Idk what Gavin is talking about but your comment made me realize maybe the show creator was hinting at Ray turning away from his hitman life to a life of discreet vigilantiism and hopefully!- another few seasons
it just does a great job of making you panic throughout the entire scene, making you feel as though ray has been ambushed by his old life or that he's in danger etc. and then in the last few seconds, it reminds the audience "it shouldn't be ray that you're worried about here" and then cuts to credits and that's that. perfect ending.

After a few weeks out of the game, Ray surely missed letting it all out on someone who deserves it. I'd really love to see the moment those two realize that some random taxi driver is not their prey, but instead they're Ray's. And I'd really love to see another season of Mr. Inbetween, but us just yearning for more is another testament to how good this show and its ending is.

Loved this show and absolutely loved the ending. Ray was clearly trying to go straight and live a peaceful life, but these boys went looking for trouble and were unlucky enough to pick the wrong victim. The smile and the little break of the fourth wall tells us those boys are done for. Love it.
This ending is so satisfying haha. Keep coming back to watch it again and again. But also, just a perfect portrayal of a morally ambiguous, sociopathic character. Ray isn't a good guy by any means but he has his code & he sticks to it. I think another comment hit it on the head (or maybe Reddit comment) - but this isn't a dude that looks like he loves driving cabs at the end of the show here. It looks like he's instead been fed up with the criminal life and all that entails, some kind of almost burnout-esque feeling. So he's taken a step back and doing something different for a while. But - you gotta wonder - can someone who can kill people so easily, without remorse and without fear - can they really re-adjust to a regular, civilian life? The show kind of hints at this with Ray's cell mate in early S3 - he tells him to his face (probably the only time in the series) that him killing people is fucked. But we see the consequences that guy faces for not being ruthless and remorseless in an environment that calls for it. And so instead now we have Ray at the end of the series, driving cabs, likely not getting up to much danger. It's probably fucking boring for someone like him. Like Ray Liotta at the end of Goodfellas "I get to live the rest of my life like a schmuck".. But then here come a couple of fuckin douchebag amateurs. That have either been put onto him as a hit, or just picked entirely the wrong mark (my theory is the latter). Either way, Ray realises what's going on - but gives them every opportunity to back out. "I'll drop you here" x3... They don't take the bait. Ok. Now he has to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty again. But he's not even mad - he's smiling. He's loving it. He's relishing the return to form and the opportunity to dish out some poetic justice to a couple of scumbags. That's my interpretation of his smile at the end. An absolutely menacing toothy grin. What a show.
Re> his "code". One thing you never see him do is lay a hand on a woman or a child except when he threatened grandma in the "socks" episode and you know he was so close to losing it altogether. In that episode it was Gary did all the clear headed sleuthing and situation management, and we saw Ray completely running off his rails. In that anger management scene he says "I'm in the wrong group" because he was in the room with men who beat their wives and kids, whereas he only bashed "an asshole". In fact he couldn't even bring himself to abuse the corpse of the girl he was sent to clean because "she's someone's daughter". You knew Rafael's days were numbered when Ray concluded that he topped Zoe. Ray even walks away from Freddie when he knows that Michele is upstairs waiting for him. Ray's code clearly says that he only messes up men who can take care of themselves.
Absolute props to the team for having the patience and poise to leave the one 4th wall break for the very end. That last split second alone gave us a full season worth of context.
The reason why this scene left everything so up in the air, was because this show pulls no punches. The MC isn't bulletproof. In every battle he has been in, things could've gone just as bad for him as the person he was shooting at. You felt either one would've walked away from those fights, and this situation felt just like any of those. GREAT SHOW.
I swear that smile at the end was the scariest I have seen - right up there with Rutger Hauer's in the Hitchhiker and Freddie's .... perfect interpolation of a music score. A very strong ending.
By far the most satisfying ending i have ever seen in any series.. his last face! Finally saw the psychotic side of him at the very end but was beautiful! Goosebumps
When I first watched this I knew what the beat of that song was but I could not for the life of me think of it, and once the “run” hit with Ray’s smile and look towards the camera I gave the show a standing ovation.
@@TXAslingr All of you demanding five more minutes, one more episode, a final final season. You're all actual heroin addicts. Content is content, this was art and iconic. Stop begging for something you don't deserve, and that isn't necessary. Cannot imagine how annoying it is for the team if it's this annoying for me to sit here seeing all of this begging.
In my opinion it's not an underrated show. It's just a show that wasn't seen by the majority of the population because it wasn't advertised a lot and it was on for only 3 seasons but the seasons are super short. If it followed the majority of shows it maybe had a season and a half of episodes. However I thought the series was fantastically done in pretty much every aspect. I just wish he did more episodes but he didn't want to do the character anymore since it's been with him for like 20 years. I'm glad I saw the little movie called the Magician before the show because you can see how much better of an actor he has become. Also what's your opinion on if you think those two nitwits were contracted to take Ray out or if it was just two random killers?
When Ray looks me straight in the eye and the music says "run" I literally want to jump off the couch and flee the scene. It's like he's telling me to get moving because he doesn't want a witness for what he's about to do. I've never been caught so off guard by a fourth wall break, like all of a sudden I'm right there in the car with those two yobs and he's giving me a chance to get away. That eye contact gives me chills every time.
When ray asked the guy in the back seat what he did for a living he said “little of this and little of that” which was the response ray gave the woman he had feelings for on the long ride across the country. Which makes me think maybe he’s a hired gun to kill ray.
If they knew who they were dealing with they wouldn’t have approached this situation so sloppily. They’re not professionals. We’ve seen how professionals approach Ray earlier in the series. They try to catch him unaware. He’s perfectly aware and in control in a situation like this. His smile removes all doubt.
That smile at the end, just before the fade to black and his enthusiastic look just before he says 'run', reminds me of the velocitaptors from 'Jurassic Park' just before they eat.
Watch the Australian movie Animal Kingdom, not to be confused with the American series of the same name. Has a similar feel to this, I’d say Scott pulled some inspiration from it.
What a great series. Very well Made, laughed and cried throughout. This scene my heart was in my mouth thinking ray would be killed of. But that smile…. You just knew he’d be ok. He’s hard as a coffin nail
Perfect ending. You knew these two were going tits up and Ray Shoesmith is still out there driving his taxi forever. I've watched the series 5 times now - Classic.
Ray gave them multiple chances to get out but they kept saying "just a bit further" in to the darkness. He kept sighing knowing full well what was happening. In the end he breaks the 4th wall as a nod to The Magician, because just like him, we know where this is going. Run.

