What I hate about using them is every time I’ve used them (I have 5 different colors) is it’s been a gut hook; very few have I been able to catch and release.
too small of a hook, my man. this guy has a good bait (I use them too) but he seems content catching junior size fish I would never classify as "a catch". You can snag 2lb & larger fish with this bait! hook size is important unless you are angling for "potatoe chips".
I use 6 lb main line put on an 11 gram stealth float or any kind of strike indicator before your leader. for your leader i use about 2 feet of 6lb flouro depending on the depth of the spot youre fishing. then 2 split shots medium sized to keep your float steady in the water and 2 split shots 1 foot above your hook on your leader for a nice float. hope this gave you an idea.
Sorry for the delay, I shot a quick video on how I've been rigging them up ua-cam.com/video/2NiFMsVkfSc/v-deo.html If the fish are too smart for the hook hanging out I'll put a smaller salmon egg hook and sink it into the ball on the end of the micetails. I am using 4lb line.
I will usually jig them while I reel in for the first few reels and then let them sit. The jigging motion seems to get their attention and then they'll usually nibble at the mice tail until I set the hook.
Eagle Claw hooks suck tho... Stick with Gamakatsu. Gamakatsu, Owner and VMC are the only brands of hooks that I trust in terms of hook strength, quality and sharpness.
I had the same problem, so I switched to a size 10 Gamakatsu single egg hook and the mice tails float great. No problem with the trout either: they nearly ran me ragged I was so busy catching one after another!
Been good to see the rig ready rather than just the "parts". Thanks just the same.

Sweet video
The red tails got us 5 today:)
How do you retrieve it, do you reel it in slowly or let it sit like power bait?

What pond in utah did you have a lot of luck on.?
That was the pond at Bartholomew Park in Springville.
I clicked because of mouse tails.
oh yeah bro I caught about 40 trout in 3 hours at the Arkansas River that those f****** trout wreck them things
I tried size 8 hooks but they seem like they don't float

Try using mosquito hooks. They're a lot lighter in weight.
Use a 16 treble hook and jam the head in
I haven't caught shit with them
