- The 1965 4020 is back! After extensive maintenance and restoration: her first job was completed today. Thank you so much to everyone who commented advice and suggestions for this project. We couldn't have done this without the help of "old guy" Mike!! He's the brains behind this operation. This was so much fun, now on to planting! A sneak peak of what you can expect this spring: we took delivery of a new seed tender to try out! What do you think? Thank you Unverferth, we can't wait to see this thing in action.

Hey! My name is Mike and I'm an old guy too. Also over 59 and still running strong. Kinda. Sorta.
🤣
Cough. Cough, sputter, Y'all a bunch of kids. Shuffle, fall. I'm 73 and still limping right along. Stumble, trip. 🥸
I know the feeling…
59...LOL You're just a kid!
@@Captain-Max Kids.....
You and Grant did a lot of hard work just to restore that old girl. Pepper is so adorable!💖😻
Grant is a NOTORIOUS BATTERY BANDIT…..I think more a PIRATE! You guys are entertaining and educational. Love your content!
That's the model JD that I learned how to drive on in 78. I once fell asleep while planting peanuts on it and woke up in the ditch, it was all good after some minor repairs! Glad to see y'all fixing it up!!!
I am betting people think that is unbelievable, but it can happen. I found myself nodding off while brush hogging.
11:51 🤣🤣 It never gets old!!
🍑Will never
Never
We had three 4020 on our farm when I was growing up. I spent a lot of my teen years plowing and cultivating on a 4020. Great tractor, my brother still has one of them. No Auto steer, no cab, an umbrella if you were lucky! Great memories for me!
How about the fender radio to go with the umbrella?
was the exhaust vertical pipe right in your face irritating, seems like noise and fumes might get the best of all of us on that thing. What was your opinion of the design?
@@dabneyoffermein595 Have you noticed the position of nearly every tractors' exhaust?
Very seldom were you going directly in the wind, and even then the exhaust pressure pushed everything 5-8 feet above your head unless you were putting around a barn lot.
Living on a very large row crop, cattle, hay farm I doubt if I went 30 days a year without sitting on a tractor or powered equipment, don't even remember having fumes in my face.
@@Ray56z AH, ok, thanks , sounds like a non-issue. thanks again so much!!!
hey that's one of the tractors my grandpa had. Some of my best memories growing up in the 70s / 80's were us the "city slickers from California" going back to the midwest every few summers and staying for 3 months on the farm. Can't believe my grandpa let me drive his fairly new tractor with the cab when i was around 10 years old all by myself after only a 2 minute lesson.
Just to add my 2 cents.....the battery should have a hold down clamp becuase a lead acid battery will have are reduced life if allowed to bounce around. Also consider adding a roll-over frame as it seems from the videos at least the tractor has a high center of gravity.
When I lived in Jersey, I used to take a run up to Lancaster County in PA to the tractor pulls. I've seen a few of these up there. My favorite was an old one longer. The rebuild was fantastic. It got me started rebuilding old Ford tractors. The first was a 7N, then did an 801 power Master. The chances of this turning over is very remote on their farm. It has one heck of a tire span
Where's the hill on their place to turn it over on? Fluid tires make it hard to do even if you want with the width. We used them on river bottoms and on the ridge hills off the bottoms.
"should be fine" famous last words.
Awesome job on the 4020. Runs soooo much better. 🙂😊😀
I learnt to plow on one of those - couldn't reach the pedals so had to stand and drive.... Our yard and trailer tractors were a mix of Fergesons and IHs.... Good memories - Thanks Laura....
Love the 4020! It's a classic. I spent countless hours driving one during my teen years back in the 60's. Ours was a diesel. It drove so nice, I loved it. Thanks for bringing back some awesome memories. Glad you found one.😊❤
I've never seen a 4020 Gas tractor. I picked up on it when I saw the spark plugs. I thought they were all diesels. You learn something every day.
xxxxxxx
They were popular too. Mid '60s a lot hadn't switched to diesel equipment, still wanted everything gas.We had a couple gas to go with the several diesel, nearly identical in the work they did, just slightly more maintenance with gas due to plugs, points, less hours for the oil. As a boy then I was one of those that worked everything to it's limit. Something was said to be a 5 bottom, I had a 6-7 on it.
