@6:58 you ask how Native American music and Scandinavian music could be linked. It's recently become accepted that the Vikings most-likely had contact and trade with the Americas. There would have been a great deal of artistic trade between them if the paleontology record is correct. We know the Vikings went at least as far as Greenland, and evidence has been found further west in the north-east of the US and Canada region with structures similar to Scandinavian architecture and iron forges (the Native Americans never mastered iron working). Hopi history also talks about "the white haired people of the North," indicating an oral tradition that Nordic people were known as far west as the plains region of the USA. In short, there most-likely is a link between the sounds of Scandinavian and Native American music.
OR… All Europeans had and have their own folk music. All one has to do is research.
Begging you to react to this ua-cam.com/video/bga6N_-Wi-k/v-deo.html pleaseeeee
Everyone who knew Eivør before watching your reaction was like "Wait for it..." :D
That's what i though 😂😂
Can confirm :)
*lol* Same. Her reaction was priceless.
absolutely
Could we maybe try to get an interview with Eivør?! That would be pretty epic
Eivor helped send my father's soul to Valhalla when he passed in 2020. She sang at our request so he could find his way, I'll always be grateful. She is incredible
That's amazing ❤️
your father unfortunately went to hell
amazing.
wow your father got a proper send off
My beautiful friend Lucinda was transported by Eivor, too...we saw her live twice, and she's incredible
“I’ve got chills. What sorcery is this?”
Well, Trøllabundin roughly means spellbound.
Didn't think/translate that before you mentioned it. -_- =P
It's "trollbunden" in Swedish. It could also be translated to enchanted.
I think ONE of °The~Verses ActuaLLy Says something Like· THE *SORCERER HAS PUT A CURSE ON ME" .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! €¥£ ^
And sami of northern scandinavia traditionally had shamans and drums to wander the spirit world. So parts of that you can find in it too....

straight up magic
"Just her voice and a drum right now" and this is precisely when Eivor is at her best.
I hope to see her live once in my life! She’s an amazing artist, full of passion, and so skilled both at singing and playing traditional instruments … just amazing!
Eivor’s voice is haunting. All the Norse mythology lives in her throat ✨
There is truth to this I think...
I love that allegory.... Poetic!
Everyone says that or that she's shamanistic, but the truth is that she draws more from Faroese Christian traditions. Everyone here in the Faroe Islands gets taught about Norse mythology in school of course, but the imagery from it doesn't reach far outside school.
@@Tanerion the tales she sings about are in our culture wish is norse, most people are christian but our culture is still norse like our language is
@@john-hl4hw Depends on the song. I've heard her sing plenty of Christian songs that have nothing to do with Norse culture.
This concert with Eivør was in a place called Stigen in Aurlandsfjorden. I had the pleasure of being present at the concert. On this beautiful Stigen, this concert was a heavenly journey, with Eivør and Vamp.
I can't even imagine how beautiful it would be to be in such a gorgeous place, listening to these angelic sounds.. I get chills thinking about it. ♥️
Jealous now. Would have loved to be there.
Epic
"I've got shivers, and I don't understand why!"
In another clip of this song (there are many on YT), somebody in the comments put it best:
Ever feel homesick for a place you've never been to?
Hiraeth (he-rithe)
(n) Welsh word for homesickness or nostalgia, an earnest longing or desire, or a sense of regret. The feeling of longing for a home that never was. A deep and irrational bond felt with a time, era, place or person.
I feel exactly like this!!!!
its your ancestors trying to break through lol
It’s weird to see this comment because only 2 minutes ago I was still listening to the actual video of her singing this and my thoughts went to “is this what home away from home feels/sounds like?” What a magical feeling.
Yes! It feels primal like the song of distant ancestors.
It's not an applied echo to her voice in production, it's literally natural echoes from the landscape. She's singing very high up on a steep cliff with a huge fjord and mountains all around! It's her voice bouncing on the landscape creating a natural echo.
So i have been a sound engineer for about 10 years and i can tell you now that. That is applied "Echo" its actually Tap delay really so natural echo from the suroundings would not be in perfect time like its heard here and natural echo has a completly different tone to what is being heard here which is much more digital. Tap delay is Tapped in by the sound engineer and matches the songs tempo perfectly like this we hear here. Really easy to over use but this engineer did a very good job at using it only at the right times to emphasize what the artist is doing at the correct time making sure to pull it out at the correct time as well. The other thing that will you can 100% be sure of is that the speakers you see here would not be loud enough cause an echo over that size of landscape enough to be heard over the type of Microphone she is using. That is just 3 Line array tops and looks like 1 Double 18 per side and which looks like a single 15 or speaker for side fill on the stage on your left hand side... That looks like a Sennheiser 965 or 945 or something similar which is what they call a Super cardiod microphone which actually cuts out sound coming from the sides and slightly from the back of the microphone as well to eliminate feedback on stage with monitors. If it was a cardiod it actually cancels all sound from the back of the microphone. So it impossible that the "Echo" is from the landscape but it is a very well exicuted Tap Delay by the engineer
As a fellow faroese I must say that this was a pleasure to watch. She is unique🥳 This recording is from Norway at a farm called Stigen, located by the magnificent Aurlandsfjorden.
she is unique and a treasure.
I don't understand the lyrics sadly but I found it incredibly emotive. Not sure if it was her voice or the melody or both but it was stunning🙏🏻

