Thats usual in the small town world. I grew up in a relatively small town and never locked my doors or my vehicles, regularly would feed neighbors animals and bring their mail inside for them. We would let our neighbor use our dump trailer and he let us use his zero turn mower. its basically fur trade but with bigger more expensive furs lol
A vеry amazing video I had a misfortunе, I was diаgnosed with оvarian canссer. I also crеаted a channel аnd am trying to mщve in that direсtion, but so far not very suсcessful((sjs
"we borrowed a neighbors..." is a strong statement when you can use it that often in one video. Thank thy neighbor and return the favor, you have some good neighbors it sounds like. God bless
At least you tried. You had more courage than I did to go back. I got selected by LBJ in 1967 from a 1400 acre Michigan family farm, to go to the Republic of Vietnam, and get blown up. My next door farm neighbor, Alexander Zsigo was killed in Vietnam in 1967, the month I got called. God bless and keep you from the bottom of my heart. It's great to see your work. Great video.

You've got an instinctive ability when it comes to teaching. I'm going to recommend a number of topics for the "Off" season that I think a lot of people could learn from even though you've covered some of them spread out in your other videos. Here are some suggestions: Why plant Oats? Why plant Alfalfa? What crops to rotate and why? How do you know when your field is telling you what to plant? What are some less common field crops being planted in the Midwest? How much tile is too much? How does the government affect your planting choices? How do you choose insecticide and when to apply? What is crop insurance? I'm just recommending these because you're a really good source of information and judging from some of the comments I think there are quite a few of your viewers that would benefit. I'm sure you've got tons of great ideas so ignore me if I'm being a pain in the neck. Thanks for the great videos!
Yup those would be good to make, I haven’t dived too deep into that kind of stuff as I am just learning right now, and don’t have much experience to teach on. I hope to do better with this though, show as I learn is the goal.
You guys have an amazing support system!! Hope you and your family have an amazing Christmas and new years! Don't let Josie get away, not many women now a days will stack bales! I love watching you and Grants videos, as I am a younger farmer/ rancher. I have about 10 acres of hay, some row crops and cattle. Thanks again!!!
Well worth watching this video. I really enjoy the breakdown of the income and expenses. Having Grant and Josie, and your neighbors helping is really cool. Most channels don't show the UA-cam income and crop data, but show the expensive equipment. Good thing you have UA-cam helping out.
Spencer ive been watching ur videos since i was about 12 and you inspire me to go for the farming stuff my family has had their farm for about 11 or 12 years and i want to do whatever i can to keep the farm in the family and up and running the best me and my brother can do
A vеry amazing video I had a misfortunе, I was diаgnosed with оvarian canссer. I also crеаted a channel аnd am trying to mщve in that direсtion, but so far not very suсcessful((kfn
Merry Christmas! I’ve binge watched all of yours and Grant’s content. Love it and keep em coming coming. The technical aspect is amazing, watching you both experiment, document, and improve year upon year.
The ending was incredible Spencer I cried. I knew it was 100k. You deserve every bit of it. Especially for next year lol 😂. That is the reward for balancing your life with yt. ❤. I’m still preaching this to other channels
Awesome video! Love the transparency and the info, I do think its helpful to people looking to try the same thing. Hope you and Grant continue to grow and live your dream. Do what you love and love what you do.
Super glad to see your channel explode! I'm glad you've embraced taking the UA-cam revenue into account! Like I said last time, its a seed you planted and now its really yielding well! You're living out a lot of peoples dreams, and I think its safe to say we are all appreciative that you're willing to take the extra time and effort to give us all a full look on the inside. I hope yall have a great Christmas and a good new year man! Oh and get that knee healed up! Want to see you out there bucking again next year!
Great to see the finance side of farming. Most people don't see the cost of farming. They just see the price at the store. For me this is the first time I've seen UA-cam finances in any video. Do you do any live streaming while working?
I have been working for a farmer since 15 and im 19 now. A week ago he approached me asking if i wanted to farm 150 acres to which I obviously said yes to! I cant wait for Christmas break to be over! 😂
Great channel, love addiction to hard work and your honest and transparent calculation. I wish you a nice christmas and again 7mio views on this video😃
One thing about small square bales is that it's hard to bale the hay to wet. Well that's what I've always noticed. we have a 328 John Deere and it always makes nice bales but it is defiantly does not like if the moisture is to high. Slow and steady is the way to go with them as well. Keep up the good work, every day ya learn something new with farming.
I am 18 now...started cattle farming when I was 8 now I have 10 years experience and well I'm switching to welding and working on semis, trucks and cars. My grandpa passed two years ago and we have been downsizing ever since and this will be the last year of our cattle farm
Let me give you some advice from someone who’s older, if you have to pick one of those pick welding. All of those choices will lead to horrible health in your old age. Cattle farming may save your body the best. Welding would pay the best, but DO NOT become a mechanic. Please don’t waste your life like so many other potential engineers have. You will regret it in the end.
Should have mixed the alfalfa seed with the oats and put 3 lbs of Orchard grass per acre. The number of passes you made over the ground you could have moldboard plowed it and had a really nice seed bed.We here in the northeast don’t like to use them much, but everybody has their old set behind the barn.
Yup for sure made some mistakes. Didn't want to plow it as there is some slope and didn't want it to wash. We got a lot of rain this spring so that was a good call. I put a grass mix on when I came back and interseeded after first cut. For sure could have done it differently. It was a last minute decision and typically those don't work out the best. It would be interesting to try planting oats, harvest in august for grain then come back and no till alfalfa right into that and hope for some rain late fall. Hope is come spring its fully established and ready to go. vs spring seeding I had to wait 2 cuttings to get it fully established.
@ Spring seedlings are the majority but fall seeding usually the end of August early September are done also, don’t have to fight the weather so much and usually the work load isn’t so heavy. As far as plowing, those slopes aren’t steep enough to worry about straight seeding you may get some washing but that’s the point of the oats.
Really fun to see how you are working, we live in the south of Sweden and we have a small farm that not is in use just now but we had hen and chickens before even ducks and geases, my girlfriend was selling eggs for breathing and got a really good income on those breathingeggs like 1,5 dollar/egg when we buy foodeggs for 2 cent/egg in the store. Whe also have a plan to growe potatos which is a very high pricetag on at the store, we have to pay about 2 dollar/Kilogram that only for a year ago cost 1 $/1kilogram. Potatos dont have to be planted in rich soil you can grov potatos in sand. You dont have to spread manure or fattening to get them to grow well. They only dont like much water, they would mold in the soil. Happy christmas and a happy new year!🎉
My mom grew up on a dirt farm in Michigan in the 1930's, and her mom would stand on the trailer and compress the hay (which was just thrown up loose as bailers not really a thing) and sometimes get snakes thrown up on the hay. Since they lived where the most poisonous kind of rattler lived (Mississauga rattler), her mom would yell and Grandpa would stop the horses jump up on the trailer and chop off the snakes head with a hoe. She really hated farming, as she and her sister were the "hired help" from the time they could walk. Keep up the hard work and you'll get the rewards. No farmers no food!
Love the older power shift John Deere's we had 4050 4x4 power shift with the Q cab I think it was 1988 great bit of kit good all-rounder plenty of power but found it could be a bit thirsty at time's