4020 gas is the reason I got an uncle to switch to Deere from Case, he was the odd one out in the family farming business. Always bragging his 930 or 1030 could outdo any Deere below one of the center swivels. Told him to pick a Deere he wanted to put the 930 against. He picked out the 4020 diesel and I told nah, I'd do it with the gas. He backed to his 6 bottom, told him to pull to the 8. It pulled it but it worked harder than it should be. I hooked and down the field I went, a 11 year old full of piss and vinegar just out did my 6'7" 300lb uncle, and he couldn't whup me for it.
I thought they were all diesel ad well noticed when she showed plugs lol
Made a propane version also
One of my best friends in high school used to have a gas. Did custom work to help pay for college
I love it Laura, a big build-up starting the tractor and nothing happens. You could have left that bit out, but no, Laura shows all the ups and downs.
Love to you all from Mike. ❤
Open station tractors were the thing back in the day. I spent many hours on them. They were affordable and we could work on them ourselves. Even though that tractor is 60 yrs old its still going strong. My fav was the 6030.
Great job you two on the 4020 and the driveway. You know Grampa is looking down at the two of you and just smiling because he is so proud you.
The 4020 is a great project for a good tractor for home use. At some point, a fresh paint job will really make it shine.
Back in the 70's I worked for a Kansas wheat farmer during High School. He had a box scraper just like the one you have. I usually don't comment but consider adding some weight to the axel to help it from skipping around.
It's nice to see an old 4020 getting some love. That cat is something else 😅
I drove a 1966 4020 many many hours in my life. I kind of miss those days.
Hello Laura and Grant! Thank you for all your entertaining this old man in CT.
CT here as well. Westport.
CT here as well, Madison. Great restoration Grant & Laura! I am very impressed with all you two have and continue to accomplish!
Laura, you can slide that seat forward. It's easy!
Yes, I remember!
I restored an old snapper riding mower and a real old simplicity garden tractor. Both now look and run like new. I find all kinds of chores to do with both machines that would have used muscle power before. It is really satisfying to bring old equipment back to life and make them part of the family. You did good!!!!!
I like the little slap there. Check it out. 😂
Love Grant. Big ole Happy Dude. I love to see Gage grow as a farmer.
Awesome that you got it all working! Box scraper needs some weight over the blade, maybe some railroad iron painted the same color? And the battery holder needs a proper hold down for the battery. 2 pieces of 1/4" all thread and a 1"x3/4" piece of solid wood could do it....👍👍
I remember when the John Deere 4020 was state of the art. God, I feel old.
I love how excited y'all are to use the old iron. Keep up the great content.
My first big field job, when I was about 11 - 12 years old (in the mid-70s), was to mow one of our 100 acre fields with a JD 4020 and a 5 or 6 foot wide mower. It was a real sense of accomplishment. It seemed like I drove around that field for at least 2-1/2 days before I could see any progress. That was my training tractor, before moving up to the Caterpillar D4 and the Case 2670. I'm 59 now.
Your paddock (field) was as big as our dairy farm ☺
My Brother works for Unverferth Mfg here in Ohio. He's in charge of Continuous Improvement. He's also an industrial welder.
Thanks for inviting me along. It was fun! 🙃
worked on my Uncles farm back in the 70's, drove the heck out of the 4020!
Laura popped back up with those beautiful eyes 😍. What a lucky guy her husband is.
Her husband got her because he owns a farm, plain and simple.
@@nathanmccarthy5532 how ignorant are you? Try watching her videos instead of judging them. You might learn something.
My mother worked for John Deere in the 60's. She was a secretary for one of the bigwigs. Tractors like this is what I remember. I once received a toy tractor for Christmas.
The old girl sounds sweet, tractor doesn't sound too bad either !! Seriously you have all done well bringing these old machines back to life. They deserve to work, not rot away in a corner somewhere. I bet it Grandpa is watching and well proud.
Cheers, Poth
At 626 I might suggest putting in a wood spacer to keep the battery case from rubbing thru on the bolts that protrude and possibly adding a clamp. All aside a great job for a new battery box & step!
my MF35 diesel is 62 and still running strong.
