To get better looking and penetrating welds make sure the metal is cleaned up down to bare metal, no rust or anything. For straight cuts on plasma, use something as a straight edge like angle iron or tubing etc. as a guide for the plasma torch.
That thing is a debris finder ! Run it in tall grass and saplings and it will find abandoned motor blocks, irrigation parts......especially good at detecting old fences......priceless..... joe
Being a retired Carpenter and College Instructor , it's apparent that Gage has had some training from some very good instructors . He is able to communicate a demonstrate clearly the cause and effect of proper technique . Good job Gage .
you can get nice extension cords from a welding supply company. you can get them in 25' 50' and 100' lengths. really helpful. I use them all the time in my shop to get the welder anywhere in the building
just a little hint for you laura, when cutting with a plasma cutter clamp a piece of angle iron on to make a nice straight cuts it makes it easer to weld a new plate of steel back in.your doing a great job their young lady.
That round disc under the main deck is called a stump-jumper and is an option. The purpose of it is to help ride the fixed, and spinning, knife bar over a stump or other obstruction. without this option if the knife drive bar hits a stump, the mower would be violently thrown sideways until the stump is cleared. well worth the extra monies. Keep it installed.
Because my support arm bent on my brush mower. I cut the support arms and I drilled holes in them put chain in place of the support I cut out. Works great and I can use my quick hitch now.
On the mower you might try using chain instead of the blades. My dad used to mowed oil field ride aways. The chain would flex if you hit a rock or something hard. It saved from a blade from coming from under the mower. Enjoy your videos and the things you and Grant are doing and learning. Be safe and careful God bless.
Gage continues to impress me; he is a super young man! I’m sitting here on my great big 140 acre hill farm I just inherited from my mother. It’s been in her family since 1845; here about an hour south of St. Louis in the Ozark hills. I spent my career in farm machinery dealerships and retired 2 years ago at 70 from a former Ford New Holland and Kubota dealership. Over the years we sold many rotary cutters of various brands. Be aware that the Rhino SE7 is a fairly light weight cutter, as evidenced by the light weight oval blade carrier or stump jumper, and the gearbox is probably only rated for 60-75 horsepower, by the looks of it. The front seal needs replaced and the slip clutch needs to be disassembled and polished up. It is most likely rusted together. But you got an excellent price on it. I laugh when you all call things “old”, I traded in my personal Bush Hog brand 5 ft cutter several years ago (to our dealership) and it was about 50 years old at that time. I started at the beginning of your videos a month or two ago and have watched them all up to this point and I’ve learned a lot. Thank you so much!
Laura, just seen your teaming with Trailmater. Great guy to team with. Others might have put y’all in but I put in you and Grant so glad your in the games.
Getting inexpensive farm equipment and farming with it is a perfect series. So many people have embarked on the Homesteading path ("for reasons") and this is a perfect educational resource. Keep them all in a play list as you go. ... Start building a chart for acreage vs equipment you are using for this project (and compare with modern). An old dealer/customer Allis Chalmers1950s video had an amazing chart for different operations (like plowing, seeding) with their new line of tractors (WD, WD45, CA, B) could do in an hour/day/fuel. When considering how many planting days there are in the spring (say six weeks with some rain outs), a lot more ground can be covered with old equipment if you stay out in the fields than people realize (or are marketed to, to sell million dollar combines). Not sure of your tillage plans but compare plow/fit to no-till (no-till will need less demanding equipment).
Wow! Paired up with Rory at Matt’s Off Road Recovery Games, the best off road driver/spotter in the vehicle that won 24 Hours THAB. You two make a formidable team. I am looking forward to the games.
Back in the 90's (1990-1997) I worked for an orchardist here in Central Washington and I rebuilt the Brush Hog mower they had. It was much larger than that one, it had 3 sets of blades with 3 gear boxes and 2 bogie wheels on the back. It too had major deck issues which I rebuilt using plates of T1 steel which is specific for high impact areas and I plated over the whole deck with the T1. I also rebuilt all 3 gear boxes with all new bearings, races and seals All in all the mower was virtually like new when I was done with it.
I've watched Rory's channel @trailmater since near the beginning. Been out to Utah seven or eight times now on vacation. I'm from Omaha and have been out in your neck of the woods a bunch while storm chasing over the years. My PFP is a screen cap of the Aurora tornado from June 17, 2009. I watched it clip the Iam's pet food plant (that you see in my pfp) and roll some rail cars a few miles west of Aurora.
Yeah, that bend in the wheel bracket if at the right angle to force the wheel into a trailing position to make it steer correctly. ❤ you guys and your channel. 😁
i like how u listened to young buck teach you to do stuff - i was told by old 80 year old dairy farmer when i was 10 and im 49 now - HE SAID THAT YOU ALWAYS LISTEN TO EVERYONE - NO MATTER WHAT AGE OR SEX OR ANYTHING - CUZ SOMEONE ALWAYS MIGHT KNOW MORE THAN U - HE SAID THE DAY U THINK U KNOW IT ALL IS GONNA BE ALL DOWN HILL - SO ALWAYS LISTEN TO EACHOTHER - IVE NEVER FORGOTTEN HIS ADVICE
Love the restoration of old farm equipment. I believe the service to that welder shown was a typical split-phase multi grounded neutral. It is commonly referred to as 220 volt. It's two 120 volt hot leads center- tapped off the same 240 phase with a neutral.
Good to see you working on projects like that. There is a lot of equipment out there that can be brought back to life with a little work. Try using a straight edge when you are cutting, makes the patching much easier, and mig does not like dirt and debris so a quick pass with the grinder will make your welds better.
Laura and Grant. You kids need to find you an old rogator. Take the tank off and all the components that go with it. Turn it into a flatbed put a boom and winch on it also a big toolbox. That way you can keep all your supplies that you need when you guys go out and fix pivots and you won't struggle so much when you go work on them. When your crops are up pretty tall. Keep up the good work all your kids are doing a wonderful job and God bless you💪🇺🇸👍🤗