Eivör is more than a musician. She is some kind of force of nature. It seems like that she can do whatever she wants with her voice.
Definitely one of the greatest female singers in the world.
I recommend just anything you can find of her preforming live. 😊
Can't do anything than agree) I've been hooked since I started listening at her for real a couple of years ago. Just amazing voice and cool songs
❤ 100%
As a Norwegian I love Eivør so much, she's Faroese which is an island between Norway and the British isles. Vikings inhabited the Faroe islands around 1000 years ago, our languages (also that of Iceland) is seperated almost a thousand years but we can still understand many words and phrases from eachother's language!
As a Welshman, I wish we were more in touch with our traditional Welsh/Celtic heritage, the way you guys seem to be.
Instead, everything here has been dominated by England and English culture.
It's an island that cannot be found, except by those who already know where it is.
Awesome. I'm just learning about my heritage and how we migrated over the last 3000yrs. It's a beautiful history. So far traced back to Iceland . So much to learn. Love to learn the language and written . I've learned 3 dialects of Gaelic, ancient Greek, looking to learn other nordic languages modern and ancient.
faroese is almost like a norwegian valley-dialect tho! icelandic to me sounds like old norse with some finnish spice added to make it more unruly.
@@avlinrbdig5715 Reminds me of Elfdahlian
You should react/analyze some kulning (Scandinavian herding call/singing). Jonna Jinton has several nice videos of her doing kulning
This comment deserves far more likes than mine. I love Jonna's kulning. Also, speaking of wizardry, her kulning is literally a "Summon Cattle" spell, and would be perfect for this channel!!! XD
I Norway we also have what we call kveda/kvade/kveding, which I suspect might be related
@@SteinarHusby I do think its called Lokk (Lokke dyra, calling the animals). Kveding can be translated to Poeting (just now invented verb form of Poetry, i guess).
Yeeeees please
Kulning! That's the word I was trying to figure out on a different video I watched when Maria from Heilung was singing in In Maijan!
Eivør - Falling Free! Mindblowing!
(Live at the Old Theater in Torshavn) ua-cam.com/video/KNPIdGBn7M4/v-deo.html
Absolutely!
Exactly!:)
Indeed!
A truly mesmerizing experience!
I love Heilung, Wardruna, etc. but Eivor is in another league with her vocal talent. She and a composer named John Lunn do the music for the show Last Kingdom. It's haunting and beautiful.
Same. Saw Wardruna live. Would love to see Heilung and am DYING to see Eivor. I always get super emotional watching her perform this song, especially when she's alone in the studio. I always want to cry by the end. She sounds what my soul sounds like if only I could let it speak and had a voice.
@@ksy4747 so now Eivør will be touring with Heilung in Europe this autumn ... trying to figure a way to get there for a show in December despite n ot having money or remaining vacation
@@ksy4747 I saw both Eivør and Wardruna live on the same stage, outside by a river, last year, along with Kalandra, who are also amazing. A once-in-a-lifetime event.
@Recent Island I saw Heilung in September in US and holy shiiiiiit. They are the REAL deal. Wardruna can suck it now by compassion 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Still would love to see Eivør. Maybe one day. 🙏
@Mathead omg. Jelllyyy!!! That sounds so amazing 🥰🥰🥰 Heilung should not be allowed to perform indoors lol. Outdoors in a forest or by a body of water is how this music is meant to be experienced.
Saw her live as warm-up for Heilung yesterday. Absolutely amazing.
In Frankfurt? Yes me too, didn't know her before she is awesome
she probably set the bar high for Heilung :)
@@Raevenswood I guess she did, but her performance was basically two people on stage, while Heilung had their entire huge show. Those were two completely different performances, doesn't really make sense to compare them =)
im going to see them on sunday and i cant wait for it
I saw her at their concert in Munich in December and I’ve been obsessed with this song since. I still get goosebumps every time I listen to it 😅
We don't have any throat singing in our culture, but you will notice that people speak a lot while inhaling on a daily basis. It wasn't until I moved abroad that I realized it wasn't a common thing, and almost unique to the Faroe Islands.
Eivør is a national treasure, and it makes me proud and oh so homesick to see her on these kind of reaction videos.
Eivor learned some Inuit throat singing from her friend in Canada actually, first time she did it she did it in a live performance, in her own words.. she doesn't know why she did it, she just felt it was right. That takes some real guts.
I also thought some of the ancient seiðr was said to be uttered in a similar voice
