    I had a 1982 528e that I purchased for $600 with 68K miles, the car was immaculate. Drove it for 18K miles, Power sunroof, power steering, 4 wheel disc brakes, power windows and sunroof, 5 speed, it had it all and was so happy with it. Then, someone offered me $4000 and I said no, then this same person called me 1 month later and offered me $5500 and asked me to stop driving it. He kept calling me and I finally gave in and ended up selling it for $7800. What a sale for me made so much profit. I used the money as a down payment on a brand new E39 525i with all the bells and whistles in 2002 which I still have and has 175K miles and counting.... Hard to say that it has been as reliable as a Honda or Toyota but I still get excited when I think of my 1982 528e its size and the way it felt driving with the window down and my arm resting on the door out the window felt like I was in total control of the road.

      I have a similar story. I found my e28 (528e) in a yard and bought it for $500.00. What's amazing about that is it had brand new Toyo Spectrums on it and started up and I drove it home. BTW, to this day the a/c is still ice cold. Of course, I replaced the worn out parts which were not a whole lot, just the normal wear and tear.
      It's an '88 with the Super ETA 2.7 and has 260,000 miles on it. It's still the shit after 14 years of ownership.

    I bought a beat down E30 with no prior knowledge of 80's era BMWs and even though it was super rough, I fell in love with it. Even with toasted bushings and blown out shocks it was a blast to drive. The M20 was so smooth and sounded so good even with a rusted out exhaust. Six years later I still have the little money pit lol

    If you think THESE are gone, try looking for a 1977-83 3-series. These older BMWs were selling for a few grand in the late-90s/early 00s and bought up as cheap status symbols by owners who could not afford the pricey upkeep. I used to see many a rusted, beaten up 320/528 in the rough neighborhoods sitting on blocks with popped hoods.

I mean that car companies should make $15k cars where the options are a radio and A/C, but just build them to last forever and make them fun to drive. That can be their appeal, that they are fun to drive and will last forever

      Many buyers on BAT are morons with too much time and money. For some reason they think it's a coup to overpay for shit. I quit perusing the site about 4-5 months ago because it has become ridiculous. Too many idiot comments during the auction too, like people congratulating the buyers for overpaying. "Great buy" they say, after some chump pays $50k for an old 535i. lol
      Too many assholes there, constantly chiming in with useless comments like, "Nice car, GLWS", or "Popcorn time". Absolutely zero to contribute regarding the actual cars, like a past story of ownership or a list of potential issues with a certain model, etc. Don't get me wrong, there are many great, and helpful contributors there, but there are now too many auctions and too many useless noobs in the comment section.

      It doesn't matter what you or I think a car is worth unless you are the buyer or seller. Price discovery and value are determined by willing buyers and sellers. In this case it was $50k Sure, you could blame it on one idiot, but there were other bidders so it wasn't just one. The free market determines value, not opinions made by people who don't participate.

    I've owned BMW's for 20 years and noticed deterioration in driving dynamics and build quality over the years. The old German engineering and older German engineers that made these cars real ultimate driving machines are all but gone. The business model has changed drastically over the years making these cars more complicated with smaller block engines, forgoing smooth inline engines for jacked up turbos. Giving up driving dynamics and joy for comfort and accoutrements. All this compounded with over inflated prices that do not justify the cost of the purchased product or it's value. This is a sad testament to what was one of the finest engineered automobiles in the world. And as you have probably guessed, I have since switched to another brand and have had few if any regrets.

    • @czesaw597
      @czesaw597 4 роки тому +5

      I prefer older models, but I won't agree on the dynamics. It all depends on the model and equipment. And as for the reduction in capacity, it just happens to be BMW. Look at Volvo with their only engines 2.0 R4 and 1.5 R3 - pathetic, or lexus which in the new LS only V6 while BMW putting the V12.

    Excellent review. I used to own one of these E28's back in the day. Not sure if I like those US model bumpers though. Haha. Great car but it rusted so easily because I live in area with a lot of road salt.
    I have a 2012 Mercedes C-class now. Amazing car to drive, the structure is 100% quality.... you know how Mercs are... but guess what it developed a power steering problem. Nothing wrong with the pump, it was the ESP module that had to be replaced.
    You can't change a used part because the VIN is coded into the module. 1400 Euros plus taxes and labour. New cars are SHIT and total rip-offs. I'm going to buy a classic Merc, Jag or BMW next... I've had enough.

    I have a 1972 2002 and a local BMW dealer offered to swap me for a day. I would get to drive a new M, and he would get my little 2002. At the end of the day I could not wait to give back the M, and the dealer had a hard time giving me back my 2002. Although the cars were almost 45 years apart, the old 2002 had something its younger, distant relative did not. Soul. A tangible connection to the outside world and a mechanical connection to what was propelling you down the road. Don't get me wrong, the M was a superhero where my 2002 is Clark Kent. You can't engineer soul into a new car.

It comes with some m5 goodies such as the sport seats, front spoiler, rear spoiler, and bilstein sport springs from the factory. One of the best cars I have ever driven. It's red so everybody is always complimenting me or giving me thumbs up or taking pictures of it. I had some guy stop in the middle of the road when the light was green just to talk to me about the car lol. New BMW's just don't have the same personality or road presence that the old ones do.

I took such good care of this car when I had a child in 88 I put in sheep’s wool cover over the back seats to protect them from the car seats. Painted the black grill and side mirrors white and placed a small wing on the back also with a hidden radar detector. Sold it in 1990 in showroom condition for a 1990 735il Hartge package with 17” low profile tires. Miss them both 😢

      BioHazard Shrimp in my opinion the last 2 cars bmw built that can be called the ultimate driving machine are the E39 and the E46 the E60 is faaaat the e90 is too big for a 3 series and their M brothers are basically an engine and that's it and I don't want to start with the F generation the 1M was a great car but it is NOT a mass production car the M2 might have some of the M3 E46 charm but but still not as good bmw now is the ultimate computerized car sadly but that's what the market is asking for and they have to sell

    • @biohazardshrimp
      @biohazardshrimp 6 років тому +5

      0mer Qasim I agree 100% I do a lot of work for BMW Assembly in North America. You should see their rework building. It’s full of X series that have issues. Bidders on BAT are morons with too much time and money. You can get the occasional deal there, because they auction off too many cars now, instead of it just being an old car blog, but for the most part, people overpay there every single day.
      I've had a couple of these E28s over the years, and they were nice. Easy and fun to drive, smooth, comfortable, classy (in their day), but they were shit winter cars. Useless in the snow. I had a minty '87 back in the mid 90s, Diamond Black Metallic with rich burgundy leather, 5spd., and I sold it for around $11k. No way they are worth $50k now, or probably ever. It's a dated looking sedan for Christ's sake.

    Because of my ex-wifes old job I spent 1998 to 2015 working on and living near American military bases in Europe. So in Germany and Italy all the old (precat) BMWs end up in Soldier's Airman's and Sailors hands because the tax to drive a (precat) car doesn't apply to American servicemen. I owned an 89 325 myself at one point. Infact old BMWs are the most commonly found auto still on a US Base. It is very common to find an old good running 3 or 5 series with cold air induction and pipes .

    About twelve years ago now, my dad had a 1985 528e in silver with a black interior. I don’t remember what drivetrain it had, and I’m pretty sure it was an automatic. It was already a high mileage car, I think it had close to 300k miles on the odometer when the transmission went out. He couldn’t afford to repair it, so he let it go. We all loved that car!