Good to see Grant, Gage, and of course Laura!!! Thanks for letting us onto your farm lives!!! Good to see and always something to do, even in the winter. GOD bless your family, farm and future endeavors!!!
Better to change the grease fitting now and tape it for painting than to chew up a new paint job trying to remove a stuck fitting. The problem with not welding all the way around the plates is water will continue to get under them and rot the metal underneath where you can't treat it.
Well I had to go out back and see if my bush hog was still out there.... Looks just like it. Send Gage over to fix mine too!! Love to watch all y'all at work. Howdy from South East Texas!!!
Need an 'Air Scaler' and an "Angle grinder". Heat works good on those stuck grease fittings, can also get a hammer activated grease fitting (ala Grease Buster) to get them loose. While you have it up in the air... might as well clean up and grease the wheels. Check the drive shaft for the fales carefully... sometimes they wear out. Weld some 1/2" short chains on the back side of the deck, keeps it from throwing stuff out the back. Grease it and pressure wash it after using... it will last 50 years.
Laura!!! Before you weld you need to remove any nail polish because it can turn your nails black. You also need to cover your hair because hair is extremely flammable. But good job on the welds. And good job Gage he is a great Teacher. Keep up the good work of making videos!!!
Hi Laura and Grant. One of the top 10 innovation winners for the World Ag Expo 2024 was a center pivot tire called the shark wheel. Most winners were autonomous vehicles. It's called SWIFT irrigation wheel. I Think your dad tried one on one of his pivots.
What ever made the hole in the rear of the slasher probably caused the twist in the spline on the pto. Must have been a big whack so would be a good idea to check the gear box foe damage.
Gage is a very talented young man. Keep doing what you are doing and Laura might give you a raise ( lol ). Those old farm equipment is what I started on when I was a kid. Thank you for bringing back old memories. God bless stay safe and positive
There is something very satisfying and nostalgic about watching you weld….i loved watching my Daddy make and repair things. He could do anything he put his efforts into! 😊❤️
It is so impressive that all of You at Laura Farms are stepping up and getting your hands dirty to carry on one the profession that built this country Especially at your age
So glad to see Grant, Gage, and of course Laura! Thanks for showing us that there is so much more to farming than just planting and harvesting! You guys are amazing in trying new things! GOD bless you in all of you and your families adventures!!! Thanks for giving us a peek into your lives!!!
New to the channel, look forward to seeing you driving the buggy! Rory is an excellent spotter youll be in great hands with him! #teamtrailmater headed to that #1 spot!
What an AWESOME Experience and On-the-Job training Gage is getting and ultimately training you Laura. Nice to see a young person doing so many jobs well!!! Keep up the great work Laura, Grant and Gage!!!!!
Good job … a pro tip … get yourself a piece of bar stock for a cutting guide… use vice or C. Clamp to hold it you can cut perfectly straight lines… that way you get a tight fit … trust me you can fill the gaps with weld but it wastes wire gas and electricity
Favorite thing about this video is Laura's willingness to take instruction from Gage on welding and plasma cutting even though he's still a high school student. I know some people wouldn't do that.
See you are teamed with Rory Irish (Trail Mater) for the off road games. You couldn’t be teamed with anyone better. You listen to Rory and you have the competition in the bag.
Laura, I have a SE7 that is use 2-3 times a year and it is a beast! Very strong and works really well. Mine is a 540 PTO so not super-fast but real durable. Honestly yours is in better shape than mine. Word of advise, I have noticed that the 3-point pins and the bolts tends to come loose so be sure to throw some Loctite and lock washers on it.
Not that it mattered much for this project, but in general when cutting or welding vertically, you start at the bottom and work up, which works with the principal of heat rising. The cuts and welds will actually go faster and you'll get less heat distortion.
You and Grant are such nice people, I'm surprised that you need to hire a friend! LOL Gage seems like a great kid; watching and listening to him through this video, appears that he's a really good teacher.
Just found that I was unsubscribed. Fixed that problem. Your farm hand did a great job solo handling the camera and explaning what he was doing. Have him do more. Love watching the journey.
Good morning Sunshine! It's always nice to have projects to work on in the shop during the winter months. Hi guys great video as always and hopefully Grant gets his wish to get like the 4020 loader like the one that was used to load the box scrapper I think in a couple of videos ago
Smart kid not going under it when he was alone and it wasn't on jack stands! Really thinking about what he's doing...that's priceless.
Can see Gage as the high school shop teacher down the road. He’s so patient and encouraging. Plus he seems to sincerely want you to improve
@Laura_Farms1.. no. I don’t talk to spammers on telegram
That young man (Gage) doing the narration on the first project is a natural.
I enjoy all of the Laura Farms content. Gauge seems to have a natural ability to speak on camera, narrate and teach.
please consider grinding before welding, and a self etching primer. good on welding!!!
To get better looking and penetrating welds make sure the metal is cleaned up down to bare metal, no rust or anything. For straight cuts on plasma, use something as a straight edge like angle iron or tubing etc. as a guide for the plasma torch.
Yeah, I'm no expert welder, but you'd definitely want to grind the rust and paint off and get back to bare metal before welding...
Love seeing today’s youth teaching blue collar skills to adults! I bet Laura never took a welding course in high school or college!! Keep going girl!!
She said it was her first time welding so.
Great to practice cutting with oxyacetylene instead of relying solely on plasma, especially when repairing old farm steel😊
That thing is a debris finder ! Run it in tall grass and saplings and it will find abandoned motor blocks, irrigation parts......especially good at detecting old fences......priceless..... joe
A helpful hint. Clamp a straight edge on instead of free handing. It’ll help a lot.
Being a retired Carpenter and College Instructor , it's apparent that Gage has had some training from some very good instructors . He is able to communicate a demonstrate clearly the cause and effect of proper technique . Good job Gage .

