for fun.
Deliberate breaks such as meditation where you're resting your mind are also productive and restful.
So in short, don't fall into the trap of believing that something is restful just because it's unproductive, and thinking something is work just because it's productive.
I commute to work (2 hours everyday) and I read 50+ books in a single year. I haven't read so many books since I was a child!

I decided to watch this video thinking you’d give generic advice I heard over and over again. But then you mentioned how you used to work out in the mornings and work on your side business after your job, but then feel too burnt out for the side business in the evening. That is exactly what I have been going through. I always go to the gym between 6-7am, start my 1hr morning commute at 7:30am and listen to books/podcasts on the way. Always so energized and get to work with so much to give. But I’m an introvert, too. And it takes so much from me. By the time I’m home, I cook dinner and only want to watch TV or do some mindless scrolling because I’m EMPTY and have no energy for my business. So what I took from this video might just be priceless. It’s something I haven’t thought of before! I am going to try to switch my gym time and my side-business time. Hopefully this will work and help me to become more productive in my personal goals! 😊
I had the same thought a while ago like "why should I sacrifice the best of my life time for my main job!?". So I decided to use the energized mornings for myself and work from 11am to 7pm instead of 7am to 3pm (my job is quite flexible).
Man, that didn't turn out well for me. My job and my mental health absolutely suffered due to all the exhaustion at work in the afternoon/evening. Especially when it's one of these "critical" days at work, which you couldn't estimate beforehand. Just imagine the time you are sitting headlessly and depleted on the couch after work in the evening, but your boss still gives you additional tasks, whereas you just wish to fall asleep in front of the TV🤣
Plus, I'm one of these people who end up in "waiting mode" (i.e. procrastination) when I know that I have to leave soonish anyway. So I often couldn't even use my mornings productively. I guess that would take a lot of discipline or a good morning habit then.
So, this wasn't beneficial for me, but still it could totally work for you. I'd encourage everyone to experiment with different day structures 👍
I eventually got to the point that I work only 3 days a week anymore in my main job and have 4 days left for my side hustles.
Getting entire days off did the trick for me instead of just reducing the daily work hours, since shifting the attention from one task to another takes a tremendous amount of willpower and time for me. So my attitude is to say that work days are screwed anyway, my life begins on thursdays 😁
That was the main takeaway for me as well watching this video. I’m really struggling to find time to work on my side hustle, but think I will try the same approach of swapping the side hustle to the morning and doing my exercise at the end of the day. Thanks so much for sharing the tips.

Me, an American, crying as I hear you describe your public transport and how you can use that time productively. I don't think I'll be able to do that in the States until we get self-driving cars! :)
also American, and in the area I live in, the public transportation is also not super safe regarding theft etc, so I unfortunately can't even get out my laptop on public transport without worrying it might get stolen right off my lap!
I live in a European country with good public transport and this still would not work, because it is often so full, that I am standing up pressed between strangers. I can't read, or do anything productive because I need to try not to fall and the bus/train stops every few minutes so people push and shower to get off or on so any train of thought I had is interrupted anyway.

Everyone is struggling (me included) with not being on the phone, or watching series. These are the main time waisters in our minds. Meeting with friends, reading a book, cooking, working, living all these things are being productive and meeining full. This just makes me realise once again that I have to get rid of these things in my life.

Even though I have been in the self - improvement rabbit hole for over 3 years, nobody talks about the proper active and passive habit stacking. It's incredible how much an obvious combination of mentally challenging tasks and things you can do by muscle memory actually is, yet nobody talks about it. Excellent tip and great video
I walk to the station and go for a walk during my lunch break. That way on my "office days" I'm guaranteed to complete half of my fitness goals for the week. I also have a city errands list ie shops that have a city location that aren't in my neighbourhood that i would have to travel to in the weekend. so l can go also tick a few things off on my weekdays so less to do in the weekend

Fantastic video! Sharing with my daughter at college. One thing I’ve found useful for our home is Any List app. I have a shared grocery list and I immediately add things I need from the store as I run out or notice I’m low - and it’s shared w my husband and daughter. Anyone who is out can ck it and pickup things that are on the list, or add to the list. I never spend separate time making a grocery list. It’s always current, and there is room for notes if I want to be specific about quantity or brand. You can have several different lists with different shares/ or private. Great for a home improvement list. Holiday list. That little bit of time savings and organization has been great - plus we are all in the loop. Can’t wait to see your Notion 101 course! I’ve been lurking in the productivity side of youtube since 2019, so I really mean it when I say that these are some of the *best* tips I have heard in a while.
Will definitely implement the first two habits as soon as possible.
I used public transport when I was a corporate drone. It took 1 hour in the morning and 1.5 hours in the afternoon. That was 2.5 hours of billable time and this was before wireless networks so I had to plan to have billable offline tasks. My boss was always amazed that my documentation was never behind. Then I went off to become a professor and now I commute to work by bike (which has other benefits).
The portable tasks thing is pretty neat - I walk to work in the morning (and usually catch the train home - there are some pretty wicked hills in the mix) which takes just over an hour, and there's a guy I see most days using his walk time to read a print-out of a report or publication of some sort. It seems like he's getting a jump-start on his day at the same time as getting some activity in, which is pretty sweet. Works better in summer than winter, probably :)
You killed it at Tip #1: I take my phone everyone and thank God for Hive's mobile app. I have all my tasks, calendar, and docs in one place. Love this!