Two improvements I made to my ‘72 4320 were a RAParts Turbo III pre-cleaner and I found a retro kit to rebuild the remotes to Pioneer type hose fittings. All new seals and no more adapters.
I really hope you have it professionally painted, and all new stickers put back on it.
You film all year, so I always think of the first day of planting as being the start of a new season. Really looking forward to it.
I grew up on a farm in western Ky, and remember when the 4020s first came out. They were an affordable 'big tractor' for small farmers. They made a big impact on me as a kid.
16:23 This is Pepper’s 😻way of saying, “Nothing but love ❤️ for you world 🌎!”
So strange to see stuff on your REAL channel instead of all the jerks that STEAL your content! It's refreshing!
Great job on the box scraper Guys...really impressed how well it works..And always fun seeing pepper...You can see she loves the farm life😊
Awesome! Glad y'all got that old 4020 and gave it some TLC. My dad still has the 3020 that my grandad bought back in the day.
Thanks for sharing your new adventures!!!
Congratulations on a fantastic job guys keep the momentum going, sending you all our love.
Thank You So Much For Sharing Laura Much appreciated Loved The Video!!
Keep Smiling On!!
😅👍👊❤️
That job was satisfying for you to do and satisfying for me to watch. I appreciate that Grant and you have a fondness for the older machinery.
Great job guys!
Nice job guys you did a great job restoring everything. 👍👍
Yes Laura , you don’t need all new equipment to farm , 40 year old equipment is what a lot of farmers are still using
Great video it was so rewarding to hear you reflect on your grandpa and what he did and now for you to get to do the same thing. How special a man he must have been.
Awesome job!!! I love seeing old tractors from my youth run again!! Wishing y’all success in the upcoming season!!!
Oh ya! Looking good!! Thanks for taking us around the farm!
Johnny Pops!😊
Love the sound of the ol' 4020 engine, brings back memories of the one on my grandpa's farm that my dad bought when he retired, he and my brother still have it and even had the local high school do restoration on bunch of it as a shop class project!
Thanks to you and Grant once again for sharing a part of your life with America. Love watching and learning with you two!
Awesome video Laura and Grant! I had farmers in my local community who used these tractors. Brings back memories> Have a great week! Coffee Cheers!!
Loved watching you see how surprised you where that you got it to work
Nice to see old machinery coming back into use again...Making a lovely job too...Stay safe and see you on the next one
Thank you, Laura
I grew up cotton farming in the 90s. My favorite tractor -- even with the "newer" tractors we had was the 4020. It's great to see you guys bringing this machine back.
Great job on restoring the box scraper, looks great and works well.
Nice job on getting the 4020 running well and happy.
Pepper is just so happy.
Good morning Laura farms, can be done productively and safely!
another great video good job on the 4020 nice weather hopefully is coming
The 4020 was one of best tractors john deere ever made enjoy her ❤
The wife catches me with tears on my cheeks watching some of your videos. It is because that 4020 really hits me in the feels and she has now figured out why. It just comes up so often in the farm history of the Mid-West. That lame cab was still better than nothing though.
Nice job love to see old Iron running because jumping that starter in case in gear great videos now you need to plow 20acres with that to truly feel the power😊
Good life for your family and the black cat is a real TV star. I hope for good videos and strength for the new farming season and good weather too!
Been working on the farm, came inside for a late lunch; and took a chance to see if you have posted today. Even though I grew up red I am very familiar with, both, gasoline and diesel 4020's. Thanks for starting it up for us. Looking forward to your planting season videos. Lots of corn being put in the ground here in northeast Missouri and western Illinois. Every time you and Grant post a You Tube video, it makes my day better.
Great job Laura and Grant loved it now it is history the yard tractor from the past thank you
That was a awesome video. I use to work on a farm when I was young I drove 2 JD tractors one was the long one with tires in the front close together. Ioved driving them. Thanks for taking me along on your journey. ❤
Awesome job keep up the great work God bless!!
Keep up the great work Laura
Brought the tractor back to life. Cool. Thanks for sharing.