Throat singing was actually commonly used by germanic and celtic tribes until the 8-9th century. Sardinians kept the tradition of throat singing to nowadays so maybe even the Romans did it.
Seriøst? Tað havi eg aldrin lagt merki til, at tað skuldi vera serføroyskt! Eg má heldur hyggja betri eftir, næstu ferð eg tosi við onkran her í DK :D
Faroese and Icelandic share a lot of things and one of the most unique thing is the speaking on the inhaling.
Us Nordics discovered music is magic pretty early on, so spell-singing has legitimately been a Thing over here. 😉
Well, Lúthien managed to sing both Sauron and Morgoth to sleep.
Humans have been doing that since the beginning of time dude.
I see what you did there 😂
if you haven't done "Tokuni" yet by this artist, I hiiiighly recommend! It's the creepiest prettiest most enchanting song!
Fun fact; they incorporated part of this song into the God of War soundtrack and she performed live with the orchestra at the initial teaser reveal!!!
Not just did they incorporate it they actually got her to sing new pieces too. E.g. Memories of Mother
I thought it sounded familiar, that is so awesome!
I got to know her after I saw Last Kingdom: because I loved the opening music and I searched the song and the artist... Unbelievably addictive to me..
NO WAY!!! 😱
Her voice took a fantastic game and took it up to 11.
Wow she actually played in front of the whole population of iceland ! :D
Lol
The population of Iceland is smaller than the attendance at Woodstock (the real one.)
😂😂😂
Ha! Now that must have been a one-of-a-kind show -- even the burglars and thieves attended! Interestingly, this video feels as if an entire village was summoned to attend a performance of personal or community transformation. Very well done!
Lol- That recording was filmed in Norway, and she is from the Faroe Islands (pretty much halfway between Norway and Iceland). The whole population of the Faroe Islands is only 48,000- Iceland is 350,000!
Folk/Pagan music... sounds so amazing because all those singers have one thing in common... their music comes the deepest roots of their culture and ancestral beliefs... they are showing us what we lost in modern times :P... basically they aim to give you shivers all the way down to your soul
Isn't she enchanting? The tones just hit you deeply. I can play this one a million times. She has diverse music.
Please react to "Falling Free" by Eivør. The climax always gets me
Ah yes, great example of her more 'normal' music. The live version from Tórshavn is just magnificent.
Omg, yes! The live version is so utterly amazing! I've never been so excited to put a song on repeat for days on end :D
Oh yeah!
Yes!!! The live version at the Old Theater is an astounding performance.
Yes the live version at torshavn is the one.
Just imagine being out on a fishing boat and hearing that majestic voice through the mountains. X3
You'd think it was a siren😍
She is a siren. Who else could sing in that utterly enchanting way?
"Thor has rising"
But she already did! There is a video here on UA-cam where she sings over the sea and there is people in boats and land listening to her! And also singing Trøllabunding
She is singing next to a fiord, and her voice is echoing and reverberating between the cliffs in front and back of her and off the water of of the fiord.
I get goosebumps on all my body also listening to her. I’ll see her live in October, I’m looking forward to it.
I am so glad you have met the Viking Siren!! As I know you are already aware of, her voice is enchanting in every song she sings!
Seriously to understand the breadth of Eivor one needs to watch “Falling Free” Live from the old theatre on Torshavn - brilliant performance and production. A must see & hear.
Sorry, my english is a disaster . I love your reaction to this special song. I would be very, very happy, if you react to my favorite songs from Eivor: "Falling free" (live at the old theater) and "True Love". I am sure, you love this songs. Both songs are impressive examples for her amazing voice repertoire. I love the nordic femals singers like Aurora and Angelina Jordan, but Eivor is from another world. Best regards from germany 🥰
I know and understand why you would think this is an ancient folk song, but it’s NOT! She wrote this herself, it just feels really ancient That’s how powerful her music is!
You gotta listen to falling free at the old theatre she did , absolutely mind blowing eargasm sound
Keeping with the theme, here's my suggestion for Myrkur - Tor i Helheim. Would love to see the reaction to this one.
I can vouch for some of Myrkur's folkesange songs, Tor i Helheim is good (that opening herding call hooks you like a Hamelin child hearing the pied piper) but after listening (to the album) a few times I really do love Ramund a lot as well. The entire album is great though.
PLEASEEEEEEEE
Or Myrkurs - Ella, but I am biased as I am danish :)
Oh, yess: Myrkur! My personal favourite is "Ulvinde"

