The way Riversong was written into the story, precisely this episode is so masterful, that I would it the Literature Nobel Prize to it. But unfortunately not all of Doctor Who is on the same level of mastery, so I can't call a restaurant that has only one good dish a good restaurant. If you know what I mean.
aimeelou Nah, she just knows what he looks like in every regeneration but doesn't know which one he met her on. The very next time The Doctor sees her is after Smith takes over
That was because the doctor couldn't have regenerated into 12th if the timelords hadn't given him more regenerations. So she tought the doctor was still having 11's face
I wondered that, too, then I realized: River doesn't know which doctor will be the last she sees. She knows about different incarnation, and when she sees 10's face, she hopes, that she will still meet him later (earlier from 10's perspective). So she's hoping that 10 has already met her, which would mean, that she'll meet him in her own future (as she moves backwards - mostly - on the Doctor's timeline). Realizing that 10 does not recognize her can only mean that this is the last time she sees the Doctor.
When she was doing diaries she said “very early days” then said “ picnic at Asgard” but before that said “Crash of the Byzantium” which we know is with 11 but that’s still very early in 11s timeline so it makes me think did she have that picnic with 10? (Not the same picnic with 11, Amy and Rory in Nevada)
These performances conveyed the tragedy and drama and beauty of River’s life with the Doctor _perfectly,_ before any of it had been written. Alex Kingston and David Tennant are simply irreplaceable in these two roles. Imagine another Doctor here… you can’t. It’s not the same. This was unique and perfect.
David Tennant... he doesn't exaggerate his movements or facial expressions, but they are so incredibly impactful because they are so incredibly real. He allows the emotion to take him over completely - he's just that good of an actor
She didn't say "Martha"... How would that prove anything to him? She told him her real name, which no one except the Doctor knows, meaning at some point in his future he tells her it, and he'd only ever do that if he trusted her completely.
Truthfully speaking it can be assumed that Peter Capaldi(12th Doc) told River his actual name during those 24 years they spent a night on Darillium since by that point he knew River would use that knowledge on her next adventure with his previous self (10th doc) in the library
I love how she had to specify that she didn't rob his corpse of it, and NEITHER OF THE 2 REALLY REACTED TO THAT. Like the Doctor knows how he'll die, even if he doesn't know when.
Amaranth They first met in the Library then in the season 5 episode Flesh and stone then Later on in the pandorica opens and even more in The Impossible Astronaut then a little bit later on in the Wedding of River Song but they took there story to a whole different level with the husband's of River Song!!!
Can you imagine those "lessons" in flying the TARDIS when Amy and Rory are out and the two are like unsupervised teenagers? "Say my name!" "I don't know it yet!"
I do love how these episodes are basically the precursors to the Moffat era Setting up River’s story so beautifully and giving us a 3 year wait to find out who River is was brilliant
“One day I’m going to be someone that you trust completely, but I can’t wait for you to find that out so I’m going to prove it to you and I’m sorry. I’m really very sorry.” *River whispers “Shaniqua” in the Doctor’s ear*
I love how the first time we meet River Song is technically the last time we met her, her story was well written. And we wouldn't know the importance of her character for another few years.
I've always had a very slight headcanon that the music we here in this scene as River whispers is the Doctor's name. We've never heard Gallifreyan spoken untranslated into English so I love the idea it's musicial and all this beautiful Murray Gold music is almost a Gallifreyan narration to their life
We have to remember that he gave that name up for a reason. Even Susan never used it. So David Tennant is trying act someone who is simultaneously stunned, offended, confused and also probably sad/angry because of what that name is associated with.
In Doctor Who names have power. That’s why all Time Lords hide their true names. River knowing the Doctor’s name reveals just how deeply he grows to trust her. It’s like she’s holding his life, if not his very SOUL, in the palm of her hands. In other episodes you can see the power of a name. In the Titanic episode when the Doctor says his name and Gallifrey’s name the ship sparks.
"I trust this man to the end of the universe. And actually, we've been" Never realised that before but they really did, didn't they ? the second Big Bang and when the got married at the top of the pyramid, when time was disintegrating.
I imagine, the day his "Name" is ever known out loud, will be the franchise finale. Also, LOVE that subtle but breath-takingly eerie short melody, when his name is spoken. Subtle implications there.
Hate how we knee how she was going to die before we reslly knew her still hurts me I was like okay she's dead the frist time I seen her Then I rewatched it and I cried big time
Everyone always asks "who is the doctor" or some variety thereof, now he's asking that of someone else, only for them to turn around and blow everything apart with just a name. Tennants doctor will always be the most emotional and the one you invest in most imo
I started watching doctor who a couple of months before i went back to school 3 years ago. I had heard about river and had wanted to watch fairly quickly so this was within the first 10 or so episodes i had seen. I'm about to graduate and this came up as a recommendation god i missed this show have been pretty neglectful as a busy final year student and hope too see more soon.