You should make this into a series, because how many cheap thing you are restoring to use at the farm.

I'm a retired pipe welder at Upjohn/Pfizer in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Great job with the wire welder especially for first attempt.
Hey, Laura, glad to see you're gonna be at Matt's Off-Road Recovery Games. That'll be a hoot.

You two have a great shop - very critical to a farming operation
Well I had to go out back and see if my bush hog was still out there.... Looks just like it. Send Gage over to fix mine too!!
Love to watch all y'all at work. Howdy from South East Texas!!!
I TOTALLY ENJOYED WATCHING THE VIDEO LAURA AND GRANT 😊
Laura thanks for the video and the hard work put into them. One side note that is a single phase plug the welder is connect to not 3 phase.
I like the pink welding marker!😇
I am so pleased to see the depth of your knowledge. Love it!

I am impressed Welder Laura.
Love that they show you how to make repairs. On the job training!! Go Laura!!
Yeah that wheel is spinning good
Great video nice work welding there Laura, there is nothing that you can't do
I see you're partnered with Rory for offroad games. There is no-one better and even close to JD green. Have fun!

nice to see a young person doing jobs period
Great to watch your videos again....stay safe and god bless
More restoration work being done. The winter months do give you the opportunity to get jobs done like that.
Love from Mike. ❤
good job on the welding and cutting!
yep its not bent, made that way as it is dragged it provides a more upward and over force as opposed to a plowing straight on force
You are a fast learner and Gage is good teacher.
Brush hogs are great for reducing the spread of weed and sampling control. Great piece of multi use machinery. Man this is a long winter.
Wow! Gage is so incredibly smart and thinks about safety when you guys aren't around. He is a Godsend to you and Grant!!!! Loved this video!!!!
I also sharpen the blades on my cutter with a hand grinder. Consider sharpening versus replacement until blades are worn down.

Wire from an old pivot span makes a real good extension cord for the welder you can roll it up on a garden hose reel when not in use
Warming up out here in Texas - hope it eases up a little in Nebraska!

I am amazed at your shop. It looks like a full on automotive shop. Complete with an auto lift!
You go Laura welding and cutting how awesome is that. Farmer girl can do it ALL
