I've never seen a 4020 Gas tractor. I picked up on it when I saw the spark plugs. I thought they were all diesels. You learn something every day. xxxxxxx
They were popular too. Mid '60s a lot hadn't switched to diesel equipment, still wanted everything gas.We had a couple gas to go with the several diesel, nearly identical in the work they did, just slightly more maintenance with gas due to plugs, points, less hours for the oil. As a boy then I was one of those that worked everything to it's limit. Something was said to be a 5 bottom, I had a 6-7 on it. 4020 gas is the reason I got an uncle to switch to Deere from Case, he was the odd one out in the family farming business. Always bragging his 930 or 1030 could outdo any Deere below one of the center swivels. Told him to pick a Deere he wanted to put the 930 against. He picked out the 4020 diesel and I told nah, I'd do it with the gas. He backed to his 6 bottom, told him to pull to the 8. It pulled it but it worked harder than it should be. I hooked and down the field I went, a 11 year old full of piss and vinegar just out did my 6'7" 300lb uncle, and he couldn't whup me for it.
Hola desde México!!! Mi padre compró un 4020 nuevo, aquí en México, en abril de 1968, un estupendo tractor!!! Aún lo conservamos, un tractor construido para durar, mi padre ya falleció.... creó que siempre estimo su JD 4020.
Back in the early 60s, i used to ride on a new 4010 diesel when i was around 9 yrs old, through the yrs i have operated the 4010, the 4020, 4000, and my all time favorite is the 4440, i have 60 acres i own and my two tractors are a 1944 Farmall M, and a 1948 Allis wd, talk about going back in time. i was born in 1954. i love your old tractors and watching you do farm stuff.
We had three 4020 on our farm when I was growing up. I spent a lot of my teen years plowing and cultivating on a 4020. Great tractor, my brother still has one of them. No Auto steer, no cab, an umbrella if you were lucky! Great memories for me!
was the exhaust vertical pipe right in your face irritating, seems like noise and fumes might get the best of all of us on that thing. What was your opinion of the design?
@@dabneyoffermein595 Have you noticed the position of nearly every tractors' exhaust? Very seldom were you going directly in the wind, and even then the exhaust pressure pushed everything 5-8 feet above your head unless you were putting around a barn lot. Living on a very large row crop, cattle, hay farm I doubt if I went 30 days a year without sitting on a tractor or powered equipment, don't even remember having fumes in my face.
Love the 4020! It's a classic. I spent countless hours driving one during my teen years back in the 60's. Ours was a diesel. It drove so nice, I loved it. Thanks for bringing back some awesome memories. Glad you found one.😊❤
I love it Laura, a big build-up starting the tractor and nothing happens. You could have left that bit out, but no, Laura shows all the ups and downs. Love to you all from Mike. ❤
That's the model JD that I learned how to drive on in 78. I once fell asleep while planting peanuts on it and woke up in the ditch, it was all good after some minor repairs! Glad to see y'all fixing it up!!!
My actual name is Bill Baxter (Frontier W.E.B. Singer). I just subscribed to your channel. I can't get over how much you and Farmer Grayce (Another Farm Podcast), look alike.
Recommendation to put weights on the front end and consider adding seat or safety belts and rollover bar per dealer recommendation on the 4020. I envision you'll use it with mower for ditches, and if ever pull anything "stuck" etc. safety is paramount, especially since your experience is with tractors with cabs. Coming from someone who had relative die in farm tractor rollover incident. Looking forward to seeing it painted JD green & yellow. On our family farm growing up we had 4020 that was originally purchased new and did field work, then became the farm "yard" tractor like your usage will be. It was re-built 2 or 3 times! Miss playing on the big green toys!
Open station tractors were the thing back in the day. I spent many hours on them. They were affordable and we could work on them ourselves. Even though that tractor is 60 yrs old its still going strong. My fav was the 6030.
I learnt to plow on one of those - couldn't reach the pedals so had to stand and drive.... Our yard and trailer tractors were a mix of Fergesons and IHs.... Good memories - Thanks Laura....
