for anyone curious about the song, Beth is correct when she said it was a chant. The song's title "In Maidjan" means "to change deceitfully" or "to corrupt". Which makes sense since the whole album is about a peaceful village being corrupted by having to go to war. In Maidjan uses a proto-germanic language, so a perfect translation into English is a little difficult to find. The best I could find is: *"Come, guest Tyr* *For this invocation* *I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon* *the one of the Sun to aid our army* *Ha Hu Hi He Ho He Hi Ha Hu* *Wealth, Aurochs, Thorn, Divine Breath, Travel,* *Torch,* *Gift, Joy, Hail, Need, Ice, Harvest,* *Tree, Luck, Elk, Sun, Creator, Birch tree* *Horse, Man, Water, Fertility, Day, Home* *Odin, prepare for battle!"*
90% of warfare among the ancients was Psychological. As the Roman general Gaius Suetonius Paulinus: "On the shore stood the opposing army with its densest array of armed warriors. Between the ranks dashed women, attired in black like the Furies with their hair disheveled, waving burning brands. All around them were Druids lifting up their hands to heaven and pouring forth dreadful implications. Our soldiers were so petrified by the unfamiliar sight that as if their limbs were paralyzed, they stood motionless, exposed to wounds." Hence the attire and vocals. Listening to this one and Hamrer Hippyer, I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been to witness if one had never seen such a thing.
Hey man! Sorry for you having ng to wait for this long, but here is the meaning of the core characters in their performances: Maria is playing the embodiment of nature, like the forest, water and the wind The man with the aggressive headwear is the embodiment of conflict/war The man with its bone-like mask, is of course the embodiment of the creatures within the forest The guy with some black facepaint is the representation of the people.
She has an amazing voice, in all honesty she’s what’s kept me interested in this group as a whole. I came for the throat singing, I stayed for the voice of the planet. Because, please correct me if I’m wrong, it doesn’t seem like she’s trying to sing to be ‘pretty’. She sings to make you/us feel. Using ever tool in the vocal arsenal to achieve the purpose the song(?) needs. This group seems to purposely stay away from recognizable modern popular music techniques. Which is smart so it feels truly primeval, but gives this a distinct personality. So often I’m exhausted with modern female singers, “oh I gotta to the power ballad to try and top the charts” or “I gotta do the crazy high note song now”. Just, ugh.