Love all your videos and things that you and Grant get into ❤
Watching you fill it up brought back many memories of filling my pawpaws 4020 up his was diesel, but remember climbing up on the front wheels to fuel up
What a very informative video!! You three amaze me with your ingenuity, stamina, and positive attitude. And that tractor is a gem!
Looking great!
I remember when our neighbor bought a brand new 4020 back in the 60s, we were just wow'ed to see something that powerful and big.
That is a beautiful tractor thanks for sharing, always a pleasure watching. Love all the videos since the beginning.
This is crazy GOOD! Reminds me so much of working on my girlfriends' Dads farm in the 70's. A major good early-teen memory.
Pepper shines in the spot light…such a sweet “performer” ❤
Love the new “old” tractor redo.
It looks great now!
Nice video you guys! 😊
So pleased to see Laura on the 4020 - BUT - I do think this tractor ought to be fitted with some sort of, (What we in England), call an "Anti Roll Bar" at least for Laura's Safety. All tractors can roll or 'Flip over' - quite often without warning and totally unexpectedly. - You touch the edge of a ditch, or a tyre bursts unexpectedly. They soon tip and you end up under the Tractor. They don't cost a fortune, but they will save your life.
I owned small to large backhoes and before I even put the key in the ignition I check that the rops is secure and put on my seatbelt. The saying goes, ,"shit happens when you least expect it!. Only takes a second to be safe.
@@jc-pj3nh I couldn't agree more, and it only takes a second of distraction to be either dead under it or at the least severely wounded beside it. I've even seen it happen once or twice at rallies, where they've been giving 'ploughing' demo's where the small plough has caught a hidden rock or similar - horrible sight all round..
Nice to see the 4020 at work. We have a 56 JD 320 that's been in the family since new. Still works as good as ever.
Thanks Laura.
I'm 64 and remember my grandparents farm the farmer always used the 4020 for everything. Not only him but my uncle as well. Love the sound, would listen to that putt putt noise all day and many nights too.
Good job on the 4020. It looks and sounds great as does the graderbox.
Such a big time of year for you guy's, planing and preparing for planting, long hours in the field, and being at the mercy of the fickle'd Nebraska weather. As you know, it's alway's a stressful endeavor, and the farm lifestyle is never easy, but the rewards can be truly euphoric when it all comes together. Good luck to you both on your 2024 growing season!
I thank you for sharing your life with us. I always wanted to see how a farm work and for me being 70 years young I always been driving down Highway 70 see the dust in the distance and not see what you were doing now I know.
You guys rock very cool old JD! Can't wait for your next project! Love yaz! 😎
Checked out this new piece looks great. Should be a real asset on the farm. Super features all-around. Hope you reap a plentiful harvest.
nice work guy and with Pepper she just wants as much love and pets as you can give her because she loves you guys
I have 2 4020s. A good winter project is the brake valve rebuild. I did both of mine. Lots of dirt gets in there. The boots go bad and all the junk gets in. Its a royal pain. But its worth it.
This bring back good memories for me.. I have the privilege of Driving one of these brand new when I was around 9 years old,
we used to call it the big 40 back them.. :)
Pepper was stalking Laura for some love!
Thanks Laura a great video and thanks to Grant as well.
Ok Laura. Go get a 6-row John Deere model 7000 planter and you and Grant can plant together! Think of how much quicker you'll get done! 😀
Good job guys
One must admire the pluck, stamina, ingenuity, breadth of knowledge, and "get the job done" of family farmers, through cycles of good days and bad. Salute!
Gotta love a John Deere 4020... Did you know that due to the high demand for the tractor, at one point production of the 4020 accounted for 50 per cent of tractor output at John Deere's Waterloo plant in Iowa? It was by far the most popular model of its genre, with over 184,000 being built before production ceased in 1971. Thanks for keeping the legend alive Laura and Grant!!
I made that tractor! Well, a piece of it. I was running a snag grinder at JTWTW in 1965! Yes most of production was 4020, but we also made 3020 and the big 5020. While this was a gas 4020, most were diesel.
So good to see an Golden Oldie appreciated and given some deserved TLC and work !!!
I am restoring a one one owner 1963 massey ferguson 35, 3 cylinder diesel and will be used carefully for grading also ! 😊