Really great advice. I use the ‘Phone’ action context for portable tasks in the same way - it works really well. I also use an Outside context to tag any errands or tasks which require visiting a library, venue, store etc - that’s helped me go on more walks, as I see it as an adventure to go and tick off as many of my Outside tasks as possible, like I’m on a quest in a video game. Lots of other great actionable advice here. Subscribed!

many good points :D a little thing i would like to add, is that passive activities should really require minimal brain power. for example, meal prepping can require much focus if you are just starting to get into it. so you shouldn't listen to a podcast etc. while doing it. ofc, as soon as you did it enough times, that you can do it without thinking about it, you can absolutely take a phone call one the side. i know this is maybe implied, but I used to do this wrong, so I wanted others to not make the same mistake 😅.
also, it can be very grounding to do simple tasks without distractions, so you can really listen to yourself and basically don't practice awareness as an isolated skill, but as a general concept to living. That being said, I know that many people don't chose to be time efficient; they have to bc they r single parents e.g. But even in a time management based thinking you should give your brain quiet time, so it can work on problems on a deeper level. Though we should never forget, that this need to constantly manage our time is not an ideal, but an adaptation to the way our society is constructed.
And ofc its okay, if you don't always keep up and manage your time perfectly

Fact of life is that absolutely every body has good and bad days. The biggest lesson I'm still trying to learn is to not let a bad moment, decision or result turn into a bad hour, day or week.
I try to accept the feeling that whatever just happened was bad and actively move on to a different task. Coming back after some time (an hour, day or even a week later) to work out how I can change so I don't repeat the bad moment, means I have some perspective on the situation and I'm less emotional about what went wrong and the results. For me trying to analyse the mistakes I made straight away just makes me frustrated as.my emotions get in the way. I get the frustration out by doing the mindless tasks like chores. Process the emotions first then analyse and implement change.

Portable tasks sounds like a wonderful thing that I need to start doing. I do habit stacking, because I drive for a living. I'm always listening to self-improvement or business courses when I drive, so that's at least something. But the portable tasks sounds great, because I only drive half of the trip to work. My wife drives the half home

I'm enjoying your ideas and enthusiasm from your success and gaining so much time!I hope you don't mind me clarifying that doing two things at once is a great way to save time and make unexciting chores or activities more enjoyable habit stacking is not the same as doing two things at once. Habit stacking is a technique to help you develop a new habit by pairing it with a well-established habit. It's a way to help you start a new habit rather than a way to save time. Habits are associated or 'stacked' so you can remember to do the new one. It's not a time saver (unless of course you actually can do them at the same time!) x

I ride the bus and use the time to relax or listen to other people's conversations. I live in a small city and I have "bus buddies", people I talk to on the bus.

i love all the tips you gave but for my adhd brain, some of them needs a little bit of adjustment here and there. but overall, such a cool person you are, to manage, to know and to grow about and with yoself.

As I myself am working full-time for several years next to studying (and now starting to do another degree still next to working full-time incl. extra hours on top), I have been struggling with time management a lot too. So, while I reflected about myself watching your video, I found 2 more remarks I want to share:
1. Linked to Habit No. 4 - Your body and mind are connected to each other, which makes it hard to try to look at mental and physical energy levels as not related to one another. More precisely, concerning your example: From my personal point of view, I learned that working out in the evening, will lead me to be up late and not sleep to well because my body is heated up from my movement (I rather want this during my day compared to the night) - plus during the workout, I don't have the energy I would need to have (you have a weight lifter here 😀)
Therefore, I think it might be good to be extra careful about when your energy levels are low, the mental one might impact the physical one and vice versa.
2. Related to your overall tipps to reduce procrastination: I use my hand to actually write down what I need to do on paper. Writing down my tasks increased the probability of me actually doing what I listed down as to-do. After organising my work on digital to-do lists over the last year (not knowing this will have such an impact of me procrastinating), this really helps me a lot now.

i can't use my time on public transport efficiently because i have to change train lines and the trains are so crowded that i don't get a seat and i'm glad if i have space to hold onto something. podcast is the only thing i listen to but i can't really concentrate due to overstimulating environment

I think that time blocking also helps you to plan and stick to it. I tend to waste time watching UA-cam 🤫 and if I think about what I want to get done I'm rather likely to get it over with.

Thanks for sharing! I intuitively do many of these things, but the analysis of my time and energy has been a miss. I’m going to be focusing on 3 to 5. My biggest secret is making time for a good weekly review. The look back and look forward coupled with a little self reflection is magic.

These are great tips! I’ve been doing habit stacking so I exercise more often. Doing squats while I brush my teeth is an example. With this approach, I am more active as I have a pretty sedentary life otherwise (I exercise separately as well 😂).