They're trying to reproduce the music from way before the viking age, when Scandinavia had a lot of different shamanistic traditions. There hardly any knowledge of what pre-Germanic music actually sounded like, because when Christianity invaded the Scandinavian countries the missionaries made sure to kill off many of the people who practiced these old religions and rituals, and also since there wasn't any widespread writing culture yet(runes), very few descriptions of the music survived. This band of artists have tried to recreate it from accounts of old Roman and Celtic texts describing the "growling", rhythmic music of the pagans of the north. That long with findings of the actual instruments made of animal bones and inspiration from other, more known, tribal cultures this is what they came up with. Might be accurate, might not be.
I'm not sure you're entirely correct about the missionaries in Scandinavia. In Denmark, for example, the Danish King at around year 1000 (a bit earlier, actually) proclaimed the Danish people to be Christian, as seen on the Jelling Stones. Heilung isn’t even music. It’s an experience. And the changing portion was actually them reciting the Futhark, basically an ancient runic alphabet used to represent symbols. Maria Franz (the female lead) is insanely talented. The men were throat singing. It’s common in Bhuddist monk or Mongolian songs.
There was an explorer from Baghdad that went into Northern Europe to learn about these cultures back during the Viking age. I’m sorry I cannot remember his name. But he described their singing as rough, and beast like. My assumption would be that they would throat sing like this, or perhaps growl a lot like in some metal music.
Yeah, Europeans throat sang as well. Sardinians still do it and they're one of the most ancient genetic lineages of Europe. Tacitus also said the Germanic sounds like dogs while singing.
Necromancer is someone who deals in magic as it pertains to death. Also I think krigsgaldr would be a better song to react to by these guys, they flex more of their vocal abilities
"It's terrifying" Trust me in the past many an Irish lad or lass has heard those sounds and thought exactly that. Only difference is, they had a much shorter time to be afraid.....
So the recitation of the runes in the middle part there is in one breath. That's part of the deal. It's a breathing exercise intended to induce an altered state of consciousness. Having done it. It absolutely works.
I'm probably late, but a necromancer, TRADITIONALLY, would mean someone who divinates through means of the dead (either corpses or spirits). But with the centuries, it turned to mean any type of magic practitioner whose magic deals with death and the dead (that means conjuring ghosts, divination through the dead, reanimation of corpses, etc.). Now that I said it, I continue with the video lol.
@@ThaGreenGoloco your point ? The word used was necromancer = a person who practices necromancy; a wizard or magician Faust a lead singer is a Shaman who practices Shamanism = is a practice that involves a practitioner reaching altered states of consciousness in order to perceive and interact with what they believe to be a spirit world and channel these transcendental energies into this world. 2 different things. Shamanism was a art in Norse / Viking time and era , there is historical facts , and runes that Norse wrote that explains this ... so again .. wtf is your point ? Since everything is made up of energy vibrating at different frequencies and sound, it would make sense to use certain vocalizations to perform ancient rituals and magic.
TheNameless One indeed! Hindu and Buddhist mantras replicate the same principle as throat singing - using vocal chords and sound resonance (internal and external) to heal, connect, and a host of other things. The rich reverence and history for the gift of speech and the power it holds is beautiful to study within their beliefs, myths, and lore. Very primordial in its history and use. Spell work was largely done with music for MANY cultures - all various approaches, but same general conclusion.
@@coatedpolecat Some say words have power. Today, I believe a lot of language has been dulled down a little. Something about the way Heilung sings and performs makes you not only hear the words, but feel them. Some of the ancient languages are very powerful due to some of them having a spiritual connection to them. The Elder Futhak is a prime example as the runes are not just used for language, but for spell casting (rune magic).
celts and proto-germanic culture, yes. the old norse culture is more or less the branch of proto germanic culture that survived the longest, but germanic people, which includes the scandinavians of old all share the same cultural and linguistic basis.
"Necro" - dead Suffix "-mancer" - practitioner of particular type of magical arts Necromancer -- Yes, could be a death wizard. Someone who uses magic to contact, control, resurrect or summon the dead.
In the original Greek, the suffix "-mancy" referred to divination. Thus, a necromancer was one who learned the future by consulting thr dead (ghosts usually). Modern English has lost this distinction. To us "-mancy" just means magic, so "necromancy" is death magic. Normally the animation of corpses. An ancient Greek might call a person who did that a necrourgist.
@@davidlfort thank you! I was hoping someone would point this out, traditionally, in early European lit, necromancer referred to magic in general. Hence why many Arthurian tales use the term even though raising of the dead doesn't happen

for anyone curious about the song, Beth is correct when she said it was a chant. The song's title "In Maidjan" means "to change deceitfully" or "to corrupt". Which makes sense since the whole album is about a peaceful village being corrupted by having to go to war.
In Maidjan uses a proto-germanic language, so a perfect translation into English is a little difficult to find. The best I could find is:
*"Come, guest Tyr*
*For this invocation*
*I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon* *the one of the Sun to aid our army*
*Ha Hu Hi He Ho He Hi Ha Hu*
*Wealth, Aurochs, Thorn, Divine Breath, Travel,* *Torch,*
*Gift, Joy, Hail, Need, Ice, Harvest,*
*Tree, Luck, Elk, Sun, Creator, Birch tree*
*Horse, Man, Water, Fertility, Day, Home*
*Odin, prepare for battle!"*
Those independent words are runes. Example: "Travel" would be the rune "Raido".

Honestly this is what I would expect someone who has the Foundation logo as their profile picture to know
90% of warfare among the ancients was Psychological. As the Roman general Gaius Suetonius Paulinus:
"On the shore stood the opposing army with its densest array of armed warriors.