💯. I’d say it’s a masterpiece . Beautiful writing. Beautiful understated acting. Just one of the most impressive pieces of TV I’ve watched. Love the ending. The two jackals have no clue they’ve just walk in to a lions territory. An absolute alpha male lion. One that’s killed and killed and killed. They won’t be going home.
Just finished the series yesterday. Kinda tragic, in so much as Ray was trying to get out and start his life anew. But you can't change what you are, I guess. Great character.
I like the touch of him repeatedly stopping likely because he’s trying to not resort to violence. To them he seems spooked cause of the repeated stops but in reality he’s giving them multiple opportunities to leave lol

The look he gives us just before the screen cuts to black -- we just know those two kids are fucked. :D Such a great show.
Just binged this series and the tension this scene evoked was amazing, but Ray's smile and gaze into the camera at the end - priceless.
GREAT SHOW.
Absolutely right, but we can infer that he doesn’t see a threat there and thus that beautiful smile lol.
I have a feeling they're fucked. I'm halfway through season 3 and Ray has a talent for murder and violence that those two cannot possibly comprehend.
Cut to a slightly bruised and bloodied Ray picking the bodies up later that night after wrapping them in plastic...
@@skylined5534 yep, digging another hole in the desert..
@@Eyeball1975nowhere near the desert, btw.
Such a perfect ending and legitimately gave me goosebumps
Fun Fact: This actually happened to the actor/writer Scott Ryan when he was driving a cab for a living.
No way, is there a link to this? omg
I can’t think of a better end to any series than this, and must be near impossible to actually come up with a worthy final scene. Brilliant
See, now THIS is a perfect way to end an incredible series!
Goosebumps
To me they show in the very last seconds of the show. That we have been watching a psycopaat al along. Amazing ending.
The Shield had the greatest finale ever but this was great.
@@BishopWalters12 i havent seen the shield so i wouldnt know but thanks for the info il have to add that to my list
When I first watched this I knew what the beat of that song was but I could not for the life of me think of it, and once the “run” hit with Ray’s smile and look towards the camera I gave the show a standing ovation.
One of the best endings to a show I’ve seen. Wish the show would have kept going, but a perfect way to end it.
Anyone that thinks ray didnt come out of this situation on top havent watched the show
They could have done 5 more minutes on this episode. Or a post credits scene.
Just finished watching it. I’m saying he did, that final smile is your answer.
@@TXAslingr No, it was perfect.
Such an underrated fantastic series! So good. And well done.
Also what's your opinion on if you think those two nitwits were contracted to take Ray out or if it was just two random killers?
his smile literally says that he actually misses the old times
pretty nice of the young men to pick their graves for Ray
When Ray looks me straight in the eye and the music says "run" I literally want to jump off the couch and flee the scene. It's like he's telling me to get moving because he doesn't want a witness for what he's about to do. I've never been caught so off guard by a fourth wall break, like all of a sudden I'm right there in the car with those two yobs and he's giving me a chance to get away. That eye contact gives me chills every time.
Show is criminally underrated, deserved a lot more recognition
Cant say I've ever liked an Australian movie or series before ,but I love this one.
Not even snowtown or two hands, before well decent Ozzie crime films

