I own several classic cars and don't pay any VED tax at all. It makes me even more smug to know that my cars are actually fun to drive.

Well… I have heard thru the trade that even those may well need VED / Road Tax in the next change. I’m all for weekend show Warriors getting away with it but some use it as an excuse to have an old car as a daily driver…that’s where I disagree with the system. “Classic” is a very twisted terminology for some. Been there, done that. Used as a daily driver it should be taxed with the amount of emissions it pollutes… it would make most “Classics” to expensive for most with the top tier of Road Tax due to the pollution they cause. As regards the Fun factor… trust me, you don’t need noise or smell to have it with the torque of most EV’s.

@@KKandEV Whilst I agree that the pollution of the older vehicles is high but that its taking an incredibly narrow view of the issue. There are many learned studies showing that the life cycle pollution of the current EVs is much higher than the equivalent ICE vehicles. Often EVs get scrapped out earlier than would seem necessary simply because their batteries and electronics are too expensive to fix. You also have to consider Geopolitics and social welfare that are involved in their production. its no excuse to say that battery production should be in the country of vehicle manufacture when the raw materials are shipped half way around the World as well as from mining facilities that are basically inhuman.
I have driven (mainly a Tesla) EVs and almost without fail they are far too heavy and ponderous that is not compensated for by some unusable acceleration.
I will be disappointed if the Govt reintroduced VED for classic cars and I can't see them wanting to take the flak for the flip flop policy.

@@clivewilliams3661 there are cherry picked studies that show EVs are worse. Generally funded by oil companies or made up by people with a preconceived hatred of EVs.
Please do your research regarding mining. The only real issue mineral here is cobalt but the vast majority of EVs don't use cobalt in their battery architecture. Couple that with the fact that, of all of the cobalt produced, only about 20% of that is used in EVs. Way more is used in phone and laptop batteries and even more is used in the refining of fossil fuels for non EVs.
A scrapped EV isn't the end. Since there are hundreds of batteries in them, they can be repurposed into battery storage or rebuilt into good batteries once the problem cells are removed. The remaining failed cells can be fully recycled and turned back into functioning cells again.

@@evilutionltd As there is a hatred of EVs there is also an evangelical belief in their existence. I am open to all evidence and certainly don't follow the hype. To establish the life cycle pollution of any product is incredibly time consuming amassing data from numerous sources that has to be analyzed individually in detail but it is the only true way to establish the real cost. I note that there appears to be no evidence whatsoever that I can see that this has been done to vindicate the efficacy of the EV as a savour of the planet, all of the arguments revolve around the emissions from the tailpipe (metaphorical in the case of an EV).
Lithium mining is mostly controlled by the Chinese who produce around 70& of the world's supply and because Lithium is a scarce mineral massive mines are necessary, generating huge quantities of pollutants from the operation and that is before its processed and transported around the world. Lithium, Cobalt, Graphite, Nickel and Magnesium are the main constituents of EV batteries and there has been some bad press generated by Tesla over its use of Cobalt mined in Africa. As it stands, current battery requirements will soon exceed supply.
Li-on batteries degrade in capacity over the number of charge/discharge cycles meaning that any salvaged cells have a very limited future use and certainly not in the quantities produced, to compound matters battery replacement that on current evidence should be expected around 100,000mls is at best a hugely expensive exercise, not only from the unit cost but the necessary vehicle teardown to do it, Tesla being the most notable in this respect, charging well in excess of £10,000 for the privilege and this is the cause of early scrappage. You only have to look at the insurance rates for EVs to realise how dire the industry views the repair of EVs.
Its no coincidence that VAG, the world's biggest producer of cars has stated there is no future in current EVs and Toyota, the second largest car producer is putting all its efforts in other technologies rather than battery EVs

Why should you pay road tax on a EV when it has no emmisions coming out of it?🤔👎😤😖 Well in that case, people who ride push bikes should be paying road tax as well then!👍👏👏

The old idea that it’s purely based on emissions has been partly took away and I partly agree with you. However, ALL VEHICLES wear the roads away, create pot holes and Drivers all want better roads so if the £180-£190 a year makes us all even I’ve no issue. The biggest issue I have is old Smokey Diesels and worn out Petrol cars paying ZERO, £20 or £30 should not happen any longer.

EV's should pay road tax, they use the roads and damage them just the same as ICE cars. £100 - £150 perhaps should be the minimum cost be them EV or low emission.

Wait for part 2 of new VED to be announced after the election. Those £20/£30 road tax will be over £200. Which as you say they should be as can’t have ICE with lower cost than an EV.

in nz you will have to pay $70 per 1000 ks from the 1st of april and you pay in advance, same with diesels as there is no tax on diesel at the pump. big fines if you are caught with no toad user charge mileage left on your windscreen sticker, the only way to avoid it is disconnect your speedo. but they might may it part of your mot/wof to connect to the cars computer to verify mileage

There is no such thing as a “ultra low” Diesel. That idea has been debunked now. They are the worst offenders for exhaust pollution and causing Cancers and overall health issues. You should not be paying ZERO and hopefully in stage 2 of these changes all those cars that were wrongly put in low tax brackets will go thru the roof in cost.