Seems a plenty big disc for open station JD, but small chisel plow. ;) I am loving the disc-o-vator stuff like that. But can’t be too wet. Of course vertical tillage next great $$$ thing. I see similar unit 5:22?

I made a hay hook in junior high (‘85 or ‘86) and it wouldn’t work at all. An old farmer helped me reshape it to match the turns and shape of my grandpa’s hay hook and then it worked perfectly. I use my grandpa’s hook now.
Have you guys looked into cover crops and getting carbon credits from that. I know on our farm we made money doing cover crops. I don’t remember what program we are doing
bro NEVER let anything/one stopping you getting government money! farmers need every bit of help and government is doing its job to help! those who say this is a hand out had NEVER worked a DAY in their life, and I promise you they say it just to F you over. If no body apply the gov will think the funds are unnecessary and reduce it in the future (this is why gov need to spend all budget every year, if you don't spend, there will be budget cut!), you are not only causing yourself harder to survive, but also driving more people away from farming! ALWAYS APPLY the subsidies!!!!! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS! even if you don't get it, you application is part of the data that can be used to ask for more funds!!
Congrats on another productive yr. Just a question for you. How many man hours do you put into this venture. Both in planning and implementation. I am just interested to see if this is a viable future or if small scale farming is going the way of the dodo. Looking forward to 2025 and a new government and wish you every success for it.
Yup Grant sold all his land and exchanged it for ground where my field is now. This is the area he wanted to be farming long term. He started out in 2020 down “south”
As a young person who would love to get into farming, I really appreciate that you include all your finances.
Yes that is the reason why I do it. Glad you appreciate it, thank you!
Maybe broadcast the alfalfa also??
Same here, im looking into doing something similar
The amount of support that you got from your brother/family and your neighbors was outstanding.

You might also mention that farmers support farm families that need help with harvest.
Totally agree. In Chicago no one helps unless its for personal benefit. Nice to see there are still good people out there
Co-operation has always existed among farmers. If it exists in industrial farms is another question. Forget big cities.
