  • I haven't driven my M5 for years, so I got it road-ready and took it for a drive. It still feels nuts today - what the hell was it like in 1986?

I revisit this every now and then. It's bitter sweet for me, the end always gets me. I owned quite a few e28's (when they were peanuts) including a very rare Hartge 3.4, based on the 528i which my mother-in-law scrapped (won't go there). It preceded both the original M535i and M5 and had an LSD. I never owned the M5. Glorious. I'm slightly younger than Chris, but I can still remember how unbelievable the original M5 was. A trailblazer. A whole new sector. A saloon car like this was unheard of, and before the skirts and chins appeared they were the original sleeper. The calculated, sinister hooligan. I can't begin to explain what an impact this four door super taxi made on me. Don't sell it mate, she's a well used beauty. Fantastic.

@@copperwiring7661 Thanks. I have no idea unfortunately. It was a long time ago, but essentially it was on its original rubber and me being an ignorant youth who hadn't owned it long was leaving the motorway, heading into a long sweeping left-hander and it unexpectedly understeered and I grazed the barrier (first time I'd ever experienced understeer in an E28!) Just the offside front wing needed replacing and a wheel repair. I left it outside her house (I had too many old Beemers!) and left it there too long. Apparently it was annoying the neighbour. Wish she'd asked me first. She didn't realise what it was and thought I'd abandoned it. 1 of 16 ever made.

There is a long tradition of writing, sub 15 min youtube vids are piggy backing this content with cinematography. This is great short content but don't confuse that with proper writing, Chris manages to bring quality to the role, but I'm sure he'd prefer a few more words in a written publication with video content to back it up

it's not weird, it means you have good taste! For me, I lost interest in car body shape since the early 90s, and that includes bmw, my favourite era is 1977 -1987. And driving one from that era is such a joy, and it doesn't have to be an M5 to get that feel. Modern models are way faster but they don't put a smile on my face like them old ones. This video says it all really.

I love how subtle these old M-cars looked. Yes they have bigger wheels, bigger exhausts, spoilers etc. yet all very discreet and tastefully done, unlike some of the more modern cars which look positively brash and attention seeking by comparison. These were real Q-cars for people who loved to drive, not posers looking to show off. Their rarity helped keep them desirable too, they didn't fall into the wrong hands like todays models frequently do.

well done chris harris. i admire the guy and his journalism. same age as me, same taste and excitement from 80s supercars in the same way i do. i had the joys of my father being a chauffeur/bodyguard for a millionare in the 80s and 90s, and had the honour of having a lift to school in a M535i, amongst others! similar car, but not quite same 286bhp engine! proper motoring journalist chris! respect

I've been aware of your work in car mags and tv, but what a joy to discover this channel where it's just you, the car, your enthusiasm for motoring, and zero bullshit. Absolutely magnificent. Would love to sit around a table with clever and enthusiastic car people like you, Catchpole, Ross Brawn and just let car talk blossom and flow. I can appreciate climate change and progression is moving into the electric era but I think I'd rather be left behind in the wasteland with a Mad Max V8 Interceptor anyway!!!!

If 286 bhp in a 4-door saloon seemed mad in '86, how did 220bhp in a 4-door saloon in 1959 seem? I'm sure there are other examples but that's what the Mk2 Jag had in the 3.8 straight six.
Not that I'm against BMWs; I own 2, one of which is an E39 M5.

      Lewis72 Let's not forget the 1972 XJ12 with 272bhp and a confirmed 150mph top speed. 3-piston front disk brakes, 1 piston rear disk brakes, excellent suspension, 6500rpm 5.3L V12, a true super 4-door. 0-60 in 7.3s in 1972 was blisteringly quick, and that's what the XJ12 did.

BuXTYP - to be quite specific, the euro-spec M5 had the m88. The North American version got the S38, which was built to replace it anyway. The S38 was originally a 3.5L as used in the E28 as well as the E24 M635 CSi. It was enlarged to 3.6 for the E34, then later to 3.8 as an evolutionary model.

I grew up with not one, but TWO E34 M5's in my subdivision and there were two other Bimmer enthusiasts whom had a garage full. One guy had the whole range, E23, E32, E38, E28 and an E30...another had a minty E34 540i/6 and an E30 325is cabriolet. I idolized the E34 M5 for years and still do, but i had thought for the longest time that it was the original M5....and then I learned about the true original

I too grew up with this era of BMW. I've owned four e28s over the years. From the 518i to the M535i (not to be confused with this ultimate machine). But the what has to be the rarest and most unknown was an e28 Hartge. 1 of 16 ever built. Created before even the 535i existed. Was based on the 528i block but bored out to 3,4 and fitted with an LSD. Was the ultimate sleeper. Sorely missed.
One day I will own an e28 M5.
    Great film.