The reason I love UA-cam. Back in the 80’s I never had exposure to such beautiful things. The things most of this generation take for granted, well they don’t understand that we had to go to a library to learn about most things, needless to say I didn’t know much. 😂 thank you universe for all this knowledge and exposure.
Eivør - Falling Free (Live at the Old Theater in Torshavn)
I believe the shivers are coming from a kind of ancient call which is in her singing, her voice.
its speaking to our subconciousness, the tribal part of our soul, together with the breathtaking scenery it just pulls you in.
it is a spell, no doubt, and it works and can be understand without knowing the language.
Its the same with Wardruna and Heilung.
Music is emotion, is magic, language without words and if the artist really embrace it, then one can become a sorcerer.
otherwise its just entertainment.
I totally agree
Agreed. Faun does that for me as well.
words are magic, singing is spellweaving.
Wow - You just encapsulated what music is. It has never been characterized better.
When she sings I get the urge to go in the woods to dance in a circle and worship the moon
Way late to the party but you mention extra reverb or resonance, while her voice has a ton of layering, if you listen very carefully, you can actually hear the echos when she hits her more powerful belts. The sound is echoing off the cliffs of the valley they are in. The effect of the natural amphitheater combined with her voice is otherworldly. Fantastic analysis as always.
Note how she starts the song, sounding a bit like she is nervous about being enchantet, and as the song go on, she starts to sing to the sky, with no fear, that she is enchanted. That is how you can understand this song. And she is a fasinating singer, and i love your channel.
The human voice is a precision musical instrument for those with proper training. The Sami Jojlk and Krygistani throat-singing both seem to be part of this performer's repertoire.
Hi Elizabeth, and wow, I am excited for this one. Eivor is one of the vocal angels of the music world. After this one please also look at her song Falling Free, sung live at the Old Theater in Torshavn. That is more of a modern rock ballad but the vocals are absolutely breathtaking.
Seconded! Her singing "Falling Free" is absolutely stunning - one of the best live performances I've seen. Here''s the link: ua-cam.com/video/KNPIdGBn7M4/v-deo.html
Seconding, too ! It's magical. ☺
Officially seconding!