My wife looked at me and asked, "What is she saying to him???" ...I was going nuts and was yelling at the tv...SHE"S SAYING HIS NAME!!! And...I was right...a good memory...
I think what I especially love about this scene is that her gambit pays off. In seconds, The Doctor immediately snaps back into "go mode," and starts working on solving the problem with renewed vigor.
this is why I really loved doctor who, they actually set up things that get payed off later in the series, they actually pay attention to detail and consistency and left a great air of mystery for the past fans to wonder about
I like to imagine that the moment the Doctor told River what his name is was the moment he left Durillium. After spending 24 years with River, she says “until next time Doctor” and the Doctor says “Please, call me……….. And then he leaves. And River finally knows. She finally understands. I imagine that whatever the Doctor told her, whatever whisper from another place entered her ears, left her crying for weeks.
My theory is that his real name actually has power. Both his name’s origin, meaning, and physical utterance holds so much significant weight and power… whenever anyone asks him what’s he running from, (IMO and theory crafting) I think he’s running away from what his real name infers. Thus, why he chooses “The Doctor” instead.
I always wondered when the doctor married River why he kept away from her and I know now that he knew that if he did he would have to send to the library and he wouldnt see her again after that
Just head cannoning here but wouldn’t it be funny if his name was the whispering voice in the backing track, and it’s like it a culmination of every time it has and will be said, which as far as we’ve seen is only river, Clara and himself so it makes sense for the voice to sound mostly female
Silence will fall when the question is asked, there was silence in the library when the question was answered

the fact that River is astonished he hasn't met her yet means that at some point prior/later she and 10 had met. :) I'd love to see where that went...
aimeelou Nah, she just knows what he looks like in every regeneration but doesn't know which one he met her on. The very next time The Doctor sees her is after Smith takes over
No, she was standing right next to the 12th Doctor and didn't know who he was.
She said "Martha."
Which is funny both for Doctor Who AND Batman v Superman.
She didn't say "Martha"... How would that prove anything to him?
She told him her real name, which no one except the Doctor knows, meaning at some point in his future he tells her it, and he'd only ever do that if he trusted her completely.
Micky P Holy shit, dude, it's a JOKE.
WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME
Man this episode has aged really fucking well.
It's just that little "Yep." that he gives in response to herr asking if they're okay.... It gets me every time :'(
river: (whispers to the doctor) 'look into my eye'
Truthfully speaking it can be assumed that Peter Capaldi(12th Doc) told River his actual name during those 24 years they spent a night on Darillium since by that point he knew River would use that knowledge on her next adventure with his previous self (10th doc) in the library
I know what she said. she said "Hail Hydra!"
Jason Jayawardena How do you now that?
Surfboarder4 Spoilers
LOL
xD
Or she told him his name
Notice when the guy says old married couple shes holding back tears and he is starting to pick up on it.
Hearing all the things River says about the end of the universe (the big bang) Is like shes actually talking about series 5
I love how she had to specify that she didn't rob his corpse of it, and NEITHER OF THE 2 REALLY REACTED TO THAT. Like the Doctor knows how he'll die, even if he doesn't know when.
She totally whispered his porn name in his ear lol
"K-9 Trenzalore."
Tom Barnes according to Alex at a comic con I went to, every time they did the scene she whispered something really dirty in his ear. I love her.
Amaranth They first met in the Library then in the season 5 episode Flesh and stone then Later on in the pandorica opens and even more in The Impossible Astronaut then a little bit later on in the Wedding of River Song but they took there story to a whole different level with the husband's of River Song!!!
@@aimeelou which comic con was that? X

I genuinely think this is my favourite moment between the doctor and river. My god this scene is just so beautiful and heartbreaking.
Can you imagine those "lessons" in flying the TARDIS when Amy and Rory are out and the two are like unsupervised teenagers? "Say my name!" "I don't know it yet!"
The way the freaking music swells as she says his name, almost as if to hide what she said. A name so powerful a mere mortal couldn't understand.
I do love how these episodes are basically the precursors to the Moffat era
Setting up River’s story so beautifully and giving us a 3 year wait to find out who River is was brilliant
David's facial expression when he hears his name. UMPH! My gosh, the impact was just *crisp chefs kiss*
river please please whisper
look into my eye
i so want to see ten flirting with river
“One day I’m going to be someone that you trust completely, but I can’t wait for you to find that out so I’m going to prove it to you and I’m sorry. I’m really very sorry.”
*River whispers “Shaniqua” in the Doctor’s ear*
I love how the first time we meet River Song is technically the last time we met her, her story was well written. And we wouldn't know the importance of her character for another few years.