At 626 I might suggest putting in a wood spacer to keep the battery case from rubbing thru on the bolts that protrude and possibly adding a clamp. All aside a great job for a new battery box & step!
That "new" tractor is going to be a great addition to the farm. It is the perfect size to do those certain jobs that brings the intimacy back to farming that might be missed with the efficiency that is demanded to remain profitable. Besides it's very satisfying to work with the simplicity of these old mechines. This has got me back to getting my old Oliver back in order, God bless you and your family.
Nice job love to see old Iron running because jumping that starter in case in gear great videos now you need to plow 20acres with that to truly feel the power😊
The wife catches me with tears on my cheeks watching some of your videos. It is because that 4020 really hits me in the feels and she has now figured out why. It just comes up so often in the farm history of the Mid-West. That lame cab was still better than nothing though.
The old girl sounds sweet, tractor doesn't sound too bad either !! Seriously you have all done well bringing these old machines back to life. They deserve to work, not rot away in a corner somewhere. I bet it Grandpa is watching and well proud. Cheers, Poth
My first big field job, when I was about 11 - 12 years old (in the mid-70s), was to mow one of our 100 acre fields with a JD 4020 and a 5 or 6 foot wide mower. It was a real sense of accomplishment. It seemed like I drove around that field for at least 2-1/2 days before I could see any progress. That was my training tractor, before moving up to the Caterpillar D4 and the Case 2670. I'm 59 now.
I grew up cotton farming in the 90s. My favorite tractor -- even with the "newer" tractors we had was the 4020. It's great to see you guys bringing this machine back.
Love the sound of the ol' 4020 engine, brings back memories of the one on my grandpa's farm that my dad bought when he retired, he and my brother still have it and even had the local high school do restoration on bunch of it as a shop class project!
Just to add my 2 cents.....the battery should have a hold down clamp becuase a lead acid battery will have are reduced life if allowed to bounce around. Also consider adding a roll-over frame as it seems from the videos at least the tractor has a high center of gravity.
When I lived in Jersey, I used to take a run up to Lancaster County in PA to the tractor pulls. I've seen a few of these up there. My favorite was an old one longer. The rebuild was fantastic. It got me started rebuilding old Ford tractors. The first was a 7N, then did an 801 power Master. The chances of this turning over is very remote on their farm. It has one heck of a tire span
Where's the hill on their place to turn it over on? Fluid tires make it hard to do even if you want with the width. We used them on river bottoms and on the ridge hills off the bottoms.
I thank you for sharing your life with us. I always wanted to see how a farm work and for me being 70 years young I always been driving down Highway 70 see the dust in the distance and not see what you were doing now I know.
I loved the 4020s. They were a great tractor and the first of the “New” John Deere. The whole 1010, 2010, 3010, 4010, and 5010 series were great. Transformed Deere.
Awesome that you got it all working! Box scraper needs some weight over the blade, maybe some railroad iron painted the same color? And the battery holder needs a proper hold down for the battery. 2 pieces of 1/4" all thread and a 1"x3/4" piece of solid wood could do it....👍👍
Hi Laura & Grant. I believe I have told you before that I am 75 and have a JD 3020 that was built the same time as your 4020. Since I only have 20 acres it is my absolute everything tractor from plowing & disking the fields, cutting & raking & running my small square baler to feed the horses. Now the children are grown & gone, but my 25 year old Grandson wants to come in Nov. for a visit & my 3020 like your 4020 needs a lot of attention so that my Grandson won't be disappointed. Thank you for the fix-up video. It will get me going to fix up my 3020.
I'm 64 and remember my grandparents farm the farmer always used the 4020 for everything. Not only him but my uncle as well. Love the sound, would listen to that putt putt noise all day and many nights too.
We had a 4020 absolutely the best tractor we had. We used to pull a Oliver drag type cotton stripper in Central Texas back in the 70s and 80s. We sold it for more than what we bought
The 4020 to me is probably the best all-around tractor ever built by anyone I've got a friend that his father bought a few of them new,and still use them to this day. Just rebuild as necessary and keep on working

Made a propane version also
One of my best friends in high school used to have a gas. Did custom work to help pay for college