The traditional appeal in the artist's singing is the use of the throat. Throat singing can be found in many cultures and implemented here in a wonderful way.
You need to see Eyvør Falling free live in Thorshavn. Its just magical!
It's the vocal connection to the earth that makes you shiver.
If you want a song in English, try analyzing „Falling Free“ or „True Love“ by her. In Faroese, „Salt“ and „Í Tokuni“ are particularly good.

Aaaarghh this is so good and Elizabeth should totally react to this!

I'm not normally one for reaction videos, but there's something about how you react to music that really makes it worth watching. Like there's genuine joy when you're enjoying things, and you're really open about how you feel about the music and take the time to explain things for people who may not understand how something works the way it does. It's like enjoying the music with a fellow fan in a way, and at the same time learning more about singing. Thank you for taking the time to react to and analyze such an amazing performer as Eivør.♥
I assume the song title would translate to "spellbound", and before the drums came in it certainly felt like a spell being cast.

Falling Free is probably my favorite song of hers. Her live versions of it are mesmerizing. She has a folk-y side (like for the song you reacted to) but she’s also got a modern pop side, which is where Falling Free tends to lean towards. She definitely can belt.

Eivør Pálsdóttir (Eye-vor Pulse-dot-ter) would be the best way of pronouncing in in Faroese which she is as she is from the Faroe Islands, known mononymously as Eivør
Her live performances are crazy, and almost always slightly different, she really has fun with it. One variation of this song, I found on youtube is insane she hits a note so high and she manipulates it so fast it sounds like a violin =D. If you find time, I would love to see your reaction to Falling Free (Live) and True Love (Live Sofar Los Angeles), you can see her do some amazing high notes.

I turned my beautiful Scandinavian jailer on to this in jail on her computer one night and stole her heart. She would play it just loud enough for me to hear it at 2,3,or 4 in the morning and it helped my incredible insecurities of which many were newly formed. Being an old man new to the horror of being only with myself every day for months, isolation, constant observance by cameras, under 24 hour lights on conditions was a mental health beat down like nothing I had ever experienced. I saw the best and worst in people's actions in there, and that was just among the guards. Little good from the prisoners actually was noted by me. To me this particular guard was decent and her loving that song and playing it for me was more important to me than anything else that happened in there. Being able to connect and share with someone, that small act of sharing a song helped me keep my morale from rock bottom. Eivor is a gem of an entertainer

I was pleased to see that many of the points you made were already on my list of amazing features of her voice and this music. Native American influences, beat box, throat singing, yodeling and the power. And the goosebumps I get every time. Yes, it is kind of startling! I recommend listening to her vast repertoire of highly varied pieces. Thanks, kindred spirit person for the great review.
Please do Eivør - Falling Free. You absolutely will not regret it, it's purely magical, constant goosebumps during that song
I have seen many artists doing reactions, some true to the heart, some less, or some directly recognizable as part of money making for the channel. However, seeing how your eyes flickered and your expression became such a unique feature, one could tell, you were enjoying it from the bottom of the heart and have been analyzing the music truly. I like how your professional as well as your heartfelt side are visible in this vid. True to the core.
Eivor is perfect!
You should really try her song "Eivør - Falling Free (Live at the Old Theater in Torshavn)" this will really really blow your mind
This is spooky! After years of listening to this piece by Eivor, I finally remembered to copy the link and came here to ask you to react to it ... and it's the first entry on your channel. Yeap, some wizard is playing with me.
BTW, if no one mentioned, I believe she's singing in her native language - faroese (from the Faroe Islands)
Years ago, this song was also my introduction to Eivor : }
Jesus, she's incredible! Going to see Heilung tonight evening in London and she is support. I am dying to see her now ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Found your channel reacting to another song, and was going to request this react but checked first to see if you already had....... and here i am! Good call and breakdown. Got to your com
mets at 5 mins and knew you were going to freak out when you heard the rest!
I'd echo other comments here and say you should react to "Falling Free" Live at the Old Theater. A lot of reaction videos have done this, but I'd say for good reason. It shows the range and variety of her voice in a more epic, synth/rock setting. It's quite a different arrangement from the album version of the same song.
I can imagine she awoke some ancient spirits around that area, wow such a powerful song.
Eivør - Falling free (live in Torshavn)
Eivør - Salt (Juke Train)
Mari Boine - Maze
Both are absolutely amazing!

the detachment of humanity has to be restored... much love
This tune never fails to give me goosebumps, no matter how many times I listen to it.
Eivør - Falling Free (Live at the Old Theater in Torshavn) ;-)
Simplemente genial. Gracias.
The nordic countries were scarcely populated up until the 19'th century. From late spring to early autumn young girls went to the woods and mountains to shepherd cattle, usually quite far from the farms. They mostly had to fend for themselves and often didn't see another human being for weeks or even months at a time. It was extremely lonely, so they sang these beautiful longing songs or played cows horns or other rudimentary instruments. There were very few people if any, that could hear them sing while herding, so they sang completely without any restrictions, really wearing their hearts on the outside if you will. And they often sang very loudly to hear their own voice echo between the trees and mountains. There were many different styles that differed from place to place. But the common feel you get from all the individually developed styles are, haunting, longing and profoundly beautiful. Like listening to someones bare soul.