Watch the Australian movie Animal Kingdom, not to be confused with the American series of the same name.
Has a similar feel to this, I’d say Scott pulled some inspiration from it.
Jack Irish.
What a great series. Very well
Made, laughed and cried throughout. This scene my heart was in my mouth thinking ray would be killed of. But that smile…. You just knew he’d be ok. He’s hard as a coffin nail
Ray was/is a very strategic thinker. There is no way, that he was not prepared for a situation like this.
That smile literally shows the audience EVERYTHING they need to know.
Best Series. I wish there was a 4th season
That scene when Ray breaks the 4th wall gives a bit of relief and joy after a few episodes of melancholy
Perfect ending.
You knew these two were going tits up and Ray Shoesmith is still out there driving his taxi forever.
I've watched the series 5 times now - Classic.
Ray is just calculating the maximum pain infliction while keeping his cab as clean as possible.
Single greatest 4th wall break of all time.
One of the top 10 shows I’ve ever watched.
Ray's smile is the living equivalent of the Donnie Darko bunny mask. Once you see it you can't unsee it. 😄
Ray is fictional.
Sparkle Motion is FACT
Yes, that's exactly right! The whole time watching I was bothered by "where have I seen this eerie smile before?". And here it clicked.
The smile says it all
Ray gave them multiple chances to get out but they kept saying "just a bit further" in to the darkness. He kept sighing knowing full well what was happening. In the end he breaks the 4th wall as a nod to The Magician, because just like him, we know where this is going. Run.
For people who couldn't understand the dialogue:
1:43 Pretty spooky out here,
hey, Dill?
Yeah, it's dark as.
Someone might die
out here tonight.
2:15 What do you reckon,
Dill?
Yeah. Maybe, eh?
One of the best things in tv ever.
I so love this show, such a shame there isn't more seasons. The ending was perfect. Someone is going to die but it isn't the magician.
I almost cry because of HOW THIS SHOW IS UNDERRATED.
I want to be famous for only one reasone- just to tell people : Guys, pelase watch MR. INBETWEEN
Perfect ending!
Breaking the fourth wall and looking down the barrel of the camera with that look… it’s just the perfect ending
Really good series. Ray was such a good character. Perfect ending.
Ray be like: “oh boy here I go killing again!”
That smile says it all .. brilliant show
They could have easily made another couple of seasons with Ray as a taxi driver...A roaming killer for hire it would have been epic
Probably if they ever bring the series back or do a movie; that would be the premise.
@@eventingirl001 it all started with a movie nearly 20 years ago mate. It's over.
No because this series is also about friendship
@@eventingirl001
You never know!
now you are taking it too far. that would be more hollywood nonsense. this was original stuff and the main man made the choice to pull the plug. basically he quit whilst he was ahead.
just finished this show and its refreshing to see a character that is unlike all these pusssified tragic men in American tv shows who die at the end or lose their edge and gives up. what an epic character, resilient and unyielding, ...eternal warrior.
What an awesome series. Loved it
"reckon somebody might die tonight"
Ray's smile: "Nah. More like 2 might."
This is just one of the best shows ever, what an actor!
Still devastated this show ended. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.
Be happy it had a good ending and didn’t jump the shark.
Just finished the series yesterday. Kinda tragic, in so much as Ray was trying to get out and start his life anew. But you can't change what you are, I guess. Great character.
I like the touch of him repeatedly stopping likely because he’s trying to not resort to violence. To them he seems spooked cause of the repeated stops but in reality he’s giving them multiple opportunities to leave lol
ray had the gun ready as soon as they went off the road
That 4th wall break coupled with the music and Ray smiling is the best ending I've ever seen to a show.
Get goosebumps every time that music kicks in! One of the only endings to a TV show that they got bang on. Brilliant!!
Man i love this show i could eatch clips all day....that smile done before they know whats up
They weren't incorrect though, someone was going to die out there that night... it's just that they got the someone or someones very badly wrong.