Sorry for you having ng to wait for this long, but here is the meaning of the core characters in their performances:
Maria is playing the embodiment of nature, like the forest, water and the wind

Both the ancient celts and the Norse have history that point to them throat singing as a way to communicate with nature.
The Elder Futhak is a prime example as the runes are not just used for language, but for spell casting (rune magic).
celts and proto-germanic culture, yes. the old norse culture is more or less the branch of proto germanic culture that survived the longest, but germanic people, which includes the scandinavians of old all share the same cultural and linguistic basis.
ichbinjasokreativ many Indo-European cultures use throat singing too. It’s wonderful.
"Necro" - dead
Suffix "-mancer" - practitioner of particular type of magical arts
Necromancer -- Yes, could be a death wizard.
@@davidlfort I think necrotheurgist is closer...
@@davidlfort thank you! I was hoping someone would point this out, traditionally, in early European lit, necromancer referred to magic in general. Hence why many Arthurian tales use the term even though raising of the dead doesn't happen
not only watch them, go to the concerts and watch them live. incredible
So glad someone got around to Heilung. Just such amazingly different music.
I love your videos, I'm glad your still making them!
The male lead is using a form of throat singing. Period from 1 AD to around 500 AD. Language old proto germanic?? It is written by the Romans of the time their singing reminded them of dogs howling. Go onto their site and you will get a much better description than I can give.
Absolutely love them. I found them following Mongolian throat singing, now I am hooked.
Yeeesss....!! I first heard of this band about a year ago and was so amazed by what I was hearing and seeing that I got hooked lol my friends got sick of it because I couldn't help but share this amazingness with them lol
Is a person that can make those noises with their mouth called a "didgeri-dude"? ;)
Boooooo....
Lmfaatwo
Yep.
Yes, also, boooooooo.
I won’t pretend I wasn’t cackling when I read that. 🤣
Lol, I've earned every boo!
It doesn't matter how many times I listen to anything from Heilung. There is always chills once the music starts. This is music that reaches into you grasps you by your very core.
I absolutely love Heilungs music, its sturs an ancient soul. I can't understand a word but my soul knows exactly whats being said. My heritage is Norwegian and don't speak it but its in the blood
Yass, some great choices! Thank you! If you enjoy this, you'll definitely enjoy Eivor - Trollabundin, angelic voice + throat singing, delicious!

The live mixing for the performance is phenomenal. Discovered this group literally today. Guess I got a lot to jump into. Thanks!
They're doing a show in London Roundhouse on 10 November this year. Probably as good a chance as any to ask them for an interview :)
Wardruna featuring Aurora- Helvegen live is incredible, it would make for a great reaction/analysis video.

7:24 they are chanting the runic alphabet, you are feeling their power ;)
I can't put my finger on way, but I always succumb to tears and something inside me feels torn apart and made new all at once every time the female vocalist chimes in with her ethereal voice! The male vocalists and the instrumentals give me goose flesh on my arms and make me sway along to the music. I don't know why but every damn time it happens and so many emotions go through me. Love this band, I really wish I could see them perform live
Heilung will be playing Sunday 10 November 2019
Roundhouse, London, UK but would suggest getting tickets ordered quickly as they sold out the UK venues last time
It's more like being part of a ceremony than watching a music act. I would love to see them live.
In Maidjan is a War Chant, and the whole LIFA concert is the story of a peaceful people forced into conflict. Kai's throat singing is a perfect counter to Maria's etherial singing, and Christopher perfectly knits both together, making Heilung very much a sum of its parts.
It is not a war chant. It is chanting of the Elder Futhark. The only bit that has anything to with war is the is the beginning. Harigastitiewa. Taken from the carving on the Negai helmet (350BC). It is interpreted as Harigast the priest of Tiewas (aka the God Tyr).
@@odinseye268 Hmm, thought Krigsgaldr was a war chant or something.
@@Necronomous Yes. The translation of Krigsgaldr is Warrior Song, or Story. The commenter here is talking about the song In Maidjan
The story in Krigsgaldr is from the Eggja Stone that recalls a battle.
Ah, yes. In Maidjan not a war chant that I knew.
Also I got some more information about Krigsgaldr, thank you very much for the reply.
Må Oden vara med dig. May Odin be with you.
its 2020, and you are still one of my top 3 internet/celeb crushes!