Without the music: 9/10; with the music: 100/10
I've always had a very slight headcanon that the music we here in this scene as River whispers is the Doctor's name. We've never heard Gallifreyan spoken untranslated into English so I love the idea it's musicial and all this beautiful Murray Gold music is almost a Gallifreyan narration to their life
I really like that concept, especially if it's Old High Gallifreyan - which we've never heard spoken outloud and can't be translated by the TARDIS.
I didn't realize his true name was "Look into my eye" lol
This is so much sadder in hindsight. He tried to not tell her his name for so long to save her life
We have to remember that he gave that name up for a reason. Even Susan never used it.
So David Tennant is trying act someone who is simultaneously stunned, offended, confused and also probably sad/angry because of what that name is associated with.
Murray Gold’s score is sublime in this moment
Dam David is such a good actor
One of the iconic moments in Who History
In Doctor Who names have power. That’s why all Time Lords hide their true names. River knowing the Doctor’s name reveals just how deeply he grows to trust her. It’s like she’s holding his life, if not his very SOUL, in the palm of her hands.
In other episodes you can see the power of a name. In the Titanic episode when the Doctor says his name and Gallifrey’s name the ship sparks.
She says: "The timeless child, thats you"
[Whispers in his ear]: DOCTOR WHO
"We're all gonna die right here and you're squabbling like an old married couple!"
Well, yes, but actually no.
"I trust this man to the end of the universe. And actually, we've been" Never realised that before but they really did, didn't they ? the second Big Bang and when the got married at the top of the pyramid, when time was disintegrating.
damn the emotion in that moment.. so beautifully performed!
I imagine, the day his "Name" is ever known out loud, will be the franchise finale.
Also, LOVE that subtle but breath-takingly eerie short melody, when his name is spoken. Subtle implications there.
"i trust him at the end of the universe"
this punch line is so good
river and the doctor = relation so so complicated
Did they ever go to the end of the universe?
Albert Nave the Big Bang 2 was the universe dying so yah
@@cassieharper2542 lol nice one
Hate how we knee how she was going to die before we reslly knew her still hurts me
I was like okay she's dead the frist time I seen her
Then I rewatched it and I cried big time
Everyone always asks "who is the doctor" or some variety thereof, now he's asking that of someone else, only for them to turn around and blow everything apart with just a name. Tennants doctor will always be the most emotional and the one you invest in most imo
"The name you choose, it's like a promise."
Me then: Huh this River is a pretty cool one-off character.
0:45 and thus peters red setting was born!
She whispered William Hartnel
this is why I really loved doctor who, they actually set up things that get payed off later in the series, they actually pay attention to detail and consistency and left a great air of mystery for the past fans to wonder about
I hope that you or I greet out significant other with so much love and affection oozing from these words, "hello, sweetie."
Can you upload the scene when she tries to exchange diaries with him and realizes he doesn't know who she is?
Yes please do
i dont have any more hearts to rip out!!!! they are both gone
The writing, the performances, the music, just a stellar scene.
the doctor's face when river says his name, it's like
"what the fuck just happened"
1:25 me after watching the entire series: and another tear goes down
The terror in his eyes when she told him his name😂
I remember from a panel, Alex said that when shooting this scene she whispered “Shaniqua” in his ear 😂
Oh man the cold when she whispered his name
Guy: We're gonna die and you two are squabbling like an old married couple.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
i did not saw the series up until this one, but i feel like she might have said his name to him, like the maximum trust he could ever put on a person
I saw a video saying river saying to 10 “you’re younger, younger than I’ve ever seen you”
Could mean she meets 14
Man, I don't like Moffats time as show runner, but damn if this isn't one of the best episodes/single moment in all of doctor who
1:28 *Doctor:* 😳 ............ OH. 😮
Not to say that a lot of the newer stuff hasn't been good. It has certainly had its moments. But they REALLY don't make them like this anymore.
At 1:53, the Gallifreyan choir, David Tennant's acting...mwah
I always wondered when the doctor married River why he kept away from her and I know now that he knew that if he did he would have to send to the library and he wouldnt see her again after that
Just head cannoning here but wouldn’t it be funny if his name was the whispering voice in the backing track, and it’s like it a culmination of every time it has and will be said, which as far as we’ve seen is only river, Clara and himself so it makes sense for the voice to sound mostly female
isn't it "River Tells the Doctor his secret"?
His secret is his name
She told him his name
His REAL name
which is why the doctor whispers in River's ear in the finale of season 6 and declares that it's his name, but it was actually "look into my eye"
It's technically both.
freshtacos15 I thought she said trenzalore because that is where he is meant to die?
freshtacos15 It's a secret with too pieces!! One it's the doctors name and the other that she's a child of the TARDIS!!!!
I think the doctor went back later to erase his name from rivers mind in the data frame so no-one would hack the computer to find out
